“Lead Us” Assumes We’re Following
Mark 1:12-13 “At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’ At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan.”
The Greek word for “temptation” is peirasmos. It actually refers to a “trial,” an “affliction” or to a “proving/test.” It becomes a temptation when the trial involves the potential of sinning, but the word does not refer to an attempt to intentionally make someone sin!
James 1:13 “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone…”
Exodus 17:7 “And he called the name of the place Massah (peirasmos) and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested (peirazein) the LORD by saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”
The Greek word for “deliver” means to “rescue,” “save,” “guard,” “snatch,” or “free” in general.
Questions for the Road:
1) Why do you think Jesus teaches us to pray collectively? (OUR Father…, Give US this day…, Forgive US…, As WE forgive…, Lead US not…, Deliver US…)

3) How does understanding the context of the Israelites’ testing in the wilderness help you understand this portion of the prayer in Matthew 6:13?
4) How can you apply this passage to your own life?

Return to Him and confess those things. Ask Him for forgiveness. 3. How will you let, we are one bread, one body; change how you relate to the people in your church family? Call someone, share a meal, or go for coffee together.

This first phrase of the Lord’s Prayer is crucial for understanding our relationship to God and the basis on which we pray to him. We are adopted into God’s family not because of our good works, but solely because of the righteousness and faithfulness of Christ Jesus. Because God is our Father, we can have ultimate confidence when we ask God anything in the name of Jesus.
