Jack brings deep experience in computer vision and robotic software to his role as CEO. Jack began his career as a software engineer at the MITRE Corporation, building computer vision systems for UAV imagery before a brief stint as a Robotics PhD at George Washington University, where he researched long-term, collaborative robotic autonomy and perception. Climate change and greenhouse gas accumulation are, in essence, a three-dimensional problem because we have emitted so much gas in a three-dimensional space, Earth's atmosphere, and it is very freely mixed. To clean this enormous volume of space, we have in front of us a 3D engineering problem, and if you factor in the time needed to suck all the air out and circulate it through a filter, then it becomes a four-dimensional problem.
We are obsessed with removing greenhouse gases to try to open a window so the heat from Earth can escape. What if instead of letting the heat escape from Earth, we try to find a way to stop it from developing in the first place, just by reducing the amount of heat produced on the ground as the sun shines on the planet? Peter Reinhardt is the CEO and Founder of Charm Industrial, a company that converts carbon-rich biomass into a liquid that can then be pumped back underground for permanent storage. Prior to Charm Industrial, Peter was the CEO and Co-Founder of Segment, a SaaS customer data platform that was acquired by Twilio for $3.2 billion in 2020. In this episode of Hardware to Save a Planet, Dylan is joined by Ben Chehebar, VP of Hardware at RoadRunner Recycling, and Jason Gates, Senior VP of Strategy at RoadRunner Recycling, for a free-flowing discussion on Ben and Jason’s solution of making waste disposal more sustainable and efficient. The concept was ideated at their start-up Compology, where they installed sensors in dumpsters to measure how full the dumpster was so that the disposal agencies would have to make fewer trips. This was a positive step towards making waste disposal more efficient and reducing the carbon footprint of the trucks clearing the dumpsters. RoadRunner Recycling has recently acquired Compology.
Dylan met Ben and Jason at Synapse, where they were developing the first iteration of their camera for the dumpsters. Ben has a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, while Jason has a Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environment Engineering from the University of Maryland.

Bret shares the plan to convert biomass to biochar to sequester carbon and use the biochar to enrich the agricultural soil. Removing biomass from the forest makes the forest fire adaptable and reduces the incidence of wildfires.
Bret Richmond is a mechanical and systems engineer with over eighteen years of experience. At heart, he is a conservationist, and his current role at C6 combines his skillset and passion. In his previous role, Bret worked as the Principal Systems Engineer at Synapse Product Development for over eleven years.

Robert shares his journey of inventing a greener electric motor for electric vehicles that don’t use rare earth magnets.Electric motors in all EVs use magnets made from rare earth materials like Neodymium. These elements are found next to highly radioactive materials like Uranium and Thorium, and purifying them creates a highly toxic effluent. Refining rare earth elements into magnets is expensive, thereby increasing the electric motor's cost. Robert is developing an electric motor that uses conventional magnets while overcoming the torque limitation of using conventional magnets.
