Sometimes our humanness can distract us from Jesus. All of our constructs of religion, culture or politics can become so important to us that they can obstruct our vision of Christ; or we may attempt wrap Jesus within these constructs and wind up loosing him within. This week, we look at Paul's approach to addressing the people in Corinth when first sharing the Gospel: preaching Christ and Him crucified. Hearing of Christ and Him crucified is our first introduction to God's Power, and a simple reminder that we all need right now.

Scars can be revealing. They reveal times of trial and change. But, a scar is also a testament of survival and endurance. The scars of the cross that the Resurrected Christ bears are a testament of our redemption. In the breaking there is pain, but, there is also hope, growth, strength and light. As we continue through the Christmas Season on our way to Epiphany, we are reminded that Jesus came at the fulfillment of God's time; that our salvation had come fully under God's direction. And when that time was fulfilled, we see the marveled reactions of a prophet and devout believer, both in the temple courts as Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to be presented at the temple. In God's time they had seen the Messiah, and in God's time redemption had come to all people. May we pause on our way to epiphany and marvel at the child who was born, who has saved and redeemed everyone, in perfect fulfillment of God's time.

What great joy those shepherds experienced as the angles proclaimed Jesus' birth; a joy that could not be ignored nor contained. The shepherds not only went to see that which the angels told them, they shared the news from those angels with all who would listen. What great joy and excitement comes as we see God's promises be fulfilled!

The beginning of the Christmas Story as found in the gospel of Luke begins with a decree from Cesar and a record of who governed Syria. These first three verses are usually seen as historical reference and to set the stage for Jesus' birth, but perhaps these three verses help tell a deeper story than just when and how Jesus was born. Perhaps they help illustrate that it doesn't matter what decrees are set by human tongues or what circumstances may arise; that God works the good of all, in His time, and His time supersedes all else.

The first week of advent we light the candle of hope. Hope; something we all need through our traversal of life and something we have all been searching for throughout this past year. As we begin this season of Advent and preparation of Christmas, celebrating the arrival of God's fulfilled promise in Jesus, may we remember the promise of a return and live into the hope of that promise to come.

This is Christ the King Sunday, the final Sunday of the Christian calendar with Advent marking the start of a new year. It is fitting that the "end of the christian year" corresponds with Thanksgiving, as we designate time to consider all of God's mercies of the past year and proclaim thankfulness and gratitude to our King before entering the season of Advent and Christmas. Yet we are reminded today that our King has set a great example for us, and expects certain things of us, that our devotion to Him would exude peace and generosity.

Our God is the God who provides, through difficult times and even when it seems that we can take care of our selves. Through provision God confirms His covenant with us, therefore we must not forget our God, all the good He has done and all the bad He has brought us through. Remember and honor our God in all times of life, and give thanks for His abundant provision.

This week we celebrate a special time in our church known as the Children's Sabbath, where parents present a bible to their 3rd graders, promise to provide a home for the family to grow in their faith together, and the congregation commits to supporting these families. This is a weekend about children knowing that they have a place in God's Kingdom.

Jubilee is a time when debts are forgiven and property restored, a celebration and holy year that culminates seven cycles of seven sabbatical years; holy years that would likewise cancel debts and free indentured servants. These years of Jubilee marked a new beginning for God's people. This week, Pastor Allan discusses this old practice and a Jubilee that our church hopes to have.

No one has ever said that forgiveness was easy, let alone forgiving multiple offenses, but that is exactly what Jesus tells us to do. If we want to see the Kingdom of God made visible in our midst, then we begin with a compassion that breeds joy and freedom. We forgive more often that we can count, regardless how immense the transgression, not because we are told to but because that is exactly how God forgives us.

Many of us take pride in where we are from, the schools we attended or the sports teams we cheer for, and we represent those people, places or groups; we show proof of that pride. And when we hear someone say "represent the family," we know they imply reflecting the morals and values of that family. But do we show proof of our love for God? Is our love for God so strong that we are unburdened by His commands or that our love for others is a natural and overwhelming reflection of our love for Him? So, do we represent the Family?
