Today is the final day of my series of conversations with Jorja Jamison. Jorja's book description summarizes her journey so well, "Imagine landing your dream job as an addiction psychologist at the nation's most famous alcohol and drug treatment facility. You've spent eight grueling years earning your Master's and Doctorate degrees in a program you were never supposed to get into, and you've been identified as a rising star in the field. At every turn, leaders are praising you for your abilities. There's just one catch: you have been doing all this while secretly battling your own addiction. For the next three years, you lead a painful double life, presenting to the world as a competent clinician, but privately, you are spiraling into hell. Then, one day, everything falls apart, and you must learn what it truly means to heal from an addiction."
Let's get back to Jorja.

I am grateful for the time Heather spent with us and for the wisdom and passion she shared.

The losses and fear created by this family disease have not stopped Sheila. She is continuously learning and fighting to break free of the negative impact of this family disease.
It is far too easy to look back with "should haves, would haves"; however, when living in the insanity of active addiction, the Monkey Chatter fuels isolation, shame, and fear.
It is the nature of this cunning, baffling, and powerful disease.

This conversation is by no means a promotion of a person in recovery drinking non-alcoholic beverages or not. That is an individual decision between a recovering alcoholic and their sponsor. Mazz and Dayna are sharing their experience, strength, and hope.

Welcome Back! In 2017, Kelley Kitley courageously published her autobiography 'MY self.' 'MY self' is described as a near-mythical Phoenix rising tale of triumph against easily considered insurmountable odds, such as an eating disorder, sexual assault, and alcohol abuse that plunged her deeper into the abyss. Far from another crash-and-burn autobiography of grief, 'MY self' lays bare the vulnerability and isolation unique to Kitley and women while revealing the transformation of loss into a surplus of riches beyond even the author's wildest imagination.
Kelley's book led to the production of their film 'Gray Area,' where Ryan Kitley played himself in this raw and powerful movie. Kelley and Ryan share how they navigated people's reactions to being public about their journey. We discuss the journey of alcohol abuse and recovery, highlighting the different viewpoints experienced by each person within a couple going through this together.
This episode reminds us of our humanity; we can watch the same movie, feel different feelings, and experience diverse focal points. The truth is that each perspective is accurate.

As I close season three of The Embrace Family Recovery Podcast, I look forward to some fun this summer for us all, and the podcast will return after Labor Day with some fantastic guests and topics.
Language matters so much, how we speak to ourselves and speak with each other. This family disease of addiction is brutal and often gets away with far too much, mainly when we blame ourselves and each other rather than the disease.
I wish you a summer of caring for yourself with the love, kindness, and support you deserve that lets life be gentler and less crisis or survival based.

If you are looking for more support this summer, I am available for coaching sessions and will be holding my EFR Coaching Group two Wednesdays a month; learn more here:

Today Al Richards, the host of The Other Side of Addiction Podcast, concludes his story and shares how impactful surrender has been concerning his and his wife's recovery and improved their marriage.

People who love someone with the disease of addiction struggle to let go, set boundaries, and resist getting off the hamster wheel of "fix, manage, and control." In this episode of the Embrace Family Recovery Podcast, Al and I discuss how incapable we are of driving someone else's recovery.

Today we meet Al Richards, the podcast host of The Other Side of Addiction, and a man who self-described "as a weekend warrior, liar, and manipulator."
Al has been sober since 2009; however, in the past year began to identify as someone with the disease of addiction. Al offers the perspective of not having clarity for himself yet being very aware of his wife's disease.
In today's episode, Al shares what has shifted for him to change his perspective on a decade-old habit and how he has learned to take care of himself while supporting his wife in her recovery. Al's story is not unique; however not commonly shared with such openness.
You can also watch Al's The Other Side of Addiction on You Tube.

I am excited to introduce you to a former colleague, Dustin Brockberg, and his wife, Kerry, who are the authors of a phenomenal book called 'End Your Covert Mission: A Veteran's Guide to Fighting Pain & Addiction.'

On today's episode, Dustin,a veteran, psychologist and, adjunct professor at Hazelden Betty Ford, shares why writing a book that combines the psychology and the veteran perspective was essential. We also hear from his wife, Kerry, a psychologist at Courage Kenny who works with those dealing with chronic pain in rehabilitation.

They both share the need for respect, curiosity, and willingness to go at the speed the veteran needs. While this conversation centers upon military veterans, it is parallel to those families dealing with loved ones who suffer from the disease of addiction, especially when returning home from treatment.

In this final installment of his story, Harry Levant brings us up to date on the current fight for education and reform regarding the gambling industry's rapid ingestion and prolific supply. He uses a well-known understanding of nicotine addiction and the effectiveness of its second-hand smoke campaign to illustrate how pervasive gambling marketing is and how we must address the multiple elephants in the room if we wish, as a society, to support the millions in need of help.

This episode was eye-opening for me, as I hope it is for you, on the outright false advertising prolific in national marketing, sports arenas, and more.
Recently thanks to having these conversations where Harry opened my eyes to gambling advertisements, I saw my first gambling ad on Hulu while watching Alaska Daily.
I offer myself grace, as I do my clients when I meet them, "what we know is what we know, until we learn more."

Join us as we learn more about the damaging state of gambling advertising and how we can support each other in recovery.

Happy 100th Episode of the Embrace Family Recovery Podcast!

Today is a solo episode.

In this episode, I share The Three C's of Recovery for both sides of the disease coin.

The Three C's:

I did not CAUSE.

I can not CONTROL.

I can not CURE.

It is undeniable to observe the parallel process of the disease and recovery for both the person with the disease of addiction and their loved ones.

In recovery, an important message for all of us is to look for similarities versus differences. Differences are the disease and Monkey's way of keeping us isolated and stuck. If you haven't learned about Monkey Chatter, check out Episode #15

Listen and see what resonates with you!

One of the most common questions I have heard through my decades of working with people impacted by the disease of addiction is, "why is my love not enough?" I have heard this from parents, partners, children, and siblings. The person with the disease asks, "Why is my love for ------- not enough to keep me clean?"
Today Madeleine Dean and Harry Cunnane, the authors of 'Under Our Roof,' share more about their story and the importance of giving back, how powerful this disease is, and that there are no lost causes. Hope is vital and sometimes feels evasive.
Another exciting part of this episode is learning about the Children's Book, 'You Are Always Loved' they wrote and how it came to be created! I am a huge advocate for educating our children, and this book offers a fantastic opportunity for adults to have conversations about difficult things and emotions.

Today Congresswoman Madeleine Dean and Harry Cunnane are back! This mother and son duo who wrote 'Under Our Roof' share more about their recovery journey. They answer the questions and offer so much more through their story.

Harry introduced me to a powerful quote I had never heard 'while in addiction, trust is lost in buckets, and in recovery gained in drops!'

It is so helpful to hear how Mad and Harry navigated this truth about a symptom of the disease of addiction. This disease requires dishonesty for a person to survive in active use.

I believe addiction is an equal opportunity disease, and today it is my privilege to share the beginning of my conversation with Randy Grimes, who demonstrates this. As you will hear today, Randy came from a chemical-free background, and though he started late, the disease took over his life and almost destroyed everything and everyone he loved.
You NFL fans will envy me as Randy played center for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for ten years, and I got to interview him!
In Randy Grimes's Book, 'Off Center," Mike Ditka says it so well in his forward, "for too many players, the medication they took to stay in on the field follows them into retirement. In September 2019, I inducted Randy Grimes into the Mike Ditka's Gridiron Greats Hall of Fame for his fight against addiction - a feat requiring as much mental toughness as playing pro ball".

Sullivan masterfully uses her story as a launching point while including the voices of many touched by the disease of addiction to demonstrate how the opioid epidemic challenged longstanding recovery protocols in Minnesota, a state internationally recognized for pioneering addiction treatment.

Amy introduced me to a new term, living in a state of ambiguous loss. Listen to learn more.

As Sarah Gollust described, " the personal narratives and oral histories Sullivan weaves together tell an indelible story of the trauma, stigma, and above all, humanity of the experience of addiction and recovery."

As I have learned from many of my guests, Amy has a personal reason for writing this book.

The laughter strikes me in this episode and series with Jennifer Storm, the author of Blackout Girl!

It is fascinating that though the book's subject and conversation are heavy, serious, and taken very seriously, we can also laugh. I believe the laughter comes from a sense of connectivity and the positive impact of the hard work of recovery and healing. We have to feel pain, accept times of loneliness, and be more tolerant of our vulnerability to feel joy and happiness.

In this episode, Jennifer speaks about relapse, recovery, and healing regarding trauma, the value of being heard, and the importance of validation.

We end with some rapid-fire questions that offer fun answers and more laughter!!

Today is another solo episode!
Spirituality has been a challenging part of my recovery journey. To say I had resistance to God being in the meeting literature and skepticism that I could choose what God meant to me was prevalent.
I created a lecture 'Who's Driving Your Bus,' many years ago because many recovering people struggle with the spirituality part of their journey.
As a person who values visual exercises, the bus analogy has been a helpful one for me.

Zoe and her mom Heather return today and share more about how the Hazelden Betty Ford Children's Program has assisted the whole family in healing from the disease of addiction.
Empowerment means the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one's life. I hope you hear Zoe's confidence in her education and the permission for her to set boundaries and speak her truth. Listening to this 15-year-old is truly inspiring, and it fills me with hope. I believe this episode demonstrates well the need and benefits of keeping communication open with your children as they change and grow.
Children typically observe things and mentally try to figure them out for themselves.
Education is vital to empowerment and teaches children to separate the disease from the person and not take responsibility for their loved one's addiction.

Please share this podcast with anyone with children and grandchildren who could benefit. I know there are fears about sharing, exposing, and teaching our children. I believe hearing from Zoe and Heather can help lessen the concern.

Sponsorship is a tool that is invaluable for any recovery program. Sadly people on the family side of this disease often do not afford themselves this gift.

A person asked on my Facebook Page, Embrace Family Program, how do I get a sponsor?
They inspired the idea for this podcast!

While working at Hazelden Betty Ford with clients seeking recovery from a substance use disorder, many parents and partners struggled to engage in their recovery. They were so focused on their addict's program. I understand this struggle, and I hope this podcast helps you consider how beneficial having a sponsor would be moving forward.

Sandy Swenson says it best:
"The hardest thing I have ever done is to acknowledge that I can't control my son's addiction recovery. But maybe the most important thing I've ever done is to let recovery begin with me".

Let your recovery begin with you!

Today we start a series of conversations with my friend Dianne!

Dianne has been a powerhouse in the field of addiction for decades, a warrior of a woman who knows this family disease intimately from many perspectives. Yet, she always maintains a willing heart of a teacher. I'm sure some of that has to do with receiving the gifts other people in recovery shared with her and knowing the power of continuing to pass them on.

Through these conversations, you will hear from Dianne about her recovery as a double winner, her experience with addiction in her story, her family's story, and her Native American community's story.

In our final conversation with Barb and Tom, parents of a son with the disease of addiction. They share more about how Tom surrendered to this being a no-fault disease rather than an intellectual exercise.

Tom and Barb's recovery journey speaks to how we are exposed to recovery as a family because of the person we love with the disease of addiction.   Yet, the benefits of working the recovery program as a family member trickle into all aspects of one's life.

If you have missed any of the episodes with Barb and Tom, their story starts

Can't believe addiction is not an intellectual exercise?

As a mother, I need to orchestrate all relationships around Eric, right?

Their recovery expands in this episode as they embrace these tools of healing for all life's ups and downs, not just with this family disease.

Tom so respected the psychological learning of family recovery; he took it into his business model and added tools to his extensive business experience.

Do you ever feel like you have racing thoughts?
Are you constantly preoccupied with your loved one who has the disease of addiction?
Is it hard to focus on and care for yourself?

If you can say yes to any of these you have found the right podcast!

This subject is near and dear to my heart, Monkey Chatter is something I created to describe the insanity I experience in my head, I call it the voice of my disease keeping me focused on my drug of no choice which is a walking, talking human being.

I have heard from many that this name describes their experience well.  Having a name for the incessant voice in their head that keeps them focused on fixing, managing, and attempting to control their addict, has helped them be more aware of it.

Don't worry not only do I share an example of Monkey Chatter from my story, I also offer tools that have assisted me in my recovery. Thankfully the monkey  is more tame today however it can start screeching at me anytime I feel fear and then back to recovery basics I must go.

The work of family recovery.

What are the challenges?
What are the payoffs?

In this episode, Sandy Swenson shares how as family members, we deny our addictions and issues because our preoccupation with our addicted loved one is all-consuming unless we develop a community of support and tools to develop self-focus rather than being other-focused 24/7.

What is there to be grateful for when the disease of addiction has infiltrated our family?
Could the answer be 'our recovery'?

As we end this episode Sandy reflects on the power of mamas, which seems fitting on this Mother's Day, May 9, 2021.

For the club of mothers of children with addiction - a club we never wanted to join, we are stronger together, find other mamas.

To all the mothers out there Happy Mothers Day!

Sandy Swenson has coined the term 'Unabling' and she takes the time to share a reading from her meditation book entitled - 'Tending Dandelions. Honest Meditations for Mothers of Addicted Children.

How does helping ourselves help the people we love? It feels so selfish and Sandy will share why it is not at all selfish.

How do we love our person and set boundaries around the disease?
Tune in to hear Sandy's boundary.

How do we learn to stop throwing the tissues at them?

The power struggle with the disease of addiction is so futile for all involved especially the person with the disease of addiction.  The disease loves a target, a person or, situation to blame and justify the next use. What about thinking of it as how do we get ourselves out of the disease's crosshairs so it can not use us against our loved one.

How do we love the person while protecting ourselves from their disease?

How do we do the right thing for us all when it feels so counterintuitive to the love we feel and the 'I shoulds' screaming in our head?

Detaching with Love not only saves the person detaching from living in the disease's control, it affords your addicted love one a chance to feel the consequences of their disease. A painful truth of the disease of addiction for both addicts and their loved ones - none of us surrender to the work of our recovery without feeling the pain of our consequences.

I hope anyone out there listening initially feels less alone with this universal challenge of learning how to detach from the disease and love the person. Secondly, I hope through Sandy's honest, open, vulnerability in sharing her story, you find a safe place and a way to share your story. That is when healing can begin. Connecting with others who have walked the path as a loved one of an addict, is the way we get well, it certainly lessens the isolation.

Today Sandy Swenson reads an excerpt from her book, The Joey Song. You will not want to miss it, and I hope you buy her book if you have never read it!

I need a sponsor?

We need to go to meetings?

Family members not only need their own recovery they deserve it.

Sadly many loved ones don't find their own recovery. They spend all their time and energy trying to fix, manage and control their addicted loved one. Falsely believing if they get their addict into recovery, they will be good again.

Sandy Swenson shares in this episode that she had to learn the power is in her own recovery versus the powerlessness in trying to fix Joey.  Not only is the disease of addiction parallel for the family and their addict the recovery journey is also.

Family recovery is counter intuitive to every ounce of their being...just as getting sober is counterintuitive to every ounce of the addict's being when they are using.

Today will be different...

No conversation with a guest.  Just me, Margaret Swift Thompson sharing about the cunning, baffling, and powerful family disease of addiction.

There are so many parallel experiences that the people who have the addiction share with the family members. Such as denial, isolation, increased tolerance, and the solution.

My observation having served this population for a few decades is that the services for the family side of this disease are seriously lacking.

Thus I have launched my business, Embrace Family Recovery LLC to help fill the void and offer coaching to people who love someone with the disease of addiction.

We will work together to establish boundaries, develop a healthy support network, and role model family recovery out loud believing that doing this is a much more effective strategy than ever telling an addict what to do.

Today we have the final episode with Kirkland Hamill. The author of the book Filthy Beasts.

In this episode, like the others with Kirkland, and as he courageously did in his book Kirkland shares vulnerably, openly, with humor and great storytelling about the residual effects of the family disease of addiction and more importantly the gifts of his recovery through Al-Anon.

Kirkland shares the common experience in recovery of three steps forward and two back.
How recovery is not a straight line from A to Z.

Spirituality is another of many topics of family recovery that we cover in our conversation.

In this episode, we revisit his quote about his mother's alcoholism, "she taught me how to survive her".

Kirkland shares about his life with addiction in numerous family members, and coming  to internalize addiction as a no fault disease.

The reality of addiction being an equal opportunity disease that has an impact on ever family member in so many different and similar ways.

Kirkland clearly articulates the variety of emotions around his mother and her not having found recovery - from anger to "intense compassion" that have happened due to his commitment to his own recovery and dedication to his well being.

If you have not read the book, I highly encourage you to do so. Filthy Beasts is available on Amazon, and at your local bookstores. In the book Kirkland Hamill offers a perspective as the son of and sibling of people battling the disease of addiction. He uses humor, intelligence, humility, honesty, and great writing.

I am delighted to introduce to you my friend and fellow Bermudian, Kirkland Hamill who has written his memoir 'Filthy Beasts'.

Kirkland shares his story with a real honesty that is refreshing and courageous when it comes to the secrecy surrounding the family disease of addiction.

The New York Times, Jason Sheeler wrote in this review of Filthy Beasts:
“Wake up, you filthy beasts!” Hamill’s mother hollered to her three sons on school mornings. Those were the all-too-brief good years, before divorce and alcoholism took her under; before Hamill and his brothers’ lives took on a feral quality.

Survivor would be a word I would use to describe Kirkland however he is more than that ... entering the rooms of Al-Anon as a 19 year old on the small island of Bermuda, and working diligently on learning healthier ways to cope and thrive in his life.

Shame, and how to stop ‘shoulding’ on herself, mixed with navigating the waves of hope and fear with relapse.

In this episode Glory shares part of journey as a Social Worker working with clients and as a daughter trying to know when and how to help her mother.

Throughout it all Glory's love and respect for her mom is evident, second only to her love and respect for herself and her own journey.
