*What goes on in the mind of a serial killer?
Were they born this way or made so?
Are they capable of change?
What does a criminal profiler do?
Why do people fall in love with criminals?
These are but a few questions we explored in this week’s podcast during this fascinating conversation with Micki Pistorius**, South Africa’s first criminal profiler and the first woman in the profession.
Micki is recognised as one of the world's foremost psychological profilers. Her best selling book Catch me a killer is based on her life and journey as a forensic psychologist. The true crime TV series of the same name was inspired from her autobiographical writing.
I think it’s fair to say that this is one of the most interesting conversations I’ve ever had. I know it may sound like I say the same thing every week, but you won’t want to miss this one.*

Carrying the legacy of a name is often seen as a privilege, but it is in fact, more often than not, a heavy responsibility.
It is no small feat to carry that burden with grace, without false humility and no sense of entitlement.
This is one of the many reasons why I enjoyed my refreshing – and at times, very philosophical - conversation with this week’s guest.
As Nikhil Boolell so eloquently puts it, “I consider myself as dust. I’m nothing, I come from nothing, I will lead my life in the nothingness of the values I hold and I will leave my life as such”.
That said, he is conscious of the valuable role he can play in his life: as a younger member of the Bar, as a caring member of his neighbourhood and as a husband and father.
Join us for this week’s episode as we talk about Nikhil’s childhood influences, why he chose the profession, his thoughts of AI and the law, why he enjoys litigation and more.

What do Indian classical dance, molecular genetics, and neuroscience have in common?
More than you’d think.
A few weeks ago, I had the joy of meeting someone whose inner beauty shone throughout our conversation.
Nirupama Anand 🌀 is not just a dance teacher. Her energy, philosophy, and life story are infused with a contagious joie de vivre that stays with you long after you’ve met her.
Born on a naval ship (yes, really!) and raised in Hong Kong, Nirupama discovered the magic of Bharatanatyam as a young girl. Today, she channels that same magic into Bollyfit and Bollywood-inspired classes that empower and energise women of all ages and backgrounds.
But where do biology and the brain fit into all of this?
You'll have to tune in to this week's episode to find out! (full episode out on Thursday on our usual channels)

“Une roupie pour 10,000, je n’aurais jamais mis mon argent sur Gavin »
Those were the teasing words of a very proud grandfather when his grandson bagged the coveted laureate scholarship in February 1980.
A “late bloomer”, as he candidly describes himself, the bright teenager went on to read law at Oxford University before embarking on a formidable 40-year career at the Mauritian bar, earning the well-deserved Senior Counsel title in 2010.
Gavin Glover SC decided to take on the challenge of becoming Attorney General of the Republic of Mauritius in November 2024. He appreciates the enormity of the challenge before him: advising the Government independently, addressing deep structural flaws in the administration of justice and attempting to rejuvenate the justice system.
Tall order, indeed.
But if anyone can do it, it is surely Mr Glover SC.
Join us in this week’s inspiring conversation with the Attorney General as we talk about:
💡 The childhood influences that shaped his values and path
💡 The brilliant class of 85
💡 His most rewarding case
💡 Accepting to become Attorney General
💡 Whether he misses private practice
💡 Urgent legal reforms
💡 The current state of the legal profession
💡 The Law Practitioners Disciplinary Proceedings Bill
💡 The proposed new Court of Appeal
💡 His favourite courtroom memories
... and much more!
It was an honour, Mr Attorney General. Thank you.

I am sometimes – perhaps more often than I should – quite critical of the education system that shaped me.
The rote learning, the pressure to excel academically, the intense competition to be laureate, the relentless private tuition.
However, I can only be grateful for the opportunities that the system gave me.
And when I look at my circle of friends from school, I realise that they share the same mixed emotions about our formative years.
I have known Adil Mohamedbhai since I was about 9. He is my oldest friend. Apart from probably being the brightest person I know, he is also one of the sweetest and kindest.
Our paths are oddly very similar. We both qualified as tax solicitors at magic circle firms in London and then converted to the bar.
That said, his career path into, and at, the English bar is rather exceptional.
In this fascinating conversation, Adil shares:
💡 stories from his time as judicial assistant to Lord Rodger and Lord Brown of the UK Supreme Court;
💡 what it was like to spend a week visiting the US Supreme Court and meeting Ruth Bader Ginsburg;
💡 his views on the British judicial system;
💡 why he gave up tax law (!) to specialise in chancery/commercial work;
💡 why meritocracy is at the heart of his core values.
Now a leading junior at Serle Court in London, he is so wholly deserving of what the directories say of him: “He is unbelievably bright, great at working in a team, uber responsive and someone who really gets stuck in. He is a star of the future” (Chambers UK Bar, 2025)
What an honour to have you on the podcast, my dear friend. Thank you for this candid and enriching conversation!
p.s – In my humble opinion, it is people like Adil who should be sitting on the Diaspora and Global Advisory Council (the set up of which was recently announced in this year’s Budget Speech).

The UK, in many ways, is a second home to me.
It is a country which welcomed me with open arms when I had barely reached adulthood and which enabled me to thrive in a wholly meritocratic environment.
Mauritius has always had a special relationship with the UK. In spite of the complex layers of our colonial past, the relationship remains an enduring one, from an economic, financial, social and cultural perspective.
I was excited to sit down with this week’s guest, Deeptee K.Bungaree-Gooheeram, to talk to us about the role of the UK’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT).
The DBT is an arm of His Majesty’s government and provides trade and investment services and practical support, thereby helping companies succeed in Mauritius, and Mauritius companies set up and invest in the UK.
Thank you Deeptee for shedding light on the crucial role of the DBT, sharing success stories (the recent trip with the Minister of Education being one) and why trade relationships are now more relevant than ever.

Having a curious mind and the humility to continuously learn is a common theme I find amongst many of my guests.
What I also take from those conversations is that there are no shortcuts to "success" and that circumventing hard work is only a recipe for short term gratification or glory.
This week's guest is no exception.
On the occasion of Music Day celebrated last Saturday, I was thrilled to sit down with music producer and DJ Ejilen who generously shared his story: why he chose music and music chose him, what drives him to pursue his passion in an incredibly difficult industry and his advice to aspiring artists.

🎨 What happens when Angelina Jolie, Victoria Beckham, Liam Gallagher and George Clooney all own your art?
According to this week’s guest, it’s just as rewarding as seeing anyone connect with his work. Because for him, art is about impact, not ego.
I'm thrilled to be joined this week by Dom Pattinson, an extremely talented British painter whose vibrant, provocative and often darkly humorous pieces have earned him a global following — from celebrity collectors to everyday admirers.
Dom’s style blends the raw energy of street art (inspired by his time in the former Soviet Union) with layers of irony, warmth and visual poetry.
In this fascinating conversation, Dom shares:
🎬 What it’s like to have a celebrity fanbase
🎨 His views on creative vs. generative art
🖼️ Children & art
💡 Making a living as an artist today

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the very definition of madness (*a quote widely attributed to Einstein, although not actually evidenced).
Anyone working in the global business sector might agree that we’ve spent the last decade (and more) repeating the same abstract conversations—strategy, innovation, value-add, transformation—without anchoring them in a unified and holistic public-private vision for our country.
This week’s guest put his finger on what’s been missing—and what it will truly take for our financial services sector not only to survive, but to evolve and thrive.
Richard Arlove, founder of Abax (now Ocorian), is, in my view, a visionary.
His approach to harnessing Africa’s potential is rooted not in extraction, but in genuine partnership and collaboration. He’s the first person I’ve spoken to in a long time who dares to imagine Mauritius as a real business hub for Africa—not just a conduit for DTAs, IPPAs or the usual soundbites you find in glossy brochures.
In this eye-opening conversation, we also talk about:
• What adaptive leadership looks like
• Why we should embrace feedback—especially the uncomfortable kind
· The LQ (Love Intelligence)
· The ABAX journey
• The need for a political vision that supports our IFC
• The quiet but vital role of our embassies
• And the urgent question of talent and labour shortages
This is an episode I cannot recommend enough. I loved this conversation.

When I think of PR and crisis management, my mind instantly goes to Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal — full of intrigue, drama, and plot twists.
The real world of PR may be less theatrical, but it still demands careful strategy, smart communication, and masterful diplomacy.
This week’s podcast guest, Samantha Seewoosurrun FCIPR, founder of Platform Africa, is a seasoned expert in this space and needs no introduction.
She reminded me of a timeless quote from Shakespeare’s As You Like It — one that feels just as relevant today:
“All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances…”
In this insightful episode, Samantha demystifies what public relations is really about — and how it threads through business, politics, and even personal branding.
She also shares remarkable stories from her past roles:
📍 Working for a U.S. Congressman
📍 Serving as a campaign strategist for the UK Conservative Party
📍 Advising on press and parliamentary matters at the European Parliament

As barristers — both young and less young — there’s always something to learn from those who came before us.
Our seniors carry with them stories, wisdom, and lived experience that no textbook could ever teach.
I’ve admired this week’s guest from afar for many years. After a fair bit of gentle pestering (mostly directed at his junior!), he graciously accepted my invitation to join the podcast and share his journey.
I’m deeply grateful to Antoine Domingue SC for such a rich and generous exchange.

Imagine deciding to climb a 4,500m mountain at just 10 years old.
I tried picturing my own son doing it… and honestly, I couldn’t.
The sheer courage, determination, and resilience it must have taken for that young boy to set the goal of climbing Mount Meru —and then achieve it, despite challenges like getting lost in the middle of the night (!)—is nothing short of extraordinary.
That defining moment set the stage for a life of adventure. This week’s guest didn’t stop at one mountain—he went on to explore the world, working across multiple continents before eventually calling Mauritius home.
Join me in conversation with Mehul Bhatt, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer at Bioculture Group and Director at Velogic as we discuss:

“Life is politics”
These words made me pause for thought when I told this week’s guest that I do not discuss politics on the podcast.
In popular culture, "politics" has been reduced to bipartisan debates (and dare I add, drama), when in reality, politics is woven into every aspect of our lives—our rights and responsibilities, our food security, our economy, our future.
For Dr. The Honourable Arvin Boolell, politics was never just a career choice—it was a calling, shaped by a lifetime of public service. Growing up in a family of politicians, he saw leadership and governance up close through his father, Sir Satcam Boolell.
But despite this legacy, he magnanimously calls himself “the black sheep of the family”, someone who had to overcome setbacks early in life and strive to become much more than simply being “his father’s son.” In doing so, he came to believe that politics should always be about service, not power.
On the occasion of Mauritius' 57th Independence Day, I had the privilege of sitting down with him to get a glimpse of the man behind the politician.
As the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, our guest also discusses:
🌱 Why we should eat what we grow and grow what we eat.
🌍 What it will take to build a self-sufficient, resilient small island economy.
🌊 The untapped potential of the Blue Economy.
⚓ How Mauritius can transform its port into a thriving regional hub.
… And of course, what “independence” means to him, 57 years on.
Thank you, Dr Boolell for sharing your story with such candour and humility.
Special thank you to awesome Natacha Soulange who edited this teaser in two days!

I find myself changing my views on AI nearly every week.
One week, I’m a staunch critic, lamenting how it stifles creativity, dulls our minds, and makes us lazier and quite frankly - dumber.
The next week, I'm captivated by its potential to revolutionise fields like medicine and physics and to enhance our productivity and efficiency.
The truth likely lies somewhere in the middle. Like many aspects of life, it’s ultimately about how we choose to engage with it.
Many of you will recognise this week’s guest, Julien Guillot-Sestier, as “Mr. AI.” He views innovation through a holistic lens, helping companies and individuals embrace technology to enhance their capabilities rather than retreating from it.
In our conversation, we tackle pressing questions about AI, including:
💡 DeepSeek vs. OpenAI
💡 The choice between resisting or embracing technology
💡 The phenomenon of AI hallucinations
💡 Addressing privacy concerns
💡 The balance between liberalism and regulation
💡 Harnessing AI for more impactful and effective communication
💡 The connection between AI and social media
💡 The essential role of storytelling in the AI landscape
While I’m still navigating my thoughts on AI's role in our lives—both now and in the future—this conversation has helped demystify many of the complexities surrounding the topic.
Watch out for the full episode out on Friday on our usual channels!

A huge thank you to all our listeners, guests, and supporters for making this possible. Here’s to another year of storytelling.
"In the courtroom, the lawyer is both a student and a teacher." – Ruth Bader Ginsburg
For the last episode of Beyond the Black Letter Law for 2024, it felt only right to reflect on the art of advocacy and what it takes to become a truly skilled litigator.
This week, we have the privilege of welcoming Sanjay Bhuckory, SC, a seasoned Senior Counsel, to share his remarkable journey. From the life-changing movie that inspired him to pivot his career path to invaluable insights on appearing before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, Sanjay also offers his perspective on the future of the legal profession.
Listening to Sanjay after the recording reminded me of a timeless truth: books can teach you the law, but experience shapes the advocate. It’s a gift we should never take for granted—and I found myself unintentionally taking notes!

🌍 The global reality of human trafficking is both sobering and terrifying.
Did you know:
❗ Over 27 million people worldwide are victims of human trafficking, according to the latest UN estimates
❗ 75% of victims are women and girls, with nearly 25% being children
❗ Human trafficking generates an estimated $150 billion annually in illegal profits, making it one of the most lucrative and pervasive forms of organised crime.
In Mauritius, the ODPP MAURITIUS (Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions) has recognised the urgency of this issue, establishing a dedicated taskforce to combat human trafficking at the national level.
This week, we’re honoured to have Nataraj Muneesamy, Assistant DPP and Chair of the taskforce, as our podcast guest. Nataraj delves into:
💡 What human trafficking truly means.
💡 The challenges of detection and reporting.
💡 How we can collectively raise awareness and drive action against this global crisis.
He also shares his enriching experience at the International Criminal Court in The Hague and his journey in building an incredible career in criminal law.
On a personal note, I’ve been fortunate to call Nataraj a dear friend for over 25 years. From our days as hopeful teenagers participating in the Model United Nations in 1998, I’ve witnessed firsthand his moral rectitude and deep sense of duty and justice. Thank you, Nat, for your service to this country.

“Marketing is no longer about the stuff that you make, but about the stories you tell” – Seth Godin
Before Prism Chambers, I genuinely thought marketing meant sharing updates on social media, attending or organising business events or publishing articles. In time, I started to realise the distinction between marketing, sales and branding.
All the pieces of the puzzle fell into place when I heard the TEDx speech of Laurent Bourelly, marketing guru, on the similarities between marketing and dating.

Any form of violence, whether it be physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, or mental, is unacceptable.
Did you know that, according to a recent study (2022), 1 in 3 Mauritians believes that a woman should obey her husband, and 1 in 5 Mauritians thinks that a woman must ask her husband for permission before going out?
Shocking, but true.
Let’s be very clear: this reality affects all social strata and all communities.
I am so grateful to Melanie Vigier de Latour-Berenger, a psychosociologist, for sharing her expertise with us to enlighten us on such an important, and yet still so taboo, topic.
As deplorable and insidious as physical violence, are more "invisible" and subtle forms of violence such as coercive control (typically among couples) : control over outings, phone privacy, who they can talk to or confide in, making jealous accusations, gaslighting, criticisms or humiliations over appearance or character traits. We also discuss the violence that modern technologies can inflict on a child (if they are misused or misunderstood).
I would be willing to bet that you know at least one person who might be a victim of one of these forms of abuse.
As Melanie says so well at the end of the episode: sometimes you should overstep the line and speak up.
Comme Melanie le dit si bien en fin d’épisode : sometimes you should overstep the line and speak up.

🐛 Should I give my children worm medicine?
❓ What is the link between the use of sanitisers and Type 1 diabetes?
😷 Is wearing face masks in a post covid world harming my immune system?
🍷 Will a glass of red wine a day keep my heart healthy?

1 in 4 Mauritians have diabetes. Out of those, half are undiagnosed. If those statistics do not frighten you, consider this. The average yearly number of diabetes amputees in Mauritius is 500. This is huge for a small island nation with a population of only 1.3m.
Not to mention the other devastating metabolic diseases afflicting our society and putting a huge burden on the health system: cardiovascular health, high blood pressure and obesity.
The majority of these cases are preventable by implementing incredibly simple changes to one’s lifestyle and diet.
We are thrilled to welcome Dr Damien Steciuk, General Practitioner, to share his knowledge and wisdom about:
Diabetes, pre-diabetes and insulin resistance: what is it, how to identify if you are at risk, and what you can do about it
Heart health: is it really about cholesterol?
Stress: how to identify it, the damaging effects and possible solutions
Mind/body medicine: myth or reality
The gut health debate: what is gut microbiome and how you can improve it
Is exercise the magical cure of all ails: benefits and limitations
Sleep: why we sleep so little and why we should all aspire to sleep more.
