Then the gods took his intestines and bound Loki with them to the three stones, and they changed the cord into bands of iron. Skadi then took a serpent and suspended it over Loki's head so that the venom drops from it on to his face. Siguna, Loki's wife, stands near him, and holds a dish receiving the venom as it falls, and when the dish is full she goes out and pours its contents away. While she is doing this, however, the venom falls on Loki, and causes him such intense pain that he writhes so that the earth is shaken as if by an earthquake.
There he lies till Ragnarök (the twilight of the gods).

We discuss his technique (e.g. gimmick) of beating something to death in order to a.) make others “get the joke”, b.) create tension with the audience or c.) simply prove that one is an untalented buffoon who likes to throw around the “C” word. (And no, the “C” word isn’t cancer)
- While discussing “discomfort” the 9th Story hosts also talk about those seminal moments in one’s life where a young boy first sees boobs while watching TV with his parents.
- We discuss writing as a metaphor for life. Do you begin with “the end” in mind or, do you just let characters evolve and drive the plot, as though every page was a new day?
- We talk about writing rituals and ponder whether Dan writes in the nude (and we perish the thought about what happens if he does).
- We discuss that moment where Gary Busey’s agent explained to him the script from David Lynch’s “Lost Highway” and how the film may have been funnier if Bill Pullman turned into Bill Paxton; instead of turning into Balthazar Getty.
- We discuss the power of the edit: Brought to our listeners from the groundbreaking concept of having a beginning, a middle and an end to any story. And, short of that, we think it’s best to at least have an outline -Craig does anyway.
- Craig continues his “Crusade” to convince Dan and others that there are some redeeming, storytelling elements hidden in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. (But, in order to find them, you have to be an archaeologist and, you have to "Get out of the library!")
- We discuss “Hypocrisy in Fandom” – Why do fans get pissed when their favorite performers take an unexpected right turn and, why do fans get pissed when they don’t?
- And, we discuss what is or isn't a spoiler? To discuss it much further here would be, well, a spoiler.

Episode 11: Jobs, Authors, and the Magic of Nine
For Episode Eleven, we had some great ideas about incorporating certain music elements to underscore the importance of the work of the great author, Sammy Hagar. Unfortunately, we encountered a few legal set-backs which gave us a moment to recount the work of Billy Shakespeare who, in Henry VI wrote “…kill all the lawyers.”
Discussion Topics:
The legal set-backs notwithstanding, we were still able to focus on the mathematical wizardry kickin’ around in the cranium of the aforementioned Red Rocker: Sammy Hagar.
Aside from Craig and Dan, guess who else loves Sammy Hagar: Emeril Lagasse. BAM!
The hosts at 9th Story love the number “9” as much as Sammy does. Why? Because 4 x 9 = 36. And, 3 + 6= 9. And, 9 x 6 = 54. And, 5 + 4 = 9. Get it? It’s magic! BAM!
The main topic of episode eleven’s second segment is the career choices of noted authors before they became noted authors. We talk about Carroll, Vonnegut, Grisham, Salinger, Tolkien and others.
In this discussion we pose a lot of great questions and make some fascinating and scintillating observations, including:
• Are there some books you would rather eat than read?
• Is Euclidean a dirty word?
• Oxford University has some bright guys amongst its faculty and student body.
• What happened to us as a people?
• Did Lewis Carroll do his best writing after he was dead?
• Was Tolkien the inspiration for Deep Purple’s “Knocking At Your Back Door” because he was,
after all, a common, cunning, linguist and a master of many tongues.
• Why is Tolkien revered as a great author and Lucas is a writer of gibberish?
• Was JD Salinger a pre-cursor to Julie McCoy from “The Love Boat”?
• Was Harper Lee responsible for McCartney’s dreadful flight on BOAC?
In the "Use Your Allusion" segment we dissect Shelley’s “Ozymandias” sonnet from 1818. We focus mostly upon its recent pop culture relevance in Breaking Bad. But, some listeners may also recognize the “Look on my works ye mighty…” from the opening of Chapter XI of “The Watchmen”
By the way, 1818…Really? That’s 1 + 8, which is 9…followed by another 1 + 8, which is also 9. Add the two nines and what do you get? 18. 1 + 8 is 9…It’s magic! Sammy Hagar is right! BAM!

Cupid and Psyche…does anyone remember British pop legends Scritti Politti who had the epic hit “Perfect Way” on their “Cupid and Pysche ‘85” album? Craig is sincerely hoping that at least one person remembers it. Perhaps someone from our global audience can chime in with an enthusiastic “Umm…yeah…I sorta remember that, mate!”
Gods. American Gods. Gods of Thunder. Gods Almighty. All sorts of Gods. Good and Bad. Dr. Jon Towers is a treasure trove of knowledge for all-things-mythology. We even talk about Zuul, the Gatekeeper of Gozer and the appropriate answer to the question “Are you a God?” (Sorry…there is no mention of Vinz Clortho.)
Battlestar Galactica. It had a reference here and there to a God or two (e.g. Apollo, Athena) but, it was an idea way ahead of its time. Or, was it?
TV and media in general. They are killing us, Smalls! And, they are wiping out the human ability to be creative and to “tell stories.” Mythology is story-telling and it is great because it has compelling story arcs. We don’t have that today because everyone has mushy-brain. Probably due to the peyote buttons that are handed out at the Arizona border.
Unconventional choices for movies to watch with your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day. “True Romance”, “Django Unchained”, “The Princess Bride”, etc. Is “The Terminator” a love story or, is it just an allegory for every Friday night in Pittsburgh?
And, no Valentine’s Day episode would be complete without a thorough discussion on Dinosaur Erotica. (Listen for a very special reading from Dan)
There is no “Use Your Allusion” this week. Instead, we have a great quote from the Doctor. “When I was your age I had one thing to play with: Outside!”

However, the most haunting of the demons is the one known as Sammy Hagar who once again reminds us about the Power of Nine: pointing out that 18 is in fact 1 and 8. And, 1 and 8 added together is 9. Get it? It’s 9 all over the place! There’s some other stuff too…
- American Psycho’s iconic Patrick Bateman: Did you ever think you would hear sports reporters make allusions to Bret Easton Ellis’ Bateman character? They did. And, afterward, they had dinner at Dorsia.
- Dan and Craig talk about going “back to basics” in terms of the show’s format and contemplate which theme song would work better: “Just The Two of Us” or “Reunited”…Ultimately, it’s up to you the listener.
- Gutter Alert! Gutter Alert! It takes Dan a mere eleven minutes until he steers the show straight off the rails.
- Listener Mail Bag: Craig reads a not-so-flattering piece of “fan mail” from the worldly jackass, Christian Saint-Jean Smythe. Saint-Jean Smythe, the producer/manager of Ignernt, the Band, is just spoiling to come on the show to lock horns with us!
- All Hail AMC!!! We laud the talking heads at AMC (and NBC) and give them “mad props” for, in a few instances, letting writers do what they do: Tell stories! Specifically, we talk about character and plot development in “Walking Dead”, “Breaking Bad” and “Hannibal”
- Detritus? What is detritus? Look it up. We are not a dictionary. (Unless the dictionary is a dictionary of allusions in which case, we are, sometimes, a dictionary)
- The Brits and story-telling: Why are they so much better at story-telling and why does it permeate every facet of their British-ness? (Even their heavy metal bands – Iron Maiden, for example – have songs based on books!)
- To “Like” or “Not To Like” – Why is it OK to “Like” something that you may not like? A paradox? Not at all. It’s the Theory of the Stern? People who don’t like Stern listen longer than the people who do. You should listen to us – whether you like us or not – and find out why. I dare you!
- “The key to happiness is not giving a fuck what anyone else thinks.” A wonderfully uplifting mantra uttered by Dan during the show. You’ll have to listen to see “why” it isn’t as questionable as it sounds; particularly as it relates to the Writer’s Craft!
- Dan gives a post-mortem on his work “The Ride” and discusses what worked and what didn’t. He also offers a haunting insight into some of the story’s inspiration.
Use Your Allusion: We focus on the family at the 9th Story and give a little more insight into what is meant by the term “Bad Seed” while conducting an ad hoc interview with our own bad seed, Victoria.

The Dope Show – Was President Clinton telling the truth? Did he inhale? If he didn’t, doesn’t that make him a bigger ass-hat? Why? Because he robbed his buddies from enjoying some choice bud. We also ponder how many cartoon characters were either stoned or, created by people who were.

Why all the horror, Sam Jones might ask? For those who didn't know, May is Zombie Awareness Month. So, we wrap up Season One by talking to two of the four members of Orchard Place Productions about their first feature film, The Other Side.
The Other Side was filmed in Pittsburgh and follows the path blazed by other great, local filmmakers like John Russo and George Romero. Along with partners Chris Murphy and Ray Mongelli, The Niespodzianski Brothers step into the zombie film arena with a fresh take on the genre and a movie that's equal parts thriller, horror, and drama.
The filmmakers talk about the challenges and rewards of fulfilling a dream, and how important it was to them to make sure they featured local crew, artists, actors and musicians, and other talent.
Sit back and listen to why a great story is the centerpiece to any successful film, and how many important elements have to come together in before the final cut.
