Most of us are living at the intersection of creativity and business.
And sometimes… that intersection feels more like a head-on collision than a smooth merge lane.
Some of us love the creative side — the choreography, the class planning, the student moments. But the business side? The numbers, the systems, the growth strategy? It feels like a foreign language.
Others are the opposite — they thrive in planning, love a good spreadsheet, and secretly enjoy a to-do list... but find it hard to carve out space for creative flow.
But here’s the really exciting thing I want you to hear:
If you set your studio up right — with the right structure, systems, and support — you get to spend MORE time doing theparts you love, and LESS time getting stuck in the bits you don’t.

It’s not about having the biggest studio. It’s not about being the loudest or the most popular. It’s not about becoming the most followed account on Instagram.
Scaling your studio is about building something that works.
It’s about creating a business that is profitable, spacious, and supportive of your life. One that gives you control, predictability, and breathing room...not burnout.

When it comes to planning for a new year, there are so many directions you could take. You might start with your big goals, your marketing plan, your finances, or even your team structure.
All of those are important. But after decades of running a studio and now working closely with owners every day, I’ve realised there’s one place that makes everything else easier.
The timetable.
Your timetable is more than just a schedule of classes. It’s the foundation on which enrolments, retention, staffing, and growth are built.
And if you want to feel confident about where your studio is heading in 2026, the smartest place to begin is right here.
So, in today’s episode, we’re talking about why the timetable should be the starting point of your studio planning, what smart owners are already doing now, and how you can use it as a strategic tool for growth...not just a piece of admin.

Someone asked me this question the other day:
“If you had to start all over again from scratch, what would you do first?”
But before I give you that, I want to explain why my answer is different now than it was five or ten years ago.Because being a customer...being a parent...in 2025 is different.
Now, you can roll your eyes and wish it were different, or… you can accept that it is what it is.
Then, decide how to meet it head-on in a way that still aligns with your studio values.

The studios that retain 85–90% of their students?
It’s not luck...it’s strategy, scripts, and systems.
In this episode, I’m sharing the exact scripts I used inside my own studio to consistently retain 90%+ of our students year after year...especially during key growth and scaling seasons.

After years of hiring, delegating, creating job roles, and navigating different personalities inside the studio, I’ve learned that successful hiring is rarely about finding someone with the perfect résumé.
Instead, it’s about finding someone who fits. Someone who gets it.
Someone who can lift the energy of the space, do their jobwell, and carry themselves with ownership - particularly when no one’s watching.
In this episode, I want to walk you through what i’ve learned - through my own experience - as a studio owner who’s tried it all.
It’s tricky, isn’t it? When you know you need help in your business, but you’re not quite sure where to start or what that help should even look like.
What should they actually be doing?
What can I realistically hand over?
And how do I know I’m structuring this right?
I get it - because I’ve lived it.
And in this episode, I walk you through exactly how the role of Studio Manager evolved inside my own business.
Not just the polished end result, but the messy, real, behind-the-scenes version too.

I always say, it’s not about how many students you can get.
...It’s about how many you can keep.
Because when you think about it, every time you lose a student, you lose their term fee, their concert costume, their merchandise purchase, their word-of-mouth potential, andtheir impact on your community vibe.
So if we can keep more dancers longer, not only do we grow, but we grow in a way that feels grounded, connected, and joyful.
If you’re attracting the right people and making it easy for them to try a class, this part becomes really simple...but only if you’ve done the groundwork.
...Because what happens during and right after that first class? That’s where the magic is or the missed opportunity.
In Part 2 of the Simplifying Your Foundations Series, I’m diving into the next step after attracting the right families - enticing them to actually try a class.
If you’re getting enquiries but they’re not turning into bookings, this episode will walk you through what to say, what to offer, and how to make that “yes” feel like a no-brainer. From VIP enrolment bonuses to simple follow-up reminders, I’ll show you how to build trust and make trial bookings effortless.
Whether you’re just getting started or refining your enrolment flow, this episode will help you turn interest into action, without feeling salesy or overcomplicating things.

One minute it’s AI, the next it’s TikTok, and somehow you’re also meant to be designing concert packs, replying to enquiries, and thinking about retention, all before 9am.
If your brain feels full, your list feels endless, and you’re wondering how on earth you’re meant to grow your studio when you can barely keep up, you are not alone.
If you want to scale, you have to simplify...and that is what this episode is all about.
In today's episode, we’re talking about enrollments and, more specifically, why more marketing might not be the solution you think it is.
Because I hear this line from studio owners constantly:
“If I could just get more students… everything would feeleasier.”
But here’s the thing...sometimes, getting more students isn’tabout pushing harder or creating more marketing content.
Sometimes, what’s really holding you back is hiding in plainsight - in your systems, your messaging, your follow-up, or even your mindset.
Let’s dive into what’s really stopping your enrolmentgrowth—and how to fix it.
Today’s episode is going to hit home for a lot of you, because we’re digging into something real...
Your biggest expenses and whether they’re actually servingyour studio in the way you think they are.
Now, I’m not here to tell you to stop paying rent, sack yourteam, or ditch every extra program.
We need these things in some capacity to run a thriving studio.
But here’s the thing,
Then it might be time to audit your expenses and seewhere things need to shift.
Today’s episode is about systems that actually stick - even if you’ve tried before and fallen off, even if your studio feels more reactive than planned.
....And especially if you’re starting to resent how much it relies on you to hold it all together.
“How do I get my team to step up… without having to watchover their shoulder 24/7?”
If you’re feeling like your team isn’t quite getting it,or you’re constantly following up on things, or you can’t switch off because someone might drop the ball…
You’re not alone.
And here’s the good news: there’s a way to lead your teamwhere things don’t fall apart the second you step away.
Let me tell you about a studio owner I worked with a couple of years ago...
She had great programs, talented dancers, solid marketing, but every term she was scrambling for teachers, chasing enrolments, and constantly putting out fires with staff.
Her systems were okay. Her branding looked great.
But the culture?
That was the missing piece.
And I get it—because I’ve been there too.
And once I really nailed the culture inside my own studio, everything changed.
Term 2 is here - and while things may have settled a little after the break, let’s be honest… it never really slows down, does it?
You might still be getting a few late enquiries or trial bookings trickling in. The students are back in class - hopefully refreshed after a well-earned break - and let’s be real, the break was probably just as important for you and your teaching team too.
Depending on your calendar, you might be preparing for a mid-year performance, gearing up for exams, starting comp season, or knee-deep in costume orders already!
And while we can’t slow the studio down entirely, we can get better at how we manage it.
That’s what today’s episode is all about - how to stay on track with your goals, your plans, and your leadership even when everything around you feels urgent.
Now, I know some of you love planning. You’ve got your highlighters ready, your Google calendar open, and a fresh notebook just waiting to be filled. And then there are others of you who loathe it.
Planning can feel overwhelming, time-consuming, and let’s be honest - kind of pointless when things change every five minutes in studio life.
But here’s what I want to say to both camps - whether you’re a planner or a procrastinator, quarter planning doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, what I’m about to share with you might be the simplest framework you’ve ever tried. And the results?
They might just surprise you!
Let’s be honest - most studio owners didn’t start their business to be behind a computer all day.
You didn’t step into this role to be buried in admin, putting out fires, or running from one urgent task to the next. You started because you love teaching.
You love dance. You love mentoring and making an impact.
But as the business grows, that passion often gets buried under responsibility.
And I see it all the time.
Studio owners who are incredible educators, full of vision - but they’re stuck doing it all themselves, unsure how to step into a true leadership role without stepping away from the classroom.
That’s where AI comes in - not to replace you, but to support you.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re spinning plates and wondering when one’s going to crash, trust me—you’re not alone. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to do it all.
In 2025, I want to challenge you to do less but do it better.
Even after 30 years of running my studio, I’d still feel that familiar mix of excitement and nerves before a new dance year kicked off.
If you’re feeling a little on edge as you head into the new term, know this—it’s completely normal.
In fact, I’d say it’s a good thing. It means you care, you’re intentional, and you’re invested in creating something great. The key isn’t to let those nerves take over—it’s to harness that energy and turn it into confidence and momentum.
Protecting children isn’t about relying on one single thing —it’s about having many different layers of protection in place.
When parents bring their kids to your studio, they’re doing more than signing them up for dance lessons —they’retrusting you to keep them safe. That’s a big deal.
Now is the time to review your studio’s policies and ensure they’re up to standard.

Happy, happy New Year and welcome back to the DanceStudio Empire Podcast—I hope you’ve had, or are still enjoying, a well-deserved break. Whether you’re easing into 2025 or ready to hit the ground running, I’m so glad you’re here.
For those of you keen to start the year strong, I wanted tokick off with a topic that I believe will truly set apart thriving studios in 2025: Leadership.
It’s New Year’s Eve, and here we are, standing at the edgeof a brand-new year.
First, let me say thank you for tuning in on such a reflective and celebratory day.
Whether you’re preparing for a quiet evening, hosting friends and family, or just taking a moment to yourself before the clock strikes midnight, I’m so glad you’re here.
From the bottom of my heart, I truly wish you a beautifulChristmas; full of love, connection, and a little bit of magic.
And as we wrap up 2024, take a moment to ask yourself: How will I spend this final week of the year?
Merry Christmas…Happy holiday 🎄
As the year winds down, it’s natural to reflect on what’s worked and what hasn’t in your business.
If you’re here thinking, “I know I want more for my studio. I know something needs to change,” then this episode is for you.
Mindset is one of the most powerful tools in your business.
The way you think about challenges, opportunities, and even yourself can completely change the trajectory of your success.
In this episode, I’ve put together 10 mindset shifts that can help you start 2025 strong.
It’s so tempting to leave it all for “later.” But let’s behonest—if you don’t get some key things done now, they’ll sit in the back of your mind over the holidays, robbing you of the mental break you deserve before the new dance year kicks off.
So today’s episode is all about simplifying…as I continue topreach… and I’ve compiled a checklist of essential year-end tasks to help you focus your energy on what truly matters—tasks that will benefit your retention, team, and new enrolments for next year.
In this inspiring episode, I chat with Mike Harrison-Lamond, a powerhouse dance industry advocate and the Dance Arts Alliance Vice-Chair.
Mike shares his journey from studio owner to industry leader, where he’s part of a team spearheading change for a new award specifically for dance and performing arts education, and safeguarding its future.

Have you ever stopped to think about your own behaviour when you’re searching for something online or considering making a purchase?
It might seem unrelated, but it’s actually one of the best ways to reflect on the experience potential dance families are having when they come across your studio or are in search of a studio.
In this episode we going to break down the 9 most common reasons parents aren’t enrolling—and how you can fix them.
You can spend the next 2 months hoping that your students are going to re-enrol next year, OR, you can listen to this episode on the how, what, and when of the re-enrolment strategy that I implement every year.
This strategy has many benefits to continuing the growth of your dance studio empire...
As studio owners, we’re always balancing the need tomaintain consistency with the challenge of standing out in a crowded space.
We all know that there's not really anything "new" in marketing; often, it’s about looking at familiar ideas and putting a fresh spin on them.
My challenge for you today is to rethink and reframe how you present and communicate.
By tweaking a few things here and there, you can setyourself apart from what every other studio is doing and create an impression that resonates.
Many of you have likely been grappling with the decision to raise your fees and how to approach it in a way that aligns with both your business values and the needs of your families.
It’s a challenging topic, and I know it can feel personal, but it’s an essential conversation as we head into the new year.
The truth is, as studio owners, we need to ensure our businesses are sustainable. If we’re not covering costs or earning a modest profit, we risk not only our own livelihoods but also the stability of what our students and families depend on—the studio itself.
Join me as I share effective strategies for implementing price increases with ease and confidence.

Over the past five to ten years, the dance business landscape has seen an incredible transformation ...and even more recently with the exposure to AI and the likes of Chat GPT, Canva Magicand Gemini – just to name a few…
Where once studios might have operated as more of a passion project or a hobby, for many, the focus has now shifted firmly towards running them as full-fledged businesses…
By far, the biggest challenge I hear from studio owners time and time again is their lack of time and control over their finances.
It’s a constant struggle to balance all the things while trying to grow the business.
But here’s the thing—I’ve been working on a solution. It’s something I’ve been developing over the past fewmonths, and I believe it’s going to be a game-changer for the dance business industry.
All will be revealed in a couple of weeks.
The skills and tactics that got you to this point are not necessarily the ones that will propel you to the next level. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but recognising this is the first step toward achieving greater success.

At what point should you walk away?
When you’ve been running a studio for some time –it’s only human nature to have the feelings of the highest of highs and the lowest of lows…and I’m no exception.
There were multiple times during my 30 years when I was exhausted, felt defeated, didn’t want to hear from anotherparent, didn’t want to justify why I had to increase class prices or change the timetable, and didn’t want to have to look for a new teacher as one of my great ones was moving on…even the hard slog of coming back after covid…often questioning is all this worth it?
In this episode, I give you some questions to ask yourself to help clarify if you should keep going or consider moving on…
Less stress, less overwhelm, more time...
In this episode, I talk about a new way I’ve been managing my time. This is a concept I was taught by my business coach.
...And although I’m not running my studio anymore, you may be able to take what I do and make it work for you...
Growth is about getting bigger or adding more, while scaling is about optimising and streamlining, so being more strategic.
It's about refinement, profitability & sustainability and not just adding more all the time.
You are already busy and overworked, so how can you keep growing and not add to your workload? The answer is to scale.
In this episode, I tell you when, how, and what you need to do to get started.
I recently spoke at the Victorian Dance Festival as part of a Business Bootcamp panel.
We were asked to share what we believe to be the 1 secret to success...
Success means different things to each of us, and I believe many things contribute to making anyone successful - but as I made a list, I kept circling back to this one thing, which I shared on this episode of the podcast.
I hope you enjoy!

The number 1 mistake we, as studio owners, often make isunderestimating the power of our numbers. We see them as mere figures on a spreadsheet, not realising that they hold the secrets to our studio's success.
So, what shifted for me, and how did this realisation take me from 1 studio, 100 students and 1 teacher to '6 studios, over 1000 students and 30 teachers?

For many creatives, math & numbers are not always our strongestskill. (our talents just lie elsewhere)...
Now, of course, I am not speaking for everyone – but I stand here with complete transparency and tell you – I was that person, heck, I still use my fingers to count sometimes. The maths I did at school was called Maths in the beer garden if that’s any indication…however…As I began growing my studio, I knew I had to learn to understand at least some of the numbers in order to scale my studio.

Why in the world do I need an operations manual for my dancestudio?
Essentially, it's the roadmap or blueprint to running anefficient studio. Think of it as the encyclopedia of your business, where every little detail, from restocking the first aid kit to the ins and outs of class scheduling and marketing plans, is meticulously documented.
And why is this such a big deal? It's not just about makingyour life easier (though that's definitely a win); it's about creating a studio that can function seamlessly, no matter who's at the helm.

As we move closer towards the end of the year, it's always good to evaluate the year that has been...
This episode walks you through the process I do this time each year in order to set better goals for the following year.
I'm also running a LIVE training today at 12.30 pm where I will go through this process and how to use it to grow beyond 250 students.

Once you get to 250 students, the game changes.
When you have under 250 students, it's possible (although sometimes not desirable) to manage the array of things that are needed to run your studio.
In this episode, I talk about what you need to do once you get to that point in your studio.
I'm also running a LIVE training on this topic on Thursday 8th December 2022...you can register to join HERE
I talk a lot about foundations...
As boring and unsexy as they are, it's the foundations that enable you to grow your numbers, increase your revenue and steer your studio in the direction that you want.

This episode is a biggy...
This is the 4th part of the only 4 things you need to do to get your studio thriving.
Retention has MANY, MANY layers, but simply, you need to ensure the experience and journey for your students in one of your main focuses while running your studio.
I'm simplifying this concept in a way that will inspire you to take action and get your dance studio empire thriving.
Welcome to this week's episode of the Dance Studio Empire - Business Series.
This one is all about how to sign up new students, straight after their trial class.
Once you target the 'right' people for your studio and entice them to come for a trial, you need to sign them up!!
...and I'm going to tell you exactly how...
This week, I'm diving straight into why you need to entice your 'perfect' family to come and try out your classes.
It's part #2 of the Dance Studio Empire - Business Series.
By the end of this episode, if you're not already, you will be as confident as me that once you get the 'right' families through your studio door...
They will want to enrol!

Welcome to the 1st episode of the Dance Studio Empire - Business Series
Throughout this series, you will learn much about me and how I have built my own $1M studio empire.
In this episode, I will be doing a deep dive into the first of the ONLY 4 things you need to do to get your studio thriving.
It doesn't matter how big or small your studio is, or how long you've been running, these become your base thoughts for every action, decision and strategy you do within your studio...for-ev-er!
I was coaching one of my Studio by Design clients today. We talked about how she is sick of continually feeling behind and reacting in her business and is ready to start proactively running her studio again.
This prompted me to find my favourite checklist and share it with you all.
My goal is for you to work through the checklist to ensure you completely switch off during your Christmas Holiday break.
It's super important that you spend quality time with family and friends, and take time to rest and recharge while your business ticks over in the background.
Strategy, planning and action is the key!
So, start checking off that list today...
I thought I would change things up a little this week!
In this episode, I answer questions that have been sent to me by studio owners.
I figure, if one of you is asking, then surely there are others who may be wanting to know as well.

The Oxford Dictionary defines 'discipline as:
The practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behaviour...
This principle needs to be taken, adapted and implemented into your classroom!
In this podcast episode, I answer 3 of the most asked questions regarding discipline in the classroom.

In this episode, I talk about ways to communicate with potential families and clever ways to convert enquiries.
It can be as simple as the words, tone and actions you choose in each interaction as to how much of a connection you form...resulting in a new enrolment.

Your timetable is one of your biggest selling points for your families.
And, I appreciate how challenging timetabling can be each year, I highly suggest you take some time to consider ways to set out your timetable, so you can encourage the most number of enrolments as possible.
During this podcast, I'm going to talk about 7 things for you to consider when it comes time for you to plan your timetable for the new year.

You can spend the next 3 months hoping that your students are going to re-enrol next year, OR, you can listen to this episode on the how, what and when of the re-enrolment strategy that I implement every year.
There are so many benefits to this strategy to continuing the growth of your dance studio empire...
I created a playbook that you can follow along with during this episode. You can download it [HERE]
If you want me to work with you while planning out your strategy, you can book a 1:1 Clarity & Strategy session with me and we can work through it together.
It's very fitting that this episode drops today because it's the 1st of September, so our Re-enrolment Campaign/Strategy for the new year officially starts today.
In this episode, I discuss why you should consider doing this in your studio and the benefits for your parents.
I'm running a LIVE training in our FaceBook group (Dance Studio Empire) next week where I will go into great detail about exactly what I do, how I do it and when to get started...It's one not to miss!

During this episode, I talk about ways for you to identify, control and eliminate parents that don't compliment your studio or no longer spark joy :).

In this episode, I talk about 4 ways in which you can increase the value of the students you already have enrolled in your studio.
So much time and focus is spent on marketing to find 'new students' - which of course, is essential, but I want to talk you through a different way of using what you have to increase opportunity for your students as well as increase the value that one student gives you.
If you haven't yet downloaded the Student Value Calculator, you can get it here: https://danceteachercentral.newzenler.com/f/calculator
Type in your numbers and the document will auto calculate for you.
The Student Value Calculator is one of the most effective tools I use for studio growth and expansion.
Not many studio owners are aware of the benefits of knowing the value of one student for the year.
Some of these are:
Allows you to identify areas to increase revenue
Gives you an overview when talking to new families on where to encourage participation upon enrolment
Helpful for you when you are having a hard day or you don't want to respond to the email or return the phone call, just to see exactly how much value that one student will add to your studio if they do enrol!

We don't know what we can achieve and where our journey as studio owners will take us, but one thing I CAN give you, are some ways to ensure the journey goes in the direction you want.

Last week I attended the Simply Business Summit in Palm Cove, Queensland.
The most exciting thing was I got to catch up with my business bestie, Claire O'Shea (IRL) who I haven't seen in over 3yrs!
We spent time together (once the summit had finished) strategising, planning, laughing and sharing a few glasses of wine, which completely filled my soul.
We also spend an afternoon recording a few episodes for (both) our podcasts...and here is the first one!
In this episode, we chat about our takeaways from the summit, the excitement of networking, and meeting other like-minded women in business...

It still amazes me the number of studio owners who feel guilt, shame or not worthy of earning, not only a wage but a decent wage from running your studio.
This is your job....you should be paying yourself a wage!
In this episode, I talk about the 7 things you should say to yourself (out loud or inside your head) if you start to feel guilt, shame or not worthy, things to try if you struggle to get fees paid on time and why you need to re-assess your payment options for your families.
If you've listened to the previous 2 episodes, you know the who, how, when and where for your teacher training.
It is now about executing your training and managing your teachers effectively...
And that is what this episode is all about.
If you haven't already, go back and listen to episodes #7 and #8 and you can piece it all together.
When it comes to planning, creating and executing teacher training, I truly believe a lot of studio owners are simply unsure where to start or want to 'upgrade' what they are currently doing and aren't sure how.
In this episode (2 of the 3-part series) I talk about a quick and easy way to create your teacher training plan in 7 simple steps.

I believe most studio owners know the importance and benefits of training their teachers, but there are still a few who have not given it much thought...and this is why I originally put this training together!
Over the next 3 episodes, I will take you through a 3-step process of planning, creating, and successfully delivering training to your team and ensuring that your team aligns with, and compliments your studio to continue its growth and success.
Phase 1:
Whether you are unsure where to start or want to tweak what you are currently doing, these episodes will give you what you need to get it done!

Whether you want to grow your studio, solidify where you are currently, or, consciously consolidate, it should be done in a way that aligns with your vision, values and life!
In this episode, I ask you to answer 5 questions and your answers should be the foundations of your 'dance business blueprint'.
In this episode, I talk about 14 Ways To Reclaim Your Sanity After Your Concert/Recital/Show.
My intention with this episode is, of course, to provide you with valuable tips and powerful information, however, I also hope this one makes you smile - even just a little bit!

[Short daily boosts of inspiration & motivation that will get you thinking & inspired to help grow your dance studio empire]
Doing a mid-year concert was one of the most positive and lucrative things I ever introduced in my studio. There are so many benefits for you as the studio owner and for your dancers, parents, and your studio's growth. In this episode, I talk to you about the differences between our mid-year and end of year concerts, the benefits and how I use them for marketing and studio growth. If you have any questions or would like to chat 1:1 with me about how you could introduce a mid-year concert into your studio, you can book using this link: https://bit.ly/3uuKYbl
As studio owners, teachers, choreographers, artistic designers (etc...and the list goes on), we are emotionally driven.
We put our heart and soul into every single decision we make when it comes to our students, families & staff...and as a result of this, it makes us emotionally vulnerable to creativity exhaustion, creative blocks, overwhelm & stress!
During this episode, I talk about 7 strategies and practical tips you can try when you next get to the point of creativity exhaustion...
Probably the most asked question I get from studio owners is, 'How can I increase my student numbers?' or, 'How can I get more enrolments in my studio?'.
The answer is...well...there isn't just 1 way to achieve this! The answer is multi-layered - and (I'm happy to say) many of my podcast episodes have an underlying current that helps you with this very thing...
During this episode, I talk about 5 things for you to consider, to not only find more students but have them enrol and stay for years!
I hope you take away some great bits of information and implement them straight into your business.

In this episode, I take you back to how I started my studio and grew it from scratch.
Funny enough, the things I did then, are still the things I do today!
