We've had a few weeks' rest and recuperation but we're now back with a rare pleasure: former Doctor Who producer Philip Hinchcliffe (1974-1977)!
There is a bit of a story behind this one. Back in 2018, Gareth Kavanagh invited James McLean and Christian Cawley to do some live podcasting and panel interviews at the VworpCon event, held at the PrintWorks in Manchester.
Philip Hinchcliffe was supposed to be one of several guests on a panel discussing the TARDIS and its evolution throughout Doctor Who's history, but on the day the dice didn't roll quite as planned.
As a result, James ended up with just Philip Hinchcliffe, along with a few technical challenges. However, thanks to AI audio fixes and judicious editing by Christian, we've ended up with quite an interesting - and rare - chat with Philip, who gives some quite unique answers and stories on a topic that he doesn't usually get drawn on.

Over the past few years, we've had the chance to attend all manner of Doctor Who events. It's fair to say that the whole world of conventions and interactive experiences has evolved considerably.
From Dimensions 2005 to VworpCon in 2018, and The Crash of the Elysium to Escape Hunt: A Dalek Awakens, we've been very fortunate to have attended a whole host of different events. They have covered different sizes of venues, different types of guests, and offered a wealth of differing experiences.
This week, Christian Cawley and James McLean discuss how Doctor Who events have evolved over the decades. We also discuss A Dalek Awakens, an escape room experience in Norwich, which James was fortunate enough to visit recently.

Esteemed British actor William Russell sadly passed away on June 4th, 2024, at the age of 99. An actor with a career spanning 73 years, his final screen appearance was, of course, in a 2022 Doctor Who episode, The Power of the Doctor.
Over the years, Russell (who also acted under the name Russell Enoch) accumulated a remarkable 109 screen and audio credits (based on an IMDb figure which we suspect is incomplete) dating back to 1949.
In this podcast, we take a look at Russell's most famous role before Doctor Who. 30 episodes of The Adventures of Sir Lancelot were recorded, a show that was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Such a hit, in fact, that some episodes were recorded in colour, way back in 1956!
So, join Christian Cawley and James McLean as they watch, and talk over, episode 1 of The Adventures of Sir Lancelot.

Between May and September 2023, the "Hollywood double strike" - joint industrial action by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA - halted production of TV and movies (and some video games).
The reason for this was generative AI - artificial intelligence that has been programmed to produce text, art, video, and audio material from text prompts.
Recorded during the strikes, this week's podcast nevertheless retains relevancy. We don't know the extent of generative AI on creative industries, and technology continues to infect and disrupt parts of our lives that we would perhaps rather it didn't.

Doctor Who's exploits in the video game world have often left fans and gamers cold.
Despite the success of other franchises (think Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and many others) in the video game arena, Doctor Who's main hits have been a pinball machine and an appearance in Lego: Dimensions.
And yet, Doctor Who has spawned an incredible 18 official, dedicated titles. One of these, The Eternity Clock, starred the voices of Matt Smith and Alex Kingston. Released in 2012, the game was developed by Supermassive Games, who were riding high on their success with the LittleBigPlanet series.
It had been intended as part of a series, but as we now know, the game - released on PC, Sony PlayStation 3, and Sony PSP - was left as a standalone title following poor reviews and sales.
Last year, Christian Cawley spoke with the game's writer, David Bailey (working under the name "David Bryher"), to recall his time on the project. This week's podcast features both that chat, and a rerun of our 2012 conversation with BBC Worldwide's Simon Harris during the launch of Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock.

Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee, David Tennant, Matt Smith... hell, any of them could be considered the definitive Doctor Who. In a world where particular actors are inextricably linked to characters by audiences - Sean Connery as Bond, Christopher Lee as Dracula, Christopher Reeve as Superman - we explore why this happens, and how it affects Doctor Who.
Inspired by the return of Hugh Jackman to the role of Wolverine in 2024's Deadpool 3, we also consider how he may cast a shadow over whoever is cast as his eventual replacement. Is something similar happening with David Tennant's return to Doctor Who? Will the short-term revival of his memorable (definitive?) 2005-2010 run cast a shadow over incoming successor Nchuti Gatwa?
We finish by establishing some rules on what makes a particular performance of such characters definitive, and how this might be applied to Doctor Who.

It's the third part of our retrospective of Chris Chibnall's time on Doctor Who, in which we take a look at 2011's Cold Blood. The concept is simple: we watch the episode and talk over it. You're invited to watch along with us, but you can listen without pressing play on your Season 5 DVD or iPlayer.
Christian Cawley and James McLean witter on endlessly with the occasional drink/toilet break in a futile attempt to find some find sort of evolution throughout Chibnall's long-running involvement on Doctor Who. Long before he became showrunner, Chris Chibnall was a standard writer contributing episodes. Did these early episodes shape "his" Doctor Who? Are there any patterns or common story devices that he relies on? That's what we're hoping to establish.

The UK government has announced that the TV licence fee is to be frozen, with the BBC's funding reviewed to establish a new income model.

Doctor Who fandom has been gifted with rare treats over the years, from comics and novels to audiobooks, audio plays, and independent movies. Anyone engaged with Doctor Who is aware of at least one of these alternate spins on the so-called "Whoniverse" but such productions are often limited by licenses.
After all, the BBC owns Doctor Who.
But, the corporation does not own the characters created by non-BBC writers who worked on the classic series. That's where Cutaway Comics comes in.

Following our previous podcast on how the Time War brings a whole new dimension to Rose, we apply the same thinking across the whole of Doctor Who Series 1.
This time, Christian Cawley joins Brian Terranova and James McLean as they consider the impact of the events of the "previous season" (based on an idea that there is a Time War series that concludes with The Day of the Doctor) on the Ninth Doctor and Rose's exploits.
Does the fact that the audience now knows that Gallifrey survived the Time War recontextualise the events of The End of the World or The Unquiet Dead? Is there any impact to Aliens of London, Father's Day, The Empty Child, or Boom Town? How do Dalek and The Long Game change the Doctor's exploits a few episodes earlier?
And does the return of the Daleks in the year 200,100 represent the final end of the Time War?
Doctor Who returned in 2005 with Rose. It was the first episode of the show since 1996... but in the show's continuity, The Day of the Doctor introduces new, unseen continuity to Rose. Indeed, Rose likely happens right as the regenerating War Doctor leaves the National Gallery.
This podcast takes a look at The Day of the Doctor as a finale to Big Finish's Time War stories. How does this redevelop what we knew about the Doctor back in 2005? How does it change the Doctor's character in context to Rose and the subsequent episodes - all the way back to The Day of the Doctor in 2013, eight years later.
Admittedly, it's timey-wimey, but we think you're on board for this.

Christian Cawley and James McLean are back with a new show. This time, we look at the redesign of the Daleks for Revolution of the Daleks, the New Year's Day 2021 episode of Doctor Who.
Comparing the design with earlier Dalek props, it's remote control/unmanned quality, and how the Dalek looks on clips and stills, we then proceed to compare the various models from over the years, all the way back to 1963.

The first Doctor Who episode to air on Christmas Day was back in 1965, smack bang in the middle of The Daleks' Master Plan. A curio that most fans haven't seen, the episode exists only as an audio adventure from off air tapes.
Or does it?
Aside from a Peter Purves/Jean Marsh two-hander, alongside the original novelisation, various fan-made productions have been mounted. From telesnap archives to CGI recreations, fans have a wealth of options that while interesting, never quite capture the magic of a real episode. However, these projects are interesting in their own right.

An incredible new phenomenon within the world of Doctor Who has occurred. Fans around the planet are watching the show online via free streaming service Twitch.tv. Known more widely as a platform for esports streaming, the Amazon-owned service, more colloquially known simply as Twitch, is streaming Doctor Who's first 26 years, from 100,000 BC to episode 4 of Survival. Fans can simply visit the site and start watching!
Better still, this streaming service offers live text chat. What this adds to old episodes of Doctor Who that you've seen again and again is the benefit of new eyes, of youth. Many of the current viewers are millennials, largely fans of the modern show. After literally months of planning and promises, as well as a few hints, we've produced a kommentary (with a k) for the Graham Williams-era classic/rightly maligned nonsense The Horns of Nimon, starring Tom Baker and Lalla Ward as the Doctor and Romana, with Graham Crowden as Soldeed.
James McLean, Brian A Terranova and guest podKaster Gareth Kavanagh gathered on Sunday to produce a fan commentary for the first two parts of the serial (well, all of it, but Audioboom upload restrictions mean we divide the kommentary into two parts) and it really does turn out to be a fascinating discussion.

Following the news that the pilot episode starring Adam Rayner as Simon Templar that gained attention on YouTube in 2013 had been abandoned in favour of a new pilot written by Chris Lunt (who recently penned the superb ITV serials Prey, the first starring John Simm, the second Philip Glenister) Ian – co-producer on the first pilot and the public face of the estate of Leslie Charteris – talked us through the current status of the production, which at the time of our discussion was in the scripting stage.

It all started off so innocently. Christian Cawley and Brian A Terranova settled down to chat about some recent #DoctorWho news when it all got too much for the American. The news that Steven Moffat had declared the Doctor "not a role model" sent the Kasterborous associate editor over the edge, resulting in a foul-mouthed tirade that threatened to take the podKast off the air.

We've brought you a lot of features recently about one-time communist Malcolm Hulke, the classic #DoctorWho scriptwriter whose career was the subject of a pamphlet, 'Doctor Who and the Communist', and an event, "An Afternoon with Terrance Dicks". Well, this is the last portion. While we to and fro, hither and thither throughout this week's podKast, on the whole the subject matter in The Time Warrior, the opening serial to the 1974 run of #DoctorWho, Jon Pertwee's last season and Lis Sladen's first. Oh, and it also makrs the first appearance of the Sontarans and reveals what the original Boba Fett would have looked like without his helmet.
We'll be honest: The Time Warrior is no one's favourite, but neither is it as bad as, say, Time and the Rani or New Earth (or, for that matter, Kill the Moon). Instead, it seems to exist in a sort of middle rank of the show's stories, neither loved nor hated, just sort of ignored, really, as an event episode that is actually a non-event. Is this reputation deserved? Does The Time Warrior have hidden depths? Christian Cawley, James McLean and Brian A Terranova find out...
This week we had planned to discuss another classic #DoctorWho serial that has a mixed reputation. However, as it is just Christian Cawley and James McLean, we decided instead to look at some of the more interesting news items of the past week, such as the nuWho/Big Finish crossover in UNIT: Extinction and the lovely sight of Christopher Eccleston helping out with a Whovian wedding proposal. There was also time to talk about the announceent of the Sixth Dotor's final adventure as well as the odd communications within the pages of Doctor Who Magazine between Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat.

Taking a turn away from the usual podKast format this week, we head back in time, not to 2005, but to 1985, and the much-maligned Colin Baker story Timelash.
Over the past week, the Kasterborous team of Christian Cawley, Brian A Terranova and James McLean has watched Timelash (in varying degrees of completion) and they report back now, dear listener, for your interest and entertainment. Could it be that Glen McCoy’s script is, in fact, unfairly derided by fans, desperate to highlight a weak point of an already mixed run of episodes?
For those of you who don't know, Timelash - this week's only recommendation - stars Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant as the Doctor and Peri, who find themselves on the planet Karfel were the population are terrorised by the sinister Borad. Guest starring Paul Darrow as the villainous Tekker and including a historical figure in the proceedings, the story has long been lambasted by fans.
This week's podKast takes the slow road; without Christian Cawley (no voice), James McLean and Brian A. Terranova choose to talk about props, specifically the sonic screwdriver and police boxes, as well as suggesting some redesign tips for the Daleks and Cybermen.
So kick back and relax with James and Brian in a sort of timey wimey fireside chat. Hot chocolate might be in order, it's nice, comfy and warming, just like your hosts.

It's #Doctor Who podKast time, and this week we have a nice long chat about the various looks that the Doctor has had over the years and ask: what would you wear?
Faced with the prospect of chatting about a heckuva lot of Doctor Who news, Christian Cawley and James McLean cope admirably with the onslaught of interesting talking points with their usual irreverence and insight before getting stuck into the issue of time travelling attire in the classic and modern series.
With no Brian Terranova this time around, you'll probably find that on this occasion his absence is almost unnoticed. After all, it's a topic that he might have ended up dominating, what with his cosplay tendencies...
Listen out for lots of talk about Jon Pertwee's waistcoat, Peter Capaldi's real-life attire and Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch denying interest in each other's shows. Oh and the recommendations are pretty good too!
PodKasting as a duo this week, Brian A Terranova and James McLean give their thoughts on a couple of recent #DoctorWho news items before turning their attention to two Cybermen stories.
Revenge of the Cybermen in 1975 was the cyborg race's first appearance since 1969, while Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel was their introduction to nuWho (a brief cameo in Dalek notwithstanding). Both stories attempted to rewrite the Cyberman legend, with varying levels of success, and also featured a Doctor with two companions.
While it is difficult to establish which story is "best", Brian and James nevertheless have a great discussion about their likes and dislikes about the two stories.
In this week's podKast, we discuss the many redesigned monsters to have appeared in #DoctorWho over the years, from Daleks and Cybermen to Sontarans, Ice Warriors and Silurians. There's also chat about Tom Baker launching a run of classic Doctor Who on the Horror Channel and some missing episodes #omnirumour talk!

Following last week's silly shenanigan with John Guilor, the PodKast with a "K" gets down to business with James McLean and Brian A Terranova discussing some recent news without the formatted interjections of lead host Christian Cawley.

Curious things took place at the K Towers virtual studio this week, resulting in an hour long podKast that somehow went unrecorded! Being the passionate Doctor Who fans that we are, of course, we pushed on, recording an approximation of the original that attempts to be as honest and genuine as possible.
Sadly, one key result of this is the minimal presence of Brian Terranova, who could only hang around as long as the intro. However, we think you'll agree that his intro is perhaps one of our best yet, and is one that sets up the rest of the show perfectly. This week, we cover the San Diego Comic Con, namely the trailers for An Adventure in Space and Time and the Doctor Who 50th anniversary - and the crucial matter of Karen Gillan's newly-shorn locks.

Remember that time Michael Jackson wanted to be Doctor Who? No, it really happened, as we explore in this podcast.
We start off with a chat about the appearance of the replica of the original TARDIS console from Mark Gatiss' An Adventure in Space and Time at the Paris Comic Con (it will later be seen at the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff) before chatting about the frankly insane "news" that Michael Jackson and Bill Cosby were names suggested for a US production of Doctor Who in the 1980s.
But the highlight this week is probably a chat with Richard Kirby, author of the rather wonderful Desperately Seeking Susan Foreman, an account, complete with brief reviews of stories, of one man's quest to find autographs from all of the Doctor' female companions (and not, as we mention before the interview, every single companion). Richard is fascinating to speak to, and it's always great to feature a guest. I wonder WHO we might have next time...?

Thanks to a leaked memo forcing the BBC's hand over the past couple of days, we're putting our scheduled show on hold to discuss the shock news of Matt Smith's departure from Doctor Who.
That's right, the popular Eleventh Doctor is close to the end, even if it may not be at Trenzalore, and this week's hosts James McLean and Christian Cawley have plenty to muse over.
To start off with, there's Matt Smith's recent haircut and the potential continuity issues this might bring. There's the possibility of female Doctors and young Doctors, older actors and even - for the brave among you - the reformatting of the show, 1970-style, into running with an ensemble cast.

Following news that Steven Moffat considers his time on Doctor Who to be closer to the end than the beginning, and that he - like Matt Smith - takes things one year at a time, could it be that we are approaching the end of an era?

The husband-and-wife team had four sets of scripts on Doctor Who in the 1980s: Mark of the Rani, Terror of the Vervoids, The Ultimate Foe part 2 (both from the Trial of a Time Lord season) and Time and the Rani. Some of these adventures are considered okay... others the very nadir of the show's almost-fifty years.
But: were they really to blame? Is their reputation as a pair of clueless hacks deserved? Was it simply a case of two capable and experienced writers left to do too much... has their reputation as professionals been sullied by Time and the Rani?
It's a complex topic, one that we thought we should tackle!

You lucky people! Not content with gushing over Season 7 in last week's podKast, this time around Christian Cawley and James McLean discuss the wonder that is UNIT, that Dad's Army-esque band of brothers operating out of an ever-moving HQ, combating alien attacks with or without the help of the Doctor.

Running from July 1st at the Fab Cafe in Manchester is a stage adaptation of Robots of Death, the classic 1977 Doctor Who serial written by Chris Boucher. Behind the production is Gareth Kavanagh, and he makes a special appearance on this week's podKast (with a K) to discuss that and other shows with a Doctor Who theme that are lined up for the summer.

Chewing the fat on what has been taking place in the Doctor Who world lately are Brian Terranova, James McLean and Christian Cawley, who despite their obvious, unrivalled professionalism on the podKast haven't received a Bafta lately (or, indeed, at all).
Fear not, however, at least one of them has been in the same room as two of the subjects of this week's podKast with a K - Steven "The Grand Moff" Moffat (aka The Moffinator) and Matt Smith.

Well, that's the crux of the conversation, which follows on from James' assertion that as good as Holmes was, a good portion of his serials weren't all that good and his reputation is slightly overstated. There begins a vast chat in which we discuss and compare Holmes, Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat.
The history of Doctor Who videogames is littered with good intentions, but sadly along the way there have been many disappointments.
With the release of Doctor Who: Worlds in Time and Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, BBC Worldwide hope to push the concept beyond the disappointment of Return to Earth or Dalek Attack.

One of the key elements of our Shada month here at Kasterborous is the podKast (with a "K") in which we discuss the release of the new adaptation by Gareth Roberts, the original abandoned production, the attempts to remount with other Doctors, John Nathan-Turner's clever use of Tom Baker to narrate it in the mid 1990s and ultimate the audio version from 2003.
We also try to get to the bottom of this fascinating question: if Shada had been completed, would we be thrilled by it as a classic?
Frankly, for a TV serial that was never completed there is an awful lot to talk about!
The late, great Philip Madoc is the core of our Kasterborous podKast (with a "K") this week, as we discuss his appearances in The Krotons, The War Games, The Brain of Morbius and The Power of Kroll.
Probably best known as the War Lord or Mehendri Solon, Madoc also appeared in the second Dalek movie, Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150 AD in 1966.
Sadly Madoc, born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales passed away at the weekend following a short illness, aged 77. Born in 1934 he had a career stretching over 50 years and was one of the most compelling British character actors of his generation. There is barely a famous TV show from the 1960s and 1970s that he didn't appear in.

Back in 1993, Doctor Who fans were tempted with an early reprieve to the show's cancellation two years earlier when BBC Enterprises entered into an agreement to start production on a straight-to-video 30th anniversary special, The Dark Dimension (aka Lost in the Dark Dimension).
Over the years Doctor Who fans have been lead to believe that the eventually-cancelled project was scuppered by Philip Segal, producer of the 1996 TV Movie.
However recent research published in fanzine (a term that does the publication a disservice) Nothing at the End of the Lane reveals that Segal has at best overstated his role. The real story behind The Dark Dimension is one of bad decision making, poor budgeting and almost no communication with the key people involved, resulting in a production that almost literally crumbled.
It is this research that forms the basis of our discussion this week, along with a few words about the possibility of Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch playing the Master in the upcoming 50th anniversary season.

With the news of a Doctor Who and Star Trek: The Next Generation crossover series from IDW, we decided to have a look in depth at the Cybermen and how we felt they had been handled by various producers over the years.
Referencing everything from Tenth Planet to Earthshock, Rise of the Cybermen to Closing Time, we attempt to establish where the Cybermen have gone wrong - if at all.
After all, the Borg could be described as being "Cybermen done right" - they weren't conceived as basic storm troopers and have a fascinating, developed back story, something latterly ignored in the case of Cybermen.
On the other hand, it could be argued that the Borg degenerated into "insert threat here" antagonists in their later appearances in Star Trek. It could be that the whole Cybermen vs Borg argument is a lot tougher than we first thought...

Last week Brian Terranova and Christian Cawley were both fortunate enough to be able to visit some live Doctor Who-related events, so we're focussing on discussing these topics this week.
Brian was invited onto a Doctor Who panel at the Kotoricon event, so regaled the team with stories of cosplay and topics that were discussed. Meanwhile Christian travelled to Manchester to view the live (Doctor-free) performance of Russell T Davies' "Midnight".
Poor old James did nothing, but that's okay on this occasion as he is able to ask the right questions on your behalf, dear listener.

As a result, this will be the final podKast until the week following The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe, but fear not as this week's podKast features Brian A Terranova and James McLean discussing the sonic screwdriver and its impact and place in Doctor Who lore.
From humble beginnings in 1968's Fury from the Deep to its modern-day place as a Tricorder-like device, James and Brian discuss the way in which the device is used, has been brought in and out of the Doctor's box of tricks over the years and pick favourite sonic screwdriver moments.
A little later than intended, the latest Kasterborous podKast (with a "K") features Brian Terranova, James McLean and editor Christian Cawley discussing the recent events in the Doctor Who universe, notably the Christmas episode title reveal and trailer from the Children in Need event last week.
Of course, we had to have a chat about harry Potter director David Yates' supposed Doctor Who movie project, a topic which we suspect will run and run over the next few months.
Whether The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe is a good title or not doesn't really come into it - we're more interested in the inclusion of heavy Christmas trappings for a second time. While Russell T Davies' Doctor Who tended to place Christmas in a more day-to-day context, Steven Moffat seems to place a greater emphasis on the traditional western view of snow, ice, hot fires, dark, creepy rooms, celebration and feast.

Back in 1996, the Doctor Who TV Movie struck TV screens on both sides of the Atlantic. At home it was a hit; in the USA, it was ignored.
Now, 15 years later, we ask: has the Paul McGann-starring TV Movie dated badly?
This week's podcast features Christian Cawley, James McLean and Brian A Terranova discussing this in depth, while also taking a look at original design for Nephew in Neil Gaiman's The Doctor's Wife, and just what Danny Cohen thought he was playing at with his recent discussion about Doctor Who at the Church and Media conference.
Here are a few quotes. On the matter of the Doctor Who TV Movie:
"It did feel as though there were bits of The X Files in there but that the script and the tone of the show hadn't actually caught up with where The X Files was at that time."
There is plenty to say on this, despite the episode being so old, and the era it represented failing to materialise. Christian and Brian are both massive fans of Paul McGann's performance in the Doctor Who TV Movie, making this a particularly interesting chat for them.
On the original design for Nephew:
"The Nephew design is pretty stunning... they were having their lives augmented by House... it's understandable that the Ood might not have that, and I think that design would have much more suited the story."
The recent statements by BBC One Controller Danny Cohen concerning Doctor Who Series 7:
"I think the whole...caboodle needs to be more responsive to the situation. Knocking it aside and saying "you've got to have faith" doesn't help the issue... I don't think using Twitter helps."

This week's Kasterborous podKast features a fascinating discussion with Gareth Kavanagh about the second Doctor Who Magazine love-in that is Vworp Vworp! #2!
Long-term readers of Kasterborous will recall that the first issue of Vworp Vworp! featured a couple of contributions from this very site, not least in the shape of part 1 of Time Leech, our own Doctor Who comic strip.
But Vworp Vworp! was much more than a fanzine with a comic strip in it - rather it was a thing of beauty, with the professional quality design, printing and writing contributing to a pinnacle of fanzine production. In many ways it was like a copy of DWM that is itself about DWM.
One of the key characters in the early days of Doctor Who Magazine (back in the Weekly/Monthly days) was Abslom Daak, the insane Dalek killer, and his band of Star Tigers. Daak features heavily in the next issue of Vworp Vworp!, and Gareth Kavanagh tells us a little bit about this and some other features coming up in the magazine.
