Fleshly desire is a breeding ground for temptation, which leads to sin, which leads to death. Cut it off at the pass and delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. We take a look at Jesus being tempted in the wilderness and how we can apply to our lives what He did to thwart temptation.
Pastor Andrew Clark from Bayview Church joins us today and encourages us to come humbly to Jesus with nothing to bring and allow Him to start a new work in us. John the Baptist called for repentence, and it's the same repentence we are called to today.

It's the end of the book of Nehemiah. Surely they all lived happily ever after right? Wrong. Scripture repeatedly tells us of our failure and Gods steadfast love, mercy and grace. Chapter 13 is no different and it points to a need for a Savior.

Chapters 11 and 12 show off Nehemiahs organizational skills. Boring? Hardly. What ensues is a processional worship service for the ages. It starts with going where God calls, then doing what God calls, and then giving Him all the glory.
Is unbusy a word? It is now...and we discuss, among other things, how Brian keeps a loose schedule with a full-time job and a wife, and 4 kids.
The temple is rebuilt, the walls are rebuilt, and now the people of Judah turn their attention to their hearts once again. Upon hearing the scriptures read, they get introspective, and change their lives.

Nehemiah shows what a godly leader does when faced with social injustce. Guided by prayer and knowing scriptures, Nehemiah's example is something we can follow, even through difficult opposition.
What's your take on stuffing? More importantly, are you doing what God's calling you to do, or just whatever you feel like?
Opposition is going to hit us in life. We can learn from Nehemiah how to respond when we face opposition.
What does it look like to actually get involved? How would our world change? How would we change? We wouldn't just be surviving anymore, we'd be thriving and in God's will for our lives.
Before God begins a work ABOUT something, he begins a work IN someone. Nehemiah, a man with a cushy job in the palace of Persia, answered the call because of a longing in his heart for a place he'd never been.

The guy in whom the book is named finally bursts onto the scene. Unfortunately Ezra finds a people of God far from God. A calling from God brings the man of God to recapture the hearts of the people far from God. Thankfully God is still doing the same thing today.
It's not a time issue, it's a priority issue. Once again we're on the topic of the rhythms of your life. Seems to be a continuing trend.
Distress. Disappointment. Disinterest. Disregard. This is the regression that happens to Israel, and also us. It takes a couple of preachers to wake them up out of their 16 year slumber to finish the job God called them too. God completes the work, and we focus on His will, not our circumstances.
Our past doesn't define us, but satan wants us to think it does. It's how he operates. The remnant are reminded of their past and so is the king, causing a halt to their plans of rebuilding. Jesus conquered our past, and we are united under Him, and He casts out our fear.
We recorded from our iPhones in sunny SoCal. What if we actually lived out what we believed? Our lives would look different and so would our worship.
They're finally back in their homeland. Nothing could ever disappoint the Israelites now right? It's all set up perfectly, and rejoicing ensues...until expectations aren't met. Begging the question, is our worship about us and the experience, or about Christ?
We launched our new series on Sunday entitled, "Rebuild". We're diving in to some details around the books and some takeaways from the first couple chapters.
It had been 70 years since the first of them had been exiled. Now, Cyrus has decreed them to go back to their land and rebuild their lives. What left as a broken nation, now returns as a humbled people ready to rebuild by Gods design. Sometimes God needs to break it down in order to rebuild our identity around Him.
We're a lot like the Israelites. The Israelites are a lot like us. Forgetting the promises of God, coming back to God, forgetting the promises, coming back to God. We get so comfortable in our own skin that we miss what God has for us.
Where Jesus resides in our lives either makes Him the Cornerstone on which we build our lives, or a stumbling block that we fall on. The decision is completely up to us, and the ramifications are eternal.

Paul closes his letter to the Galatians with a summary in his own handwriting. It's essentially a cliff notes of the entire book: reject the legalism from the Judaizers, and embrace the grace of Jesus Christ through His work on the cross. When we do that, we boast in the glory of the cross, and bear the marks of Jesus in our lives.
Pauls address to the Galatians has been filled with warning and practical application. We continue on with practical application for walking in the Spirit. God has called us to be different, and to use our finances to build into our abundanat life. We reap what we sow, and if we sow things of the flesh, corruption and destruction follows, but if we sow into our spiritual life, we reap an abundant life.
Feel the unbearable weight of massive talent? (Looking at you Nic Cage) Or when life gets too heavy? Hopefully you've got a community around you that'll help you bear the weight. Paul instructs us to bear one another's burdens and to restore gently. Sin can befall all of us, so be ready to restore.
Paul writes two lists. One attributed to works of the flesh, and one as fruit of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit has no limit and should be the mark of every follower of Christ.
Paul issues a statement about freedom: don't use it for your own flesh, but to serve others. It's how they'll know we're Christians..by our love.
Paul urges the Galatians to resist legalism and cling to the grace of Jesus. He's the exclusively inclusive Savior and His death and resurrection gives us life.
Paul argues that Judaizers and legalizers are no longer children of the promise. His reference to Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar is both shocking and revealing. Legalism promotes self righteousness and is enslaved to law, while grace promotes Christ and is free. Our implication then is to live supernaturally in our day to day lives.
Paul has a reminder for the Galatians. He's not their enemy. Just because he's got some rebuke for them doesn't undo their relationship. We keep that in mind today as Clayton shares that oftentimes sanctification takes rebuke.
Requirements are a part of life. But are they a part of the life of following Jesus? Yes. But not in ways you think.
What's the law good for anyways? Is there anything good about the law? What is the law? How does my relationship with Christ affect my relationship with biblical law? Paul addresses all of this in this section of Galatians. Buckle up, because it's got incredible consequences for us as well.
Paul finally addresses the Galatians current predicament, and uses strong language in the process. He simply wants to know: was it the law that saved you or hearing and believing? Jesus' love remains the same whether we are in the pig pen or the party, and there's nothing we can do to change it.
Paul continues to remind the Galatians of the time he opposed Peter for hypocritically siding with the legalizers. He tells the church that Jesus is enough and he's been crucified with Christ. He's put to death his old self and clings now to a new life in Christ. Our response to Christ gets to be the same.
Paul recounts a time he had to defend the gospel against hypocricy and legalism. Above all else, no matter the cost, we defend the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Paul recounts his visit to the Jerusalem council as a way of telling them he has already dealt with the issue of legalism with the most famous of all the Christians - Peter, James (the brother of Jesus) and John. From this passage we can learn that we need to reach the who in front of you, and that the what is more important than the how.
We often discuss different characters and personalities God uses in the Bible, but this week we're focusing on the buts He uses.
What are we seeking? If it's anything other than Christ we're going to find ourselves stressed, busy, unfulfilled, and disappointed. Like Paul, we need to not seek the approval of (fill in the blank), but seek the approval of God.
What's Paul so angry about? It's just a little bit of legalism. Paul knows even just a little bit of legalism is going to corrupt the entire Gospel. Legalism is counterfeit gospel, grace is the true Gospel.
We start a brand new series where we left off the last one. Jesus' prayer for the disciples and what's gone on since His ascension. It's a fight for the Gospel as others try to swoop in and require more than simple faith. These ideas get to the Apostle Paul, who writes an angry letter to the churches in Galatia. This is the introduction to his letter to them, and us. A reminder to keep Jesus as the center and abandon any other gospel other than grace by faith in Christ.
We're taking a break from our series to chat with The Tabernacle's Tim Burgess. He shares his faith story with us, and encourages us to take a risk and do what God calls us to do.
The Resurrection proves that Jesus has overcome. Everything He said In The Room now makes sense to the disciples. He turns a hopeless situation on it's head, and does the same thing for us if we choose to follow Him.
Jesus continues to try to reassure the disciples that His leaving is for their benefit. We take a look at just how that plays out and we ask the question of what are we going to do with Jesus?
Jesus tells us what the worlds reception is of those who remain in Him...and it's not great. Regardless, we don't lower our standards based on the worlds acceptance. In order to follow Him, we must throw off the god of comfort and seek God the Comforter.
Struggling with what God wants you to do with your life? Thankfully Jesus answers that question and more in John 15. Gods will for our lives is not rational, it's relational.
Loving Jesus means we follow His commands. While it's not always an easy thing, it's always the right thing. Jesus knew it wouldn't be easy, so He said He was sending a Helper. That Helper indwells those who follow Him.
Trouble seems to follow us wherever we go. If we have breath in our lungs, trouble is lurking around every corner. We're promised trouble in life. We're also promised a way through the trouble and peace while in times of trouble. We look to Jesus, who says He is the way, the truth and the life.
Elvis was wrong. We can help falling in love. Love is a choice. Jesus instructs the disciples, and us, to love one another. In fact, he says that the world will know we are His disciples in the way we love one another, something we've fallen far short of.
Have you ever thought of yourself as greater than you actually are? Of course you have. Because you're human. We all have. Jesus gives us what we need in order to combat that and remind us that pride misses the point, something we can't afford when it comes to Jesus and what He calls us to be.
Jesus shares the most incredible and controversial thing with His disciples. We may breeze by it as we read, but for the disciples it'd have dropped their jaws. It's implication also reaches us today.
As we enter into the room, Jesus gives us a striking example of what it means to be a leader in His Kingdom.
The air is electric at the start of passover. Rumblings of Him have been echoing for the last 3 years, and they've reached their fever pitch. Could He be the Messiah? Join us as we embark on a series going into the room of the last supper, and prepare for Jesus the King.
We've reached the end of Genesis. What does this last chapter have in store? It's a microcosm of the entire book of Genesis. The common theme amongst the "greats" in Genesis is they operated by faith, and out of a response to Him, not them.
Genesis 49 reads a bit like someone reading their will. Only in this will, it shapes the future of the tribes of Israel. Each one is given a blessing fitting to them. Romans 12 tells us that we are to use our gifts according to the measure of faith that God has given us. Your gift is your gift and when unsure, do the givens (Romans 12:9-13).
Fathers are obsessed with passing on something to their children. Most of the time it's an inheritance of some kind, a property, car, or possession of some kind. In these touching last few chapters of Genesis, we see the Patriarch Israel passing on his wisdom on trusting God and His promises. What we take from this is that God is with me, is greater than me, and we leave God as our legacy.
Sometimes the problems around us seem overwhelming and stop us from doing anything. But if we learn anything from the life of Joseph and to an extent, his father Jacob, it's that we simply do what we can and remember that it's a sojourn type of life. We don't stay here, and we need to live with eterntiy in mind.
Things change. That's a given. But how do we respond when God changes things in our lives? Do we have the bandwidth to deal with it or does it derail us completely? It's what we dig into today as we look into Genesis 46 and how Jacob responds to changes.
The brothers of Joseph receive the most powerful gift: forgiveness. That same gift is available to us through Jesus. When we experience that forgiveness, we proclaim what we have seen and heard. Our hope is that you experience the gift of forgiveness this Christmas season.
Guilt is a powerful thing. Entire lives can be defined by guilt. There is only one thing that can help us live in a life of freedom from guilt and all of Josephs brothers are about to find out what that is in Chapter 44.
When we face a famine, the quickest way out isn't always the right way out. God has a plan and a purpose in our pain. Joseph and the brothers are on the way to reconciliation because of everything that's happened before this chapter. We can find hope in that.
We see guilt playing a major role in Genesis 42. 10 brothers can't escape what they've done no matter how much time has passed...and their past catches up to them. We're reminded through this story that Jesus wants our past, present and future.
Ever feel like a victim or God's forgotten about you? Take heart in knowing that God works everything out for our good according to HIS purpose. Joseph rises the ranks after he interprets Pharaoh's dream.
God has a way of bringing stories together for His glory. Chapter 40 is full of waiting on God, working for Him while you wait, and trusting Him with the outcomes.
We start a new series in Genesis called, Detours and Delays. God often times takes us on a winding path that doesn't make sense but is there to prepare us. We can learn from Joseph how to continue to remain in Jesus as we walk this path.
Our insecurities shouldn't deter us from being able to speak into other peoples lives. If our sin is keeping us quiet, we need to work on the sin. Kind of like taking the plank out of our eye before we work in the speck in someone elses.
Day 4. We cannot speculate when we make judgements, or judge based on perceptions or outward appearance.
What role do our feelings, opinions and personal beliefs have to do with judgements? Unfortunately quite a bit. Judging our fellow Christian means putting aside biases and opinions and feelings and sticking to what Scripture tells us.
Our brains immediately jump to condemnation when we hear the word judge, but it's important to understand the distinction between the two words and how they separate one from the other. As always, we look to Jesus.
For the next 5 days, we're releasing a topic each evening on judging others and what that looks like in a biblical way. Night One focuses on judging to give life, and taking a look inward before we look at others.
In the last chapter of Why This Family, we arguably get the most Why This Family story. Before we judge too harshly this messed up family, let's take a look at the culture and see what's going on, and then use grace and understanding when we judge.
The life of Joseph teaches us many things, one of the more common being God uses the experiences of our lives for His purpose. His purpose? Changed hearts. Genesis 37 introduces us to the storyline of Joseph and his life and legacy.
Chapter 36 is all about the genealogy of Esau. It seems like he's got a pretty great life, but as with most things, pride is a ruinous element and Esaus line is not exempt. We take a look at the book of Obadiah to understand the rest of Esau's story, and reads like a warning to the proud.
More often than not we don't need more information, but reminders. Jacob is reminded of who's he is in this chapter and also that God is the legacy.
What do we do with the 34's of the Bible? We use it as a warning for our own lives.

Full obedience and surrender is hard. Especially when life gets in the way. Jacob starts off chapter 33 more like Israel, and by the end looks a lot like Jacob.
Jacob finds himself in a wrestling match with Jesus Himself after a full chapter of fear and planning. He learns victory comes in defeat. A lesson we also need to learn.
Jacob and Laban get into a tiff. But the response is what matters. This chapter gives us a masterclass in putting aside differences for the betterment of those around us.

Genesis 30 sees an intense competition between sisters and a crooked father in law. Sure, they say they want God to be a part of their lives, but certainly not over their lives. For us, Jesus doesn't want to be a part of our lives, he wants to BE our life.
Have you ever asked yourself, "how did I get here?" You're not alone. Jacob by the end of Genesis 29 must be asking himself the same question. Thankfully, God's not done with you yet. If we can see the issue we can fix the issue. And we can be better when we know better through the power of the Cross.
In Genesis 28, Jacob goes on a journey and has a dream that God shows up in coming down a ladder. Jacob wakes up and builds a shrine to God and is sure that this is where God is. We often do the same things with our responses to spiritual awakenings. We begin worshipping the place more than the Person of Christ.
Trusting someone can be the most difficult thing as humans. It doesn't matter if it's a close friend, family member, or even a spouse. If trust has been broken once, it can be very hard to regain. Trust is a foundation of faith, and Genesis 27 is a prime example of what happens when we don't trust God with the outcome.
It's the last week of Promises, and the promise gets passed on to Isaac. He starts out in the famine, but God's promise still remains. There's something we can learn from that.
We all have moments in life that stop us in our tracks. These can be good moments or tragic moments. Isaac has many such moments in chapter 25 and so do his (spoiler) two sons.
Obedience means movement. In chapter 24 Abraham tells his servant to go find his son Isaac a wife from his home land. The servant doesn't gather a committee, doesn't wait on it for several days. He goes. Our encouragement is to do the same.
After the death of his wife, Sarah, Abraham has an encounter with the locals that gives us the example of how to interact with our communities.
Is God good? The answer to that question defines our faith or lack thereof. If He is good, then what He asks Abraham to do can be trusted. Abraham trusted in the goodness of God, and God Himself.
Freedom is something that has to be continually pursued. When we live in the Spirit we experience true freedom. Living in the Spirit means we give up the bad things for God things, the good things for God things and we stand up for God things. Abraham experiences this in Genesis 21 and so do we daily.
Communication kills conflict. Abraham reverts back to old habits even in his old age, but thankfully a pagan king once again rebukes him and they talk it out.
Lot finds out the hard way, that compromising with our convictions leads us to Sodom. The little things we give ground on have far reaching ramifications.
Abraham has another encounter with God. This time he gets to get involved in some plans and speak what he's thinking. Prayer works like that. What are you praying for, and who are you praying for?
Remarkable faith is marked by action. Genesis 17 sees Abram get his name changed and also have a pretty intense action step. But don't let the actions and traditions become our god. God is God and He's the reason we have faith and follow.
We're introduced to Hagar in Genesis 16. We find similarities between us and Genesis 16. Throughout the story we see that the end does not justify the means and we need to transform ourselves, not circumstances through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Ever struggle with transparency with Jesus? When we are open and honest with our circumstances and life with Jesus, he'll meet us where we are to bring us to where He is.
War has broken out and Lot is stuck in the middle of it. Abram comes to the rescue and is greeted by two different kings. One representing sin and one representing Jesus. Which one will we choose?
Abram gives us an example of what it means to give up our rights for the sake of others. Surrendering our rights is right. We prioritize Jesus over people, people over possessions and continue trusting the process.
We start our next series in Genesis, Promises. God starts out Genesis 12 with 5 "I will" statements. Abram still manages to mess it up. Just like we would.
If the first 11 chapters has taught us anything, it's that sin repeats itself and God's plan transcends people. Thankfully Gods promise is restoration at the end of all things. Chapter 11 finds us once again with the depravity of man, and yet again, God continuing His plan.
What can a bunch of names tell us about who God is and how we fit into His plan? From mountaintops to valleys, God is through it all with us. Sometimes we're lead into valleys, sometimes we fall into valleys, but no matter what happens, God is there and leads us to new mountains.
Ever feel like you have been forgotten? So has Noah. But chapter 8 starts with God remembering Noah. And He remembers us too.
There's more than just a big boat to the story of Noah. We either experience a flood of judgement or grace. That choice is ours. Will we willingly do all that God commands us or be forced to at the end of all things?
Angel sex? Really? Well...take a listen and find out. When God leads my theology, spiritual realms exist, faith does the unpopular thing, and our faith preps us for heaven while on earth. Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. Who are we trying to find favor in?
What is it about Enoch that gets him several words in the genealogy of Adam where few get as much said about themselves? Enoch walked with God and was taken up before death could take him. God highly values that we walk in step with him as opposed to contradiction with him.
Am I bitter or better? The world is constantly headed towards entropy and pain. Genesis 4 is the continuation of entropy. We see chapter 4 made Cain bitter. When Adam and Eve were faced with a similar exile, they chose to be better. How we choose to respond to trials dictates our paths. As James 1:12 says, we must withstand the testing of our faith to receive the crown of life.
The fall. Everything that we experience now started here. Chapter 3. The pivot point of humanity to a need of a Savior. Thankfully God is gracious and merciful and is the embodiment of love so we can have right relationship with Him.
In Genesis 2, the author (most likely Moses) goes into some more detail in how God created Adam and Eve. From this account we can gather that God is a giver.
We start a brand new series in Genesis! We'll be going through one chapter each week. This week we start at the very beginning. Our clues to whether or not we have any value starts with verse one. "In the beginning, God created...". That statement launches a whole new set of questions about Him and what it means for us.
Those who heard Jesus sermon on the mount were astonished at His teaching because He spoke as one who had authority. Are we astonished today of Him? Does He have authority in our lives?
In the closing statements from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus instructs His followers (and us) to not just hear his words but to do them. When we act on His truth, our foundation is like a house built on a rock as opposed to one on the sand.
The key to following Christ is not in the grand gestures but in the quiet plodding of the soul towards Him.
Jesus warns us to be on our guard against wolves dressed up as sheep. Clayton shares how we can learn discernment, and why ignorance is not an excuse.
We read a list from the Civil Rights Movement and discuss how the Prodigal son fits in to the Golden Rule.
Jesus reaches the pinnacle of the Sermon on the Mount with Matthew 7:12. The implication of it is that it becomes a very narrow way of living, leading us to verses 13 and 14. When we put them all together, we see that Jesus wants to play loose and with purpose, to realize Jesus straightens our lives, and that we need to daily choose a gate to walk through.
What does context mean in a biblical sense? And does the sermon from Sunday mean we can't pray for individual things?
Jesus instructs us to ask, seek, and knock continually. But we can miss the point entirely and get misconceptions about it when not applied correctly. Instead of asking for boats, houses, cars, and material things, we ask for the things that align us to God.
Cancel culture is nothing new. While it has taken on different forms over the years, it's something that has continually popped up. Jesus speaks directly to the issue of judging others while ignoring our own issues.

It's fitting that the last message for 2020 is on the topic of anxiety. Jesus goes after it in this portion of the sermon on the mount and encourages us to shift our perspective and be singularly focused.
