This week we have been running one of our crew awareness weeks, this time our focus on anger management. Anger is an emotion that can affect us all at some point in our lives and is perfectly normal, but when it is expressed in a harmful or aggressive way, it can become problematic, especially when working in a close environment.

It's important that we understand the reasons for our anger and learn how to manage it, and to help us understand how we do this, we are really thrilled to welcome back Counselling Psychologist Gary Napier for this episode. In our chat, we explore the nature of anger, identify common triggers, and discuss effective strategies for managing our emotions.

Counsellor Gary Napier speaks with Life Coach Roland Pakkiri, about how he felt as a first-time father 7 years ago when his daughter was born. With the long-awaited excitement of a new baby, what began as a happy occasion soon turned into a great deal of tension during the early days of parenthood.

Roland speaks honestly about the pressures men feel during this time and how if left unspoken it can cause a rift between the couple and even a breakdown in the relationship.

Whilst everyone knows that newborn babies are hard work with the lack of sleep and the constant change of nappies, little is spoken about the strain it puts on the couple, especially when they are first-time parents.

Roland's wisdom is very profound and should be shared with anyone who is expecting a baby. Perhaps if more men spoke with each other, some relationships could be saved.

In this episode, counsellor and therapist, Gary Napier talks with Charlie Payten, who at only 22 years old, has a rather dramatic journey into self-discovery.

Charlie sometimes struggled at school with her peers and quickly realised that it is better to have fewer friendships that were deeper, rather than being popular. She made a bold decision during her travels in Asia, that she would only make 'ride or die' friendships and not settle for the shallow relationships we sometimes make to fit in.

Her maturity and wisdom at such a young age are refreshing and encouraging, to not only her counterparts but a wider community. Hear her unique story of how she rejected the 'right of passage' to find a more meaningful life.

Gary talks to Griff Akai about growing up in a family that didn't necessarily express love in the way western culture portrays parental affection. The world will tell us who we are if we don't find it out for ourselves.  We are told by society, that men need to 'man up'  or be tough when things are hard. We are told that it is weak to be vulnerable or to speak to someone when we are facing issues.

Finding out our true identity can really set us free because we no longer need to conform to what others say about us.

This Movember, we are encouraging men to talk to each other. We can all help one another and you may not realise what someone else is going through until you open up yourself.

Movember is a campaign that brings awareness about men's health.  Males are less likely to get checkups at the doctors, which can lead to health issues later on.  This Movember, The Gap Counselling is doing short videos to encourage men to keep on top of their health.  There is still a stigma attached to men who battle with their health and feel it is weak to ask for help.

In this video, Thomas speaks about the fact that it is OK to speak to someone you trust.

Gary speaks to Karen a cancer survivor who, after 5 years of living cancer free, has a remarkable story to tell.  Her extraordinary strength and determined attitude pushed Karen through some of the most intensive treatments on her journey to healing.  She was not going to let cancer win but would come out victorious.

Although she came face to face with her enemy and beat it, that was just the beginning of the fight.  Karen talks openly about the real battle that she was left with which was arguably equal to the disease itself.

Gary interviews Maia a 16-year-old who brings insight and great awareness of the battles that teenagers face.  When at school, she recalls the strong desire to fit in but feels the need to change so that she can be accepted by her friends.  She later discovers that this is not the best policy, since she becomes a version of herself that she did not like.  In her self-discovery journey,  she finds out that not everyone is going to like her and that learns that being authentic is the only way forward.

We are privileged to hear such a story from a young person who has promised to love and protect herself, just as much as she does for others.   Her courage to speak up and highlight her flaws in order to find her own identity is nothing short of heroic.

Matt has worked in the sailing business for over 16 years. The yachting industry is often displayed as being glamourous; working with millionaires, traveling the world, and having a 'carefree' lifestyle.  In this podcast, Matt shares the other side of the coin, where 18-hour days are not uncommon, working alongside a crew in confined spaces for months on end and having to cope with high demands from boat owners.  All of these pressures inevitably affect people's mental health, with stories of drinking as a coping mechanism and the onset of depression, anxiety, and fatigue regularly hitting staff.  Whilst the rewards are incredibly high, with excellent salaries and exciting venues; Matt explains that the role can be a bit like being given 'golden handcuffs', where you cannot leave because the benefits drastically outweigh the cost.

Matt is a big advocate of men needing to talk, believing that if stress and pressure are not spoken about and left to fester, the outcome is imminent - illness and even death. So, men we need to talk!

This week, Gary Napier speaks with Maria Berghs, a lecturer at De Montfort University,  Leicester.  She currently works with Masters students and has gained great insight into how the stresses and worries of today are effecting our young people.

Maria explains how she has personally had to deal with students that have suffered sexual abuse and rape, and highlights how, even now in the 21st century, the onus is still on girls and women to make sure they are safe in social situations.  She discusses the sexualisation of society, where pornography is readily available at the touch of a button, and how it distorts the way men and women relate to each other.

Maria's parents were foundational in her upbringing and that the messages of love, helped her stay grounded throughout life.  Maria gives great practical and emotional advice, which will really speak to anyone who has suffered from sexual abuse and feelings of loss or loneliness.

Covid-19 has not only disrupted our living experience, but has placed one big magnifying glass onto our relationships. Many couples have found during the lockdown, an intensifying pressure, being forced to stay in and learning to find ways of getting along together. Whereas even couples who considered their relationship status as good, have now found themselves questioning whether they should stay together. So, if a relationship needs to end, how can we get it right?

Counsellor Gary Napier, speaks openly with Carel Mouton, a Clinical Social Worker and Gestalt Therapist. Carel's extensive wisdom and therapeutic experience of over 30 years, has enabled us to see the process of what happens to a person, after the breakdown of a relationship and how we can have hope to start again. He speaks specifically about the 5 stages of grief that occur during loss, which are:

  1. Denial - avoidance, confusion, elation, shock, fear
  2. Anger - frustration, irritation, anxiety
  3. Bargaining - struggling to find meaning, reaching out to others, telling one's story
  4. Depression - overwhelmed, helplessness, hostility, flight
  5. Acceptance - exploring new options, new plan in place, moving on

During the podcast, Gary and Nick discuss the pain that surrounds a break up and why we are often attracted to people who are the opposite to us. They also consider the different needs  between men and women, which also can add to the tension in a couple relationship.
