Peiter Zatko “Mudge”, former CISO of Twitter and now whistleblower, was explicit when he testified to Congress about Twitter Security Flaws. Mudge outright accused Twitter executives of misleading the government, users, and shareholders regarding the company’s security practices and placing profit before security.

The testimony brings up several great strategic points for all consumers and executives when it comes to cybersecurity and privacy.

This is just the beginning, with legal suits now coming out. Twitter has some tough choices ahead.

Albania has expelled Iranian diplomats and severed diplomatic relations with Iran because of cyberattacks from the Iranian Intelligence Agency that targeted government services and websites. Such an icy diplomatic response has never happened before and it may open the door as a precedent for how many countries will respond to future nation state attacks.

Ransomware is a growing scourge. Is it possible to eradicate this entire class of attacks? I think it is but in today’s Cybersecurity Insights interview I have a lively debate with Malcolm Harkins on criminalizing ransomware payments and different approaches to undermine Ransomware attacks!

I truly like vigorously debating cybersecurity issues with Malcolm. He brings great insights, passion, and experience to discussions with a willingness to aggressively debate in a constructive way.

We cover a lot of ground in our chat, including the potential merits of denying ransomware cybercriminals their prize by criminalizing payments, and explore other avenues to deter, protect, and prosecute ransomware attacks to mitigate risks.

Happy to share the video webinar of a powerhouse panel discussing the challenges and risks of firmware based cyberattacks. Moderated by Robert Rodriquez, founder of SINET, the panelists included David Hahn, Yuri Bulygin, Steve Orrin, Malcolm Harkins, and myself.

Over a dozen different firmware components exist in every PC and twice as much in servers. Firmware controls basic hardware functions in every network and IoT device. As attackers seek to exploit vulnerabilities in this core layer, cybersecurity risk professionals are pivoting to improve their knowledge and adapt their defensive mitigation tactics.

The panel discussed the:

  • Risks and challenges with firmware security and how it must be incorporated into the baseline cybersecurity models.
  • How and why attackers are taking advantage of firmware-based exploits
  • Availability of off-the-shelf boot-level attack kits
  • Concerns for UEFI-level tactics are being shared in dark web forums that can go unnoticed by traditional vulnerability, risk and end endpoint security programs.
  • Limitations of traditional security tools to detect firmware tampering, compromises, and malicious activities

The cybersecurity industry had challenges with bringing in new blood and facilitating the career growth. Misinformation has unfortunately played a part in making various roles appear unattainable, when we should be doing the opposite. We should be embracing flexibility, identifying opportunities, and most of all discussing realistic expectations and roles.

I stumbled across an article that lists qualifications for Chief Information Security Officers. I was shocked at the inaccuracy. I think many great candidates would be turned off by this and others, who have some of the listed skills would be surprised by how they are not applicable to the CISO role.

One of the greatest challenges for a cybersecurity leader is to convey the present digital risks upward to the c-suite and Board of Directors, and represent the value of security to protect the organization’s assets, reputation, capabilities, and people. Executive leadership is where vital support or resistance momentum will materialize with potency for cybersecurity initiatives.

Today, I am talking with Naomi Buckwalter about how to communicate cybersecurity to the Board. Naomi is a virtual CISO, Director of Information Security, and the founder of the Cybersecurity Gatebreakers Foundation. She brings a wealth of experience, insights, and solid recommendations for cybersecurity leaders.

The 2021 Front Lines cybersecurity conference brought together a panel to discuss the challenges faced by the industry with growing security threats and far too cybersecurity professionals to combat them. The “Closing the Cyber Skills Gap” panel featured Davina Pruitt, Naomi Buckwalter, and was moderated by Matthew Rosenquist on Oct 21st 2021.

One of the most pressing challenges for the digitally connected and transforming world is the undermining of security and trust. Cybersecurity is the barrier protecting our systems, data, privacy, services, and capabilities. But the threats far exceed the capacity of those professionals that guard against their attacks. We are experiencing a momentous deficit in the talent pool, with mounting demands growing every year.

The panel discusses how to reverse the situation and sustainably satisfy the human resources needed to make our evolving digital world secure.

Over 30 nations came together to address ransomware. The results were disappointing, unimpressive, and lacking the bold innovation needed to stem the meteoric rise of ransomware that is targeting businesses and the critical infrastructure that citizens depend upon for security, health, services, and prosperity.

This was a wasted opportunity to establish a meaningful strategy that targets the heart of ransomware and deals a crushing blow to mitigate this risk to the global digital ecosystem. We must do better!

I think this is the most significant data breach this year! The supply-chain/3rd party style breach likely exposed billions of mobile text messages and 2FA security codes, giving attackers the ability to gain selective access to very sensitive systems and data.
