This is our first Podcast and we have chosen to use our short trip to Myus in the Aydin district of Turkey. Myus was a sea port many years ago but is now situated inland after the silting up of the river Maeander, some 2000 years ago. All that remains are the ruins of a Byzantine fort and a ,earlier, Ionic temple. The city was huge and was known to have had over 200 Greek warships in its harbour. It was from here that the Greek / Persian wars started. The temple dates from around 500 BC. After the harbour was silted upthe occupants moved everything to the nearby city of Miletus, leaving just the white stones of the temple of Dionysus, which many of which were later used to make the lower walls of the fort.
The fort stands on a rock outcrop about 20 metres high, now competly surrounded by fields
