You should have an injury prevention mobility program. If you do not you are 99.9% more like to get hurt.
If you are hurt and can’t play, all of this can be for nothing.
I offer a mobility program and an injury prevention program on my website that you are welcome to. I post free videos on Instagram and youtube as well.
Be sure that you are doing MOBILITY. My assumption is you all enjoy working out and probably like a good lift, but you probably don’t love a good stretch quite as much. Stretching is important, but mobility is really the keyword. Mobility is being strong in flexible positions.
To see some mobility workouts check out my page on Instagram and Youtube.
Social media is so important. They will look at your Instagram and Twitter so be sure it is presentable.
Bonus points if your Instagram or if you have a dedicated Instagram to your college soccer journey so we can get a taste of what you are like
Use Instagram Reels
Yes, follow coaches on social media and try and message them. Be sure your messages are well written and grammar error-free.
Anything good that you do for your high school or club team post it. It will help in the long run.
An actual following can be created by posting consistently over many years. People like seeing a “story.”
Tag a school that you want to go to when you do well.
This game is about playing well in front of the right person at the right time, but since you don’t know when or where that will be you have to aspire play well every day.
If you are having trouble contacting a coach that you want to get a hold of consider this:
(Assuming you just graduated your sophomore year and are going into Jr. year.
If you are not a US National team kid or playing for an MLS academy and are trying to contact UCLA, Wake Forest, Michigan, Maryland, and other top 25 schools they are likely to never respond, and if they do it will be to come to their camp.
If you want to get seen by those schools then the only choice you have is the camp.
Yes, the camp will cost money, but if you impress you could be considered. Walk on’s have gone on to have great careers and they often did not even go to camp, they just tried out.
All that said my suggestion to you is:
Narrow down your choices to 15 schools
5 D1
5 D2
5 D3
Create an excel sheet with when the camps are to all of those teams. Have all the dates laid out in front of you so you can determine which camps you can feasibly go to. They will overlap.
Then once you have decided which you want to go to. Begin e-mailing and calling! Yes call!
Explain who you are, who you play for, if you know anyone that they may also know, (mutual acquaintances can be so helpful) and explain you will be attending the camp and look forward to meeting them.
Add in your game schedule as well.
If you are lucky they will be ready it see you coming to their camp, enjoy your highlight video, and then come to a game of yours before the camp because they know you are invested in them they will be more likely to invest in you.
Then if they see you in a game and then see you at camp this is often enough for them to offer a spot.
I have templates of how to call, and e-mail. If you would like to book a session with me to create your customized plan be sure to reach out.
If I believe you are of the college level I will reach out to college coaches on your behalf, but for this, I am quite particular, but feel free to send me your video.
I have helped clients that way through this podcast.
What if I want to go Pro?
Trying to play professionally is a very similar journey to playing college soccer.
You must call and e-mail thousands of times in order to get your chance.
You must go to camps
You must have a highlight video
Very similar to playing college
College soccer internship (USL II)
Highlight Video
-message coaches
Agent - linkedIN, tryouts, who do you know
Open Tryout
Invite tryout
Pre-season
Go abroad? Dual citizenship?
Look up:
PSC
Soccer Viza
AX Soccer tours
Do you need a Private Soccer coach to play college soccer?
A private soccer coach will of course help
However, if you or your child does not love playing soccer I would not recommend a private coach
A wall and youtube can basically do everything a private coach can
The most important thing is repetition
What is very important is a team coach. A team coach cannot be replaced by a wall or youtube videos. You need to be on a team coached by a great coach.
You also need to be playing with other players.
The best training you can get is training with players better than you.
Two kinds of College camps
Big one where many schools attend
Little one where a few schools or just one school attends
Pro’s of going to a big camps:
Con’s of going to big camps:
Pro’s of small camp
Con’s of a small camp
My recommendation is if you know your dream school go to their individual camp. If you are not sure what school or schools you want yet go to a big camp where there are many coaches
One of the best part of these camps is you get to meet the coaches. By meeting you the coaches you can decide if you would even like to play for that coach.
If the coaches do not pick you it does not mean you are not good enough. It just means they did not pick you. If you want this really badly you have to go again and again.
If you go to 5 camps and no one shows an interest in you at all 4 levels
D1
D2
D3
NAIA
Then it would be time to consider the fact that maybe college soccer is not an opportunity for you.
However, if you are that person who has gone to 5 camps and still has received no interest yet you are determined to go play college soccer, schedule a call with me and I will see if I can help.
