David made headlines when he announced that Basecamp & HEY would be leaving the cloud (AWS and Google Cloud) and moving back on-premises (colo). This decision was motivated by many concerns, the primary driver is that they expect to save a significant amount of money. David also made the point that cloud was supposed to simplify things and it did not, there is increased complexity in managing cloud.

In our conversation, David shares his thoughts on the benefits and drawbacks of cloud computing, and why he believes that companies should have more control over their own infrastructure. He also discusses the challenges of making the transition away from the cloud, and what he has learned from the experience.
