In this week’s podcast Alfonso Greenbrook looks over the game against Liverpool, where Palace suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since March. Dispute a good performance in a feisty first half, Roy Hodgson’s side fell behind after the break, following a Roberto Pereyra curler, as the Hornets were quick out of the traps. This was closely followed up with a Jose Holebas cross-shot, which found the far top corner. Wilfried Zaha became the club’s all-time top Premier League scorer after he netted in the 70th minute, however this wasn’t enough to get the Eagles back into the game. Should it have been a straight red card? Should Joel Ward have done better with his last-minute chance? Where will Max Meyer fit into the Palace system? Should Benteke be dropped? In this week’s podcast Alfonso Greenbrook looks over the game against Liverpool, where Palace, for the first game this season, tasted defeat at home. Despite holding firm for the majority of the first half against the rampant Liverpool strike-force, a controversial and contentious penalty after Mohamed Salah was ‘tripped’ inside the box by Mamadou Sakho. This changed the completion of the game, but still saw Roy Hodgson’s side in the game before Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off for bringing down Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane scored after a swift counter-attack. After months without football, Palace returned to action in the pre-season campaign. They travelled to Scandinavia to play FC Helsingør and Halmstads. On return to England Palace travelled around the country playing Oxford United and Reading, whilst finishing up at Selhurst Park against Toulouse. In this week’s podcast Alfonso Greenbrook looks over the game against Leicester City, where Palace thrashed 10-man Leicester City to record their biggest ever Premier League victory. Wilfried Zaha and James McArthur both scored in the first half, before Marc Albrighton has sent off – in the second - for pulling back Zaha when he was clear on goal. Following his dismissal, Palace scored three more, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Patrick van Aanholt and Christian Benteke all scoring late goals, getting on the scoresheet. In this week’s podcast Alfonso Greenbrook looks over the game against arch-rivals Brighton, where Palace moved six points clear of the bottom three, with just four games to play. All the goals were scored in an incredible first 45 minutes. Wilfried Zaha grabbed the early lead for Palace, which was closely followed up by James Tomkins doubling the lead. Glenn Murray pulled one back for the Seagulls, but Zaha once again scored to get Palace back in control. Despite taking the lead through a Luka Milivojevic penalty in the first half, and keeping the Reds at bay for the remainder of that half, Sadio Mane scored just after halftime to bring the scores level; and later should have been sent off. In this week’s podcast Alfonso Greenbrook looks over the game against Manchester United, where Palace surrendered a 2-goal lead. Having fought hard throughout the game, the Eagles deservedly took the lead through Andros Townsend and doubled it, soon after half time, through a quick-thinking goal by Patrick van Aanholt. Following very poor defending from Roy Hodgson’s men, Mohamed Diame scored from a corner for Newcastle to hand them the lead midway through the first half. In this week’s podcast Alfonso Greenbrook looks over the game against West Ham United, where Palace drew 1-1 to share the spoils. The Eagles took the lead on 24 minutes when, after a driving run forward and a turn of pace, Townsend crossed to Benteke, who’s bullet header connected with the pin-point cross. Crystal Palace conceded defeat to an excellent Liverpool side who once again showed their title-chasing intent. In the first half Palace showed Jurgen Klopp's side far too much respect and ended the half 2-3, but in the second Alan Pardew’s men battled through but ultimately their efforts were insufficient as the visitors ran out as 4-2 winners. While the first and last 20 minutes of the encounter saw Palace push for goals (Benteke (2) and Cabaye denied), the Eagles were unlucky with some chances (Benteke's header hit the crossbar) but most chances weren't taken while the League champions were ruthless with theirs.
