Politics and policy could very well affect how stocks perform in 2017. But the key word in that sentence is affect, because I don’t think politics and policy will actually determine how stocks perform. Performance, in my view, depends first and foremost on economic fundamentals.

The 2016 Year-in-Review…And Predictions for 2017 By Mitch Zacks
At the beginning of 2016, I optimistically relayed my belief that stocks would perform better in 2016 than they did in 2015. In 2015, the S&P 500 rose a paltry +1.36% on weak earnings growth propelled by the Energy sector drag. Here is a direct quote from an article I wrote in early January of 2016:
“Another big part of looking ahead to 2016 is recognizing the forces that held stocks back in ’15. Earnings growth ex-Energy was healthy, so we think it’s safe to assume in the very least that there’s a ‘lane’ open for stocks to rise through. Aside from Energy, we think some of the other forces restricting stocks in 2015 should fade in coming year.”
2016 was indeed more about the fading of negatives than it was about the emerging of new positives.
Hear more about 2017 and our predictions.
Best,
Craig

U.S. Financials have far outpaced the S&P 500 index in the weeks following the U.S. presidential election. If you take a look at the iShares U.S. Financials ETF versus the S&P 500 from November 8 – December 1, you will see bank and financial services domination with +9.16% for US Financials vs. +2.79% for the S&P 500.

The campaign season brought tough and sometimes harsh rhetoric on trade – from both sides of the aisle. A candidate running for president essentially has no choice. In order to reach Rust Belt voters dealing with the real pain of lost jobs and declining industry (as a result of those jobs moving overseas), a politician is required to address how they can bring those jobs back. Failure to address these job losses – and by extension, failure to propose a plan for reviving the manufacturing industry – is the equivalent of political suicide. When offering up a solution to bring back jobs and the U.S. economy, the favorite political target is trade: Trade is moving jobs overseas. Trade is killing the manufacturing industry. Trade is hurting the economy. Though trade is responsible for reshaping how resources and labor are allocated across an economy, this type of rhetoric fails to provide a comprehensive understanding of how.

If you think about the U.S. economy as having evolved from being an agricultural based economy, to an industrial based economy, to a service based economy, the question becomes where will all of this technological innovation put us next? In the era of self-driving cars, robotic applications, and automation, it's interesting to think about where new jobs will come from in the future. Innovation, on the surface, seems to be a job killer more than it is a job creator. We will examine these questions.

It’s no secret that the retail sector is evolving rapidly. It feels as though with every day that passes there is a day where the economy is drifting away from the “big box store” and towards the online shopping cart. Consumer spending still makes up more than two-thirds of the U.S. economy, but consumers’ spending habits -where and how we shop- are changing quickly. For investors, it makes sense to have retail-consumer discretionary exposure in portfolios. The question is: where to invest?
We will also talk about a strategy designed to limit downside where possible by taking a “market neutral” approach to investing. In this strategy, we have ‘long’ positions to give us equity exposure in rising markets, but we also have short positions designed to do well when the market is in decline. On balance, our hope and expectation is that we can reduce volatility both ways by having this long and short exposure.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the Federal Reserve left the fed funds rate unchanged in their June meeting, almost certainly on the back of a weak May jobs report (+11,000 m/m). It is yet another example of the Fed’s hypersensitivity to single data points or events, much like their choice to delay a hike in the beginning of the year because of global market volatility (which ended up short-lived).
This week the Federal Reserve will meet again to discuss whether the fed fund rate will change or not. Join us and learn what may be happening.
