In Paris, isolated Eastern European émigré Trelkovsky (Roman Polanski) rents an apartment in a spooky old building whose inhabitants regard him with suspicion and even outright hostility. When he learns that the apartment's previous tenant, a beautiful woman, tried to commit suicide by jumping out the window, Trelkovsky begins to identify with her in increasingly disturbing ways. The equation has never been more accurate than in the brilliant Czech surrealist's newest film, "Little Otik," based upon a classic fairy tale of an infertile couple who adopt a tree stump as their baby. In 1962, a Haitian man is buried alive by white colonists, only to be brought back as an undead zombi slave. 55 years later, a teenage girl Fanny makes friends with Mélissa, who moved from Haiti to France after the 2010 Haiti earthquake. After it is revealed that Mélissa's family is associated with voodoo culture, Fanny convinces Mélissa's aunt Katy (a mambo) to perform a ritual in order to cure Fanny's heartbreak over a recent breakup. The ritual goes awry, however, leaving Fanny possessed by Baron Samedi himself.

In deep space, the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo is awakened from their cryo-sleep capsules halfway through their journey home to investigate a distress call from an alien vessel. When a strange edible substance appears on a remote island, local farmer Mr. Skinner (John McLiam) and his wife (Ida Lupino) deem it a blessing and feed it to their farm animals. Soon other wildlife such as rodents and insects have eaten the food, which makes anything that consumes it grow in size. These gigantic beasts start terrorizing the island, with an athlete named Morgan (Marjoe Gortner) among those who are fighting for their lives against the gargantuan creatures.

When scientist Andre Delambre (Al Hedison) tests his matter transporter on himself, an errant housefly makes its way into the transportation chamber, and things go horribly wrong. As a result, Delambre's head and arm are now that of the insect. Slowly losing himself to the fly, Delambre turns to his wife, Helene (Patricia Owens), for help. But when tragedy strikes, Delambre's brother (Vincent Price) and Inspector Charas (Herbert Marshall) are forced to pick up the investigation.

When scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) completes his teleportation device, he decides to test its abilities on himself. Unbeknownst to him, a housefly slips in during the process, leading to a merger of man and insect. As for Dracula: Young barrister Jonathan Harker is assigned to a mysterious village to finalize a land deal where a former barrister had been assigned to and gone mad. Pining for centuries over his lost love, Dracula believes she's been reincarnated as Harker's fiancée and travels to London to find her. To do this, he imprisons Harker in his castle to be fed upon by other vampires. Once he is in London, Dracula begins a reign of seduction and terror, draining the life of Mina's closest friend, Lucy whilst attempting to entice Mina. Harker eventually breaks free and joins Lucy's friends in their effort to drive Dracula away.

The Witch, is a period drama/horror film by first-time writer/director Robert Eggers, that describes itself as "a New England folktale.” The film follows a family in 1630s New England that is torn apart by the forces of paranoia, witchcraft, black magic, and possession. Banished from their pilgrim colony, a self-righteous father, William, and his Puritan family attempt to create their own homestead beyond the world they knew and on the outskirts of a dark forest. As the struggling family tries to survive, their infant child vanishes into thin air, and ominous tragedies fall upon this supposed God-fearing family. Possession:
After Anna reveals to her husband, Mark, that she is having an affair, she leaves him and their son. Mark is devastated and seeks out Heinrich, the man who cuckolded him, only to receive a beating. After a series of violent confrontations between Mark and Anna, Mark hires a private investigator to follow her. Anna descends into madness, and it's soon clear that she is hiding a much bigger secret -- one that is both inexplicable and shocking.

The film turns into a bloodbath where the masked killer haunts the town and stalks Sidney Prescott. Her boyfriend Billy Loomis becomes the main suspect along with Sidney's father. Local Tabloid News Reporter Gail Weathers and Woodsbroro's Deputy Dwight "Dewey" Riley investigate and try to figure out who the killer is and if it's the same person who killed Sid's mom the year before.

In today’s episode, Dmitry and Mallory discuss Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is about a serial killer named Henry who is released from prison following his mother's murder. He supplements his job as an exterminator with a series of indiscriminate and violent murders. Fellow jailbird and drug dealer Otis becomes a willing accomplice in Henry's bloody killings. But as the depravity escalates and Henry forms a bond with Otis' sister, Becky, things start to get out of hand. The film is based on the true-life story of serial killer Henry Lee Lucas.
It stars Michael Rooker and was directed by John McNaughton.

In this episode, Dmitry and Mallory discuss the movie Run. It takes them almost 30 minutes to get around to actually talking about the film and the episode ends as awkwardly as the film does.
Run is a 2020 American psychological thriller film starring Sarah Paulson as a twisted mother with dark secrets. It's a Hulu original that gives off similar vibes that other streaming service films do which springs them into a conversation on how social media plays a major effect in hyping these movies. Mallory finds that Sarah Paulson made it worth watching and Dmitry watched it because Mallory asked him to. In the film, Sarah Paulson's character is a mother who has totally controlled her daughter since birth, but now as a teenager, her daughter starts to explore her mother's secrets. There's not much more to it.

The Thing
The Thing is a 1982 John Carpenter cult classic. In it we follow a group of American research scientists in Antarctica that are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot and the camp doctor lead the camp crew in a desperate, gory battle against the vicious creature before it picks them all off, one by one.

In this episode, Dmitry and I discuss the 1992 version of Candyman with the new 2021 version. We get into gentrification, white savior films, and what really drives urban legends. As per usual, we also go into a weird amount of tangents but somehow manage to stay most focused on the films.
As Chicagoans, these movies meant a lot more to us. Both films are centered around the housing project, Cabrini-Green. the 1992 film is centered around a white female grad student, named Helen, writing a thesis on urban legends. She stumbles upon the story of Candyman and things go literally off the hook from there. She visits the projects and begins to understand the racially charged story behind Candyman. In this process, she slowly summons him herself and finds out the real terror a white person can bring down on a black community in crisis. Gaslit and possessed, she eventually gives into Candyman but not without rescuing a baby from him. A baby that everyone believed that she stole and intended to kill.
Flash forward to the 2021 film. This slasher film is less about the wild kills and more of a commentary on the dangers of gentrification. We see that the projects have been demolished and cheap condos have taken their place. Artists and yuppies have taken over the neighborhood and the legend of Candyman has been replaced with the legend of Helen and the baby she stole. The story is easily accessed on the internet and all accounts lead to the conclusion that a white woman lost her mind while visiting the projects and went on a killing spree. An artist named Anthony McCoy hears of this story and believes that it's the perfect subject for his next art project. While doing research, he visits the row homes that still stand and gathers any information that could be useful for his art project. It's only then that he learns how central to the Candyman legend he is...

Initially reserved with each other, they slowly form a close bond, but it soon becomes apparent that she is no ordinary young girl. Eventually, she shares her dark, macabre secret with him, revealing her connection to a string of bloody local murders.

It Follows is about a teenage girl named, Jay, who goes on a date with a guy she hardly knows. They have sex, after which he informs her that there is a shape-shifting entity that started following him after he had a one-night stand. Now that they had sex it will follow her. She doesn't believe it first until she begins to see beings slowly following her. Sometimes they're strangers and other times they're people she knows. Jay tells her friends and they soon witness the malevolent intentions of the sinister being as they team up to do everything they can think of to stop it.

In this episode, Dmitry and I discuss the horror film, Habit. Habit is a 1997 vampire horror film starring Larry Fessenden, who also wrote and directed the film. The main character, Sam, is a self-destructive, vaguely artistic New York bohemian who has recently lost his father and his long-time girlfriend. At a Halloween party, he meets a mysterious, beautiful, androgynous woman named Anna. He embarks on a kinky, sex-charged relationship with her; but soon he suffers from a mysterious illness, and eventually comes to believe that Anna is a vampire.

In this episode, we discuss David Cronenberg's film Dead Ringers. It follows Elliot, a successful gynecologist, works at the same practice as his identical twin, Beverly. Elliot is attracted to many of his patients and has affairs with them. When he inevitably loses interest, he will give the woman over to Beverly, the meeker of the two, without the woman knowing the difference. Beverly falls hard for one of the patients, but when she inadvertently deceives him, he slips into a state of madness.

The Exorcist is a 1973 American supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin and produced and written for the screen by William Peter Blatty, based on the 1971 novel of the same name by Blatty. It follows the demonic possession of twelve-year-old Regan and her mother's attempt to rescue her through an exorcism conducted by two Catholic priests.
