Whether you know it or not, your school has its own ecosystem. The way you run your classes, how you schedule your events, how the school looks, smells, sounds. Everything about your school is attributed to its ecosystem. The environment of your school, how a new client feels when they are on the phone with your staff, what they see when they come in for the first time. While this is likely not something you set up purposefully, it is something you can change with purpose.
First and foremost the list of games that follow is not exhaustive, they are also not unique to your school or mine. I simply want to give you some options to try. I would recommend that even if you don't think they would be fun or exciting for your students, give them a try at least once to see how they fit your school.
Have a list of both free and paid events and from that list, schedule events ideally once per month. Doing this will keep your students engaged in your program. Some examples of events would be:
In our pursuit of becoming a better teacher and leader to our students we need to understand what it means to be a better student. Just because we are a teacher or leader does not mean we are not still students. We need to do our best to remember what it is like to be a great student and try our best to foster those skills in our students.
Prevent burnout in both our students as well as our instructors is key to maintaining effective and efficient classes. This can be easily managed by your class schedule and your schools atmosphere.

Last week we took a look at the things you can directly do to teach a great class. I hope you took the time to build your own checklist. Now let’s look at some of the results of teaching a great class. Those will be the byproducts of how you are teaching your classes. These byproducts really need to be the metrics you gauge your classes success on.
If I had to distill a great class into a check list it would have 4 major points. I believe if you can check off each of these items you will be teaching great classes. Your list will likely be different than mine. But what follows is a list of must haves for me to teach a great class. During each of the classes I teach I like to accomplish these 4 things.
Note taking is a simple idea, when you are learning new information, often it comes at a rate that you can not really comprehend or understand everything. So you take notes on some of that new information, so you can review it later, with the hope that it will allow you to better understand that information. Easy enough, right?
In this episode we go over some ideas of what your ideal student may look like. What can we as instructors do to create the ideal martial arts students. That is our job, right? What type of qualities would your ideal student possess?
Reteaching is not fun for us the instructors, or the students. From time to time, and for a multitude of reasons, you will need to reteach information to your students. The reason this is particularly tough is because you will likely be frustrated. You have already taught this information to the students, who did not practice. Your students will be difficult because they think they already know this information. This makes them feel as if they can go through the information at light speed, and we know that is not the case.
Setting specific learning targets for your students will set them up for success by giving them a specific takeaways from your classes.
Getting your students to feel excited about your classes will aid in their learning ability. This is because if they are genuinely interested in what you are teaching they will be more apt to retain the information.
Teaching while you are teaching can be huge to your current a future teaching team. With this concept you will be stating to the class why you are making the corrections and choices you are making. As you can imagine if you can accomplish the tactic well then you will be greatly helping the future of your program.
The difference between a good instructor and a great instructor is the details they can see, and how direct the feedback they can give. We have all seen a student perform a move that is not quite right, but not be entirely sure what exactly is wrong with the move. The difference between a good instructor and a great instructor is being able to correctly identify the root cause of the problem and communicate the solution. Today we are going to be discussing the levels of instructor feedback.

Did they find your school easily? Does your staff know what to do to get them on the training floor? How long has it been since they contacted you before they can come in to do their first class? What type of information do they need to know for their next class? Did you tell them how to sign in for the class to track their attendance? Does your teaching team know they are a trial student or how they should help them?
Goal setting needs to be an integral part of how you run your program. Having monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals is a great idea. Not only for you as the owner but also for your students. In this episode we go over some key tactics we use for setting those goals.Â
Private lessons are one on one lessons. This is a great way to catch students up if they are behind, or offer extra one on one attention. Having a defined system in place for you and your team to follow can greatly benefit your students.
The primary way we share our information with our students is by demonstrating. Therefore, we need to do the best we can to deliver the information in a way that each student can see, hear and understand what we are doing.
