This is a podcast about what it means to grow up as a woman in modern and past time society. Growing up female explores the lives of different women, from various walks of life. Women of colour and different ethnicities and religions, sexualities, those with different mental illnesses and disabilities, as well as professional women. It explores the stereotypes associated with being female, as well as the disadvantages in both the personal and professional lives of women. Listening to, and sharing the stories of the women who make up our society and keep the world spinning.
In this weeks episode I spoke with an amazing woman who was born and raised in India. Bhavna moved abroad when she finished univeristy, and has been living outside of India for more than 15 years now.
From short skirts and PDA to eve teasing and the fear of being attacked with acid: life as a girl in India can be terrifying from beginning to end.
She tells us what it's like growing up in India in a society where there are strict beauty standards, and you're surrounded by a culture where women are perpetually unsafe. And she shares how different she has found life to be while living abroad.
The cultural and gender shock she experienced as a young woman making her way through the world.
In the first episode of Growing up Female, we're discussing sexual assault. From the societal rules women follow in order to stay safe, to the harrowing personal account of someone who has been sexually assaulted.
You won't know her name, but you'll know her story. Her story can be reflected in your own experiences, in the experiences of people you know and love, and poeple you don't know at all.
I know more than one woman who has been harassed or assaulted, and every woman I know, and every woman that you know also knows somebody who has been harassed or assaulted.
There isn't a woman in the world who doesn't know of another woman who has been scared or hurt at the hands of somebody else.
So I think it's time we talk about the 1 in 2.
This week's episode is all about mums in business. I was fortunate enough to interview Rachel Allan for the second episode of Growing Up Female.She's a woman, a business owner and a mother.
She is all of these things, and so much more, just like every other woman in the same situation.
This episode explores what it's like to be a mum who owns her own business whilst also trying to raise children. We can all pretty much agree that this is no easy feat, and I believe that mums need to be celebrated for the amazing work they're doing in both a professional and person regard.
Women can have it all but not necessarily in the way society tells you it should look like, just ask Rachel.
This episode is that. Celebrating and listening to one woman share her story so that we may find more women like this and listen to their stories too.
