Between 46 and 60% of all children experience at least one type of trauma by age 18.

26% of children will experience a traumatic event before they turn 4.

In 2018, Governor Carney issued Executive Order #24 prioritizing efforts for Delaware to become a trauma-responsive state.

I recently attended Delaware’s Trauma Awareness Conference, and had the pleasure of sitting down with Delaware’s First Lady, Tracy Carney.

I hope you enjoy our talk as much as I did!

In this podcast episode I sit down with Dr. Lori Desautels and I love what she said, “Behavior management is about adult behavior. It’s not about kids. Our brains and bodies hold the state of our nervous systems, and it takes a steady adult to settle a child or adolescent.”

I was hanging on her every word that she spoke at Delaware’s Trauma Awareness Conference last month. She was the keynote speaker and I attended her breakout session. I’m planning to read her books and have been following her on YouTube and tiktok.

I just love what she said in one of her sessions listen to this, “When we share a safe emotionally available sanctuary of space and a trusting presence, students can borrow from our calm in moments of dysregulation.” - Dr. Lori Desautels

"Coregulation is often non-verbal. Coregulation is our biological priority. Coregulation is at the heart of discipline protocols." - Dr. Lori Desautels

"The adult nervous system drives trauma work." - Dr. Lori Desautels"

"Trauma gets stored in the body but can show up in our relationships," says Dr. Wong.

I told you she is filled with GOLD NUGGETS! Thank you Dr. Desautels!

The biggest factor that will eliminate you having to yell at your child, is creating an atmosphere of cooperation and eliminating the need to yell.

As a child who had a Dad that would yell often, Celia learned early on the devastating affects of growing up in a house where there is a lot of yelling and negativity. Kids that grow up in that environment, lack confidence in themselves and have an extremely low self-worth.

Dr. Celia is on a mission to stop 1,000,000 parents from yelling at their kids!

Creating a supportive and nurturing environment at home can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and promote positive mental health.Tina, although trained as a teacher, has held many odd jobs as she and her family have traipsed across the US. As a child, Stephen was nonverbal and diagnosed with “atypical development and strong autistic tendencies.” Institutionalization was recommended—but rejected in favor of parent-based intensive early intervention and support. Dr. Shore’s parents were probably asking the same question you are, “What causes autism?”

Dr. Stephen Shore empowers autistic individuals and others in the neurodivergent community to lead fulfilling and productive lives using their strengths – just like everyone else. Making success for people on the autism spectrum and other differences the rule rather than the exception because Dr. Shore knows what autism feels like. Dr. Shore accomplishes this mission through presenting, writing and international consulting in education of and employment for autistic and otherwise neurodivergent individuals.

Dr. Shore’s Ted Talk, “The Superpower of Autism - What if we looked at Autism as a superpower instead of a limitation?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk9T7ngEijs

Today, Shore is a clinical assistant professor at the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education at Adelphi University, teaching courses in special education and autism. His research and teaching focuses on matching best practices to the needs of people with autism. Shore is internationally renowned for his presentations, consultations and writings on lifespan issues pertinent to education, relationships, employment, advocacy and disclosure. His most recent book, College for Students with Disabilities, co-authored with Pavan John Antony, Ph.D., combines personal stories and research with promoting success in higher education. A current board member of Autism Speaks, president emeritus of the Asperger’s Association of New England, advisory board member of Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Association (AHANY) and advisory board member of the Autism Society, Shore also serves on the boards of the U.S. Autism and Asperger Association, the Scientific Counsel of OAR and other autism-related organizations.

Stephen understands and appreciates each part of a bicycle, not because he’s an avid rider or mechanic, but because he is on the autism spectrum. Stephen explains that having autism creates a desire to understand things, a desire to understand why things are the way they are in the simplest terms possible, a desire to understand the world so he can relate to it.

At the young age of 18-months-old, Stephen was hit with what he calls the regressive autism bomb. Doctors had little faith in his future development and recommended his parents institutionalize him. Luckily, his parents persisted and were able to have Stephen placed in a school just one year later. When Stephen first began his academic journey, he did not know how to function and communicate in a classroom setting normally. He recalls engaging in unusual behavior such as repeating the letter B over and over to classmates and preferring to read books alone in the library rather than interact with teachers. His time in school was undoubtedly a challenge, but Stephen was determined to persevere and succeed despite his autism.

And Stephen did just that. Now, Stephen is working as an agent of autism to show others that autism is not a disability, but rather something that, like bicycles, needs to be understood and appreciated for what it is. Stephen’s passion is to increase awareness in others of what autism truly is and how it affects those on the spectrum. He wants to be a voice for those who cannot explain their condition, and he has done this in many ways already.

Stephen Shore truly is the agent of autism, as he has built a career around increasing education on autism. He has written several books including College for Students with Disabilities, Understanding Autism for Dummies, Ask and Tell, and Beyond the Wall. Stephen was one of the first two people with autism to serve on the board of Autism Speaks and has been invited to speak about autism in venues including TedX. The Boston University graduate has turned his passion into action his whole life and finds true happiness in simply informing people on why autism is not a disability, but the thing that shaped his whole life.

Stephen Shore’s story is one of perseverance, inspiration, passion, struggle, and finally, success. Stephen has made a name for himself as the agent of autism, and the world has taken notice.

Since we have no idea what the economic, political, or environmental landscape will look like when today’s students graduate, we owe it to the next generation to adapt our education practices to meet their needs in facing an increasingly uncertain future.

We need to stop educating children for jobs that we had. We have to do something different, something new, something revolutionary. Open Source Learning is the new wave of education.

Does your child struggle going to school? I bet he wouldn’t if the school was an Open Source Learning Academy.

Open Source Learning engages students in their area of interest - and they learn from those in the field doing what they are interested about, and they connect with them, wherever that individual may be in the world…and yes, they are still able to meet the common core standards.

What students said in Mr. Preston’s class, “I didn’t hate my life for a half hour.”

Many of Dr. Preston’s consulting clients and university students confided that they had to unlearn and recover from what they were taught in school in order to be successful in their careers. In school, we’re told to be quiet and keep our eyes on our own papers. At work, we’re asked why we can’t be better team players.

For a long time in our country, we tolerated education’s shortcomings and the disconnect between school and life after graduation. Generations of parents told their children to suffer because it built character and a diploma was the ticket to the good life. Not anymore.

In a time when teachers and students wonder where education is heading as they grapple with the effects of the pandemic and a deep history of inequalities, David Preston brings us hope with Academy of One. Through students' powerful stories, we learn how Open-Source Learning catalyzes a student-centered pedagogy to create an empowering educational philosophy for the 21st century. Instead of inhibiting students’ curiosity and responsibility, or labeling them with standardized tests and grades, Preston invites us to defy conventional methods, trust students’ capacities, nurture the use of new technology to transform our learning journeys, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and amplify our grasp of effective knowledge.

There are very few things more heart-wrenching for a family than having your child addicted to alcohol or drugs. The most dangerous attitude a parent can have is thinking, “It could never happen to my child”, says Rick Capriola.

Rick joined me this year at our virtual Mental Health Summit! What he has to share…every parent needs to hear. Share this with someone you know.

In Richard Capriola’s new book, “The Addicted Child” (2020) - he explains substances being used by today's adolescents and the addictions which accompany teen substance abuse, like self-harm and eating disorders. Richard Capriola has been a mental health and addictions counselor for over two decades.

If your child uses alcohol or drugs, you know how it affects your family. These substances enter your child’s brain and change their behavior. You want to help your child, but where do you begin? The Addicted Child is your roadmap. Learn what makes adolescent addiction different. How drugs can change your child’s brain and behaviors. The assessments and tests you should insist upon. And more.

Sadly, your desperate search for help often leaves you feeling alone and without a roadmap to guide you through the process of helping your child. The Addicted Child was written for you. The percentage of teens using illicit substances dropped significantly in 2021 as the pandemic forced them into isolating from friends, classrooms and extracurricular activities. Alcohol, marijuana and nicotine vaping – the most commonly used substances by teens all showed declines from 2020. These findings were reported by a Monitoring the Future survey conducted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research – http://www.monitoringthefuture.org.

Two issues drive teen substance use: drug availability and perception of risk.

Do you ever find yourself not laughing as much with your kids? Do you miss the fun of your younger years? My guest today is Michael Rucker, author of, “The Fun Habit” - How the Disciplined Pursuit of Joy and Wonder can Change your Life. He is also an organizational psychologist, behavioral scientist and charter member of the International Positive Psychology Association.

After a string of misfortune in 2016, including Mike’s brother’s untimely death, he began to critically evaluate modern approaches to happiness. During this journey, he had an epiphany: his pursuit of happiness was actually making him… unhappy. He realized trying to be “happy” only drew his attention to what was missing. Fixating on his lack of happiness made him label himself as unhappy, and he came to realize that the maladaptive label was bleeding into his identity. This left him with the question: If deliberately chasing happiness leaves me miserable, what’s the alternative? Then, after years of research and trial and error, a second crucial insight clicked into place: We can’t always make ourselves happy, but we all possess the agency to find ways to be more joyful and have more fun.

Unlike happiness, fun isn’t something that may or may not arise under the perfect circumstances or when all of my “if-onlys” are fulfilled. Having fun is an action anyone can take here and now practically anywhere, anytime.

And if you’re a cynic like he was and need to see the proof, science shows us that fun is enormously beneficial to our well-being, both physically and psychologically.

So, let’s have fun together.

Mental Health Summit was kicked off this year with a guided meditation led by William Meyer. We brought the recording here for you. It’s a great way to start your day or take a mindful moment in the middle of your day.

William Meyer is the author of “Big Breath” and “Healing Breath” - Calm your worries and build your bravery — or just relax during a busy day or wind down before bed with these two picture books.

All day long, you breathe — in and out, in and out — without even thinking about it. But did you know that you can play with your breath, use it to take you on an adventure? All you have to do is find a comfy spot and close your eyes.

Does your breath sound like ocean waves? Like the wind before a storm or a breeze at the start of spring? Can you feel it all the way down to the tips of your toes? By the time you open your eyes, you might just feel a little lighter, calmer, more relaxed.

Bill Meyer is also the author of two adventure chapter books for kids. He also published a guide for meditation in the classroom called, Three Breaths and Begin. He holds degrees from Dartmouth, Harvard and has a PhD from NYU in Education.

September is Suicide Prevention Month and I wanted to bring a guest who could share their experience losing a loved one from death by suicide.

3 weeks prior to giving birth to triplets, Barbara Rubel’s father died by suicide. Her story was featured in an Emmy award winning documentary, “Fatal Mistakes” and she shares her story in her recent book, “But, I Didn’t Get to Say Goodbye”. She is a board certified expert in traumatic stress and she is here today to help you understand the effects of trauma, help build your resilience through laughter, optimism and self-compassion. Barbara Rubel’s specialty is burnout, vicarious trauma, and compassion fatigue.

In this episode you will learn:

  • Managing grief after a suicide
  • Reactions to a suicide
  • What impacts grief after a suicide
  • A palette of grief - suggestions to help those left behind

But I Didn’t Say Goodbye: Helping Families After a Suicide tells the story, from the perspective of a family, as they are rocked by suicide and reeling from the aftermath.

The reader will see the transformation of feelings after going through death by suicide. The revised edition is an evidence-informed and contemporary treatment of a devastating form of loss that uses the artful device of a hypothetical case study to render it in human terms.

The reader will understand how to make meaning in the loss, and ways to experience personal growth. This self-help book was revised to provide guidance and education for clinicians and families to help suicide loss survivors.

The chapters in Part 2 build upon one another sequentially, from the day of the suicide to the anniversary of the death. At the end of each chapter, there are follow-up questions to explore in counseling sessions, support groups, or at home.

At our Annual Mental Health Summit, Dr. Gominak shared with us how anxiety, depression, the world epidemic of sleep disorders AND MORE are due to a lack of Vitamins D and B.

Imagine a world filled with people pain-free. Mental illness, anxiety, depression and psychosis is a thing of the past. Medical illness is reduced and medication use is minimized. Dr. Gominak believes this saying is a reality, “See your doctor once a year, heal your body every night.”

Dr. Gominak also says that autism is linked to insufficient deep sleep and that the global struggle with worsening sleep is linked to reduced sun exposure, says Dr. Gominak.

Given back enough time in deep sleep and the necessary raw materials (D and B vitamins) the brain can make up for the deep sleep that it missed and develop normal social skills even into the teens and early 20’s.

Not a morning person? Dr. Gominak says that’s due to your body not getting the correct sleep at night.

“Self awareness is the key” says Dr. Alibhai, Family Doctor, public speaker and “Community Healer.”

Dr. Alibhai opened our Mental Health Awareness Summit this year with a keynote. Listen here to this episode where we recorded it just for you.

Dr. Alibhai’s parents escaped Uganda as refugees and started their new life in Canada.

She took classes at night at the young age of 16 and became a certified fitness instructor.

She practices as a Family Doctor and is a motivating and inspiring public speaker, famous for her TedX Talk, "Emotional Literacy for Better Mental Health." She is known as a "Community Healer."

But, like each of us...she has a story.

After completing her residency in Family Medicine and birthing her first son, the stressors of life caught up with her as much as she knew a lot about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She found herself at rock bottom suffering with postpartum anxiety and feeling alone.

"The first step is to learn to be self-aware." - Dr. Alibhai

Even though Dr. Alibhai studied nutrition, exercise and medicine for ten years, she finally found the missing link - HEALTHY THINKING.

Dr. Alibhai currently works in the largest health youth clinic in British Columbia. She works with young adults ages 12-24. 1 in 5 Canadians suffer from a mental health illness.

According to Gramps Jeffrey, one of the important treasures in life is moral values.

Gramps Jeffrey’s children's book "I Don't Want to Turn 3" serves its purpose of character-building and grooming the personality of your kids by teaching them great moral lessons. It takes readers on a journey into Jordan's world. Jordan's two years old and scared because his parents expect more of him when he turns three tomorrow, and Jordan discovers what happens when you take, when you share, and when you give back.

Gramps Jeffrey wrote this book for grandparents who want to be more involved in influencing how this latest generation grows up.

Gramps Jeffrey has 4 kids and 6 grandchildren and looks at how the kids are growing up as a baby boomer trying to understand how the world has evolved since he was 3 years old.

As the author of the acclaimed business book "The Secrets of Retailing...How to Beat Walmart" and a contributor to The Huffington Post of over 100 articles on how to help the nonprofit world and also help grow small businesses, Gramps' commentary is quite timely in the challenging world we live in.

  • What Alison did when she was told her husband had 6 weeks to live
  • Why Alison says, “When you are watching someone who is leaving, there is not much to be afraid of.”
  • Handling your emotions, how to take care of yourself when you are the caregiver
  • Alison’s experience…how difficult it was to get out of bed after the loss of her husband, going through a ‘wasteland of grief’ as she calls it

  • Alison’s turning point after feeling broken and people treating her like she was broken
  • The difference between devastated, not broken
  • What you do, when you have no idea who you are. Reinventing yourself.

People want to give you what you ask them for, but they don’t want to get it wrong, especially if you are a widow. Alison found out that as long as she could be SO clear with others about what she needed, so they could not get it wrong and it wasn’t too much of a stretch for them, she got it about 80% of the time.

When we equip kids with the tools they need to develop positive peer relationships, we cause a ripple effect of prosocial behaviors resulting in not only more emotionally secure kids but stronger communities as well.

Diana is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and former Special Education teacher dedicated to helping kids develop the 21st century social skills that will lead them to happier, healthier lives.

As both an educator and mom of two boys, she is deeply invested in the type of culture we are creating for our kids. She developed and facilitated social skills groups in public schools at every grade level from preschool to high school. She believes so much in the power of social connection. She even created her own Social Skills Groups at South Bay Kids Connection!

Diane has used this as a model in creating the first of its kind - Social & Play Skills Group course.

Teaching the "soft skills" is more important than ever in today's fast paced, dynamic and nuanced social environments. It's frustrating when our students don't transfer these social skills outside of the classroom. Especially after pouring so much time and energy into teaching them.

Our students all have differing abilities. It can be exhausting and time consuming trying to piecemeal a social learning curriculum together on the fly. How can we make sure that we are teaching the right social skills, in a way that kids will enjoy and retain when there is no one size fits all curriculum?

“All children can and deserve to succeed. But the skills to achieve success today have changed,” says Diana.

In this episode you will learn:

-What are soft skills?

-Why are they so important now more than ever before?

  • What our kids need to have to develop these skills?

  • Why we explicitly teach social and play skills? (instead of just waiting for them to develop)

-How we can teach social skills to our kids/students in a way that doesn't feel like work (for them)?

There has never been a time in history when educators have felt such overwhelming levels of stress, burnout, and exhaustion. Still, we depend on teachers to be a positive guiding force in our children’s lives – often playing simultaneous roles as educator, parent, mental health counselor, and caring friend. For educators to fulfill these vital roles, it’s abundantly clear that they need to develop resiliency both inside and outside the classroom.

Lisa is a published author of Self-Compassion for Educators as well as, the creator of the AWE Method — Awakening the Wellbeing for Educators — which merges self-care, mindfulness, and self-compassion.

Lisa has a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She has taught internationally and locally. Much of her vast teaching experience was gained in classrooms across British Columbia — from Fort St. John to the Comox Valley. Currently, she is a high school counselor in the Greater Victoria School District.

Trained by mindful self-compassion pioneers Chris Germer and Kristin Neff, Lisa is also a certified Mindful Self-Compassion teacher. You can learn from her by taking an eight-week online MSC course, explore a half-day AWE retreat, or join her Year-Long Mindfulness for Educators program.

No matter the setting — classroom, counseling session, or teacher development — Lisa incorporates concepts of positive psychology, self-compassion, and mindfulness.

Check out her blog for ideas on how to incorporate aspects of mindfulness, and positive education into your classroom and the new curriculum.

https://lisabaylis.com/

Within Self-Compassion for Educators, busy and overwhelmed teachers can learn how to:

  • Reduce feelings of shame, criticism, and self-doubt
  • Anchor themselves to the present moment
  • Develop greater compassion for themselves and others
  • Mitigate the effects of chronic stress and develop resilience
  • Cultivate a sense of gratitude
  • Practice self-care routines that create sustainable well-being
  • Avoid exhaustion and burnout

Lisa Baylis has been sharing wellbeing strategies for the last 20 years. A natural born connector with an innate ability to make people feel valued and heard, she is an instructor, a counselor, a facilitator, and a mother.

Since losing her two-year-old son to cancer Laurie Singer has devoted her life to the field of mental health. Licensed Psychotherapist, Board-Certified Behavior Analyst and author of “You’re Not Crazy: Living with Anxiety, Obsessions and Fetishes” published in April 2021.

What you will learn in this episode:

  • How the pandemic impacted mental health in regards to family, friends and work
  • Covid’s impact on children and teens and how can parents help
  • Anticipatory anxiety and how it relates to issues out of our control
  • When is anxiety “normal” and when does it become problematic
  • How to help your child with anxiety

Motivated by her own personal tragedy, Laurie has devoted her life to the field of mental health with a clear vision in mind: to create a team approach for helping individuals resolve behavioral and other mental health issues by applying a unique combination of behavioral and cognitive behavioral therapies.

Her first book, released in April, 2021, is titled "You're Not Crazy: Living with Anxiety, Obsessions and Fetishes.” Using case studies from her successful practice, delivered in a digestible, narrative format and including worksheets designed for the individual to take control of their lives, the book's goal is to help those who suffer deeply from anxiety and mental health concerns. Particularly those which have been exacerbated by the devastating pandemic.

Laurie earned her post-graduate certification in Applied Behavioral Analysis from Kaplan University. She began her college studies at Oxnard College and at UCLA, and completed her undergraduate degree at UCSB. She received her masters from Cal State Northridge in Educational Psychology and proceeded to earn a license in Marriage and Family Therapy. Laurie has been a practicing Behavioral Specialist since 1995 and in private practice since 2004.

Laurie is also an endurance athlete, having made running 100-mile races nearly routine and completing 28 ultra-marathons of 31 miles or longer. She’s a 3-time Ironman competitor and in 2017 was recognized for her accomplishments as an inductee into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame.

Since losing her two-year-old son Jacob Singer to cancer in 1987, she has coordinated an annual fun run and fundraiser (Jacob’s Run) in support of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’s Child Life Program, which provides playrooms and support for patients and their families. To date, more than $350,000 has been raised in support.

She's particularly adept at discussing mental health issues that are deeply-seeded that often take hold in childhood as well as responses to current societal conditions. Case in point, she can take a deep dive in what's known as "anticipatory anxiety" where a person feels great anxiety around things that they can't necessarily control such as wildfires, climate change and even the ongoing process of the pandemic and political unrest.

As an athlete herself, she has also an intimate knowledge of what competitors go through and can share insight into the "athlete in all of us." Laurie is a licensed marriage and family therapist, board-certified in applied behavior analysis, who leads the successful, Camarillo, CA-based Laurie Singer Behavioral Services, Inc.

Calm your worries and build your bravery — or just relax during a busy day or wind down before bed with William Meyer’s picture book for kids, “Big Breath” and “Healing Breath” A Guided Meditation Through Nature for Kids”.

In this episode you will learn:

  • Why it’s important to teach kids mindfulness and meditation
  • As a parent, where to start with your child
  • The lesson in this pandemic
  • How to start a simple meditation practice
  • 3 Deep breaths is a meditation

All day long, you breathe — in and out, in and out — without even thinking about it. But did you know that you can play with your breath, use it to take you on an adventure? All you have to do is find a comfy spot and close your eyes.

Does your breath sound like ocean waves? Like the wind before a storm or a breeze at the start of spring? Can you feel it all the way down to the tips of your toes? By the time you open your eyes, you might just feel a little lighter, calmer, more relaxed.

Bill Meyer is the author of two adventure chapter books for kids. He’s also written a picture book for kids that leads them through a guided breathing meditation. The book is called, Big Breath. He also published a guide for meditation in the classroom called, Three Breaths and Begin. His latest book published in November 2021 is “Healing Breath” A Guided Meditation for Kids Through Nature. He holds degrees from Dartmouth, Harvard and has a PhD from NYU in Education.

What if you found out your child searched online, “How to kill myself” - what would you do? Every parent MUST hear this interview.

If you know a child, teen or young adult who tried to commit suicide listen to this interview.

According to Baylor college of medicine, an article last November stated, “The pandemic uniquely impacted adolescents. Social isolation, constant uncertainty, stress, and fear have plagued their lives. According to the CDC, teenage emergency room visits for suicide attempts increased significantly during the pandemic, with a 50% rise in cases in females and almost 4% increase in males.”

In this episode you will learn:

  • Be attentive to where your child is spending their time.
  • Be a good role model. Take care of your own mental health. Your child(ren) is learning from watching how you take care of yourself.
  • Questions to ask your child to gauge their mental health state
  • Being vulnerable is powerful
  • Children need a stable relationship with an adult

10 Questions to Ask as Part of a Mental Health Check-In Newport Academy https://www.newportacademy.com

Asking specific questions can help parents perform an accurate mental health check and may also help teens to recognize and manage emotions. Here are 10 emotional check-in questions to ask as part of a mental health temperature check-in:

  1. What three words best describe how you’re feeling right now?
  2. On a scale of 1 to 10, going from negative to positive, what number best describes your state of mind?
  3. Fill in the blank: Something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is…..
  4. If your feelings were weather, what kind of day would it be outside?
  5. If your life was a movie, what songs would be on the soundtrack right now?
  6. What would you like to have less of in your life right now?
  7. What would you like to have more of in your life right now?
  8. Tell me about the best thing and the worst thing that happened to you this week
  9. What’s the hardest part about being you right now?
  10. How can I support you better?

Depending on your teen’s personality and communication style, some of these emotional check-in questions might be more effective than others in eliciting answers.

Don’t you want your child to follow their dreams and seize all the opportunities that life has to offer? Try new things, explore the world, start a new business, fall in love, and become the best possible version of themselves? In order for that to happen, we need to set a good example for them and create an environment where they can thrive!

The problem is - being bold isn’t always easy! Boldness is confidence in action. Take risks. Try something new!

Fred Joyal is an author, speaker, entrepreneur, and business advisor. He co-founded the most successful dentist referral service in the country, 1-800-DENTIST. He has previously written two books on marketing, has dabbled in standup and improv comedy, acted in bad movies and excellent TV commercials. His latest book, Superbold: from Under-confident to Charismatic in 90 days, is an Amazon and Wall Street Journal bestseller. He once beat Sir Richard Branson in chess and was also a question on Jeopardy. He is an avid cyclist, a below-average tennis player and an even worse golfer. He lives in Los Angeles and skipped 2nd grade because he was so smart.

Bold individuals seize life in remarkable, almost unbelievable ways. They succeed in business, in careers, and in love, and they have a great time doing it. Bold people walk up to supermodels and ask them to dance. They stand in front of audiences and tell jokes. They start companies. They run for president.

What surprises most people is that boldness can be taught. Fred Joyal started as an extremely shy person, too timid even to make a phone call, and transformed himself into someone who has done stand-up and improv comedy, spoken to audiences of 5,000, met dozens of celebrities, and, just by being bold, found love, joy, passion, and success.

And he’s here today to teach you how and in this episode you will learn:

  • Fred’s regrets from not being bold early on in life
  • How Fred grew up shy and how his mother did it all wrong
  • Whether we are born with confidence and boldness?
  • The difference between boldness and confidence
  • Tips to enhance social skills right away and how can we use them with kids and teens

“Nobody trains us to do what we do most and that is interact with people.” Fred Joyal

Maya co-authored a book on mindfulness for teens with Dr. Ellen Langer, (Mother of Mindfulness) Harvard Professor of Psychology. “Mindfulness for Middle Schoolers” https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08SPFCSP8/

Maya Maymin lives in New York and has written and published three books and given two lectures on mindfulness, one at a Wolfram Language Summer Camp and another on Harvard Zoom for middle schoolers. She has been working with Dr. Ellen Langer (the Mother of Mindfulness, Psychology Professor at Harvard) for about a year and a half and they wrote a book together on mindfulness for middle schoolers.

You will learn in this episode:

  • What is mindfulness?
  • How Maya got into mindfulness?
  • The purpose of her book, “Mindfulness for Middle Schoolers”
  • What counterforward is
  • The difference between mindful memorization and mindless memorization
  • Examples and exercises to practice mindfulness

“To stop being mindless, start noticing new things. Mindfulness as we study it, is the simple process of actively noticing new things. When you are noticing new things, that puts you in the present, makes you more aware of context, and that active noticing is the essence of engagement. When people are actively noticing, they become more energized. When you are actively noticing and being mindful, people find you more attractive, see you as charismatic, see you as trustworthy.” - Dr. Ellen Langer

In Richard Capriola’s new book, “The Addicted Child” (2020) - he explains substances being used by today's adolescents and the addictions which accompany teen substance abuse, like self-harm and eating disorders. Richard Capriola has been a mental health and addictions counselor for over two decades.

There are very few things more heart-wrenching for a family than having your child addicted to alcohol or drugs. The most dangerous attitude a parent can have is thinking, “It could never happen to my child”.

Richard Capriola is author of, "The Addicted Child" - a parent's guide to adolescent substance abuse. In Non-technical language parents learn how to identify and find treatment programs for their child. You will learn in this book the importance of comprehensive assessments - and what to look for in a counselor to know you're getting the right help.

Learn in this episode:

  • Every child is vulnerable, no matter who they are or what status they have in society, by being captured by substance abuse
  • Warning signs a parent should be aware of
  • Drugs kids are using today and what’s changed last few years
  • How the pandemic has impacted kid’s drug use
  • If I suspect my child is using/abusing, what is the first thing I should do
  • What causes a child to explore or get caught up in marijuana
  • The most dangerous attitude a parent can have is thinking, “It could never happen to my child”

In our busy lives, it’s hard to stop and take a breath and just let things go. Dr. Darlene Mininni is joining me today to tackle the problem of stress and anxiety. Darlene is the author of “The Emotional Toolkit” and Creator of the UCLA undergraduate well-being course - Life Skills. Today we are going to find out how we can start using mindfulness and meditation to reduce stress and how to fit it into your busy schedule wherever you may be.

What we are doing right now is not something that comes naturally to us and it’s no fault of our own, it’s the way our brain is designed. Our brain fills with thoughts of the future to protect us from what if’s. What if I lose my job? And sometimes we focus on the past, things we wish we did differently, or why did he say that to me? And we are rarely focused on this moment, just where we are, and what’s happening.

In order to do that, actually train ourselves to do that, mindfulness or mindfulness meditation is really a brain training program in a sense that will literally rewire the functioning of your brain so that you begin to be more focused on your present moment and exactly what’s happening. It doesn’t mean that you are never going to plan for the future. You are going to take things as you can in the moment. So, the question might be. What difference does doing things in the moment make?

Science is starting to look at what Mindfulness Meditation can do for us. The obvious one is reducing stress.

But it can boost our creativity, enhance our productivity, improve our immune functioning so you are healthier, it decreases your anxiety, depression, you can sleep better, students do better on exams.

There are so many benefits to learning this skill as Jon Kabit Zin says “To just pay attention to what is happening in the present moment and with an attitude of acceptance that you accept whatever is happening as is.

Dr. Darlene Mininni says - “We don’t want to just manage our life, we want to thrive in our life.”

Jon Kabat-Zinn - “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.”

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What if I’m thinking, “Well, I tried it once or even a couple times and nothing happened.” What now?
  • How many minutes a day of practicing this focus on the breath can make a difference.
  • Is there such thing as meditation in action? For when I’m so busy, I don’t have time to sit down and really meditate. What do we think or say to ourselves when we are doing the dishes, folding laundry, etc.
  • What if I have trouble sleeping at night? What can I do?
  • How does mindfulness equal happiness?

Dr. Shannon Ritchey is an Entrepreneur, Founder of Evlo Fitness, Doctor of Physical Therapy and wife. She focuses on creating safe exercise programs for those suffering like she was.

I started listening to her podcast, “Fit Body, Happy Joints” and I LOVE it already. Shannon taught me ways of rethinking my workouts and I love learning from her. I can’t wait to learn more.

I love how she taught me this week not to just do 2-3 really high intensity training workouts and be done thinking I’m good, but to consider doing more consistent workouts that don’t wear my muscles out completely like my intense training days.

She reminded me that there is a narrow window of total number of calories my body will burn in a day. So, just because I exercised more, doesn’t mean I burned more calories. That’s a revolutionary thought for me.

I think you will really enjoy this episode and learn something new and be inspired this week when you think about doing a little exercise. And she even offers virtual classes and a membership to watch the videos on your own time.

She went from working in the area of science to becoming a national speaker on parenting and early childhood topics with her two renegade parenting books: Listen to these titles - “It’s OK Not to Share" and “It’s OK to Go Up the Slide” and Other Renegade Rules for Raising Competent and Compassionate Kids and she is an advocate for free, unstructured play in homes and schools.

On this episode you will learn about:

  • True PLAY is the child’s own ideas bursting out of them.
  • Kids process their thoughts and ideas in a recess time.
  • Play recharges a child’s brain and gives them energy back.

When kids aren’t provided time to play and have those breaks, their memory, focus and problem solving skills and cognitive functions decrease plus their impulse control gets shaky so behavior issues come up. The more recesses they have, the more benefit for them especially kids with ADHD.

The skills that kids need for future jobs are getting along with other people, social interaction, conflict mediation, creativity thinking, flexible thinking and problem solving. When a child plays they develop those skills by playing by themselves and with others.

Reading for pleasure! That does wonders for kids! If a child is struggling to read, allow the adult to read to the child, they learn so much language by being read aloud to.

Sleep improves memory, problem-solving and behavior.

We need to be teaching kids 5-6 years old, skills of play to get along with others and follow their own ideas and develop connections in their brain, so their brains are ready at age 7 for academic learning.

Stress and anxiety is something we’re all familiar with but what if some of that was actually inherited. Today’s guest is Dr. Valerie Rein and she has used the science of epigenetics to discover how stress and trauma from previous generations is affecting us today.

Her new book, “Patriarchy Stress Disorder: The Invisible Inner Barrier to Women’s Happiness and Fulfillment”, looks at the research behind this reality and provides tools for identifying and managing intergenerational stress. Today, she’s here to talk about how this works in our lives and how we can identify and overcome it.

She covers:

  • What Patriarchy Stress Disorder is and how she discovered it
  • How this is something that we are passing along in our family
  • An example of how this plays out in our everyday life
  • Free tools in a starter kit available for download on her website https://www.drvalerie.com/
  • The role of fitness in overcoming PSD

Dr. Valerie Rein is a psychologist and women’s mental health expert who has discovered Patriarchy Stress Disorder® (PSD) and created the only science-backed system for helping women achieve their ultimate success, happiness, and fulfillment by healing this collective, generational trauma of oppression.

She holds an EdM in Psychological Counseling from Columbia University and a PhD in Psychology from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. Her #1 Amazon bestselling book, “Patriarchy Stress Disorder: The Invisible Inner Barrier to Women’s Happiness and Fulfillment” has been heralded by reviewers as "the most important body of literary work of our modern times" and "perhaps the most important book of the century for women."

Dr. Valerie’s cutting-edge programs have helped thousands of women shift from “How much can I bear?” to “How good can it get?", from survival to thriving, in their work and personal lives.

When a woman makes this dramatic shift, she changes not only her life and destiny, she changes the world. She creates a new precedent of what's possible, the new normal, and she brings everyone with her.

The movement of healing generational, collective and personal trauma is about how good can it get? -- for everyone. Profound changes we need to see in the world are made possible by profound personal changes that this healing unlocks.

Healing trauma restores our authentic power--to create the life and the world we desire, in conscious connection and collaboration with one another and the planet that's only possible when we're in a state of Thriving, not surviving.

We're here to heal for this and future generations and to honor and bring healing to the generations before us.

Heather Forbes, LCSW is one of the nation’s leading experts in the world of Trauma-Informed Education. Heather has worked for over 20 years helping to educate both teachers and parents in the area of using a trauma-informed approach to help student’s academic and behavioral health.

She is author of “Help For Billy” and her newest book, “Classroom 180”.

Heather’s work stems from her own experiences after adopting two children from Russia.

“School environments are designed for children who have their natural love for learning intact and for children whose systems are hardwired to be able to sit in a classroom and stay focused. But when a child comes along who does not fit this description, we have continued to EXPECT this child to change and to fit into this predetermined mold, no matter how much he or she is unable.” - Heather helps us unpack with this happens and what parents and educators can do.

Heather helps us understand how we keep “high expectations for our kids” and yet help them when they display challenging behaviors.

“The amount of pressure students are asked to handle in academic environments frequently goes far beyond what their nervous systems are equipped to handle. Staying at this heightened level of stress diminishes their abilities to self-regulate and their abilities to learn.” - Heather Forbes

We talk in this interview about motivation, and Heather likes to exchange that word for ‘inspiration’. How are we inspiring our kids to learn? And if kids are inspired to learn, they put forth the motivation to learn.

Terri Kozlowski helps us understand that children are born unafraid and how to keep them fearless.

Terri Kozlowski lives in Georgia and just published her first book “Raven Transcending Fear” in February which is part memoir, part self-help book.

It's her raw and personal story of childhood abuse and diving deep into her terror before ultimately getting comfortable with fear and transcending it.

Though Terri had loving people in her life, her mother was abusive and enabled others to traumatize her. To get drugs, her mother allowed strangers to assault her 11-year-old body sexually. She then left her and her sister alone on the streets of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Terri’s childhood left her filled with fear until she embarked on a spiritual journey and learned the skills of empowerment, which have allowed her to transcend the fear and regain a connection with the Divine.

Everyone is born fearless and knowing who they are and what their purpose is.

However, life experience or abuse may instill fear and break the connection with our authentic selves. Through this memoir, readers will go on the journey with her as Terri moves from a life ruled by fear to fearlessness.

Terri shares with us why she believes "Children aren't our possessions."

We all come to this earth knowing who we are, knowing who we are authentically meant to be and have a purpose in life. Then, we come into the unknown...our family. There is something our family is here to teach us.

Terri is married with a son and grandchild, discovered her Native American Alaskan roots and is a passionate certified life coach, empowerment coach, and artist.

She suffered childhood trauma of abuse and her hope is that as she retells her story through her podcast “Soul Solutions” it will give you courage to embark on your own healing journey - One that transcends fear and returns you to your authentic self. And bring you Back to the realization that you’re worthy and have limitless potential.

A few months ago, I hosted a virtual book club for a month with teachers and parents. We read and discussed four chapters in Dr. Borba’s book called “Thrivers” - The Surprising Reasons Why Some Kids Struggle and Others Shine. Including 7 Teachable skills that set happy, healthy, high-performing Kids Apart.

We read about: Self-Confidence, Empathy, Self-Control and Optimism.

And...Dr. Borba joined us for one of our meetings and answered our questions. I thought you would love to hear this one of a kind interview with her. We loved having her join us!

The book club was amazing. Teachers and parents were sharing their insights around the chapters we discussed. We were inspired by each other. We found a place where we could share, learn and grow together. There was something really special about it. I loved it so much, I’m going to launch another book club in the next few months. Stay tuned if you are interested to join me.

Do you ever wish you knew the right questions to ask at a parent teacher conference? What if Parent Teacher Conferences were comfortable and easy for you and you walked out feeling really great about your child and their progress in school? Wouldn't you love if someone gave you questions to ask your child’s teacher? When things are going well and when things may be a little rocky. Well, I have just the answer for you!

Dr. Ray Queener recently retired as Superintendent in Minnesota and is one of few superintendents who was never a school principal. He’s a father of three, and likes to hunt, fish, golf and read. Currently, Dr. Queener is a senior consultant for Teamworks International, a coaching company for school and district administrators. Today he is on our podcast because he knows exactly what’s it like when you have to meet with a teacher for a regular parent teacher conference and maybe when you have to meet under not the greatest of circumstances.

I invited him on our show today to help you the next time you have a meeting with your child’s teacher. Maybe you get an email from your child’s teacher saying they want to meet with you and your heart skips a beat? What happened? What did my child do? Or, maybe you have parent conferences coming up and you are secretly dreading it. Well, after talking to Dr. Queener, he was sharing with me ways to think about and plan for your parent conference that I think might help you know what to say to your child’s teacher in a conference, questions to ask to get the results you both want: your child to be successful, thrive, grow, love school and to become life long learner!

Imagine a world filled with people pain-free with mental illness, anxiety, depression and psychosis a thing of the past. Medical illness is reduced. Medication use is minimized. Dr. Gominak believes, “See your doctor once a year, heal your body every night.

The world epidemic of sleep disorders AND MORE is linked to Vitamin D deficiency!

Dr. Gominak also says that autism is linked to insufficient deep sleep.

The global struggle with worsening sleep is linked to reduced sun exposure, says Dr. Gominak.

"See your doctor once a year. Heal your body every night." - Dr. Gominak

Given back enough time in deep sleep and the necessary raw materials (D and B vitamins) the brain can make up for the deep sleep that it missed and develop normal social skills even into the teens and early 20’s.

Not a morning person? Dr. Gominak says that’s due to a sleep disorder.

Family Doctor, and TedX Talk presenter on, "Emotional Literacy for Better Mental Health," Dr. Alibhai is known as a "Community Healer."

Dr. Alibhai's parents escaped Uganda as refugees and started their new life in Canada.

She took classes at night at the young age of 16 and became a certified fitness instructor.

But, like each of us...she has a story.

After completing her residency in Family Medicine and birthing her first son, the stressors of life caught up with her as much as she knew a lot about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She found herself at rock bottom suffering with postpartum anxiety and feeling alone.

In her Ted Talk she mentions that we know all to well how to run ourselves down by saying we should be doing something we are not. And we listen to that internal dialogue running in our mind. The all too familiar negative self talk and just feel frustrated and guilty.

Dr. Alibhai leaves us with the phrase she heard from the Toms shoe owner, Blake Mycoskie, "I AM ENOUGH."

This week stop and reflect on these three simple words. When I started to say to myself, "I am enough." My thoughts about myself began to change. Wow! What a powerful statement! How many times do we think,

"I need to work out more."

"I need to eat more healthy."

"I need to stop..."

"I need to do more of..."

"I need more..."

Catch yourself this week, and say to yourself, "You know what? I am enough."

After 40 years in education, all of a sudden Cindy Mann felt alone.

She shares, “It is by stopping to breathe, that I am now on freedom’s road to great beauty, joy and gratefulness. All it took was to allow my spirit the time and space to seek freedom and peace.”

You can read more of her story at

https://lovinglivesde.com/

Cindy shares, “I hope you take me up on the adventure of mindfulness and meditation. Life is full of miracles, but we must take time to experience them."

In her book, The Gift of Years – Growing Older Gracefully, Joan Chittister states, “It is fear of getting older that plagues us. Instead of seeing a long life as a gateway to the flowering of the spirit, the growing of the soul, we are far more likely in a culture geared toward movement and dexterity, physical beauty and public achievement, to see it as the coming of a wasteland.”

Isabella Elliot and Emily Gallo - Meditation got them through 2020! Two seniors at Padua Academy in Wilmington, Delaware share their story of how their life changed the day they walked into Mr. Shelton’s Physics class where he begins each class with 3 minutes of silence. And they say every classroom in the US should start this way.

Isabella, a senior, believes that people in our society struggle with creating these positive thoughts and finding peace with themselves and one another. If more people meditated she believes our society would be more open-minded and people would be able to live more freely.

“Having meditation and mindfulness techniques truly helped me calm down the emotions that filled my body.” - Isabella Elliot

Emily, also a senior, wrote her Junior Research Paper on how meditation would be beneficial for students if implemented into classrooms nationwide. As a society, she shares, we definitely struggle with finding love within ourselves and within others, and she believes if more people meditated, society would become more peaceful and relationships would be stronger.

“Most importantly, I am grateful for the gift of mindfulness during this stressful year. Meditation genuinely got me through 2020. It helped me learn how to treat others, understanding that they are going through the same, if not a worse situation.” - Emily Gallo

Dr. Gold is a Pediatrician specializing in the area of infants and families. She is the director of the ‘Hello It’s Me Project,’ a community project in Western Massachusetts which teaches doctors and practitioners through her course how to support parent infant relationships in rural communities with high needs and low resources through her methodology and research.

In her book, “The Silenced Child,” Dr. Gold shares how behind every troublesome behavior there is always a story crying to be heard.

Dr. Gold’s hope is to empower parents to learn more about their child from the minute they are born and how to watch, observe and learn what your child needs. Listen how Dr. Gold explains how to take a stance of wonder and curiosity asking yourself, “What is this behavior really about?” and being respectful of what your child is bringing.

Dr. Gold shares with us how children are being silenced and their development stunted in the age of quick diagnosis and overmedication. In her book, ‘The Silenced Child’ she shows the tremendous power of listening in promoting growth and healing. Have you ever heard of Emery’s Thunder Run to raise funds for cancer? The 3,100 mile coast to coast run across the U. S. is designed to raise awareness about Neuroblastoma, a cancer affecting children that is extremely challenging to successfully fight and one that is grossly underfunded when it comes to research.

Peter Halper is that crazy runner, Emery’s great uncle, on our show today to share, “The strongest compelling desire that motivates me in running is that the hurting, those that I run for, will feel even the faintest whisper of “I am seen,” says Peter Halper.

Running has become my whisper to them and their parents. My way of saying “I see you” and I am doing all that I can to help.

Join me on this Random Acts of Kindness week as we give back to this very special foundation.
