  1. Be open and receptive
  2. Intentionally put yourself in spaces that inspire you

  • Where the myth of "writing is hard" comes from?

  • Who benefits (and who doesn't) by perpetuating this myth?

In 2008, I co-authored an article in the English Journal called "The Five-Paragraph Essay and the Deficit Model of Education." I have not let up since on my mission to eradicate this "form" of writing so often used in schools. In today's episode I dive into:

  1. What the 5-paragraph essay is

  2. Why schools use it

  3. The issues with it and why it actually doesn't help young writers

  4. How it may be impacting your book writing (or any writing) as an adult

I know you are in the business of helping people get huge transformations in their lives. Most of the people I work with deliver that transformation in a book, but they also have programs, courses, and other offerings as well.

What if you could find a way to put it all together and give people just a little taste, a little win to get started? This is where the idea of a micro-course and mini-book comes in. In today's episode, I'm going to break down the 3 steps you need to begin crafting the blueprint to launch your legacy through a resource and a course.

Recently one of my clients had a big aha! She realized that her job was not to figure out all the different parts of her book right now when she is just starting out on her book writing journey. What a relief?!

We discovered that when she just gets embodied and connected to herself, then words feel like they just "spew" out of her. So, we came up with the goal of just "embody and spew."

In today's episode, I'll share exactly what my client and I discovered and how to activate this in your writing.

There is a stigma around what writing is supposed to look like. What is the image that shows up for you? Do you picture someone at a typewriter or computer? Do you picture a lovely journal and fancy pen?

Often we envision black words on the white page as the only way writing can show up. In today's episode, I share the concept of verbal writing or writing out loud.

Many of my clients are verbal processors, meaning they think best when talking about their thoughts, me asking questions, and them responding. In today's episode, I'll share what writing "out loud" can look like!

There are some really cool writing support tools out in the world. One type I see often are websites and apps that auto-generate writing for you. In this week’s episode, I get curious about whether this kind of tool is a friend or foe in your writing journey.

Here is a sneak peak at some of the core ideas I share:

  • You might not actually need these tools
  • It promotes a “should” mentality and often comes from “lack”
  • Might cause you to bypass the powerful work of getting connected to core messages
  • Your audience can tell when the words are not genuinely yours
  • If you do use these, when and how to use them effectively

Ultimately, you have to decide what’s best for you, but I think you’ll learn my view by the end of the episode.

I get a LOT of ads about professing claims like…“I wrote my book in a weekend and now I want to share my simple template for you to do the same!” OR “My clients write their books in 36.2 hours on average and you can do the same.”

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of feeling like I have to speed through everything. Bigger, faster, harder is not always the best thing. For writing, it’s often what pushes people away from writing and sharing their writing with others. So, in this week’s episode, I share the well-known Navy Seal slogan, “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast,” and explain how this approach is an alternative to the write as fast as possible plans. I share how the pressure to write quickly:

  • Doesn't always result in the best writing
  • Doesn’t fit most heart-centered, mission-driven folks
  • Often encourages bypassing the very healing parts of writing

“Is it good?”...“Just tell me what to fix.” These are often the ways we’ve learned to ask for feedback on our writing. Yet, neither of these requests are very helpful when writing your book.

In this week’s episode, I break down 4 powerful types of writing feedback to ask based on the stage of writing you are in and your writing needs:

  1. No response or just “thank you”
  2. Pointing or center of gravity
  3. Summary and sayback
  4. What was almost said and what I wanted to hear more about

Listen as I break down all of these response types, which I have adapted over the years from Peter Elbow and Pat Belanoff’s awesome composition book, Being A Writer. Shout out also to my dear friend and former colleague, Dr. Jennifer Buckner, for creating the awesome PDF that gave me a condensed version of what Elbow and Belanoff created in their book. I talk from this PDF in this episode (message me if you’d like a copy!).

When we are writing, we are often sharing things we’ve said before or written before. We are writing things we teach over and over. We write stories and experiences that we’ve shared before.

Then, when we go to revise and edit our words, it can be difficult to really “see” whether our words are landing and coming across as we want.

Why? Because at this point, we’ve read and reread these words so many times that our brains actually fill in any gaps, even see and read things that aren’t actually on the page.

Crazy, right? So, in this week’s episode, I share a little bit about why this happens and how to take an idea from qualitative research methods and data collection to help us make these words that are so close to us seem strange and new. Why? Because it gives us the distance we need to revise like a champ!

Do you struggle with time management? How about managing your time to write your book?

Today’s special guest is Richie Norton, award-winning author and serial entrepreneur, whose latest book Anti-Time Management: Reclaim Your Time and Revolutionize Your Results With the Power of Time Tipping will give you a whole new perspective on (un)managing your time.

After losing his son and brother-in-law, Richie and his amazing wife Natalie decided to stop waiting to get to a certain place in life in order to begin living their values. Developing the idea of Gavin’s law (named after his late son), Richie embodied the motto: "Live to start. Start to live."

He shares this concept and so many more from his book in today’s powerful episode:

  • How to own your time
  • How to make time work for you
  • How to do what you want when you want

As the CEO and Cofounder of PROUDUCT—an INC. 5000 company—a global entrepreneurship solution helping businesses go from idea to market with full-service sourcing, product strategy, and end-to-end supply chain, Richie has dedicated his life to prioritizing his family and helping people become self-reliant by creating their empowering products, businesses, and more.

Plus, Richie dishes the dirt on how he wrote Anti-Time Management, and how doing so created a “magical magnet” for his life and work in ways he could never expect! Grab your copy of Richie’s book on Amazon or wherever books are sold. Follow him on Instagram @richie_norton and subscribe to his podcast, The Richie Norton Show

Many of us think our writing needs to take readers somewhere, and needs to help them think or feel a certain way.

In this episode of The Written Compass, I share how this thinking can easily keep you stuck and not writing... the very opposite of your book writing goals! I provide you with some tips and tricks for shifting this mindset from "needing to know the answers" to "being open to what the words want to share." And, I talk about the relationship between your words and the readers' experience with them.

Whatever your views and relationship with punctuation, this episode is going to give you a new perspective! I love to think of punctuation as a road map for your readers. In this episode, I share...

  2. Myths and truths about them

  3. Aligned ways to connect with and grow your audience and share your book

I started this podcast to create a space for inspiration, education, and activation of powerful new narratives in the world of business and life from heart-centered folks just like you. Given the most recent acts of racially motivated violence on May 14, I see the importance of sharing one's voice now more than ever.

In this episode, I share what I’m doing to use writing to reflect on and create the change I hope to see. I also invite others to explore their voices, and their messages… because we are a species that connects through stories. I believe that on a micro-level if we can continue to share our stories–even the ones, the thoughts the beliefs we aren’t proud of but show up for us–when we hear and connect with another human’s story, heart to heart, and we don’t just continue hearing the pale, male, stale stories of one part of the population and no longer create systems and policies that uphold that ONE lived experience, tides shift. We change.

I hope this podcast is viewed as an invitation…whatever that may mean for you.

What do I write about?

I used to get this question every time I introduced a new writing assignment to my undergraduate and graduate students.

And, I always did the same thing–I paused, looked them square in the eyes, and asked with love “What do you WANT to write about?”

In this episode, I share how we are never really out of ideas when we connect to ourselves and our core messages. I also share some easy places in your business and life to find idea gold:

  • Your favorite emails
  • Your non-promotional social media posts
  • Your program content
  • Your conversations

I also offer a quick guided closed-eye embodiment moment to get you connected to yourself and your words so you can get writing!

We’ve all heard the phrase stop “shoulding” on yourself. Ya know, it’s the idea that we need to check in with and let go of the “shoulds” we might be following.

As a biz owner this might show up as “I should be posting 3 times per day. I should email my list 2 times per week. I should have 100 people sign up for my free offer in order to enroll 4 people in my paid offer.” and so on

Often these shoulds have good intentions, right? They aren’t meant to cause us harm or stress us out, but they do. Especially when it comes to writing. And that’s what I want to focus on today: the shoulds of writing or what I call performative writing vs what I support others in which is embodied writing.

Be sure to leave a review on this one, share it on Instagram and tag me @shanahartman_, and let me know what you think! I can't wait to hear from you! If you are ready to embody your words, I want you to hop on a call with my team to discuss how we can support you in doing just that! In this episode, I am joined by two of the writing coaches who serve our clients in our "This is the Year I Write My Book" program: Drs. Jeanie Reynolds and Cindy Urbanski. We have been talking and writing about writing for over a decade together, and we are excited to share a topic that recently got us riled up: canned writing.

Canned writing, or template writing, is not new. Many a writing teacher or coach has had good intentions by offering fill-in-the-blank guides and templates in an attempt to make writing easier. However, as we discuss in this episode, our experience is that this kind of thinking actually silences our writing voices instead of lifting them up. Be sure to leave a review on this one, share it on Instagram, and tag me @shanahartman_, as I'm sure you will have lots to say!

You've heard me talk before about how there's not one business owner that I know who does not write in some way, shape, or form. Recently I was reminded of this when I met an amazing business strategist, and she was delivering a workshop that had a beautiful workbook that accompanied the workshop. This workbook was 20-30 pages long. It was beautiful, it was well-formatted, and it had some great tools in it. I quickly realized that she could turn that workbook into a book! So, in today's episode of The Written Compass, I want to talk about how you can turn anything from your business into a book.

The key to doing so is understanding each of the following in the current form/genre of your writing and figuring out what this looks like for a book:

  1. Your approach as a writer

  2. Your audience

  3. Your purpose

I'm excited to share, so grab a notebook and dive in.

We are fully into spring here in North Carolina, and what I share in today's episode very much mimics the weather we are experiencing... some days are hot and some are cold, then others are windy, and then there's the rain! It's all over the place. This "all over the place" feeling is often how we view our writing and we often think that we need to have our process, our ideas, our organization, etc. all straight and clear in order to create good writing.

In today's episode of The Written Compass, I want to talk about the power of getting to know and honoring YOUR process. I share examples from some of my clients, so you see how different processes can all lead to the same goal--a published book aligned with your amazing work.

In this episode, I want to share a slightly unusual strategy for helping you keep your book-writing vibes going. And, it's not what you think.

Many of the heart-centered biz owners I work with have never written a book before, or if they have done so, it was done from pushing and grinding the words out.
