City Church Manchester elder Sam Hyde takes us through 1 Samuel 28, where King Saul who is in complete spiritual decline, continues to fall further from God, seeking advice from spiritual mediums to consult the "ghost" of the prophet Samuel, rather than turning to God. What does this rather odd biblical chapter have to with us as followers of God today? Find out by listening.
Our guest preacher Daniel Grimwade, who is the Yorkshire director for FIEC, continues our sermon series, taking us through 1 Samuel 25.
In his last week at City Church, Eric takes a break from our 1 Samuel series to take us through Genesis 50 and how Joseph responds to hardship and betrayal.
How do you respond to the hardest moments in your life? When things don’t work out the way you planned or hoped? Do you panic? Hide from it as though you’re burying your head in the sand? Or grit your teeth, pull your socks up and endure/push through? What’s your response when hard times come? Do you question God? Where is God in the middle of this? Listen to Find out what the Biblical way to respond to hardship is.

Do you feel lonely and unseen, tired and alone? This talk tells the story of someone who gave everything, yet was betrayed, rejected, and left to suffer alone. But it’s not just his story. It’s ours too. What if your loneliness is a clue that you were made for something more? This is about the kind of love that stays when everyone else walks away, the kind that sees you at your worst and still doesn’t leave.
Why do we strive so hard for the world’s honour? It is something we deeply crave and pursue. In this sermon, we see that chasing worldly honour can lead to shame, as it did for Saul. But we are also shown where true honour is found, an honour that shame cannot take away, but can only bring to completion.
In a world where relationships often feel transactional and self-serving, the story of Jonathan and David in 1 Samuel 20 points us to covenant love – a deeper, truer kind of love. A love ultimately rooted in Jesus Christ's love for us. A love that's inviting us to be faithful and present in a culture marked by abandonment.'
Boaz walks us Through 1 Samuel 19 on the contrast between King Saul and young David, and how Saul's unrelenting pursuit of honour leads him to a place shame.
In a world of constant comparison and fierce competition, how do we respond when others succeed? This sermon introduces us to two men in the shadow of David’s rising star: Saul, who responds with envy and hatred, and Jonathan, who chooses love and surrender. It explores how envy poisons the heart and holds us back from truly loving, and how both Saul and Jonathan ultimately point us to the true King, the one who empowers us to love as we have been loved.
Life is full of giants, real threats that shake us. So how do we stand firm? This sermon walks through the story of David and Goliath not just a tale of bravery, but a battle that reveals where true courage is found, and how our deepest fears can be faced with unshakable confidence.
Where do we find the power to forgive when it feels impossible? In the final part of our Philemon series, Ralph unpacks how the gospel empowers us to do the unthinkable, and become a truly forgiving community.
If it is truly that glorious, should we be surprised that it’s also costly?
Guest speaker Mark Glew opens Acts 11 to show us the God who paid the ultimate price to come to us, and how responding to that grace empowers us to bear the cost of gospel ministry.
Why can we serve others, even those we find difficult or consider enemies? In John 13, Jesus does the unthinkable: the King kneels to wash the feet of His disciples, including the one who would betray Him. In this sermon, Matt unpacks what it means for Christ to lead as a true servant, and how His example shapes the way we serve Him and others in response.
What does true change look like, and what kind of person are we being renewed to become? In this sermon, Matt highlights three markers of a person being spiritually renewed.
Matt walks us through the first seven verses of the book of Philemon, exploring three markers of what it means to be used by God.
Why do we hope? Is it just wishful thinking? Why are we wired to long for something that might never come? Maybe you’ve felt that tension, hoping in the dark, longing for light. But what if there’s a hope that isn’t fragile? A hope that’s certain. Grounded. Necessary. A hope that doesn’t just survive the chaos, it transforms it. The kind of hope that changes everything...

On Friday night of the City Church weekend away, in the first of four talks, Dave Gobbett walks us through the first part of John 17 and breaks down Jesus's prayer.
What if our cities aren’t our final home? In this sermon, see how the Bible reimagines our cities—not just as broken battlegrounds, but as glimpses of a greater city that is already here, and yet still to come. Your church in the city.
What if the cities we’re striving to build—cities of peace and prosperity—will never be free from crisis? Is there a greater city that holds the hope we need? In this sermon, Matt delves into the city of God—why it matters, who belongs to it, and how it is being built right here, right now.
Our cities reflect both beauty and brokenness—places of human creativity yet marked by sin. In this sermon, we explore the reality of judgment, and how God calls His people to labour faithfully for renewal. How do we live in the tension between the fallen city and God’s coming kingdom? Watch now to discover how we can bless rather than consume, stay rather than escape, and see our cities through God’s eyes.
Why do cities draw us in? From the beginning, cities have been places of beauty and brokenness, creativity and corruption. This sermon explores the story of the first city, how it reveals the good and the bad of every city after it, and what it reveals about our deepest longings about every city we crave and build.
Is sexuality just about sex, or is it about something far deeper—belonging, identity, safety, and the longing to be truly known?
What seems like a search for who we’re attracted to is, at its core, a search for belonging, identity, and meaning.
This is why the fight for sexuality has become so fierce—it carries the weight of our deepest human desires.
But Matt reveals how sexuality was never meant to bear that weight—and points us to what truly can and has borne that weight.
Ralph unpacks Gender in part 4 of our Origins series. God’s original design, the brokenness and different types of dysphoria we all experience, and how Christ redeems gender—leaving His glory and beauty to enter fully into the discomfort and distress of the human experience to restore us to our most beautiful and God-intended selves.
Life has become a constant hustle-always moving, always striving, yet never quite arriving or never at peace. This restlessness isn't just about busyness or lack of it. It is a soul-ache for peace, purpose and security that this world can never give. What is this rest? Where and how can we have it in the midst of life's restlessness?
Why do we find work hard and painful. What is the point of work, why do we work, and can work become joyful? Eric takes us to the beginning, showing us God's original purpose for work, how we deviated from it and that brought pain into our work and finally, how God has restored work and removed the pain.
Who is God and how does our knowledge of Him impact who we are, the way the world is been made to be, and where we are headed.
Money isn't just a number in a bank account--it reveals what we love, what we depend on, and what we expect. As we close our series on Christian growth, we're looking at how giving shapes us into Christ's beauty. Listen now and discover reasons to step into the joy of generosity.
Have you or do you feel like life's struggles make it hard sometimes to really believe that God is still with you? In those moments, doubt can feel overwhelming. Matt in this sermon, explores the hope to hold on to that will make us trust that God is truly present even when life feels uncertain.
We are controlled by what we love the most. True Christlikeness comes when Christian truths move from our minds to our hearts, allowing us to deeply experience Christ’s love. Ralph unpacks Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3:14-16, showing how intimacy with Christ transforms and shapes our lives
Our modern world celebrates independence, yet it’s led to an epidemic of loneliness. Why? Because while we chase self-sufficiency, we still need connection and dependence. In this message, Matt reveals that the cure for loneliness isn’t just finding a community to feel loved—it’s learning to love and depend on God first. Click to watch.
As we start a new year, we might be feeling weary or lost. But through all the seasons that the year will surely bring, we can find unshakeable peace and guidance only with the Lord. Listen to see how the good shepherd cares for you, leads you, and restores your soul.
For our fourth and final talk in this years Christmas series, we learn from Eric that Life is full of storms, and even the best-prepared life is not storm-proof. But how do we find peace—not just in life’s daily storms, but in the ultimate storm of death? In this message, Eric reveals how the peace of God carries us through the final storm and transforms the way we navigate life’s challenges today.
For our third talk in this years Christmas series, we learn from Ralph that the true Spirit of Christmas is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit shows up throughout the entire Bible whether implicitly (old Testament) or explicitly (when He’s sent out to the first believers). As a reoccurring character throughout the Bible, and one of the three persons of the Godhead (the Holy Trinity), we see that the Spirit is in very nature God, and though he is seperate in personhood, he is One with the Father and the Son, and shares their Goodness and Love with us. Then wow does the Holy Spirit connect with Christmas and why should we care? Ralph explains why in the talk.
For our second talk in this years Christmas series, we learn that Bread is a symbol or theme signifying survival, and the bible talks uses the symbolic imagery of bread quite a lot. Matt follows the bread crumbs all through the bible and ultimately to Christ as the bread of life. What does this mean for us today? Listen to find out.
For the first talk in our new Christmas series in 2024, Ralph walks us through the biblical theology of the seed and how its used in the bible from genesis to Christ's return in revelation. Who or what is the seed and why is it important? Find out in this talk! (8 December 2024 - 10:30 am). We apologise for the low quality on this talk as it was only in the morning the day of the Carol Service, so was not livestreamed.
For this year's evangelistic talk at our annual carol service, Ralph talks about the gift that is freely given and humbly received with great joy and how this gift changes our world.
In the final episode of our "unconventional wisdom" series on Jesus's 'Sermon on the Mount', after seeing the radical beauty of God's Kingdom, pastor Matt takes us through Matthew 7:21-29 and challenges us to inquire if we are indeed a part of this kingdom. We also learn that the phrase 'this too shall pass' only applies to Christians---as we know that all the struggles, sin, and pain, of our lives was taken on by Christ and will not be with us forever. It is only if we build our life on Christ's foundation, “the rock,” rather than the “sand” in which the world tells us we should build our life on, that our “house” will weather the storm of life.
Jesus says 'narrow is the way that leads to life'. That confounds our modern sensibilities which assumes that more, bigger, wide,... is better. Ralph dug deep to show us the wisdom in the way, the right way that leads to life; a wisdom that is much needed especially for our age.
Boaz leads us through Matthew 7:1-12, where Jesus points out the reality that we all judge others and feel good about it, yet expect others not to judge us. Jesus shows us that in reality, He is the one who in his perfection has every right to judge us, yet gives us unlimited grace despite our sin and dies for us instead. Therefore rather than pointing out other people's sins, Boaz discusses how we should examine our own shortcomings and come to God with them. When we see our own shortcomings, we can realise our need for Christ and his grace, which changes our heart and helps us to reflect Christ's love towards others rather than judge them (which is a way of trying to be God ourselves).
In spite of more stuff, more money, more information, more food options, we are increasingly becoming more and more worried as a people. Will having more control cure our worry? Eric shows through God's word and what really lies at the root of our worry and leads us to what can really cure that worry.
That we can reach out to the ultimately powerful God and call Him father, is the most stunning thing ever. In this sermon, Ralph shows us how to pray and what it means to speak to a God who is close to us and wants us to draw close to Him.
Are we living for likes or for love? In a world that pushes us to present only our 'best selves,' Jesus calls us to something radically different. In this sermon from Matthew 6:1-8 and 16-18, Eric unpacks how Christ challenges the pursuit of human approval and invites us into a life of authentic faith.
Can we show love in the face of injustice? Does turning the other cheek mean giving up justice to be loving? In this sermon from Matthew 5:33-38, Matt (the preacher) shows true love as neither retaliating nor being walked over. Instead, God calls us to respond with radical grace while still confronting evil.

Ralph takes us through Matthew 5, where we learn the depth of our lust, how it enslaves us, that radical action is required to fight it, and how Jesus is the only one who can free us from it.
Ralph takes us through Matthew 5:21-30, to help us self reflect our hearts and how we hurt others, while showing us Jesus the only one who can grant us total transformation from the inside out.
https://www.citychurchmanchester.org
Matt takes us through Matthew 5:17-20 in the third sermon from our sermon on the mount series; in this passage, he shows us through Jesus's words that while God's standards are perfect and it's impossible for us to live up to the standard of God's goodness to enter Heaven, that God fortunately in his goodness provided Jesus as a sacrifice, and through Jesus is the only way for us to have eternal life.

Matt shows us that being an authentic christian means being a christian who lives in accordance to the truth of the Gospel.

Through 1 Samuel 7:2-17, Eric explains to us what repentance really means. In this passage, the Israelites successfully defeating the Philistines in battle, only after having turned back towards God and repenting of their error. Eric points out that there are several key steps to repentance in this passage that are relevant to us and our relationship with God today: Instead of merely turning from sin (step one), we must actively turn towards God (step two), and then remind ourselves of our repentance (step three).
Matt takes us through the entirety of 1 Samuel Chapter 4, showing us not only God's faithfulness through various trials, but His ever-willingness to forgive us when we repent.

After finishing Ecclesiastes last week, we are back for our “fourth season” of the gospel of Mark, this time focusing on chapter fourteen, where Matt discusses the dramatic final moments of Jesus’s ministry: though Christ knows Peter will deny him and that the disciples will let him down in Gethsemane, he still loves them and dies for them. Matt points out that we, like the disciples, let Jesus down due to our sinful natures, but Christ still died for us and will never stop loving us.

In spite of fighting off illness, Matt helped unpack our final sermon in Ecclesiates, covering the last two chapters of the book. For one last time, he dives back into the writings of Qoheleth, the preacher, as Qoheleth unpacks the one thing we all have to face in life and our greatest fear: death. But Matt reminds us that despite the inescapable reality of death, there is still hope for us through Jesus Christ.
This week, we dive into Ecclesiastes 9, 10 and 11, where we are reminded that there is a deadening and frustrating powerlessness in our lives that we all experience. While Matt unpacks the preacher's practical advice to get out of powerless places, he reminds us that this advice can only work when we have the gospel in mind, setting our hearts on Christ.

After our hiatus for Evangelism Sunday last week, we dive right back into Ecclesiastes (chapters 7-9) with Ralph, where we learn that secularism---whether through pragmatism, hedonism, or moral relativism--- can't provide solutions to the "meaninglessness" and hardships in life, but the only solution that truly satisfies and addresses our needs is Christ.

Matt unpacks the writings of "Qoheleth" in Ecclesiastes 5 and 6, which reveals that humans are vulnerable in three key ways: fear of God, fear of the betrayal of others, and fear of our emotions betraying us. Matt explains however, through the text, that the only way to get past such fears is to face them head on, as Jesus ultimately exemplified by deciding to face death and die for our sins. If we follow Jesus, and "carry our cross" as He did, all the while embracing our suffering and vulnerability, then despite our lives being difficult, we will be joyful. And greater than that, we will have eternal life in Him.
