If you have ever visited someone in a nursing facility or rehab center, you know you don’t have to look far to see staff members happily helping the patients. The nurses, therapists and staff of these medical facilities are truly heroes in my book. In our story, “I Work at a Nursing Home for Monsters,” by Blair Daniels, a nurse discovers that the patients in the rest home are far from normal. Even worse, some are downright deadly. This story is a work of fiction, but there are many true accounts of staff experiencing the paranormal in these care facilities. We have a few.

What says haunted more than an old crypt in a foggy cemetery? I mean, crypts put the goth in gothic! In our story, “The Affair of the Dancing Coffins,” by George Brockhart something very strange in going on inside a family crypt. I do have to make a disclaimer, however. The coffins aren’t actually dancing, but their behavior is odd, nonetheless.
Uncounted horror stories and films have taken place inside crypts. What is the allure? Why are we drawn to these eerie structures? Let’s take a look at crypts. The crypt’s door is open, will you step inside?

Mannequins…sales enhancement, or inducers of terror? When you see a mannequin in a store window, do you stop to examine its garment offering, or watch its eyes to see if they follow you? For me, they are just giant dolls, and fall into the “yikes” category.
In our story, “The Mannequin,” by R. J. Lawrence, a young man discovers his brother’s disturbing experiments on mannequins and meets a grisly fate. Nowadays, no one is surprised to see a mannequin in a shop window or inside a shop. They are such everyday items for us that it is hard to imagine how clothes were displayed before they existed. But do we know when mannequins were actually invented? We'll take a look at the history of mannequins.

Have you ever heard a voice come through a radio that seemed misplaced? You might have heard a voice from beyond the veil. In our story, “The Message,” by Clinton Dangerfield, a death-row inmate and a chaplain hear a voice through the radio offering comfort. But is that truly what the spirit is offering? Trying to contact spirits through radio waves is not a new technique for communicating with the dead. Even Thomas Edison designed one in the 1920’s. There have been many designs since then but let’s look at its most modern counterpart, The Ghost Box.

New techniques and better equipment are developed for photography all the time. But one thing remains constant; ghosts have been making their way into photos for 200 years. Spirit Photography is as popular as it ever was. Paranormal investigators seek out spirits to photograph, but in our story, “In Every Picture,” by L. A. My maternal grandmother was raised on Kansas farm, and the blood would drain from her face at the mere mention of the word. As a child she had spent many times down in the storm cellar scared to death. Tornadoes kill 20-100 people a year in the US. What causes this persistent and deadly weather?

The teacher in the story is indeed unusual, and I wondered if there were any tales about ghostly teachers out there.…apparently not. At least I couldn’t find any stories. This week’s tale is one of true love. A love that has lasted for centuries, literally. The couple are vampires. E. Everett Evans’s story, “The Undead Die,” tells of their meeting, their transformation and their undying love.

On this episode we will climb the steps to the top of a great tower. The main character thinks he’s going to get a good night’s sleep, but what resides in the tower has other ideas. The mere thought of a tower seems to invoke ghostly images whirling around it. Perhaps there is a ghostly maiden waiting for a rescuer that never came. This is the time of year for planting. Small gardens are cropping up all over my neighborhood. One of my favorite things to plant is pumpkins. I love the beautiful pumpkin blossoms and having a Halloween Jack-o-lantern that was grown in my own yard. In our story, “The World’s Biggest Pumpkin,” by Nathaniel Lewis, a man from the Guinness Book of World Records is out on a farm to measure and weigh a likely winner in the pumpkin category. I have always wondered if after I shuffle off the mortal coil, I would be able to travel through time or continue to do the things I loved. In our story, a young woman has made a long journey to say good-bye to her dying mother. Sadly, it does not turn out to be the journey she was expecting. My mind loves to play, “what if?” It waits until I’m in a normal, everyday circumstance such as grocery shopping, getting a drink from a vending machine, or riding on Trax, Salt Lake City’s trolley service.
The game sounds something like this:
What if…as you take that box of Cheerios from the shelf, you unwittingly release a ghoul from its slumber, and it ravaged the entire grocery store?
Or…what if, as you reach into the vending machine for that Diet Pepsi, something grabs your hand and pulls you in?

We’re taking a little trip to Germany in this week’s episode, so pack up your lederhosen and dirndls and crosses to ward off evil. Yes, it’s that kind of story. “The Nightmare Road,” by Florence Crow features a young man on a road chock full of ghoulies and ghastly sights. I looked into German folklore and found several nasty creatures, including several who lure and drown people and a bevy of different kinds of witches. Regardless of which holiday you celebrate this time of year, it is no doubt ripe with traditions. One of those traditions is the telling of ghost stories. So, to honor this on this episode we present, “The Judge’s House,” by Bram Stoker, the author of, “Dracula.” There’s nothing with fangs in this story, just the tale of a student who rents an abandoned house for some quiet study time but gets something far more evil.
This story was written during a time when ghost stories at Christmas were in high demand. The place? Victorian England (1800’s and early 1900’s). We'll delve into the reasons for this ghoulish holiday obsession.

Yes, it’s that wonderful time of the year full of holiday cheer. To celebrate, we offer two stories on this week’s episode. It’s because you’ve been so good (and ghoulish) all year.
Both stories come from the shelf labeled, “Inanimate Things Come to Life.” First, we have, “Smoke Fantasy,” by Thomas R. Jordan, in which a writer’s-block-stricken author uses smoke to imagine a character. Unfortunately, the character doesn’t stay on the page. Our second story is, “The Old Black Hat,” by Gary Raisor. Two children find a stray black hat, and things become a little too “lively.”
An old black hat is often associated with magic and snowmen. What is the history behind the traditional snowman? Turns out, Frosty is a lot older than you’d think.

Our story for this week, “The Strange Woman in My Wedding Photos,” by Blair Daniels, takes us once again into the realm of paranormal photography. A young bride discovers an uninvited guest in her wedding photos, one no one remembers seeing. Capturing spirits on film is something every ghost hunter hopes for. As cameras have become more technologically sophisticated, it’s easier to catch a spectre or two on film. Unfortunately, it’s also become easier to fake a spirit photo. On this episode, “Thou Shalt Not Steal,” a story by Blair Daniels, highlights the consequences of taking something that does not belong to you. The consequences in this story, however, are far worse than any jail sentence.
Down through the centuries many people have been punished by an item they stole. Whether in the name or science or greed, their crime resulted in karmic consequences from simple bad luck to death. We'll take a look at a few instances of unfortunate or cursed thieves.

This week’s story is, “I Accidentally Summoned Stan Instead of Satan,” by Blair Daniels.
This episode could also be titled, “Be careful of what you wish for, and really watch your spelling.” In our story, some young girls learn the hard way that summoning Satan may not be the best way to spend a girl’s weekend.
Humans have wanted to speak to specters from the beyond for centuries. Perhaps to say, “I love you,” a last “Good-bye,” or find out where Aunt Edna hid her diamonds, people have tried many methods to contact the dead. To have some fun, we'll dive into some excerpts from The Spiritualist, a magazine from the 1800's devoted to contacting the dead.

To celebrate the coming of the creepy season, we have two stories for you.

While I was researching the topic, “Returning from the Dead,” I came across an interesting article about the Lazarus syndrome and thought it would complement this episodes’ stories very well. This week’s episode has serious tunnel vision. Our story, “The Long Tunnel,” by Michael Squid, tells the tale of the exploration of an old tunnel, the length of which is tragically miscalculated. In our first story, “The Painting My Husband Keeps,” a young wife does not like a painting her husband insists on displaying in their home. As we discover, her dislike of the painting is fueled by more than artistic preference. Our second story, “Thou Shalt Not Steal,” is about a young mother who regrets her decision to steal a fire engine for her son. 292 million tons of trash per year is produced by the USA alone. The impact on the planet is scary enough, and if you’re a dark thinker like me, something much scarier might just be lurking under all that garbage. It’s certainly true in our story, “The Dump,” by Joe R. Landsdale. In the story, it seems the dump caretaker has a very special pet…one that enjoys eating more that leftover hamburgers. Join me for Episode 36 as I read, Dead Legs, by Edmond Hamilton. This is an eerie story of haunted human limbs! Could it be true? Can transplants haunt the recipient? Our main character helps himself to a new set of legs, but the previous owner isn't finished with them yet and plans to finish him! We'll dive into the theory that transplant recipients might receive more than just a donor's organ; some seem to receive a piece of the donor's life as well. Then, we'll explore a shrine in New Orleans where grateful folk leave their artificial limbs and eyes as "thank you's. " This episode is a tad longer, so grab something chilled, sit back, and be prepared to get "chilled" yourself.

Episode 5
Dead and Didn't Know It
On this episode, we'll look at stories with a twist ending, in which the main character finds out at the end of the story that they've been dealing with something otherworldly all along.
Our main story is, "The Waxwork," by A. M. Burrage, and there are two short-short stories I loved as a child. We'll dive into a brief history of ghost stories, how wax museums came to be and how the wax figures are made. So, turn out the lights, light a candle and snuggle in.

This episode is devoted to skull-screaming and otherwise. To compliment F. Marion Crawford's, "The Screaming Skull," we look at the bones, culture and uses of the human skull.
Detours included to the Aztec Death Whistle and Calaveras. Our story is about an old sea captain who is haunted by a screaming skull that "lives" in a hatbox in a cupboard above his bed. He rambles to an unseen friend (the audience, perhaps) and we learn the horrible origin of his screaming skull.
