It's possible to convert to a way of thinking, to convert to a list of rules, to convert to a set of practices, to convert to a religion but never follow Jesus. Philip uses the story of the older son in Luke 15 to describe how each of us could be in church but fail to know Jesus.
What does it look like to have a father with a deep, abiding, unending love? Using the story of the father in the prodigal illustration, Philip contrasts earthly fathers and God the Father. Philip covers the following points in his notes: He [the father] loved him too much to restrain him, he loved him too much to rescue him before he repented, he loved him too much to reject him when he returned, he loved both sons, but only one would receive it.
We all have a story. This is the story of a son who was completely wrecked and humbled by the choices in his life. The triumph of this story is that through his humbleness, he recognized the need for repentance. The younger son's change of perspective fostered the forgiveness and restoration the son experienced with his father. NOTES: The younger son rejected his father, rebelled against his father's ways, then reached an all-time low, came back and repented then received forgiveness and restoration. - Luke 15:11-20
What does it take to impact our neighborhoods, our communities, and our world? Check out the following message as Jeff explores four points that will launch us into making a difference in the lives around us.
What does it mean to have family in Christ? In the message on mission, Philip covers the Biblical aspects of family using passages from Corinthians and Ephesians. Namely, We have a specific purpose, we are not alone, we are equipped and deployed, and we exist to change the world.
We expect God to do great things in our lives but we often step in to take God's place. God can redeem any situation but it requires a shift on our part. To redeem the things we struggle with we must, refuse to take God’s place, always seek God’s perspective and embrace God’s grace. In the last message of the Upcycling series, Philip uses to story of Joseph to speak on God's perspective, God's grace, and the things we do to sabotage our growth. What can God redeem for you today? How can we pray for you?
Philip uses Joseph's story and Genesis 42:6 – 44:34 to describe forgiveness. Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting or even trusting again. Forgiveness means letting go of the right to hurt back, grieving losses so that they don’t control us, letting others feel forgiven, and must include more than a one-time decision.
How long have you waited for a prayer or question to be answered? What does waiting on God do to our character? Do you grow anxious or more patient? Philip uses the story of Joseph to highlight that waiting on God will, make a way where there isn’t a way, tear down walls that keep us trapped, grow confident in God's direction, be given the desires of our heart, and begin to see God's greater plan.
How often has life been unfair? Whether a sudden tragedy, an illness, or circumstance, most people know that life is not fair. Using the story of Joseph, Philip expands on where to focus when life isn't fair. We can choose to embrace the opportunity for growth, glorify God even in the dungeons, look for ministry opportunities. don’t settle for the dungeons, expect God to be good, even when life isn’t, and know that God is faithful even when others aren’t.
How hard is it to resist temptations? How much are you willing to risk to do the right thing? Will you risk your job, your friendship, or your wealth to make the choice that God wants you to make? In the third message of the Upcycling series, Philip uses the story of Joseph to demonstrate resisting temptations and the willingness to look towards God for integrity instead of people.
What are some patterns which trap us in how we think or react? Using the story of Joseph, Philip describes how we become trapped by patterns of, rejection, betrayal, and deception. Choosing freedom from these patterns, to break the cycle of inherited prisons, requires choosing to trust, choosing to be defined by God, and choosing to live for God no matter the past.
How do we defeat prisons rooted in fear, labels, or circumstances? Philip uses Genesis 37:1-11 and the story of Joseph to describe how we become trapped by prisons of abandonment, favoritism, and rejection. Defeating these inherited prisons requires looking towards God for unconditional love, freedom, and wholeness.
Aaron Read delivers our first message of 2017 with a discussion on hope. Hope is not a feeling, wishful thinking, or blind faith. Hope is the "desire something with confident expectation of its fulfillment." Aaron uses verses from Colossians, Hebrews, and others to describe the hope from Christ's perspective
Philip delivers the Christmas Eve message for 2016 using Matthew 2:1-12, 16. Philip highlights why the Magi took the journey to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
What was the mindset of Christ? What do we see by his example? Philip uses Philippians 2:1-13 to first explain that, Jesus stepped down into a life of submission, service, and sacrifice. Second we see that we will fail to have the same mind as Christ if we are stuck in unresolved hurts, are driven by selfish ambition, have a need to impress others, and become wrapped up in our own interests. By Jesus' example we see that stepping down is the pathway to greatness and that it's not just about checking off a list, it's about shifting our desire to one that mirrors Christ's mindset.
What did Jesus seek to do while here with us? In part 2 of the Christmas at Family series, Aaron uses Luke 19:1-10 to highlight three primary reasons for Jesus' birth. Jesus came to seek and save the lost by seeing the lost, speaking to the lost and spending time with the lost.
Who is Jesus? In the first message of the Christmas at Family Series, Philip gives 6 truths about Jesus. Focusing on passages from John 1:1-5, 10-14, Philip highlights that Jesus always existed, is with God and is God, is the source of life, is the answer to the worlds darkness, suffered and died so that we might live, and knows all our struggles because he's been there.
How do we endure tough times? In part 10 of the James series, Philip uses James 5: 7-20 to highlight four things which will help us through tough times. Practicing patience, guarding your heart, relying on prayer, and not giving up on each other all add to a focus which allows us to change our perspective in tough times.
What are five foolish things that prevent us from becoming rich towards God? In part 9 of the James series, Philip uses James 4:13-5:6 to highlight how, leaving God out of your plans, hoarding, instead of sharing, not paying your debts, living in luxury without generosity, and forgetting that Jesus is the prize, not wealth causes us to places ourselves above God.
What are the signs that you are losing the battle when it comes to your character and spiritual growth? Philip uses James 4: 1-12 to provide examples of how you might be losing the battle within, how to starting winning the battle within, and how winning the battle within starts to grow your relationships.
According to the Bible, what is wisdom? How do you become wise? How do you know if you're wise? Philip uses James 3:13-18 to provide a view on wisdom from God's perspective.
Words have the power to bring life and to take life. Philip uses James 3:1-12 to highlight the need for God to control how we use words. Without God, words can run and ruin our lives and we are powerless to control our words. Our words are a window into our heart, we need God to purify and fill us so that our words may bring life.
True faith is more than talk, good intentions and knowing the right things. True faith will lead to actions that are motivated by love not shuddering, that flow from friendship with God and that are empowered by the Spirit of God.
Favoritism reflects the root of choices to treat one group of people better than other groups. When the church uses favoritism, we glorify the wrong things, we forget our own poverty, and we fail to reflect our new nature. Playing favorites with ethnic groups, social groups, or racial groups elevates our personal choice over Jesus Christ.
We need to be more that just casual believers. How do we go past a shallow faith? Philip focuses on three things that move us past a shallow faith; hearing, seeing, and obeying the word of God.
Philip delivers 5 practical steps for resisting temptation. The steps include to expect temptation, know where it comes from and where it can lead, resist temptation's deceit by utilizing the truth in scripture, trust in the goodness of God, and walk in the Spirit.
To grow through tough times we need the right perspective, the right wisdom, the right understanding of prosperity, and to stay focused on the the right prize. What have been your greatest hardships in life? How have you been able to handle those? Connect with us if we can help.
Philip delivers part 7 of the Seven Churches series with a story about one of the wealthiest churches in the Bible. Laodicea lived a life of comfort which kept them from pursuing a passionate relationship with Jesus. What things exist in your life that encourages you towards a lukewarm relationship with Christ? What prevents you from living an out loud, driven pursuit, of helping people discover family in Christ?
What do you do when going through extreme difficulties? Do you grow weary? Do you lose strength? Do you think God doesn't love you? In the message on the church of Philadelphia, Philip identifies how to respond to crushingly difficult circumstances. Extreme difficulties can lead to great opportunities.
Jeff West delivers Part 5 of the Seven Churches series with a message on the the church at Sardis. In a situation where you've lost intentional direction, what do you do? What happens when you've lost your motivation? How do you learn from your past, rediscover your purpose, and move intentionally forward? Jeff highlights the actions required to avoid becoming vulnerable to just coasting through life.
With the letter to the church of Thyatira, Jesus begins to deliver some realities of the devastating sins being allowed by the church. While no sin is greater than another, some sins have a much larger impact on our spiritual journey. As you watch the message, consider what you could accomplish by removing some of the mistakes from yourself that the Thyatira church allowed. Whom do you look towards for your example of authority?
When we don't hold to biblical truth, we put ourselves in opposition to Christ. While Pergamum maintains their faith and wholly believe in Jesus, the cultural pressures start to erode the biblical teaching. How do we respond to the pressures of belief? Do you compromise truth to avoid conflict? In the end, do you desire to lead people towards a relationship with Jesus or to focus on being liked?
What does suffering produce in our lives? In those moments of unfair abuse, sickness, and circumstances will our faith grow? In the second message of the Seven Churches series, Philip explains how God never abandons us. Check out the message, let us know if we can help or pray for you.

As individuals, what actions must we take to address our weaknesses?

In this next message of the God's Story series, Aaron uses the story of Abraham to demonstrate how we sometimes turn our gifts into our gods. How do you keep God’s blessings from becoming a god in your life?

We place dividing lines between ourselves based on ideology, nationality, ethnic heritage, and class. The story of the Good Samaritan highlights that when following God, we recognize those dividing lines represent evil. In the third message of the Parables series, Philip explains the story of the talents. The bottom line, a talent speaks towards taking your opportunities, resources, and abilities and investing in something that matters.
The second message in the Parables series, tells about the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. In the message, Philip mentions the problem that Jesus confronts the most is self-righteousness. Following Jesus requires a continual decision to chose humility over pride.
