Soul contracts are akin to a verbal, unwritten contract.

They’re promises we make to other people to do or not do certain things, or behave in certain ways.

Such promises that are often not in our best interest.

They can set us up for a lifetime of unfulfillment in our personal lives while we exhaust ourselves trying to people-please in our careers.

Reclaiming your Feminine Sovereignty is key to breaking soul contracts that aren't good for you.

A sovereign woman is one who has agency over her body, mind and spirit.

What other people think of her or what they might do is simply not the number one variable in her decisions.

If you’re wondering why you’re afraid to say no, or can’t get what you want, listen to this episode and learn:

  • How to recognize if you have soul contracts that should be broken.
  • Why breaking soul contracts is essential to being the boss of you.
  • Why feminine sovereignty is key to having the confidence to say no to people-pleasing, and yes to yourself.
  • Why all this matters to smart, successful women.
  • How to reclaim your feminine sovereignty.
  • The three steps to break unhelpful soul contracts so you can get what you actually want in your life, and not just what others want you to have, do or be.

Geraldine Carter teaches you how to work less and earn more. Geraldine Carter is an environmental engineer who took a world tour, literally (you have to listen to the podcast!) and turned her knack for reading a profit & loss statement into a successful coaching and consulting business helping CPAs get off of the tax hamster wheel.

Work less and make more money; what's not to love? I had a blast doing this interview with Geraldine.

Any woman who can help anyone work less so they can ski more is a kindred spirit.

I am also excited to have my first science and math badass on the show.

Even if you're not a CPA or not self-employed, Geraldine shares pure gold for how anyone working at a firm (of any kind....) can summon their own entrepreneurial spirit so they can put more of the control of their career back into their own hands. And that's something we all need, no matter where we work or what stage of our career we're in!

What You Will Discover: * Why being very specific with your niche helps you make more money in less time and with less chaos. * Why you should get out of "time for money" thinking about your services and focus on value. * Why high-achieving women are more prone to self-doubt, and how to reframe that. * Why it's not your fault if all your years of education didn't prepare you for whatever challenge you're facing in your career or business! * Why it's often better to throw away the "script" for a "conventionally successful" life -- and forge your own path instead.

Are you ready to throw away the b.s. script that others handed you, so you can think bigger about your own life and career/business? Listen now! For resources from the show, go to: https://lawyergoddess.com/16-thinking-big-with-geraldine-carter/

No matter what your circumstances are, if you have a calling in your heart and soul to work for yourself, and long for all the joys and advantages that can bring, you have it in you to do it. Some rules are common sense. But many "rules" in society are just cultural nonsense designed to keep women "seen and not heard."

Such "rules" -- or as Brooke Castillo would term, "manuals" that society has for our behavior -- drive smart women to second-guess themselves and worry about making people mad or disappointed if said rules are broken.

Why is it important to sometimes break certain rules? The cost of remaining silent can be greater than just our own integrity.

In today's episode, come with me as we break some rules and have a few laughs about it.

This episode contains adult language.

Are you shoulding yourself? Telling yourself all the time that you should do XYZ or shouldn't do XYZ?

When we "should ourselves," part of us has very noble intentions. We have goals, areas we want to improve or grow, or personal standards or a protocol (like with food).

But when we find ourselves feeling bad and continuing to engage in unwanted behavior, or create undesirable circumstances in our personal or professional lives, "shoulding" could be the culprit.

In this episode, learn how to recognize "shoulding,"  understand why we do it, and learn my somewhat unconventional alternative approach to personal improvement.

It's time to chuck the "I should..." strategy in favor of something much kinder and more efficient.

You are ready to think about all of your relationships in a wholly different way -- personal and professional.

This week's episode is an excerpt of a class I taught going into depth on several key concepts I live by and use when working with my coaching and mentoring clients:

  • Feminine and masculine energy
  • Brooke Castillo's Self-Coaching Model
  • Brooke Castillo's concept of the "manual," which is what it sounds like -- our personal list of rules for how we wish other people (and ourselves...) would behave.

And the coolest part of this episode is that we apply these concepts to a very important topic -- relationships.

I cover a lot of advanced material in this episode, but I wouldn't be publishing it if I didn't intuit that you are ready for and thirsting for these concepts.

Burnout. It might manifest as waking up at 3am worrying about work, and then dragging oneself through the work day, feeling overwhelmed and overworked while not getting anything actually done.

Burnout is actually something we often bring on ourselves, through how we are thinking and feeling about our work. And it can take a physical toll.

When we are burned out, it usually takes a well-rounded approach utilizing body, mind and spirit strategies, to bring us back.

Listen to this episode to gain critical insight into the origins of burnout, plus a wealth of ideas on how to recover from burnout.

Many of us struggle to make decisions. We might take hours to pick out what to wear, months to decide what color to paint the house, and years to decide whether to leave a job and hang out our own shingle. (For the record, it took me five YEARS to decide to go solo!)

All this indecision can be exhausting. We've all heard of decision fatigue.

But why do we put ourselves through such drama?

There are a lot of systems and practical advice about how to make better decisions. You know, writing out a list of pros and cons. Putting a deadline on a calendar and just doing it. Etc. Common-sense crap we already know.

But if you already KNOW that stuff, and it still feels bad and you're avoiding a big decision, or saying yes to too many different things and not deciding that anything is a "no," some insight into why it's hard to make decisions is in order.

FOMO -- the fear of missing out -- is one version of placing excessive importance on the outcome. It's one major reason why otherwise smart and capable women struggle so much with making decisions. Inside, we are afraid we will be mad at ourselves for the "wrong" decision, or fear we will be sad about the thing we passed up.

And people-pleasing is another reason. Many of us actually have decided on what we really, really want in our heart of hearts, but don't do it because we are afraid someone else will be mad or sad. And sometimes we go years without even telling our own selves the truth about what we really, really want.

This stems from our "good little student" syndrome again -- we want people to be happy with us and this strategy has been largely effective. Sometimes the smarter and more capable we are, the more seems to be at stake, which brings us back to the first point -- placing too much importance on the consequences.

It's human to want to grow and expand, try all the things, taste everything that life has to offer. I'm not here to suppress that impulse. But there is something incredibly sweet about really savoring just a few select things.

In this Episode, I give you permission to say no and embrace constraint to strengthen your decisionmaking muscle, so that each successive decision you make is easier and faster and with less drama.

And I recommend an awesome article (linked in the show notes) that will have you re-thinking whether a multitude of options is a net positive for your happiness.

Should women "lean in" to have it all? The title of a 2013 book by Sheryl Sandberg, "lean in" has become synonymous with women being fiercely independent and working hard to get ahead.

Criticisms of the "lean in" concept have flagged the differences in the life circumstances women have starting out, and widespread inequities in our culture that can make it more difficult for some women to realize all of their ambitions just from working hard and showing up as their best.

Proponents of leaning in would counter that what works for men should work for women, and that they are working to level the playing field by demonstrating that a woman can be as dedicated as a man despite other priorities in life or at home that compete for her attention.

What about "leaning back?" The linguistic opposite of leaning in (at least on the surface), "lean back" is widely-disseminated advice to women who want a man to take the lead in their relationship, or no longer want the stress of having to go out and do everything for themselves. After all that hard work and leaning in, it's nice to lean back and let the world come to you. And in work or business, there is some kind of relief in thinking about just letting things happen and show up in synchronistic ways.

Critics of the lean back concept believe that this behavior (in relationships) takes us back to the 1950s, or is un-feminist. And in career and business, they explain that this is a form of magical thinking.

Proponents of leaning back would counter that they really just encourage you to be your real feminine self, aligned with the Universe, and not have to act like a man to get what you want.

Maybe it's both: The proponents of "lean in" and "lean back" have a lot of valuable things to add to the discourse about how women can further their interests.

Maybe it's neither: With all the advice to "lean in" at work, and "lean back" in your personal life, you might feel quite off-center, never quite getting it "right" anywhere. That's because with all this leaning to and fro, you might not be taking the best advice there is, which is your own wisdom.

Listen to this episode to learn how you may be obscuring the real voice of what you "should" do in any given situation.

This episode also shares two very simple but powerful exercises to re-center you amidst all the "shoulds" and polarizing advice.

Are you conflict-averse? Do you go for days, weeks, or years avoiding difficult conversations you know you need to have?

Many smart, educated women struggle with difficult conversations, simply because they are in the habit of discounting their emotions and are afraid what the other person will do, think or say.

Here is an exercise adapted from bits and pieces of the work of Chris Voss, author of Never Split the Difference, Kasia Urbaniak, author of Unbound, a Woman's Guide to Power, and Master Coach Brooke Castillo of the Life Coach School. (If you want to go deeper with tools and teachings on negotiation and power dynamics, I encourage you to read the excellent source material from those three authors/teachers or sign up for my Power Bootcamp that starts in mid-January 2022.)

I massaged those fine teachers' methods into something that would work for my clients. I came up with this, designed specifically for conflict-avoidant feminine energy women.

By now, you probably have heard quite a bit about manifestation, law of attraction, visualization and meditation.

Some of you aren't meditating as consistently as you'd like, and when you work on your manifestations doing this or that mindset tool or technique, you're not sure you see a benefit.

Or for some of you, meditation is already a daily habit and you think of yourself as a good manifester, but certain areas of life still seem blocked, like a last frontier.

If you're an otherwise high-achieving, successful woman puzzled by this, take heart.

Today's episode demystifies how to manifest, by breaking down what actually happens in our brains and in our lives when we are manifesting, according to The Model -- and lightly touching on science.

I'll also explain why high-achieving women often have a really hard time figuring out how to manifest.

And finally, today's episode also will convince you that meditation is key, and thought work or mindset work alone is not enough for you to manifest your desires.

Don't miss this one, because I share a powerful and personal manifestation story from my own life that I have never before widely shared, and the exciting knowledge that makes my manifestations even more powerful now.

Are you tired of hearing that "women are too emotional?" Yet on the other hand, do you secretly wish that you could manage your own, powerful emotions better so that you can keep your cool?

This is understandable. For eons, women have been hearing that they are too emotional. And not too long ago, our foremothers fought hard to gain respect in historically male-dominated jobs like law, medicine, engineering, business, and executive leadership when few thought they could keep up.

The problem occurs when we suppress our emotions, and put enormous energy into pretending like things don't make us angry or sad, when in fact they do.

Aren't you tired of hearing that "women are too emotional?" But then so many of us chide ourselves for not being levelheaded enough, and we judge our strong feelings.

When we mansplain and gaslight ourselves that we shouldn't be so emotional, we often unintentionally create the very impressions that we do not want to create.

The truth is, our emotions are important, valuable, and wholly for us. When we believe this, and we have the tools to take better care of ourselves in the heat of the moment of an uncomfortable emotion, they become our powerful allies.

In this Episode, I invite you to stop internalizing these destructive messages that "women are too emotional," and I give you three powerful steps to manage difficult emotions so that you can show up the way you want without being fake.

Feel like "positive thinking" never seems to stick for you, because of the serious nature of your work or some insurmountable aspect of your personality?

It's because trying to "do positive thinking" actually does not work when treated as a "technique" or strategy. The essence of it is well-intentioned, and much of the spiritual and personal growth advice out there has a lot of value; indeed, positive thoughts will help you create desired results.

But most of what's out there misses the mark when it comes to what to do with the so-called "negative" thoughts and feelings human beings necessarily have. What do you do with those buggers, anyway?

Most of western culture would like us to think it's all happy-happy, joy-joy all the time. Look happy. Look busy. Don't let them see you sweat. If you have a bad day, maybe there's something wrong with you. Maybe God doesn't love you or you need a pill for that.

When you go deeper than the internet-meme inspirational-quote level of spirituality, you get to some really interesting stuff. Perhaps the best thing Abraham-Hicks teaches is the value of contrast -- the value of the full spectrum of experiences, both desired and not.

It's our negative thoughts that can help us manifest faster -- because we start where we really are, not the super-curated version of where we think we "should" be.

In this Episode, I share a powerful secret about the myth of positive thinking that is going to give you great relief. I'll give you full permission to wallow in your negative thoughts like a pig in the mud, but only so long as you go into it knowing that mud is fertile soil for creating what you really want. That's radical self-awareness, and in this Episode, I share why.

Several world-class women athletes have declined to compete in certain events, citing mental health needs, or simply a desire to conserve their energy for other events.  But we women lawyers don't always give ourselves the same grace.  We think we have to get the gold medal at lawyering (and everything else....) day in and day out, without a break.  This approach is unsustainable.  It leads to emotional and physical burnout.  We need to normalize taking a break as not just something you do when you are physically ill or experiencing an acute mental health issue.  It should not require a doctor's note.  Balance is a human right.  You need a full night of sleep if you want to go get the gold medal tomorrow (and five or 10 years from now).  Need help bouncing back from burnout?  Listen to this episode, and then jump into the Lawyergoddess Workshop, the three-month transformation for all things life and law.  Want to learn more? I'm taking applications now: https://lawyergoddess.com/lawyer-coaching/

It's a myth that the high-achieving woman has to sacrifice her freedom and her interests outside of work in order to remain high-achieving.   That freedom starts with deciding to lead with your own energy, even if your current circumstances seem bureaucratic and stiff, or chaotic and dysfunctional.   Today's special guest is my coaching colleague Sarah Shiozawa, whose career in politics and government has evolved into coaching high-achieving women to become better leaders and happier in their lives.   I know you will learn so much from Sarah, so I let this be a long episode covering all the things!  Many, many gems!! If you resonate with Sarah and want to learn more about her coaching, you can reach her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sarah.shiozawa / @sarah.shiozawa

Sometimes we have to eat the proverbial sh!t sandwich. Sometimes law and life are hard.  But too often, when we are going through it, the way we are going about it in our mind makes it feel worse than it has to.  Today's episode will help reorient your attitude toward the hard times.    Have questions about coaching?  I have answers at https://saraellen.net

A lot of lawyers have an issue with what I call "Protestant Work Ethic on Crack."   That's the pressure to get ahead, and the fear that if we aren't achieving enough success, it means we are not worthy of more money.   Good intentions can lead to some real scarcity-driven decisions.   Today's episode discusses how we are indoctrinated to believe "work hard and you'll get ahead" and how we turn that against ourselves in a negative way.  It goes into the innocuous thoughts we think that are actually causing us to have negative feelings and drive us to overwork, yet underperform.   And finally, it goes into some powerful questions to ask yourself -- and some powerful ideas to consider -- to help you close the gap between where you are, and where you think you "should" be.   Grab some avocado toast and listen.

Lawyers do a lot of things that they don't always feel like doing. You know -- responding to or drafting discovery, or motions, or discovery motions....   And a lot of us procrastinate those things because we don't want to feel the unpleasant emotions we associate with doing the task.  That onerous, drudgery, scared, whiny feeling....yes, that.   So how do I get myself to do stuff anyway?   As a coach, I have a lot of mental tricks up my sleeve, and one of them is the power of desire.   Listen to find out how to harness the power of desire for yourself, and do the damn things you told yourself you were going to do!

Are you curious about the benefits of coaching for your practice and your life? Today we have a very special guest, Leah Scott, who is one of my coaching clients.  We cover a wealth of topics in this episode -- from mental health to time management!  Leah shares how she has been able to grow her practice and improve her self-belief since joining the Lawyergoddess Workshop last October.  The phone is ringing off the hook with clients wanting her services -- and she's much better able to handle the increased workload (and popularity). And, she answers the question, "what's next?" after you've addressed an underlying mental health or medical condition but don't know how to take action. If you can relate, this is a must-listen!  Learn more about the Lawyergoddess Workshop and other coaching options here: https://saraellen.net/coaching.html

One of the biggest low-grade anxieties for women lawyers is student loan debt.  Whether you just got out of law school, or you're ten years into your career and are still dutifully paying on them, I have some helpful perspectives today to help you raise your consciousness about this subject.  Want help with all the various stressors?  I coach on life, law and all the stuff.  Reach out to me at http://saraellen.net!

Many women lawyers end up in therapy, but therapy isn't the right solution for everyone.  Many women lawyers think that there's something wrong with them because they are at odds with, or stressed about, their work.  I discuss what I personally think are the times when you should consider therapy, and when you should consider coaching.  And sometimes it is appropriate to do both.  I am not knocking therapy for medically significant issues such as trauma, grief, disabling anxiety or depression, and serious substance abuse.  If you are dealing with such an issue or even have an inkling you may be, call your doctor.  If you are thinking of hurting yourself, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255. But if you don't have a clinically significant mental health issue and are just feeling out of place, stressed out, have "garden variety emotional distress" or have thoughts about quitting your job, or not getting the results you want in your career from what you've done in therapy, coaching may be the solution for you for these kinds of issues. I explain why in this episode. Interested in learning more? go to saraellen.net.

Ever see that meme that goes, "practicing law is like riding a bike...except the bike is on fire, the road is on fire, and you are on fire? etc. etc."  It often feels that way, doesn't it? That meme is funny, but when we think everything is on fire and equally mission-critical, it can paralyze us from taking action. And then, we usually end up with a much bigger fire to put out.  Today I share a recent Instagram Live where I shared a new way you can look at the fires you have to put out that will help you get you back on task, no matter how bad it seems.  This is a quick episode -- so, even YOU have time for it today!  Wondering if you have lawyer burnout? Are you too hard on yourself? Many women lawyers are. I don't know one who hasn't struggled with this from time to time.   Women lawyers unfortunately have a unique "trifecta" of attributes that are a setup for self-criticism and doubt.   And often, our valiant self-improvement efforts are counterproductive.   Today I share a useful exercise that you should do today to pull some of the crap out of your head and start seeing the evidence that you are just fine, just as you are, right now, today.   And if you want additional help with this, go to http://saraellen.net, take a look around, and reach out when you're ready!

Some women lawyers feel like they have two parts to them. One is that logical part that is trained to think like a lawyer, in a linear, just-the-facts-ma'am way. That other part is creative. Spiritual. Wants to rely on God/Universe to help her manifest some stuff in ways logic can't explain. Today I share a recent Instagram live where I clear up the confusion that these are wholly separate ways of thinking. They're not! If you are feeling any kind of inner conflict about your life or your practice, that's precisely what I help you clear up! We can beg, plead, and scream all we want, but some people just keep annoying the ever-loving crap out of us, doing dumb stuff against our advice, and disrespecting us.  Today I dispel a common misconception about what "good boundaries" are, and how to set an effective boundary.  This is a must-listen.   If you'd like help with dealing with a difficult person or setting a boundary, go to saraellen.net/lawyergoddesscall for help. "I don't know how" is something all lawyers think from time to time...perhaps daily. Many young lawyers and even experienced lawyers doubt themselves, and hope that a mentor will help.  I have a slightly different perspective on how lawyers should be raised, but despite the problems in our industry, you still have a lot more power and wisdom within you than you may be giving yourself credit for. Today I share a personal story, and invite you to question whether "I don't know how" is true, and get really clear on what you are looking for in a mentor.

Avoiding emotions gets lawyers into trouble -- and unnecessary suffering. Listen to this episode for a simple, but powerful tool to make your emotions work for, instead of against you.
