This episode is the result of discussions I had with my audience after I published episode 119 about online learning platforms. While some people shared their struggles and dreadful experiences with these platforms, others found great success and were grateful for the opportunities they provided. Despite the differing experiences, they all share a common desire: to build their own businesses and become independent. Even those who initially found success on online platforms eventually aim to transition to teaching on their own terms.
So, in this episode, I'll walk you through a step-by-step plan to transition away from online platforms and build your independent teaching business.

As a teacher business coach, I specialise in helping my clients develop businesses that are not only profitable and sustainable but also bring them genuine joy. In episode 117 of the Get richer, teacher podcast I'm sharing insights into four business models, examining their pros and cons in relation to these three crucial components of a successful teaching business.
Here's my take on these elements:
– Profitability is about earning enough to cover expenses, provide financial security and enhance your overall quality of life.
– Sustainability involves crafting a business model that seamlessly integrates with your lifestyle, allowing you to balance work with personal commitments such as family, hobbies and other responsibilities.
– Enjoyment is subjective, but for many of my clients, it involves maintaining a meaningful connection with their students. Most of them are not willing to completely abandon teaching.
Listen to the episode to learn about the costs and benefits associated with four popular business models: one-to-one teaching, selling digital products, memberships and group programs and which of them is my favourite!

When you're teaching one-to-one, there's a limit to how much you can earn. Even if you do and raise your prices, there's only so many hours in a day. I know it is counterintuitive but in order to scale your business you need to not add more (time, offers, clients) but to start doing less.
You can transition from one-on-one to group classes (I talked about this process in episode 113 of my podcast) but that’s only one way in which you can scale your business work less and earn more.
A scaled business is the business that works for you and makes money even if you’re not involved in every process. But how can you get to that place?
In the newest episode of Get richer, teacher! podcast I talk about three areas that you need to work on to prepare yourself for scaling a business: time, work and business model.
Listen to the episode and learn:
– why you need to spend more time on marketing
– what you need to give yourself permission to do
– why delegating and automation should be a priority when you want to scale
– how I juggle running my business and being a mom.

Sooner or later many language teachers start to think about moving from offering only 1:1 lessons to group programs. But it’s not as simple as grouping together your 1:1 clients based on their CEFR level and telling them „see you on Tuesday at 6 PM”.
First of all, I’m not a fan of creating offers and marketing them based on language proficiency levels. I believe learning languages is not about jumping from one level to another. It’s much more effective to create group programs for clients with similar challenges and needs.
Before you start to create and market your group program you need to do the foundational work – know your audience, then create a minimum viable product and use information from your students to run an effective marketing campaign launch the best possible course.
That’s this week’s episode of Get richer, teacher! podcast I talk all about creating and launching group programs.

Managing a profitable language school goes beyond the simple formula of "more clients, more money”.
Whether you have a brick and mortar school or an online one, there are costs involved. The biggest expense is teachers’ salaries, and rightfully so. They are responsible for your students’s success and satisfaction and I believe you shouldn’t cut corners when it comes to their salaries.
If you can’t afford new equipment, software or even your salary, some things must change.
In episode 112 of Get richer, teacher podcast I talk about:
– the biggest expenses in language schools
– pricing strategy and how can you justify charging more than your competition
– stepping away from teaching to avoid burnout and effectively run the business
– being responsible for your employees future.
Running a language school is not a piece of cake but the right mindset and a little bit of strategic planning, you can pave the way for success and profit.

Probably nobody open their language school to become a marketer. You were first a teacher, then decided to become a business owner and help more students. Maybe you didn’t expect that running a language school will involve so much marketing. It can be exhausting, especially if you’re not sure what sets your business apart from other language schools.
In this episode of Get richer, teacher podcast I talk about
– spreading too thin with your marketing
– competing on price
– your role as a language school owner
– relying on referrals
– the best time to promote your business.
I’ll give you some tips on how to effectively promote your language school online so that you have a consistent flow of new clients and earn good money.

What makes a good language school? As a former owner and manager of language schools I’ve seen a lot! And I believe there are 3 things that your language school needs to call itself a good place.
Leader – that not only puts out fires, create timetables and pay the bills. The visionary and makes space for creativity and growth
People – unfortunately the teachers that actually help the students achieve their goals are often treated like contractors with little to none benefits. I feel it is possible to create a good work environment where teachers are respected and develop their skills.
Community & impact – a good language school can help people on a larger scale by creating better programs, better customer experience and better workspace.

Knowing who your ideal client is makes it easier to create offers and be consistent with your marketing. But how do you find this ideal client?
It’s not only about personality alignment (but yes, you want to work with people who you like). Think about the common struggles and goals that people in your target audience have. Who you enjoy working with and what characteristics they have?Consider their demographics, language level, and even how much they earn. Remember that an ideal student is an existing person who needs your help.
Your marketing and offers should speak directly to your ideal student. Addressing their unique needs and challenges will make your marketing more effective and your offers more relevant.

Just like planning a road trip, building a successful business requires a few key elements. First, you need to ensure that your business is functioning well, just like checking your car before hitting the road. This means having a clear map or goal to work towards, as well as knowing that you have support along the way. Trust me, having someone to keep you company and provide support makes the journey much more enjoyable and easier.
Now, when it comes to setting goals for your business, I believe in focusing on the journey rather than a super specific destination. Instead, break your goals into smaller, more manageable milestones that you can achieve in around three months. These short-term goals will keep you motivated and help you track your progress effectively.
You also need a fully-functioning car, a map and FUEL.
To find out what these are in your own marketing journey, listen to this week's episode!
And if you're interested in making me the co-pilot in your journey, definitely check out the Rocket Fuel here: https://olakowalska.com/rocketfuel

Marketing may seem overwhelming because of the amount of advice out there and especially if you're a teacher (and let's be honest - business has never been part of the curriculum while studying to become a teacher, right?!)
But it's actually quite simple. It's not posting more or having a massive audience that cuts it.
To get started, I recommend conducting an audit of your past marketing efforts. What has worked for you in the past? Have you offered special deals, asked your current clients for referrals, or received recommendations through word of mouth? These insights will help you identify what strategies have brought in clients and guide your future marketing efforts.
Next, let's talk about attraction. Organic posting on social media may not be as effective as you think. In fact, less than 2% of my audience growth came from organic posting. So, it's time to explore other avenues.
Once you've attracted people to your world, it's essential to nurture them. Engage with your audience through regular posting, live sessions, newsletters, and authentic content that showcases your true values.

In this podcast episode, I address seven common mistakes made by freelance language teachers. These mistakes include undercharging for services, neglecting marketing efforts, failing to diversify income, struggling with time management, lacking boundaries, and disregarding self-care. I emphasises the importance of recognising the value of one's services, being proactive in marketing, exploring different income streams, managing time effectively, setting boundaries with clients, and prioritising personal well-being.
Timestamped overview:
[00:00] In this podcast episode, the host discusses the importance of giving and receiving feedback and apologizes in advance if they come across as too blunt.
[01:08] The first mistake freelance teachers make is undercharging for their services and not recognizing the value they bring beyond just language expertise.
[03:08] Neglecting marketing efforts and being passive about finding students is another common mistake made by teachers.
[05:32] Diversifying income is crucial for freelance teachers to move beyond survival mode and explore passive income streams.
[07:20] Teachers often struggle with time management and need to prioritize their needs and find students who can accommodate their preferred teaching schedule.
[09:59] Teachers should not underestimate the time required for business activities and need to make time for marketing and other business-related tasks.
[11:20] Setting boundaries with students and clients is essential for sustainable teaching and business practices.
[13:16] Teachers often overlook their own well-being and sacrifice themselves for others, but it is important to prioritize self-care and set a good example.
[15:46] The host encourages teachers to reflect on these mistakes, make small changes, and start the process of improving their teaching and business practices.

In this podcast episode, I address the common concerns language teachers have about pricing their lessons and products. I emphasise the need for a strategic approach to pricing, highlighting that it is not just a random decision but a way to position oneself in the market and attract the right audience. The host explains that specialising in a certain area or target audience allows teachers to charge higher prices, as it demonstrates expertise and value. They also discuss the importance of understanding the customer journey and communicating the benefits and outcomes of language learning. Overall, the episode encourages teachers to have confidence in their pricing and to continually evaluate and adjust their prices as their business grows.
Make sure that you have a look at my £9 pricing course here to get help in that too!

This episode emphasises the need for language teachers to avoid being pushy or manipulative when selling their services. It highlights the outdated marketing techniques still being used and the importance of understanding the concerns and struggles of potential customers. Building authentic connections and creating educational content that addresses those concerns is recommended. It also encourages teachers to focus on their target audience and create offers that are a right fit for them, rather than just teaching language skills. By understanding their audience and their problems, teachers can sell their services more effectively and enjoy a sustainable and fulfilling business.
The book mentioned in the episode is called Influence by Robert Cialdini.

[3:30] Building authentic connections with your audience helps you understand their struggles and concerns.
[4:30] Avoid teaching via content and focus on creating educational content that solves people's problems related to language.

[7:00] Understand who you're trying to help and what their problems are to create the right offer for them.
[8:30] Selling becomes easier when the marketing and messaging are aligned with your audience's needs.
[10:00] Nurture relationships with your audience by offering free content with an end goal of profitability.
[11:30] Creating a profitable business allows for more freedom to experiment and enjoy teaching.
[12:30] Selling should not be about pushing or manipulating people, but about helping and understanding your audience.

Tune in to the latest episode of the podcast, where Ola dives deep into this topic and shares valuable insights and strategies to help you conquer your sales fears. Here are three key takeaways from the episode:
💡 Takeaway 1: Change your perception of failure: In the world of online business, low sales or a product not selling is seen as information, not a judgment on your worth. Embrace the notion that failures provide valuable feedback and opportunities for growth.
💡 Takeaway 2: Target a specific audience: By choosing a specific audience to target, you can tailor your approach and achieve faster results. This also reduces competition, enhances your understanding of their needs, and allows you to create more effective solutions and products.
💡 Takeaway 3: Embrace discomfort and take action: Our brains are wired to keep us safe and comfortable, but growth and progress require going against this natural tendency. Embrace the discomfort of taking risks and making informed decisions. Don't let fear paralyze you from moving forward.
If you want to understand your tendencies even better try (just for fun!) these two quizzes might help:
The doors to my signature course, 🚀The Rocket (in its new edition called Rocket Accelerator and all focused on diversifying your income) are open until the end of 4/07. Sign up here!
Timestamped overview:
[00:03:09] Teaching experience & variety important in job interviews but not in business, sales require relevant arguments.
[00:05:27] Helping others requires getting to know them, focusing attention. Like one-on-one language study for quicker results. Group settings divide attention, marketing and sales too. Narrow focus benefits specific groups, not exclusion of others.
[00:08:16] Fear of not being good enough or unique enough in business; fear of imposter syndrome and rejection. Realize it's just your brain.
[00:11:25] Invest in Rocket course/tools, take risks, fear of failure in online business. Lack of sales ≠ judgment/feedback on worth.
[00:15:57] Fear of potential failure, hesitation to target specific audience, concern over others' perception, self-doubt, fear of wasted effort. Take action despite fear and discomfort. No alternative solution provided.
[00:17:30] Your brain wants you to stay safe, but you must do the opposite to grow. Negative thoughts are a survival mechanism, not always accurate. You can figure it out, though some situations are clearly dangerous.
[00:21:05] This text describes a money personality quiz by Denise Duffield Thomas that reveals your attitude towards money.
[00:24:49] Choose what serves you, not just what keeps you safe. Safety doesn't guarantee happiness, growth, or prosperity. Food for thought. See you on the Rocket or in the next episode. Good luck!

Now, it’s time to go get richer, teacher!
Here are top five takeaways from this episode:
It's crucial to define what financial freedom means to you. Take the time to reflect on your values, priorities, and goals. Don't just follow advice blindly, but create a plan that aligns with your unique vision.
Building financial freedom requires taking action and being proactive. Don't wait for opportunities to come to you, but try out different income streams, products, and marketing strategies until you find what works for your situation.
Sustainability is key. It's tempting to aim for short-term financial gains, but in the long run, having a stable, predictable income is much more valuable. Focus on creating a business that will last, not just one that makes a quick buck.
Saying "it is what it is" can be dangerous. While acceptance is important, you don't want to feel stuck or hopeless. Recognize when change is possible and desirable, and then take action to make it happen.
Freedom is a multifaceted concept. It's not just about having a lot of money, but about having control over your time, energy, and relationships. Prioritise doing work that you love, treating yourself with kindness, and cultivating a support system that will help you achieve your goals.
Passive income can be a great way to contribute to your vision of financial freedom. Now, it’s time to go get richer, teacher!
In this episode, I talked about unlearning some things that might be standing in the way of your success in selling stuff in your business. Here are the six key points we covered:
seeing your work through the prism of educational value
focusing on the language rather than people's problems and needs
focusing on the ‘what’ rather than ‘for who’
being passive in your marketing
taking responsibility for people’s results
letting mindset gremlins win

Timestamped overview:
[00:01:00] Summer is a good time to develop a business with passive income.
[00:06:19] Focus on building an audience beyond just educational content, mindset shift needed to see value beyond teaching. Need to separate teaching and business identity.
[00:11:05] Social media success doesn't guarantee goals; unless it's for sponsorship or influence. Sustainable income and generating leads are more important. Content made to appeal to the masses can be too generic; don't focus too much on language.
[00:15:44] Be specific about the people you serve. English teaching requires micro or nano specificity. Other languages easier to stand out.
[00:17:11] Narrow marketing is effective, generic marketing doesn't work. Relevant messaging is key.
[00:20:37] A website/profile alone won't generate interest; be clear on target audience, listen to them and be proactive in marketing
[00:25:56] Bro marketing promises unrealistic results disregarding individual differences and taking responsibility for others' results is toxic and undermines independence.
[00:29:08] Passive income allows success and helping people at a larger scale. Don't let fears hold you back. Teachers can overcome limiting beliefs.

As with every journey, the beginnings are usually quite exciting (that's when you start freelancing), but it might be hard to progress from the freelancing world's plains and step into the more hilly area with digital, passive offers. Not to worry, though. I'm going to tell you precisely what you need to do to reach your destination.
One of the steps in your journey might be running an MVP (listen to see what that is) in form of a workshop. If that idea sounds fun, you can join us in my Workshop workshop training to learn how to set one up! Join us here!

In this episode I'm chatting to Nicola Prentis. Nicola teaches beginners and especially educators and writers how to put their money to work by demystifying investing and giving them the tools, knowledge and mindset to take charge of their finances without the help (and expense) of a financial advisor.
That sounds amazing, doesn't it? I'm literally an A0 level of a beginner at investing so I asked Nicola some relevant questions that you may also have:
Since this podcast is called 'Get richer' teacher' and Nicola is a great advocate of a saying 'Rich people don’t work for money, their money works for them.' we really had lots to talk about. The goal for both of us is the same - helping people get richer. Let's look at it from a different perspective today, then, shall we?
Listen to this fascinating chat to learn more about investing, stock market , money mindset and more money-related stuff that doesn't have to feel scary or overwhelming at all.
If you want to find out more about Nicola, follow her on LinkedIn and check out her website: https://chilledinvestor.com/ to find out more about what she offers!
Investing in your business can feel AMAZING - but only if you know you’re putting money into the right things.
So, how do you know WHAT the right things are? And WHEN should you invest in them? Well, my advice is to consider what you need in order to take the next step in your business. I will never regret investing in:
copywriting
automations to save time and have more bandwidth in my business
my website
my Virtual Assistant
and ONE MORE thing that I talk about at the end. Listen now to find out my reasoning behind it and the bonus investemnt I will never regret making!
In the last episode of the year I collected all my reflections and things I wish I had known at the beginning of 2022. I dig deep into what some of the mistakes I made were and what I would have done and how I would have approached things differently. Hope this will give you some inspiration on how to approach 2023 in your teaching business and life.
In this training I talk about the 7 crucial steps you need to take in order t build a teaching business of your dreams!
Listen and let me know where you are on your journey!
In this episode I wanted to talk about who we assume we are as teachers and what roles we actually play in our students' lives and in the society. I also mention how we should be thinking about ourselves, why it's so difficult not to focus on external circumstances and what we can do to actually make the biggest impact on the world (hint: it also has to do with us!)
The two books I mention are '101 essays that will change the way you think' and 'The montauin is you' by Brianna Wiest
In this episode I've decided to dissect the main problems of the language teaching world.
Have a listen and let me know if you agree!
I get it. You are serious about the whole business thing. You've committed to it and it's hard to accept that sometimes things are not working the way you want them to. But is it possible that you are actually the only person standing in the way to your success? Because of your own perfectionism or high expectations?
In this episode I wanted you to pause and reflect on this and if you're not sabotaging yourself by putting too much pressure on yourself. Listen to it to find ou if it might be true and how to be a bit more compassionate to yourself.
Ok, so you've been doing this business thing or freelancing for a while and you're ready for more. But what are the actual things to focus on that will help you level up?
Listen to this episode to find out why:
should be your priorities now!
You may still be wondering - why would anyone pick you as their teacher if there are so many other offering the same thing(s) that you do.
You may still think that when you offer your services to lots of different people, more people will come.
You may also think that the more you've got on offer, the more people you can help.
In this episode, I'm debunking those MYTHS and telling you exactly what to do if you want to stand out as a language teacher online. Listen now!
And it's still not too late to sign up for my FREE webinar where I will teach you 10 practical ways to find students for your language classes. Sign up here: https://olakowalska.com/10wayswebinar

If you’re thinking about leaving your school and starting your own teaching business, you’ve probably got HUNDREDS of questions spinning around your head.

I won’t deny that starting a business is a bit scary. BUT it’s also extremely exciting, and I know that you CAN do it!
You know it’s the right decision to leave school, and you’re excited about it. But then you realise that you don’t know what to do next!
Don’t panic! Listen to my newest podcast episode to learn what you need to do to turn your vision of building a teaching business into your reality.

So many teachers ask me - I know about newsletters and email marketing, but should I really be doing that?! What would I even write about?!
If you're one of them, then don't worry, I've got you!
In this episode I talk about:
Enjoy!
Teachers sometimes talk to me and say ‘but nothing is working for me’! And I totally understand the frustration.
But have you ever wondered that maybe you’re just focusing on the wrong things?
In this episode I'm dissecting the common things that people focus on that aren't exactly serving them, such as:
And a few more! Give it a listen to check whether if you're focusing on the right things!
If I know one thing about all of us education-nerds is that we LOVE BOOKS!
Books have been a massive part of my self-develoment and business journey so in this episode I share 12 of them that have had the biggest influence on me.
Some of them include:
Get inspired by listening to me talk about reasons why those books were so important to me and get reading!
Why is it so hard to stay consistent in building a business?
Why do you lose motivation so often?
Why do you think 'you will never get there'?
Why is it so hard to not focus on improving stuff all the time?
Why is it so hard not to work so much?
Why is it so hard to charge more?
Entrepreneurial mindset.
It's a set of skills and a muscle that needs to be developed. Nobody is born with it. And in this episode I answer some of those questions and show you how to work on it. Listen now!
So how would it sound if I told you that you can work 3-4 days a week? You’d probably think I’m mad. You’d think that you’d have to work 12 hour days all the rest of the week or that it’s simply impossible! You’ll probably think that you won’t be able to afford it - that it would be just part-time work = less pay.
Well, I used to think that too. And most of my clients did.
So today I wanted to show you that you not only can, but SHOULD limit your ‘contact hours’. That you can work less with students and that there are other things that are as important and that you don’t have to spend all your time either teaching or lesson planning.
Curious how? Listen to this week's episode!
How many times did you want to raise your prices but were afraid that people would leave? How many times did you give someone a discount out of fear that they would leave? How many times did you get a bit desperate about money in your teaching business?
I’m going to let you ponder on these questions and offer a reframe in case you’ve ever been stressed about charging, pricing and generally selling your lessons.
Listen to this week's podcast to get some useful insights on this highly-triggering topic for teachers!
We don't talk often enough about how great and impactful of a job teaching is. So let's change that!
Listen to this episode of you:
💯 know that your work is important and want to feel even better about it
💯 want a confidence boost for September
💯 need a reminder why what you do is more important than the topic that you teach
I'm a firm believer that we should stop focusing on our weaknesses, constantly asking for feedback in order to improve.
We should be working with our strengths predominantly! And this episode will talk to you about the rationale behind it
Selling feels icky for many teachers!
Mainly because we've had bad experiences with being sold to ad don't want to be seen as those pushy, manipulative salesy salespeople (that's a lot of sales, I know haha!)
And that's why learning how to sell starts with your mindset!
We need to get rid of those old stories and beliefs around sales and see selling our services or courses as HELPING.
I talk about that and give a few tips on how to sell in this new podcast episode! Enjoy!
Money is a tricky subject for us, teachers. If not to all of us in general!
In this episode, I give you some ideas on how to think about managing money in your business so that it can support you and your lifestyle.
Listen now to get inspired on how to have a better relationship with your money!
I know being on social media is a pain. It's forever changing and you probably cannot keep up with the trends. I feel the same.
But the opportunities that your online presence and visibility can bring are priceless.
Rather than getting stuck at 'I'm afraid to show up' (because perhaps you're scared of judgment?) think 'My online presence allows me to connect with people that I can help!'
Rather than comparing yourself with others, think 'I've learned so much about social media already and there will always be so much more to learn' so the only person to compare to is yourself from the past (This reframe was created by my ex-Rocketer Katie!)
Instead of 'I'm not interested in social media and have never been active on it', think 'Social media is a free marketing tool that I can use for my benefit and the way I see fit!'
And if you want to learn more about being visible and why it's important, listen to the newest podcast episode!
'If people want to study with me, they can just check out my website and see what I offer'
Oh I've heard it so many times from teachers that I work with! Teachers assume that if they exist (eg have a website and a social media profile) that's enough to attract paying clients to their business. But then they don't see any results. They just sit and wait and think: 'But all the information is out there!'
Well, I could say that that's literally the definition of what marketing IS NOT.
Marketing is the art of creating tension, provoking, and making people think! And it needs to be proactive.
And that's what I talk about in my newest podcast episode. Have a listen to get inspired on how to market your teaching business effectively!
I know, I know. You want your tips and tricks and how-tos on how to build and scale a teaching business, so will I just shut up about MINDSET.
Nope, not gonna happen!
Your mindset is EVVVVERYTHING.
If things don't go according to the plan, if your launch fails, if you're stressed about money, if you haven't had any students enquiring about lessons, if your content strategy doesn't work, do you know what's going to help?
If you do, that's great, because I don't.
What I know is that your mindset will HELP YOU DEAL WITH THE CRISIS.
So, if you please, let me tell you why and how that's going to work. Listen to this week's episode and let me know what limiting beliefs you still have about yourself or your teaching business!
Here are a few questions I wanted to ask you:
Basically, all I want to know is DO YOU HAVE ANY AUTOMATED SYSTEMS in your business, or do you just go with the flow?
Your business should be EASY, AUTOMATED and bring you money and satisfaction. I'm not saying that setting up those systems won't require work but it's definitely worth it!
Let me help you by pointing you to the direction of the systems in your business that you need in my newest podcast episode.

Welcome to this new awesome series of short juicy episodes of my podcasts that will teach you the 8 fundamentals of successful teaching business.
This week is all about your offers! So many teachers run their social media profiles thinking that their job is to teach people more language. And then hope for the best - aka that students will come knocking at their door when they've seen them teach a few useful expressions...
Not really! You need to be clear on YOUR OFFER - what you want your students to pay for. Whether it is 1:1s, group classes, courses, digital programs, or e-books, you need to make sure that they know that something is in store for them!
There's no point in collecting random followers if you don't know what you're going to offer to them. So listen to this week's episode to find out:

Instagram stories have been my favourite social media feature ever. I so all sorts via my stories: educate, entertain, engage, build relationships, sell, create conversations, make people feel seen and heard, create relatability. They have got so much potential!
And yet, so many teachers don’t use them! Or use them just to repost their grid content. I think the problem comes down to people thinking that it’s enough to build a big following and then start selling your teaching services to them. And unfortunately, that’s not the case.
The missing element between audience building and selling is NURTURING. And that’s what stories are great for (as well as selling!) Btw - it’s more effective to sell on stories than in posts or reels! The conversions can reach up to 25%!

You’ve made a decision to go solo, find your own students, and be independent and you soon realised that you should start being active on social media.
Or maybe you’ve been doing it for a while, a few months or more? Some days it works and some it doesn’t. Sometimes you’re on a high for being able to post and feel like you could conquer the world and that student inquiries will be never-ending from now on. And some days it feels completely hopeless and you question the point of social media altogether.

Content is king. And video content is... an EMPEROR!
It was hight time myself and Kate @balancing_teachers collaborated so I invited her to talk about a highly relevant subject to online teachers trying to develop their business using social media - video content.
Kate is an online Teacher Mentor and a teacher who runs her own language business and has had great results from posting regular and valuable video content. She also shares her knowledge and expertise with others regularly. We're both very aligned in our approach to helping teachers develop business mindset and skills so this chat was a pure pleasure!
Our chat revolved around Kate's long journey on Instagram, what her first and biggest mistakes were and most importantly video mistakes that people still make on reels, stories and other types of content.

So you've decided to niche down, yay! You have your specialty, you can charge more and work with your specific people helping them improve. Seems like a dream, right?
But then doubt cripples in and you may say to yourself:
‘What if someone outside of this group wants to work with me?’ I have to help them!’
‘What if they want something I don’t offer anymore but want to pay me?!’
‘I still have my old General English students who have been paying the same rate for years - I can’t change that now!’
‘But if someone wants to pay me, I can’t say no to money!’

I've been inspired to record this episode by one of you who asked me how to set boundaries and look after your mental health when teaching/running a teaching business. I feel that we don't talk enough about this enough. mental health is still a taboo and setting boundaries is still a problem for a lot of people (especially for women I dare say).
So in today's episode, I'm offering some tips and shifts in thinking about mental health and setting healthy boundaries.
But most importantly, I talk about why it's crucial that we prioritise ourselves and why it's our job to protect our resources.

⭐️THE BIGGEST MISTAKE THAT TEACHERS MAKE WHEN TRYING TO MARKET THEMSELVES
They don't understand how they serve their clients.
There are so many misconceptions about marketing when it comes to marketing teaching services. Instagram is full of teachers who simply teach bits f language every day and expect people to see the value of their service in that. Unfortunately, it doesn't work this way.
Marketing is a journey. Marketing is subtle. Marketing is a story.
Listen to this episode to find out about common mistakes teachers make when trying to promote their services and how to avoid them. Gain an understanding of the journey you need to take a potential client on in order for them to eventually buy from you and for them to stay with you! The process has 3 simple steps. Yet most teachers don't get it.

⭐️HOW TO STOP WORKING YOUR AS* OFF AND NOT FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT!
We all understand the importance of working smarter. But we somehow resist it!
I find myself a lazy person, actually - I half-ar*e lots of things, I nap a lot so therefore I need to have systems in place that keep this business of mine going.
I think that step one is actually realising that it's OK not to work hard. It's not making us more worthy, deserving, or noble. So let's make it easier for ourselves, shall we?
I share my 6 tips on how teachers can work smarter and share insights into my personal day-to-day work routines.

🚀HAVE YOU EVER LAUNCHED ANYTHING?🚀
'Launch' is like a buzzword in the online business world. I personally love the energy of it!
There are lots of factors that come within a launch - the prep, the testing, the offer creation, the strategy, the planning... It's quite easy to get lost. But I've got your back!
If you've never launched before or if you're just getting familiar with the idea - make sure you listen to this episode to feel less overwhelmed by it and to have an understanding of some basics of launching.
And then let me know what you've launched or are planning to launch in your teaching business 👇👇👇
If you're ready to get some help with finding your perfect audience, connecting with them, creating a perfect offer for them, promoting, launching, and selling then my new group program ' The ELT Rocket🚀' is just perfect for you. Message me now to ask about the details because the sign-ups close very soon and the course starts on the 9th February!
⭐️ This episode is quite magical ⭐️
When I was recording it, I felt tingling in my chest and feet. It felt so good to remind myself WHY I wanted to run a teaching business in the first place.
And I so badly wanted to share it with you. This list of 10 reasons why you may want to have a teaching business is based on what YOU said and I expanded on and it turned into a fantastic daydreaming session (not that it can't be true!)
Give it a listen especially today, on a blue Monday (who believes in that bulls*it anyway!)
And let me know which of the reasons is YOUR reason!
If you're ready to build a successful and profitable ELT business to gain freedom and financial independence and are fed up with working for schools, then I've got something for you. My course 'ELT ROCKET🚀' is launching this week. Message me '🚀' if you want to know the details and have access to pre-launch BONUSES!
⭐️ YOU WILL NEVER BELIEVE THIS!⭐️
Oh, wait. Actually, you will. We all know that the ELT industry kinda sucks. And I'm not saying it to complain. Although, as a person from Poland I'm a PRO at moaning!
I'm saying this to raise awareness, motivate, empower and kick your bum!
I've recorded this episode full of conflicting emotions - anger and enthusiasm, annoyance and hope. So if you want to know what, in my opinion, are the 5 things that we all know about but don't talk about enough in the English Teaching world, listen to this episode.
Be prepared for a rant about native-speakerism, the worth of the industry on the global market, not seeing the bigger picture, and quick fixes that we constantly expect and give out.
Don't want to give away too much - listen and take part in the discussion with me in the comments.
The episode is available on all podcasting platforms, in my bio and here: https://olakowalska.com/episode20/
And you can still sign up for my 'Get richer, teacher!' challenge that starts on 17/01/2022 to tackle at least one of those uncomfortable truths about the ELT world. Let's change the reality for ourselves and have an impact on others. Sign up here, I'd love to have you there!
⭐️ ARE YOU GIVING YOUR STUDENTS ENOUGH TOOLS SO THEY CAN LEARN THE LANGUAGE INDEPENDENTLY?⭐️
Language coaching is not a new concept but certainly has gained popularity in the last few years. And no wonder. To me, it's what the ELT world always needed - giving the power back to the learner, taking learner autonomy to the next level, and equipping people with tools and independence to reach mastery by themselves.
And I've found a real shining star in this matter - Csabi @smartspeakenglish. Originally from Hungary, a language learner (fluent in 5 languages) himself he shows his students every day what commitment, the right mindset, discipline, and attitude to learning can do.
This was one of the most aligned chats I've ever had with a guest because we definitely see eye to eye on many topics in regards to learning, teaching, and business too! I personally see great potential in language coaching as a business model.
Csabi's success as a language coach and an online business owner is also due to his brilliant ability to be himself, to bring up important topics in a funny way but also to talk about what really matters. I personally admire his consistency and dedication to the cause. He admitted that his mission is to change to ELT world - and I truly believe he's on his way to do so very soon!

10 LESSONS I'VE LEARNED ABOUT BUSINESS IN 2021

So I wanted to share with you the lessons, the good and the bad things I learned that will definitely dictate all my actions in 2022. Because I know 2022 has the potential to be even better!

ARE YOU ALLOWING YOURSELF TO BE CREATIVE?
Allow creativity in your life to bring in a massive ripple effect on all its areas. Not just teaching!
We had a fascinating conversation about why and how people struggle with creativity and how it changes throughout our lives. Simone is super passionate about creativity in general and she offered some great advice on how to learn to be more creative. Some of here tips were not obvious at all! We obviously touched on creativity in teaching and how she helps teachers be more creative for their own and their students' benefit.
You cannot miss this episode! I guarantee it will spark creativity in you instantly!

Can telling stories be an effective method of marketing?
Of course, it can! Stories come naturally, stories aren't forced, stories are life. Stories allow us to be more relatable, more authentic, and more connected.
And what's best about them is that we all carry stories inside of us. We simply have to be brave enough to share them.
Listen to this episode for ideas on how stories can move the needle in your teaching business.

Listen to this episode for a great dose of inspiration and some real food for thought around work-life balance and limiting beliefs.
This time I interviewed Racheal Roberts @liferesourceful. What was meant to be a chat about stress and work-life balance only, turned into a great conversation about our general observation of the ELT industry and specifically the limiting beliefs that ELT professionals still have.
Rachael shared some great ideas and tips for teachers and other professionals and offered some great reflections on the idea of work-life balance, which some of you might find surprising!
I personally learned so much from this chat! I'm really grateful I got to collaborate (again) with someone so wise and who is helping people in our industry improve their professional lives so much.
Also - best wishes to Rachel whose birthday it is today on the day of the premiere! :)

I dedicate this episode to my wonderful coach @_samanthahearne_ who showed me the world of possibilities, is my greatest business cheerleader, believed in me when I was having doubts, and helps me kick ass online EVERY BLOODY DAY. She is the sole reason why I will never not have a coach again.
What coaching does to you when you take the leap of faith and commit to the process is absolutely unspeakable. There's no looking back once you've been coached. Your mindset changes, your energy shifts, your strengths get heightened and progress accelerated.
Why accumulate more and more knowledge that you're not going to use anyway or that you're likely to find repetitive and not really relevant to your needs if you can find a person who will see and bring out THE BEST in you and facilitate, guide and empower you to become resourceful for your own benefit and progress?
There's only one condition, though. Listen to the episode to find out what it it!

Here's another dose o inspiration for you! I've decided to interview an absolute gem of a woman - Erin O'Byrne from @everythingeflteacher
Erin has been teaching and training teachers for years. A couple of years ago she and a colleague of hers started a podcast. Even though her colleague left, she's been serving EFL teachers from around the world by sharing her knowledge, tips and with in her podcast on her own. And she is so natural at it!!!
My personal favourites are her episodes about creativity and the one about RuPaul (her personal little obsession). Tune in and listen to this funny, motivating chat to find out more about:
Who knows, maybe you'll get inspired to start your own podcast?! Let us both know if it's ever crossed your mind!

Ever felt lonely while working online and for yourself?
I this episode I dissect loneliness - why it affects us no matter what personality type we are. Most people tend to get lonely to a different extent - we all feel it in various ways as introverts and as extroverts.
As an extrovert, I thought I would be more prone to loneliness when I started working online and as my own boss. But the reality turned out to be surprisingly different!
Tune in to listen to me talking about:
why we get lonely
why even introverts get lonely
what are the potential risks associated with loneliness
some tips to prevent and deal with loneliness online
Make sure you listen till the very end to find out about the way I dealt with loneliness in my online business and how you can do it too!

Do you ever get lonely online? Let me know in the comments!
Teachers are special, extraordinary, brilliant, and creative. And they make amazing entrepreneurs!
One of the living examples of it is my latest podcast guest Michelle Smit @digiteach! Michelle is an ESL teacher turned teacher business coach who proves that once a teacher, always a teacher! She always felt the need to educate and be of service so turned her language teaching job into educating others on how to build online businesses with online courses. And damn is she successful!
In this fascinating episode, we talk about all things her journey to her dream life of freedom, GREAT money, and fulfillment, and how she ended up moving from her native South Africa (I mean if you can't find good reasons to listen to the episode, at least do it for the accent...) to the Netherlands and achieved so much before ever turning 30! This girl is a true inspiration!!!
We also had an amazing deep dive talking about mindset, copycats, internal work that is involved in building a business and many more things. Come and let us have this conversation in your ears - you won't regret it and will definitely feel more empowered to take action because you too can make a great teacher entrepreneur!

IMPOSTER SYNDROME
A definition: imposter syndrome, also called perceived fraudulence, involves feelings of self-doubt and personal incompetence that persist despite your education, experience, and accomplishments. To counter these feelings, you might end up working harder and holding yourself to ever higher standards. (healthline.com)
Most people feel it but usually, it comes with a feeling that we're the only ones. Why?
In this episode, I talk about different types of imposter syndrome that you might experience and share which one I am as well. I also offer some advice on how to reframe some of the beliefs that come with it!
Let me know what you think and how bad is your imposter syndrome when you've listened!

Just DO the thing!
People will always have opinions about what you do. But that's none of your business! Just do your thing, try that idea and see how it feels afterward.
I had an amazing chat with Jo Gakonga - a teacher trainer, CELTA tutor, Cambridge assessor, University lecturer, and online teacher trainer and entrepreneur. She hosts a YouTube channel and her own website with professional development courses for teachers of English as a foreign language( https://www.elt-training.com/). She is the living example of the fact that you can and should try things out as it's likely most people will LOVE them.
Jo has had an amazing journey in the ELT world. Most recently she quit her Uni job to go on a road trip around Europe. She told me she wanted to try out making short videos for Instagram about her digital nomad life and SHE IS! Check them out on her profile @elttraining - lots of fun and bits of wisdom from Jo's travels.
But most importantly, Jo proves to us that ideas are only useful when you act on them. She has created a community of engaged fans online because she provides value and is not afraid to try new things out (including new higher prices)!

So you've got your social media profile set up. You start posting and are even starting to show your face on stories or in other forms of video content. Woo hoo!
But are you actually connecting with your ideal audience?
In this episode, I share some great tips on how to make sure that you do. The real secret is to start thinking about what THEY need, rather than on what YOU want to say.
I won't tell you more because it's a really short and practical episode that you can listen to while doing the dishes.

We all know consistency is important. But how do we actually achieve it?
In this episode, I had a great pleasure talking to the fabulous duo from @hotshotenglish - Naomi and Clare. They both created a unique brand in the online ELT space and are definitely super consistent with every aspect of it!
We talked about their journey to building Hotshotenglish and how it ties in with their other commitments in life - including teaching, teacher training a nearly full-time job, kids - that's a LOT! But they still plough on, show up and never give up! CONSISTENCY is absolutely key for them.
Naomi and Clare are long time friends and even though they actually live in different countries they managed to share the responsibilities of running their Instagram profile perfectly. Their colours are outstanding, the content highly relevant to their audience and they are just being themselves so it rarely feels like a chore. It helps that they both have years of experience in ELT :)
I am fascinated by their journey, progress and plans for the future. Make sure you listen till the end to find out what they're cooking behind the scenes!

Let us know whether you struggle with consistency in your online presence?
This one is very practical!
This episode was inspired by a few of my ELTpreneurs (members of my exclusive community for ELT professionals) who are either building or already have ELT businesses online (sometimes also offline!) where they get their community feel, support, training, and accountability.
Some of them are only just starting out and I'm sure there are some other people who could benefit from those tips as well. So here's my beginners' guide to a new online ELT business. Listen to it, share with friends and let me know where you are in your ELT business-building journey!
I also prepared all those tips for you in a written form and named it your 'ELT business starter checklist' that you can download for free on my website: https://olakowalska.kartra.com/page/eltbizchecklist

In this episode, I had an inspiring chat with the amazing Deepika from @acquireeng. I absolutely loved getting to know her better and finding out about her teaching journey.
The topics that came up in our chat were really deep and inspiring. We started talking about the magic of feeling that teaching is your vocation.
Then we moved on to our perception of Instagram and how it changed over the years. We both felt that Instagram is not a platform for educators or people who offer actual valuable knowledge. But we changed our minds when we started seeing people post some amazing stuff and met some really inspiring people and eventually when we met each other!
Deepika describes how her journey with Instagram looked, how come she still doesn't feel very confident even though she is so active there and proves one rule that I always repeat: Do it despite the fear and before you are ready! She is the living example of the fact that it is possible!
Deepika runs a really original account where she obviously talks about English language studying but also touches on reading as her favourite language skill that she likes helping her students develop and some important social issues as well. She is very engaged with her community and really makes the ELT world a better place with her attitude, original approach and positive attitude. Give her a follow and make sure to check out her Sunday Clubhouse lounge for teachers. It's really cool!
What an honour to have a guest like that who clearly stands out in ELT (even if she doesn't always believe she does)!

People assume that business is just business - it either works or it doesn't.
But there is so much more to it! And it all starts with your mindset and energy. If you're not energetically ready for success you will not be successful.
Mindset is a muscle - it can be worked on, flexed, exercised but people don't see it as a necessity. While in fact, it is absolutely inevitable if you really want to receive success, abundance, all the things you want and build your dream life.
Mindset starts with realising that it is A THING. It is important, it is necessary to admit that without being in the right frame of mind, even the best strategies, courses and other forms of support will not work!
And that's why I talk about working on your limiting beliefs so much! I believe the work on your business starts with you! There are so many of them for us, teachers,
And many others. And the last one, especially, can be addressed NOW!
I'm now launching a brand new club for ELT entrepreneurs called ELTpreneurs! It's a membership for people who need accountability, support from other like-minded people, and ME as your mentor, regular training, your own membership area, and exclusive group, group coaching sessions, weekly Q&As, expert sessions, and many many more! Teachers are poor.
Simple AF. That's just the reality, the way things are, the status quo.
BUT DOES IT HAVE TO BE?
I this episode, I provide insight into why teachers are so undervalued and underpaid (plain guesses still because I genuinely DON'T KNOW). Everything speaks against that notion - teachers make the world a better place, they take years to qualify (usually), they have a mission, a vision, a deeper calling, and do their jobs selflessly. Why do they not get compensated for that?
You may have similar reflections to mine on this, but what's new in my perspective is that I understand how deeply rooted this problem is and I offer solutions and tips on how to get out of that crappy situation! Because the change starts in us, in our classrooms, and online Zoom rooms.
Because, in fact, the only people responsible for our shitty pay, is us.

Can you stand out in ELT by just being YOU? Of course, you can!
In this episode, I invited my ex-colleague-turned-friend and probably a twin sister in some other life, Maddie Boldero Rito, for a chat. She is a ball of energy just like me and kindly agreed to talk to me about her journey in the ELT world and what her biggest lessons have been so far.
Maddie has been in the industry since 2007 as a teacher, a manager, a teacher trainer who has always been able to recognise what she wants which proved a useful skill. Her extraordinary optimism is her personal magnet and she used it many times in the classroom and managerial experience as her leverage. She is also known for her professionalism, hard-working attitude and knowing what she really wants. She's now in the middle of another career pivot which she sees as an exciting opportunity. Fingers crossed for that, Maddie! You can follow Maddie's journey at @anotherbunchofacronyms on Instagram!
Make sure to listen till the very end where Maddie shares what she thinks it means to stand out in ELT and how you can achieve that!
WOO-HOO, what a chat! Perfect to lift your mood for sure! :)
Go on, give it a listen and let us both know your thoughts!
Picture this.
We're in a feedback session on a CELTA course. I'm giving feedback to my trainee on how she's dealt with a pronunciation issue in her class (she made an obvious mistake). She looks at me with a lot of doubt in her eyes, at some point she rolls her eyes and doesn't actually take any of my words seriously. Next time she makes the same mistake and uses the argument 'that's what we, native speakers, say'.
I'm a qualified teacher, ex-manager in a language school, ELT business owner, and a Cambridge-qualified teacher trainer. She doesn't care.
So if you're bored of the native versus non-native speakers in ELT debate then you may as well be bored of feminism. Because it's exactly the same. We still need to talk about it and we need our own activists. It's still extremely unequal.
Unfortunately, people interpret the activism and support of non-native speakers as diminishing towards native speakers. That often comes from their own insecurities. But we need to stop thinking that giving more attention or recognition to one group means taking it away from the other. LEVEL PLAYING FIELD, anyone?
This episode touches on the obvious aspects of the problem but I also wanted to add my own passionate voice to the discussion. I share stories, reflections, statistics, thoughts, and ACTION POINTS for all of us.
Give it a listen and let me know your thoughts. Have you ever been discriminated against as a non-native speaker? What do you do to level the playing field for yourself or for others?
