Welcome to another episode of Death Don’t Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It’s April, so that means it’s time for our “No EscApril” series, where we celebrate the wonder of thrillers! Not quite horror, not quite action, that sweet spot in the middle where danger is afoot, and lives are still on the line! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and guest K-Tron discuss Brian De Palma’s 1984 entry in the “pro-peeping tom propaganda” subgenre, Body Double!
Excessive voyeurism! Open disdain for subtlety! Inept cops! A hotdog-shaped hotdog store! A bizarre and touchy acting class/therapy session! Troy McClure's weird Chemosphere house from The Simpsons! An insane Frankie Goes To Hollywood music video in the middle of the movie! Hide and seek-related trauma! A claustrophobic sardine who can't scream! A platinum blonde 80s vampire! Motion sickness-inducing bed drinking! A blatantly labeled door! Cultural insensitivity! A dizzying and confusing makeout session! A disturbing drill with a surprisingly short power cord! The Gone with the Wind of adult films! A random Nostromo hat from Alien! R-rated end credits! Rear projection and matte paintings! Great cinematography and camerawork, including several split diopter shots! An excellent musical score from Pino Donaggio! A fun cast that includes Dennis Franz, Barbara Crampton in her first role, Craig Wasson being convincingly pervy, and a fearless Melanie Griffith! All that and more in this unapologetically 80s thriller that explores the seedy underbelly of Hollywood, and may be the pinnacle of HitchSchlock!
In addition, Tim recommends Sam Raimi’s Send Help, K-Tron discusses the trippy 1961 film The Mask, while Alex gives his spoiler-free thoughts on Lee Cronin's The Mummy, the new Faces of Death, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and the Netflix shark thriller Thrash!

Embarrassingly bad screams! Chekhov's scream! Abundant split diopter shots split screens! A movie within a movie! A realistic college experience! Liberty Bell-based festivities! A car racing through a parade! A hitman who maybe enjoys his job a little too much! Artistic stabbing! Original music that Quentin Tarantino reused in Death Proof! A tense accident scene with a wonderful Jaws-style jumpscare! Questionable concussion protocol! Government corruption! Everpresent smoking! Excessive Ben Franklin! An incredibly strong audio cable! Possibly the least subtle shot in movie history involving an American flag! A sleep-deprived John Travolta using analog sound tech to play Sound Detective while wearing fingerless Sound Gloves! All that and more in this stylish thriller that also features a murderable Nancy Allen, an evil John Lithgow, and Dennis Franz as a creepy slob!

In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Chrissy Kurpeski discuss the other Mars exploration movie from the year 2000, Red Planet!
Cool space suits! Early thousand's internet culture! Forced acronyms! Some of the most explosions you've ever seen on Mars! Low gravity bathroom breaks! Fiery, homicidal bugs! Charmingly outdated VFX! An out of place trip hop soundtrack! One of the same writers as Virus and Barb Wire! Fun miniature effects! Zero gravity fire! Life-saving algebra! A flexi-screen IBM tablet! A whimsical Russian space mascot! Extreme efforts to terraform a dead planet when they could be fixing Earth! A behind-the-scenes feud between two actors! A great cast that includes Benjamin Bratt, a wasted Terence Stamp, Carrie-Anne Moss relegated to a single filming location, Val Kilmer playing a character (possibly) named after a prop comic, Tom Sizemore as a scientist who might not know what he's doing, and Simon Baker is there too! All that and more in this movie that may deserve its fairly negative reputation!

Welcome to another episode of Death Don’t Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we’re continuing our new “Fast February” series, where we cover the movies that made Vin Diesel a star and taught the world to live their lives one quarter mile at a time, The Fast & Furious franchise! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Bill Mueller discuss 2003’s awkward attempt to recapture the magic of the surprisingly successful first movie, 2 Fast 2 Furious!
An incredible title! Those silly visor hats! Pepsi and NOS product placement! Trying to pick up girls during a dangerous undercover mission! A Sound Designer-approved audio mix! Loud, somewhat gaudy visuals thanks to that clumsy early thousands aesthetic! A possible influence on the Wachowskis' Speed Racer movie! A larger budget but a less tangible story with somehow even cringier lines! A third act you'll barely remember! The introduction of characters who would go on to be staples of the series! John Singleton trying his hand at directing a silly blockbuster! Race obstacles that would lead to expensive automotive repairs! A great car jump stunt that's wasted due to poor editing and unnecessary visual effects! A cast that includes a returning Paul Walker, James Remar, Eva Mendes, a pre-Yellowstone Cole Hauser, Mark Boone Junior, Devon Aoki, Ludacris, and Tyrese Gibson starting out as somewhat of a Dom Toretto wannabe before finding his character as the movie goes on! The entry of the series with possibly the least sense of "family," you never realized you could miss Vin Diesel so much!
In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Crime 101, Psycho Killer, and the original Hunger Games quadrilogy!

Welcome to another episode of Death Don’t Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we’re kicking off our “Fast February” series, where we cover the movies that made Vin Diesel a star and taught the world to live their lives one quarter mile at a time, The Fast & Furious franchise! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Bill Mueller discuss the one that started it all, 2001’s The Fast and the Furious!
Limp Bizkit! Ja Rule! Cheesy lines! Chunky boots that would make Guy Fieri jealous! A fittingly quick and entertaining pace! Recognizable Los Angeles locations! Questionable car talk! Exciting new home video technology! Legally purchased DVD players! Overheated manifolds! Reckless contempt for carpooling! Shockingly organized crowds of young, illegal street racers! A guy playing guitar at a party! Product placement for Pizza Hut, Corona, and most-notably, the nitrous oxide brand NOS! A great high-speed heist to open the movie and plenty of (mostly) real stunts and action! Occasional surreal, anime-influenced racing scenes years before the Speed Racer movie came out! A versatile cast of young actors on the verge of stardom, including Vin Diesel with a rare shred of humility, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez laying the foundation for one of cinema's most iconic female action heroes, and Matt Schulze making the most of his very punchable face! A 2001 time capsule which may have borrowed heavily from Point Break, but still has great chemistry between the two leads with some impressive world building and story mechanics, and would surprisingly go on to become one of the biggest and most influential action franchises in movie history!
In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Spring Breakers, The Beekeeper, Lucio Fulci’s dance-themed giallo Murder Rock, and Sam Raimi’s return to horror, Send Help!

Welcome to another episode of Death Don’t Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It’s January, so that means it’s time for our “Uncannuary” series! Where we cover movies that feature superheroes or vigilantes, either adapted from comics or created specifically for the big screen! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Matt Naughton discuss Pamela Anderson’s somewhat infamous adaptation of the Dark Horse Comics anti-hero, Barb Wire!
Heroic partial nudity! Conveniently-placed bubbles! Near-lethal stilettos! Great hero shots and abundant aura farming! Awkward and inconsistent narration! Disturbing cybernetic bikini torture! A blowgun disguised as a cigarette! A motorcycle with missiles! A club full of goths and gangsters! Several discussions about contact lenses! Shocking mockery of the obese and the blind community! Possibly the strangest Casablanca remake you've ever seen! Surprisingly decent stunts and chase scenes, including a climactic aerial battle! An interesting cast that includes Udo Kier in a silly wig, Lifeforce's Steve Railsback, Temuera Morrison, Xander Berkeley, Jack Noseworthy, Clint Howard, Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr., Victoria Rowell from Dumb & Dumber, and a committed Pamela Anderson as a slightly hotter Snake Plissken/Tom Cody-style hero doing spin kicks and shooting guns in black leather and high heels! Sleazy 90's vibes! A mile a minute pace! Satan Claus! Goons in sunglasses! $650 pants! An iconic celebratory jig! Football that's somehow even more dangerous than usual! A stadium with a secret hangout and fireplace! A surprisingly loud, public, and messy "professional" assassination! A guy with the name Joe Hallenbeck who has actually seemingly gone to hell and back! Behind the scenes friction that inspired a character in True Romance! A great musical score from Lethal Weapon & Die Hard's Michael Kamen! A cast that includes a young Halle Berry, Damon Wayans, Danielle Harris, Taylor Negron, and Bruce McGill! A shot of excessive violence and entertainment that's effectively a who's who of 90s action cinema with Tony Scott's visually stunning direction, Joel Silver producing, Shane Black writing endless one liners, and Bruce Willis delivering one of the greatest cigarette-smoking performances of all time!

In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and guest Tony Sedani discuss Brandon Lee’s 1992 fusion of American and Hong Kong-style action movies, Rapid Fire!
Bowling-related gun violence! A mild electrocution! Cops in suits! Goons with sunglasses! Characters cranked up to 11! A restaurant with an emergency mounted machine gun! An undercover operation in a bowling alley! Seedy Chicago locations! A shirtless running shot that may have inspired Michael Bay's Bad Boys! A very 90s musical score from the prolific Christopher Young, plus hair metal songs from the band Hardline! Impressive action set pieces that pay homage to Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan while affecting how action would be handled in movies to this very day! A cast of character actors that includes Al Leong, Tzi Ma, François Chau, a brief Richard Schiff cameo, and Powers Boothe in a rare good guy role! Brandon Lee doing a brief Clark Kent impression and delivering a charismatic performance that shows he could've been one of cinema’s greatest action stars if given the chance!

Checkov's donuts! Truck-based CrossFit! A surprisingly explosive car! Vehicular drama with chills and thrills! Jeep Grand Cherokee product placement! Themes of consumerism and classism! Great, terrifyingly-believable villains! A title with multiple meanings! Jaw-dropping stunts! An incredible score from Basil Poledouris! Unbelievable, paranoia-inducing locations! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt kick off the series by discussing another film set on that mysterious and alluring red planet, Brian De Palma’s frequently maligned and weirdly-positive space adventure, Mission to Mars!
Ancient Aliens, baby! A NASA barbeque! A horny astronaut! Unconvincing science jargon! Weird space organ music from Ennio Morricone! The terror of micrometeoroids! Computer-generated Zero G fluids! Amazing use of a rotating set! Space Van Halen! Casual reactions to a deadly space twister! Solid visual effects for its time! The DNA model for an “ideal woman” made out of candy! A script from the writers of Predator and Speed! A solid cast with good chemistry, including Tim Robbins, Don Cheadle, Connie Nielsen, Jerry O'Connell, and Gary Sinise with weird wispy bangs! A surprisingly positive story about the human spirit and space travel that’s almost an optimistic version of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, with Brian De Palma bringing his trademark knack for suspense and crazy camera moves!

Welcome to another episode of Death Don’t Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we’re celebrating “Dreddruary,” where we cover movies based on the British comic book character, Judge Dredd! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Sylvester Stallone’s misguided 1995 schlockfest, Judge Dredd!
Recycled food! Bedazzled codpieces! Distracting lifts! A cool, creepy cyborg! A shockingly sneaky, giant robot! Lethal holograms! Futuristic court drama! Stylish garbs of justice designed by Gianni Versace! A strong score by Predator’s Alan Silvestri and cinematography by Aliens’ Adrian Biddle! An original song from The Cure! A surprisingly faithful comic adaptation in every way except for the lead character! A visual treat with incredible production design, animatronics, and visual effects, including one of the greatest fictional mega cities in cinema! A solid cast that includes James Remar (briefly), Armand Assante, Max von Sydow, Diane Lane, Rob Schneider unfortunately, and Sylvester Stallone’s ego derailing the movie! Dark themes of police corruption and eugenics in this silly movie that maybe works better as a disappointing sequel to Demolition Man, from a frustrated director who loved both the source material and apparently Blade Runner!
In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Captain America: Brave New World, Oz Perkins’ new horror comedy, The Monkey, and the final nail in the Sonyverse coffin, Kraven the Hunter!

This February we’re celebrating “Dreddruary,” where we cover movies based on the British comic book character, Judge Dredd! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Karl Urban’s 2012 dark dystopian action massacre, Dredd!
Impressive use of a low budget! A near-future that seems (unfortunately) believable! Quick and effective world-building! Really cool helmets! A very dangerous atrium! A simple, contained story inspired by the action classic, The Raid! A surprisingly stripped-down comic book movie, especially when compared with modern examples! Absolutely brutal slow motion violence! Absurdly large buildings! A solid cast that includes Olivia Thirlby, Wood Harris, Harry Potter’s Domhnall Gleeson with blue cyber eyes, an uncomfortably cruel Lena Headey, and the lower half of Karl Urban’s face doing some of the greatest frown-acting you’ve ever seen! A movie based on a British comic book about America, starring European people doing American accents, which may also secretly be the first movie directed by Civil War’s Alex Garland!
In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on The Wolf of Snow Hollow, the new Valentine’s Day-themed slasher, Heart Eyes, and the genre-bending thriller Companion!

In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Billy Zane’s foray into the 90s pulp hero craze, The Phantom!
Female-dominated sky piracy! Barely noticeable stock footage of wild animals! A confusing purple costume that looks both great and kind of silly! Disappearing eye makeup! A movie that feels like a Universal Studios stunt show! A ring laser! A skull laser! A shark moat! A deadly microscope! A wolf being best friends with a horse! A murderous, non-threatening skeleton! An impressive cast that includes Billy Zane starting the "getting ripped for a superhero movie" trend, James Remar, Kristy Swanson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and a comically evil Treat Williams! An adaptation of the first superhero to wear a skin-tight suit and a mask with solid white eyes! A fairly authentic recreation of pulpy, swashbuckling adventure serials that would make a great double feature with Alec Baldwin’s The Shadow!
In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man, the bizarre Robbie Williams biopic, Better Man, and the under-the-radar gem, Hundreds of Beavers!

Insane city sets and miniatures! Fun SFX and VFX! Amusing face prosthetics that make Alec Baldwin look like his brother William! A celebration of 1930s art deco style! Mind control! Crazy eyes! Cultural appropriation and weird, long fingernails! A heroic opium baron? A whole bunch of split diopter shots! Face-removal nightmares! Mid-conversation sponsored ads for Brooks Brothers! Checkov's color blindness! A creepy, living knife! A giant, hidden building! Secret passages, mirror hall fights, and trap floors! A wonderful score from Jerry Goldsmith! Kinetic direction from Highlander's Russell Mulcahy! A committed cast that includes a less-old-looking Ian McKellen, a sweaty Tim Curry, the dad from Alf, and John Lone! All that and more in this campy post-Batman '89 pulp hero adventure that was seemingly influenced by its own homages, such as Sam Raimi's Darkman!

In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Joe Dante’s 1984 creature-feature/Christmas fable, Gremlins!
An unforgettable kitchen massacre! Intensely-80s Christmas vibes! People being oddly okay with strange, previously-unknown animals! A horribly-evil old landlady that’ll change the way you look at stair lifts forever! Tons of fake snow! A town square that uses the same Universal Studios backlot as Hill Valley from Back to the Future! An absentee father leaving his supportive family to deal with dangerous creatures while they attempt to use his useless inventions! Questionable carolers and bar patrons! Small creatures flashing and flash dancing! A great musical score from Jerry Goldsmith! A Solid cast that includes Mike from Breaking Bad, Dick Miller promoting the value of American-made products, and a quasi-goth Phoebe Cates as the ultimate holiday buzzkill! A movie with a truly unique tone that somehow feels like a horror movie for kids, featuring iconic creature FX and puppetry from Chris Walas!

It’s November, so that means it’s time for our “Xenovember” series, where we cover movies involving otherworldly creatures! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the divisive 1999 techo-alien nightmare on water, Virus!
Splitting headaches! Amusingly-dated 90s computer tech! Flirty chess foreplay! Unconvincing use of nautical terminology! Convenient escape chutes! A fast paced opening! A scene that was possibly referenced in 2022’s Moonfall? FleshTech Borganisms! Casual reactions to horrible sights that would make Pinhead blush! An interesting (though occasionally miscast or uncommitted) cast that includes Jamie Lee Curtis, William Baldwin, an underused Cliff Curtis, the guy with Kuato growing out of him from Total Recall, a scene-stealing Sherman Augustus, and Donald Sutherland making one of the fastest greed-induced descents into madness you’ve ever seen! Impressive practical FX and animatronics, plus CGI overseen by the legendary Phil Tippett! A compelling argument against wireless technology with topical commentary on humans destroying the planet! All that and more in a film the lead actor claims is the worst movie ever made!
In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on the new Canadian psychological thriller, Red Rooms, Gaspar Noé’s Climax, and Zoe Saldana’s new musical crime dramedy, Emilia Pérez!

In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss John Carpenter’s 1982 Lovecraftian nightmare on ice, The Thing!
An iconic opening title sequence! Frozen bloodcicles! A cast of actors that seem like real people! Locations, sound, and lighting that actually make you feel colder while you watch! Norwegian characters giving away the plot! A surprising nose piercing! Very gross body horror mixed with suspense and mystery! A high watermark for practical creature FX thanks to the legendary Rob Bottin! The first movie in Carpenter’s “Apocalypse Trilogy!” One of the great remakes of the 80s, alongside The Fly and The Blob! A frequently-debating ending that’s fun to theorize about, or enjoy as it is! A claustrophobic sense of dread, paranoia, and fear, brought to horrible life by a classic score by Ennio Morricone and John Carpenter himself! You’ll never look at blood tests and defibrillators the same way again!

In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt are joined by one of the hosts of the Mystery Movie Madness podcast, K-Tron, to discuss Fred Dekker and Shane Black’s unofficial prequel to Universal’s Dark Universe, 1987’s The Monster Squad!
A surprisingly cool middle schooler wearing loafers and smoking! Incredible creature FX from Stan Winston! Classic horror vibes that showcase the glory of unofficial versions of the Universal Monsters! 12 year old boys endangering their sisters because they’re insecure about their masculinity! A 2,000 year old dead guy walking around on his own! A dog somehow sneaking into a (really cool) tree house! A deeply-80s music montage and end-credits theme song! The origin of classic horror movie references such as “Wolfman's got nards!” and “Stephen King Rules!” Frankenstein's Monster being a bro! Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite! Rooftop Burger King! A shockingly-petty immortal screaming at children and spitefully destroying their property! A fun horror romp with a great concept that plays out like a slightly-more-adult Amblin movie! Were you a The Goonies kid, or a The Monster Squad kid?!
In addition, the gang shares some brief spoiler-free reviews of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, 1962’s Tales of Terror, Terrifier 3, Smile 2, and Timo Tjahjanto’s newest gory action-masterpiece, The Shadow Strays!

A medicine cabinet full of body parts! Horny gymnastics! Seducing women by showing off your Telepod collection! Science making Jeff Goldblum even sexier than he already is! Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis not only turning in two of their best performances, but also documenting their real-life relationship in an incredibly bizarre way! John Getz as an oddly-endearing scumbag! Someone saying the word “flesh” a lot! Love in the face of intense goopiness! Arm-wrestling that puts Over the Top to shame! David Cronenberg cameoing as a gynecologist! An incredible, but frustratingly-messy loft apartment! Unforgettable FX from Gremlins-designer Chris Walas! One of the few perfect remakes of the 1980s, that also captures the struggle between art and love, in a movie that’s effectively a dark, alternate take on Spider-Man! Be afraid, be very afraid!

Cloud fondling! Pizza printers! A dive bar full of human bones! A rich person’s underground lair that includes a surgery igloo! Kinetic camera work and shocking violence! A great score! Logan Marshall-Green being surprisingly funny while showing off his incredible robot dance moves and making you wonder why he’s not a bigger star! Thumbs up fist bumps! Little Padawan braids! Geopolitical conflict resolution via mech-fighting! Flying futuristic referees! An overwhelming jumpsuit/onesie budget! Futuristic bars! The potential dangers of mech-fighting as a spectator sport! Subtle hints about the poor state of education in a post-apocalyptic future! Rocket hands! Shockingly disturbing PG violence! A chef who specializes in robot recipes! Special effects that were almost too ambitious for their own good! A movie that not only seemingly influenced Pacific Rim and Edge of Tomorrow, but is also kinda Rocky IV with giant robots! Crash and burn!

Dino DNA! Velociraptors! A charismatic T-Rex! Impressive leg muscles! Fantastic park design that makes you want to disregard any danger and buy yourself a ticket! A reluctant father figure terrifying small children for fun! Shaky jello! A disappearing neckerchief! Surprising use of a shaving cream can! One of John Williams’ greatest scores! A wonderful cast that includes Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Richard Attenborough, BD Wong, Wayne Knight, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jeff Goldblum originating an iconic internet meme! Incredible animatronics from Stan Winston, and pioneering VFX from Industrial Light & Magic! One of the greatest blockbusters of all time, full of thrills and moments of horror, that harkens back to one of Steven Spielberg’s first films and the original blockbuster, Jaws! Is The Fabelmans a spiritual prequel to Jurassic Park, showing the seductive nature of connection through spectacle, a lesson which John Hammond learns the hard way?!

A fun viral marketing campaign! Spreading gossip at the expense of others! Endangering your friends for love! Crooked apartments! Unexpected Garfield fandom! The best music, mobile phone technology, and “indie sleaze” fashion 2008 had to offer! A strong cast of actors who were fairly unknown at the time, including Lizzy Caplan, Odette Annable, and T.J. Miller! A brisk pace with efficient storytelling and situational character development! A kaiju movie shot entirely from the POV of everyday people! A legitimately good-looking and effective found footage movie, with believable and well-integrated VFX, that’s full of surprises and scares!

It’s June, so that means it’s time for the AIPT Movies podcast’s “Junesis” series! Where we cover movies based on/revolving around video games! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt are joined by artist and friend Chrissy Kurpeski to discuss Edward Furlong’s unfortunate run-in with a fictional video game, 1994’s Brainscan!
A fantastic concept with mixed results! Excessive milk drinking! A lovable musical motif that works no matter how often it’s overused! A very non-slashery slasher with a script from the guy who wrote Se7en! Potentially the most oddly “romantic” portrayal of voyeurism since Body Double! An entertaining cast that includes Edward Furlong being himself, a charmingly-sleepy Frank Langella, and T. Ryder Smith as the confusingly-likable gothic punk harbinger of digital doom, The Trickster! A 90s time capsule that examines the demonization of media, the growing obsession with video games, and the early stages of the internet! A movie that’s not only a great double feature pairing with 1986’s Trick or Treat, but also seems to suggest that violent video games are merely an escape from the true horrors of being a teenager!
In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on the newest entry in one of his favorite movie series, Bad Boys: Ride or Die!

It’s June, so that means it’s time for the AIPT Movies podcast’s “Junesis” series! Where we cover movies based on/revolving around video games! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt are joined by comic book artist/writer Tony Sedani (Return to Rander, Skin Deep), to discuss Paul W.S. Anderson’s first journey into the world of video game adaptations, 1995’s Mortal Kombat!
Endearingly dated VFX! A lovably awkward-looking four-armed monster man with back problems! A delicious turkey dinner being heartlessly discarded! Surprisingly faithful character designs! An unexplained cybernetic eye! More high kicks than you can count! A committed cast that includes Robin Shou, Bridgette Wilson, Linden Ashby, Trevor Goddard, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and a wonderfully-miscast Christopher Lambert! An iconic EDM soundtrack that not only influenced future Mortal Kombat games, but possibly also The Matrix and 1998’s Blade! An enjoyably sincere and campy movie with vibrant colors and impressive sets that looks shockingly expensive by modern standards, which despite its watered down gore, may also be one of the most faithful and successful video game adaptations of all time!
In addition, everyone shares their spoiler-free thoughts on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, while Tony talks about In A Violent Nature, and Alex discusses the remarkably bizarre 1999 rom-com, Never Been Kissed!

It’s May, which means it’s time for the AIPT Movies podcast’s “Mayhem” series! Where we cover movies that kick ass in the literal sense! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Michael Mann’s “night on the town with a hitman” action-thriller, Collateral!
The city of Los Angeles presented as a supporting character! Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise in two of their best roles! Twists and turns! Early digital cinematography that grounds you in the “reality” of the story! Shocking, sudden violence! Improvisation that even the most accomplished jazz musician couldn’t see coming! A “frenemy” action thriller that ponders the pitfalls of rumination and perfectionism, in what may be a shockingly good double feature with Michael Bay’s Ambulance! Dark, empty streets and subway stations have never looked so good!
In addition, Tim recommends 1978’s Mr. No Legs before he’s even seen it! While Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Backdraft, Mute Witness, and what could end up being his favorite movie of 2024, The Fall Guy!

Over the top action and visuals! A surprise kaiju battle! Disgusting sound effects! Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite! Cameos for fans of the Spice Girls, Linkin Park, Tool, and Nine Inch Nails! Jason Statham fully committing to complete lunacy! Amy Smart giving a fearless performance and delivering one of the most satisfying short fight scenes in movie history! A movie that takes (often insane and offensive) chances, coming off like a movie adaptation of a video game released by Troma! For better or worse, there’s no other movie quite like it!
In addition, Tim and Matt share their spoiler-free thoughts on Late Night with the Devil, while Alex talks about Abigail, 2019’s Charlie’s Angels, 1993’s The Fugitive, and Kurt Russell’s 1997 nailbiter, Breakdown!

Not quite horror, not quite action, that sweet spot in the middle where danger is afoot, and lives are still on the line! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Alfred Hitchock’s mistaken-identity mystery thriller, North by Northwest!
Possibly the most iconic gray suit in movie history! Classic filmmaking techniques and visual effects! A cornucopia of fantastic mid-century design and fashion, featuring the work of legendary artist Saul Bass! Cary Grant being surprisingly charming while running away from an airplane! Eva Marie Saint as an early archetype for the modern femme fatale! A fun, punchy script full of twists and suspense! A movie that not only created the template for the James Bond series, but also influenced countless other movies, such as Catch Me If You Can and Total Recall (we think)!

Breathtaking stunt work that includes an incredible Parkour chase sequence! Countless exotic locations! That creepy Body Worlds exhibit! A now-classic Bond theme from the late and great Chris Cornell! Disturbing torture methods! Surprisingly tense gambling scenes thanks to veteran director Martin Campbell! A solid cast that includes Mads Mikkelsen weeping blood, Eva Green, Jeffrey Wright, an irreplaceable Judi Dench, and Daniel Craig seamlessly owning the iconic role of James Bond! A movie that adds depth and complexity to a well-established character, showing that reboots/prequels CAN work if done correctly!

In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt kick off the series by discussing another film set on that mysterious and alluring red planet, John Carpenter’s 2001 space-action-horror flick Ghosts of Mars!
Shocking deaths and beheadings! A deeply misguided attempt to impress a girl with one’s can-opening skills! A flashback within a flashback within a flashback! Creepy Mars vibes and visuals that evoke the fear of a nightmare on a dead planet! Hot Topic space-zombies with muppet voices! A possibly-miscast Natasha Henstridge! Pam Grier! Young Jason Statham with some degree of hair! Ice Cube having a lot of fun at least! A somewhat misunderstood attempt at a crowd-pleasing blockbuster from legendary director John Carpenter, that continues his impressive and distinctive work as a composer, even if it’s occasionally a little too metal for its own good!
In addition, Tim and Alex share their spoiler-free thoughts on Dune 2, while Alex talks about another late-career John Carpenter joint, Escape from L.A.!

In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt kick off the series by discussing a movie that satisfies BOTH qualifiers, Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 sci-fi classic, Total Recall!
Hologram gags! Explosive decompression! Disturbingly inhuman, cab-driving robots! A classic musical score from Jerry Goldsmith! Bone-crunching sound FX! The psychic space mutant, Kuato! The quickest divorce you’ve ever seen! Possibly the greatest human-shield in movie history! Incredible, kinda-gross-looking practical FX from the reclusive and legendary Rob Bottin! A wonderful cast that includes an unrecognizable Hank from Breaking Bad, Michael Ironside’s weird run, Ronny Cox playing his character from RoboCop, Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin in a rough & tumble girl fight, and Arnold Schwarzenegger delivering some of the greatest one-liners of his career! The satirical carnage of Paul Verhoeven meets the larger-than-life theatrics of an Arnold movie in this exploration of class, capitalism, and the hidden desires of the human psyche! The planet Mars never looked so good!

Infectious music from Jim Steinman, Ry Cooder, Dan Hartman, Stevie Nicks, The Blasters, and Boston-based new wave band, Face to Face! Diane Lane looking incredible while playing one of the greatest fictional rock stars of all time! A story out of time, transporting you to a world that feels both nostalgic and somewhat futuristic (for the time it was released at least)! A sonic and visual feast, this movie was made for fans of noirs, cars, and motorcycle bars!

Endless product placement! A classic and catchy soundtrack that features Letters to Cleo’s Kay Hanley and (we think) Matthew Sweet! A consistently funny movie that effortlessly bounces between witty, subversive moments and silly, slapstick comedy! Fun, creative direction from Can’t Hardly Wait’s Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont! A perfect cast that includes Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, Tara Reid, Parker Posey, Alan Cumming, Missi Pyle, possibly the greatest boy band of all time, Dujour, and the vocal talents of Mr. Moviefone! A misunderstood, ahead of its time gem - with a sweet message about being true to yourself and not getting caught in the cogs of consumerism - that has found the cult following it deserves despite its disappointing box office!

An iconic soundtrack! A city so dangerous and depressing it’ll make you want to move to Gotham! Terrifying, heartless villains! Amazing cinematography and production design! Great action and stunts, including what may be the best rooftop-running scenes of all time! Ernie Hudson, Michael Wincott, David Patrick Kelly, Tony Todd, and what would have been a star-making performance from the late Brandon Lee! A borderline miracle in terms of quality (considering the mid-production tragedy), this dark, sad, somewhat funny, and surprisingly sweet story gives you a totally different kind of comic book movie!

Some of the greatest laser-graffiti you’ve ever seen! A pulsating neck wound! Squibs! Theme music that will live in your brain for days after watching! Ancient alien lore that almost makes Ridley Scott’s Prometheus look like a more expensive remake with fewer jump kicks! A borderline miracle of low-budget cinema filled with charm and glorious fight choreography! One of the original “soft reboots,” packed with incredible creature FX - including the stunning Guyver suit - all brought to you by FX legend and director Steve Wang! Are you currently surrounded by people who are secretly giant monsters called Zoanoids? This movie probably won’t help you confirm, but it can’t hurt to try!

It’s December, so that means it’s time for the AIPT Movies podcast’s “Holidanger” series! Where we cover the best kind of holiday movie: the ones where lives are on the line! In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Tim Burton’s surprisingly dark and adult Christmas-themed sequel, Batman Returns!
Incredible production design that brings the snowy and fantastical Gotham City to life! One of Danny Elfman’s greatest scores! (Mostly) relatable villains the audience and even Batman can sympathize with! Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Christopher Walken, and a movie-stealing performance from Michelle Pfeiffer! Finally, a superhero movie with multiple scenes that take place on rooftops! A relic from a time when superhero movies had to appeal to wide audiences without relying on fan service! A misunderstood sequel with horror elements, adult themes, and a mini rom-com hidden within that’s finally getting the appreciation it deserves!
In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on The Holdovers and Godzilla Minus One, while both Alex and Tim talk about John Woo’s return to American action cinema with Silent Night!

In this week’s episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Richard Donner’s surprisingly dark and funny modern retelling of Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic, Scrooged!
A wonderful cast that features Bill Murray at what may be his all-time scummiest! A fake Lee Majors action movie! Bob Goulet's Old Fashioned Cajun Christmas! Timeless special effects mixed with classic Hollywood cinematography! The best interpretation of A Christmas Carol that doesn’t include Muppets! A perfect Christmas movie that captures the spirit of the season while also being oddly terrifying, funny, and deep! A mashup of several genres that leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy while also scaring the “Dickens” out of you!

In the first ‘Xenovember’ episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Ridley Scott’s second prequel to his 1979 masterpiece, Alien, the divisive sci-fi horror film, Alien: Covenant!
Yet another wonderful score! Moments of true tension and chaotic horror! Beautiful cinematography and production design! Some of the worst vicarious back pain you’ll ever experience! Questionable character decisions mixed with solid performances and compelling human drama! Michael Fassbender in dual roles that are equally riveting and perfectly contrast each other! One of the most iconic flute-related scenes/lines in movie history! Somewhat unclear musings on the dangers of artificial intelligence and the concepts of sentience, creation, life, and death! Was this simply a way for Ridley Scott to make a quick buck and ensure funding for future projects? Does the demystification of the xenomorph continue to harm the series? Would Alien: Covenant be an easier watch for non-Alien fans?!
In addition, Tim shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Death Becomes Her, while Alex briefly discusses Talk to Me, Killers of the Flower Moon, and David Fincher’s new Netflix movie, The Killer!

In this year’s final “Shocktober” episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss one of the better examples of a TV show-turned-movie, the bloody and surprisingly fun, Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight!
Single-location horror! Impressive practical FX and gore! Countless quotable lines! Fun bookends from the Crypt Keeper himself! A loveable cast that includes Dick Miller, William Sadler, CCH Pounder, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Billy Zane in his greatest role! Unnecessary sexiness! A wonderful-yet-failed cinematic experiment not unlike Tarantino and Rodriguez’s Grindhouse! Comic booky demon lore and mischievous ghouls that would pair well with the Evil Dead series! Possibly accidental Aliens and Terminator vibes! A delicious mix of horror, camp sensibility, and action tropes, this movie has it all! Did we mention how good Billy Zane is?
In addition, the gang give spoiler-free thoughts on several Halloween-season viewing options, such as: An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Samuel Bodin’s Cobweb, Critters, Frankenhooker, The Frighteners, Trick ‘r Treat, 1980’s Prom Night, 2015’s We Are Still Here, The Collector, The Collection, and Saw X!

Intense drama and doomed romance! Surprisingly horned up characters! A stacked cast that includes Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Cary Elwes, Richard E. Grant, Sadie Frost, Tom Waits, and a charmingly miscast Keanu Reeves! Iconic use of shadow gags! An unstoppable juggernaut of old-school VFX, stunning creature makeup, and impeccable costume design! Beautiful, colorful cinematography! All around expert craft that truly makes this a “filmmaker’s film!”

An incredible cast including the legendary Chow Yun-fat, Simon Yam, and Anthony Wong! Directed by Ringo Lam before he came to the states and started working with Jean-Claude Van Damme! Perfectly balanced horror, tension, and comedy! A wonderful cast that includes Robin Wright, a magnetic Samuel L. Jackson, and Bruce Willis in one of his greatest roles! A fantastic (and occasionally pretty funky) score from James Newton Howard! Graceful camera work and effective use of color that helps define the characters and story! One of Shyamalan’s best movies and one of his best twist endings! All that and more in this movie that helped pave the way for the modern superhero genre, and is secretly about how you can never be happy if you’re not true to yourself!

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the movie that asks “what if Hitchcock were gross?” The body horror film, Body Parts!
A car accident scene that traumatized young minds years before Final Destination 2! Great music and opening credits! A breezy runtime! An exciting physical therapy montage! One of the strangest uses of a water tank you’ve ever seen! Poorly attached limbs! A solid cast that includes Brad Dourif, Kim Delaney, and Jeff Fahey smoking his brains out! The suspense of a Hitchcockian thriller, but with the gore of a far schlockier B-movie! Where does evil live? In the soul? In the blood? Watch this movie for a confusing answer!

In this week’s episode of the AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Ridley Scott’s prequel to his own 1979 masterpiece, Alien, the somewhat controversial sci-fi horror film, Prometheus!
A fantastic and hauntingly hopeful musical score! A stacked cast that includes Michael Fassbender in one of his greatest roles! Incredible production design and cinematography! A horrific self-surgery scene for the ages! A surprisingly timely warning about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence! A movie that may have been viewed as a modern classic if not for the baggage of a connected franchise! Is this yet another example of the folly of de-mystifying the enjoyably mysterious? Is the exploration of humanity’s hubris, and insatiable desire for more, perfectly told through a technically unnecessary prequel? Listen now to find out!

Voice-imitation skills that would make Ethan Hunt jealous! Great stunts that include an iconic helicopter action sequence! A tragic (but surprisingly funny) hero against colorful and over-the-top villains that will change the way you look at cigar-cutters forever! Are you looking for a palate cleanser after countless years of MCU/DCEU fatigue? This early entry in the superhero movie genre from one of its greatest architects may be just what you need!

A movie that’s sure to feel nostalgic to anyone who spent their childhood making movies with their friends! All that and more in a fun, unafraid, and surprisingly sweet addition to the “kid adventure” movie genre alongside Goonies and Monster Squad - that often feels like it was directed by a younger, schlockier Steven Spielberg!

In this episode of the new AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Neill Blomkamp’s new move Demonic, David Cronenberg’s surreal, and weirdly horny, 1999 film eXistenZ, and provide barely-informed opinions on some recent releases they haven’t managed to see: Candyman, Vacation Friends, and He’s All That.
The gang also covers some movie news, interviews Tom Cruise’s underworked stunt double, and may possibly destroy the fabric of existence - not to be confused with eXistenZ - by accidentally awakening the Djinn from Wishmaster 2!
*You’ll have to tune in next week to find out if the world ends or not! I mean, if you’re reading this now and the world still exists I guess that’s a hint, but still.

In the third episode of the new AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss the new Hugh Jackman movie from director Lisa Joy, Reminiscence, Renny Harlin’s sharksploitation classic, Deep Blue Sea, and provide completely uninformed opinions on some recent releases they haven’t seen: The Protege, The Night House, and Sweet Girl.
The gang also covers some movie news, and examines the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer leak with an anonymous source from the dark web, who may or may not have some additional info (but don’t quote him on that).
Alex also tries to lighten things up by providing context for some of his snarkier comments in previous episodes, but then slips back to snarkiness later in the episode. Maybe next time.

In the second episode of the new AIPT Movies podcast, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Bob Odenkirk’s surprising foray into action with Nobody, and provide completely uninformed opinions on some recent releases they haven’t managed to see: Free Guy, Respect, and Don’t Breathe 2.
The gang also covers some movie news, the excellent 1995 Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight movie, and gets a special visit from Kuato, star of Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 Sci-Fi classic, Total Recall.
Fair warning, the audio is still not quite perfect yet. This time, it’s because Alex figured that since distortion is cool when it comes to guitars, it might be cool when it comes to his voice (it wasn’t). Also, Alex’s dog Ruby sneaks in, and yes, 1997’s Spawn movie comes up again.
In the first episode of the new AIPT Movies podcast, Alex Harris, Tim Gardiner, and Matt Paul catchup on recent summer releases like F9: the Fast Saga, Black Widow, and - to the dismay of a surprise guest - Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins. The gang also goes over some movie news and a few older films like the under-the-radar comic adaption The Empty Man and the frequently maligned 1997 Spawn movie.
