The Canadian Potcast is produced for Pattison Media. In this episode: In the USA cannabis is classified as medically useless, and as dangerous as heroin since 1971, on the federal level at least. Cannabis was first banned in the U.S. in 1937. In this episode of Potcast, we tell the story of Harry J Anslinger, the man whose political ambition and racism led to that ban. Also, while cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, businesses that operate in legal states have to jump through all kinds of hoops to do their banking. We talk to a cannabis banker about how to navigate that bureaucratic mess.

About the show

Potcast is the preeminent source for information about and for the cannabis industry. Every episode will analyze the business of cannabis with interviews and news from inside the industry. This show is the tool you'll need to educate yourself about cannabis and cannabis regulations.

Tune in every month for new shows or visit our audio library on The Western Buzz where you can find even more information about everything cannabis related in Western Canada.

The Canadian Potcast is produced by Everything Podcasts, a division of Pattison Media.

The firefighters standing in front of Peace Arch Hospital on an autumn day last year weren’t there to respond to an emergency, but they were there to respond to an urgent need. Instead of ladders, hoses, and other firefighting equipment, they had brought a large cheque – large in physical size, large in dollar amount, and very large in terms of heart and commitment to the local communities they serve.

They were firefighters from the Surrey and White Rock communities, men and women who know all too well the mental toll that comes from being first on the scene of extreme emergencies that most of us will never encounter. The generous gift they brought to Peace Arch that day in November was in support of an issue at the forefront of the firefighters’ philanthropy as they witness their colleagues often struggle with the emotional demands of the job.

The issue was mental health. And the cause? The hospital’s new Mental Health Care and Substance Use Zone. But why did the Surrey firefighters choose Peace Arch Hospital as the recipient of such a large gift? And why is supporting mental health so important to them and other first responders in the region?

We’ll answer those questions and more in this episode of Power to Heal. You’ll also learn how the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation reaches out to community partners like the Surrey firefighters in order to provide better health care for everyone in the White Rock/South Surrey area.

Guests:

  • Aaron Cyr and Dylan Van Rooyen of the Surrey Fire Fighter's Charitable Society.
  • Stephanie Beck, Associate Director of Philanthropy for the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation.

ABOUT THE POWER TO HEAL PODCAST

Presented by Peace Arch Hospital Foundation in White Rock, British Columbia, Power to Heal takes you behind the scenes of an innovative hospital foundation and introduces you to the team who find new and sometimes surprising ways to engage with the local community and help fund the best health care possible in the region.

An integral part of hundreds of thousands of communities worldwide are their hospitals. The engine that drives those institutions are their foundations, without which the wheels of progress would turn very slowly. This series uncovers the ways Peace Arch Hospital Foundation connects with the community to stay ahead of health issues, challenge the norm and foster a spirit of innovation.

Since 1988, the Foundation has raised over $195 million for capital projects, medical equipment, and community health programs. Their passionate and caring team’s number one priority is the prudent stewardship of your gifts and the resulting positive impact on patients and medical staff at Peace Arch Hospital and the entire White Rock-South Surrey community.

The Power to Heal series is hosted by Wayne Cox, veteran television/radio broadcaster and long-time resident of the White Rock/South Surrey area.

Almost every aspect of our lives incorporates a digital element, from the alarm on our phone to wake us up to reading an e-book when we go to bed. But exploring and realizing the potential of digitization involves embracing a new mindset that challenges us to not only apply digital technologies to existing activities but to ‘unlearn’ old reflexes and learn different ways of working.

Companies from Lego to Disney have invested heavily in digital technologies to support their expansion plans. Increased market opportunities, responsiveness, enhanced productivity, and improved efficiency are “just” surface-level drivers for digital transformation.

Over 100 years of BDO in Canada

What began with a small office in Winnipeg over 100 years ago has grown to more than 100 locations across Canada and thousands more around the world.

BDO Canada has come a long way since founder Colonel James M. Dunwoody left Belfast for Canada, starting a firm of chartered accountants. National and international alliances were formed through a series of partnerships, helping position BDO for success in Canada. Today, we offer 4,000 professionals in offices from Vancouver to St. John’s, serving clients across many industries.

In 2021, we celebrated the significant milestone of our centennial. Throughout the year, we highlighted our history, challenges we’ve overcome, our growth, the ways we give back to our communities, our people, our leaders, and our clients that have made BDO what it is today.

Locations and strategies may have changed, but our focus has not. We remain committed to understanding our client's needs, fostering strong relationships through hands-on partner involvement, and delivering exceptional service. And as our clients grow, our capabilities expand with them, always in pursuit of providing the highest levels of strategic insight and technical skill.

In addition to discussing how these initiatives can help support administration costs and capacity building, we look at the chilling effect of the WeCharity scandal on nonprofit organizations' willingness to embrace these new models.

Join our host, CharityVillage President Mary Barroll, as she speaks to sector experts about the risks and rewards that Canadian charities and nonprofits must think about as they look to diversify their revenue and engage in alternative funding models.

Hailo was a British technology platform that matched taxi drivers and passengers through its mobile phone application. Unlike competitors Uber and ridesharing app Lyft, the London-based start-up partnered with existing taxi services. Founded in London in 2011, the Hailo taxi service was available in 16cities. By May 2013, Hailo had enabled more than three million rides for passengers from over 30,000 registered taxi drivers. Then they decided to expand into the U.S. and Canada. It took London, U.K.-based taxi-finding app Hailo less than a year and a half to decide it wasn’t up for a rumble with entrenched competitors Uber and Lyft. This is their story.

Guest
Peter Matutat, National Technology Leader and a Partner at BDO Canada returns to discuss Hailo. Peter specializes in emerging technology companies. He has dealt with public and private tech companies for the past two decades.

About the show
This show is about doing business globally. We provide expert insights for Canadian companies looking to enter new markets and stay competitive. Whether your business has international presence, is considering the beginning of an international expansion or, if you’re in the middle of revising your expansion plan, then this show is for you.

We remain committed to understanding our clients’ needs, fostering strong relationships through hands-on partner involvement, and delivering exceptional service. And as our clients grow, our capabilities expand with them, always in pursuit of providing the highest levels of strategic insight and technical skill.

Is it simply a question of cost? Or is something more fundamental at work here, such as a lack of skills and understanding of how digital technology can help charitable organizations better connect with donors and volunteers? In this episode we learn inequality is not just a personal experience of extreme poverty or exorbitant wealth, there are wider effects of inequality on political stability and social cohesion. What starts in the economy as income and wealth inequality radiate through society and politics in ways that generate polarization. We examine more closely the balance between the state, the market and society and ask what effect inequality has on social democracy? What effect can social democracy have on addressing inequality? This final episode explores how public policy can be used to improve inequality.

Bored at the Airport is produced for BDO Canada. This series is about doing business globally. BDO provides expert insights for Canadian companies looking to enter new markets and stay competitive. Whether your business has international presence, is considering the beginning of an international expansion or, if you’re in the middle of revising your expansion plan, then this show is for you.

Best Buy also received a lot of praise for being one of the few traditional brick-and-mortar retailers to survive the retail apocalypse that killed or significantly weakened many of its competitors, like Sears and Kmart. Its stock peaked back in 2018 and it’s still the top retailer of consumer electronics, even beating out e-commerce giant Amazon. But in the years after the 2008 financial crisis, one part of Best Buy’s recovery plan failed spectacularly on two fronts: its expansion into the United Kingdom and China proved disastrous. In the UK, after just two years, the company closed its 11 big box stores and exited the country.

This three-part series of dialogues is led by Dr. Johnna Montgomerie, Professor of International Political Economy, at Kings College London. In this virtual symposium, we’ve called on experts from the politics of inequality working group at King's College, London, and sought out our colleagues at other universities to share their ideas, research, and proposals to help explain what it means to call inequality issue of our time. We wanted to examine who was unequal, what causes inequality and why it's an urgent area of study.

This episode introduces a virtual symposium of academics, students and practitioners who believe inequality is the issue of our time. We draw expert opinions of those from King’s College London, the London School of Economics and the University of Sydney. Inequality is a compelling problem that shows us the urgent need to find a solution through these dialogues. This episode looks at the importance of contextualizing inequality. And we do this through discussion of Thomas Picketty’s book “Capital in the 21st Century,” and Mike Savage’s cutting-edge book, “The Return of Inequality.” Inequality takes many forms. We combine understandings of the weight of history with the economic frames of income and wealth inequality and do this to recognize the conditions that create and reproduce inequality between groups in society.

Welcome to a three-part podcast series by Seva Canada. Almost everyone will need access to eye care services during their lifetime. Sight is so much more than just good vision. For many in low- and middle-income countries, blindness and visual impairment means poverty and loss of opportunity.

1.1 billion people live with vision loss and 90% live in low- and middle-income countries where access to care is limited. And the need is growing. Estimates predict that by 2050, due to an aging and growing population, vision loss will increase by 55% or 600 million people over the next 30 years. Unless there is significant investment current eye care services are unlikely to cope with future needs.

Seva Canada’s vision is a world in which no one is needlessly blind or visually impaired. Give the power of sight and transform a life today at seva.ca

Welcome to the premiere episode of the Canadian Museums Association podcast. This is the first in a three-part series centered on the state of museums today viewed through the lens of the CMA’s 2022 conference theme, Dismantling Foundations to Build a Better Tomorrow.

Unvarnished, the series
This series is centered on the state of museums today viewed through the lens of the CMA’s 2022 conference theme, Dismantling Foundations to Build a Better Tomorrow.

Over the course of the series, we will hear from three speakers sharing their perspectives of the present, past and future of the Canadian museum sector.

Massimo Bergamini is CEO and Executive Director of the Canadian Museums Association.
Heather George, is an Indigenous curator currently working at the Woodland Cultural Centre and a CMA Board member.

And Lou-ann Neel, an artist and arts advocate currently working at Creative BC, British Columbia’s creative industry catalyst, following a 3-year tenure as head of Indigenous Collections at the Royal BC Museum. Lou-ann is also a member of the CMA Reconciliation Council.

About Canadian MuseumsMuseums are at the heart of a just and knowledgeable society. They educate and inspire. They house our culture and history. They create a sense of community and belonging. They allow us to better understand our past, our present and shape our future. They spark conversations and reflection. They build empathy and understanding for each other and remind us how diversity makes us stronger.

The Canadian Museum Association (CMA) is the voice for Canada’s vibrant museum community, from small, volunteer-driven organizations to cherished national institutions, and for the millions of Canadians whose lives are enriched by museums.

We advocate for public policies and support, we build skills across the profession, and we establish and inspire connections to strengthen and sustain museums.

It’s no secret that the pandemic has had a seismic impact on our lives, and the way we seek healthcare advice. Local pharmacies have seized the opportunity, stepped up to the plate and, to date, administered a record number of vaccinations to the Canadian public.

We were also in the frontlines conducting massive numbers of COVID-19 tests. But how exactly has this virus shifted the average Canadian’s perception of community pharmacists and the part that they play in healthcare?

Geraldine Vance, CEO of the British Columbia Pharmacy Association joins Pindy on this episode.
