On July 23, 2010, Shan Fieldman got into a pick-up truck in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Pontiac, Illinois to arrange the murder of his ex-wife, Shelley, and her current boyfriend, Alan. Fieldman left briefly to get $100.00 from his fiancé, Talia Fonce, which was used as a down‑payment on the hit. Fieldman also provided the hitman with descriptions of his ex and her boyfriend, as well as their home and their habit of hanging out in their garage. He gave the hitman their correct address. While he also left an IOU in the amount f $7,400.00 with the hitman, he did ensure himself plausible deniability by signing it “Joe Smith.” Fieldman was arrested later that night with his fiancé’s children in his car. His fiancé was also arrested because she had introduced Fieldman to Trina Bennett, the informant who reported the potential crime to police. On June 26, 1980, a drive-by shooting near the intersection of Sarah Avenue and Olive Street in St. Louis, Missouri, took the life of 19-year old Quinton Moss and wounded Wallace Conner. Moss had been a suspect in the January, 1980 murder of Dennis “Gant” Griffin, but had never been charged. Larry Griffin was linked by a police officer who saw him in the company of two other men getting into a car similar to the one described by witnesses to the shooting and a bystander at the scene who was able to identify Griffin as one of the shooters. Griffin’s 1995 execution was controversial due to his claim of his actual innocence. A 2005 investigation sponsored by the NAACP concluded that there were “doubts” about Griffin’s guilt. A subsequent investigation by the St. Louis City Circuit Attorney’s Office reached a different conclusion. We’ll talk about the evidence against Griffin, the post-execution investigation that raised doubts about his guilt and the investigation conducted by the St. Louis Circuit Attorney. On August 7, 2004, an anonymous call brought Nashville police to 2728 Mossdale Drive, where they found the home’s owner, 43-year old Johnny Michael Allen, dead in his bed. He’d been shot once in the back of the head. A tip led police to Room 302 at the InTown Suites, where they arrested 16-year old Cyntoia Denise Brown. Initially, Brown gave police a fake name and claimed to be 19-years old. Brown was a runaway from Clarksville, Tennesse. While in Nashville, she’d been living with 24-year old Gary McGlothen, who went by the nicknames “Cut” or “Cut Throat.” During questioning, Brown admitted shooting Johnny, but claimed self-defense, which was refuted by the crime scene and the evidence that Brown took guns, money, paper work and Johnny’s truck after shooting him in the head. Her initial efforts to blame others were unsuccessful and she was charged with first degree murder, felony murder and aggravated robbery. On October 8, 1983, Bob Tate, Jerry Mack Brown, Ronald Mayes and Philip Good were shot in Tate’s ultralight airplane hangar in Sherman, Texas. Their bodies were discovered by Tate's wife and son after Tate failed to come home that evening. Tate’s ultralight, which had been advertised for sale by Good, was missing from the hangar. Bower was identified in January, 1984 when phone records linked 3 calls to Good to a phone calling card provided to Bower by his employer, a chemical company. In his initial interviews with police and FBI agents, who were asked to assist the investigation by the Grayson County Sheriff, Bower lied about everything, including the extent of his contact with Good and Tate, his presence in Sherman and his interest in the ultralight. When police obtained a search warrant, they found aluminum tubing consistent with tubing used in ultralight aircraft, decals removed from an ultralight, wheels with the name “Tate” on them and Jerry Brown’s fingerprints on some of the tubing. Bower was arrested and, in April, 1984, tried, convicted and sentenced to death. Join Lisa O’Brien and Michael Carnahan for Episode 12, State of Texas v. Lester Leroy Bower. On June 2, 1983, Kevin Cooper, who had a long history of escpaes from prison and mental health facilities, walked away from the Chino Institution for Men (CIM) in Chino, California. Cooper had a long history of escape from prison facilities and mental hospitals. During the night of June 4, or early on the morning of June 5, Cooper entered the home of Doug and Peggy Ryen, where he beat, slashed and stabbed Doug, Peggy, and Jessica Ryen and family friend Christopher Hughes to death. The sole survivor was 8-year old Joshua. Cooper was convicted on February 19, 1985 and sentenced to death on May 15, 1985. Jason Anderson was elected as the 36th District Attorney of San Bernardino County on June 5, 2018. He has been a member of the California State Bar since 1997 and served as a deputy district attorney for San Bernardino County from 1998 to 2014. He entered private practice in Rancho Cucamonga in 2014 and has been an adjunct professor teaching Criminal Procedure and Trial Advocacy at the University of LaVerne College of Law. On the afternoon of November 8, 2002, police in Stamford, Connecticut responding to a 911 call, found the body of Anna Lisa Raymundo in the entryway of her condominium. She had been beaten and stabbed by an unknown assailant. Her case would remain unsolved until March 23, 2003, when Sheila Davalloo, was arrested in connection with the attempted murder of her husband, Paul Christos. Davalloo, a research scientist at Purdue Pharma, was a co-worker of Nelson Sessler, Raymundo’s boyfriend at the time she was murdered. Detectives investigating the attack on Christos made the connection between Davalloo’s voice and the still unidentified 911 caller. Davalloo was subsequently linked to Raymundo’s murder based on DNA evidence found in the bathroom of Raymundo’s condo. After Davalloo’s conviction in the attempted murder of her husband in 2004, investigators and prosecutors built a murder case against Davalloo, who was eventually indicated in 2007. In 2012, Davalloo, who represented herself at trial, was convicted Raymundo’s murder. At 2:40 a.m. on December 9, 2001, Michael Peterson, an author and former mayoral candidate, contacted Durham County 9-1-1 services to summon help for his wife, Kathleen. Peterson claimed that Kathleen, who appeared to have fallen on a narrow, back staircase, was still breathing. After disconnecting, he called 9-1-1 back and reported that his wife was no longer breathing. Kathleen’s injuries, the copious amounts of blood on the staircase and the inconsistent statements from Peterson led police to suspect that her death was no accident. Peterson’s 2003 conviction for first degree murder was vacated in 2011 after a prosecution expert was accused of malfeasance in several cases, including Peterson’s. In the early morning hours of October 2, 1999, Steven Beard called 9-1-1 in Austin, Texas to report a medical emergency. First responders initially thought Beard was experiencing sudden complications after a recent surgery. A shotgun shell found on the floor of Beard’s bedroom suggested a more sinister scenario. Beard’s second wife, Celeste, did her best to keep her friend Tracey Tarlton’s name out of the investigation. Celeste also refused to allow investigators to speak to her husband and counseled her children and their friends to refuse to cooperate in any investigation. Tarlton was soon linked to the shooting and initially charged with assault. When Steven Beard died in January of 2000, the charge was upgraded to murder. On November 15, 2004, Tom and Jackie Hawks were tied to an anchor and dragged into the Pacific Ocean from their 55-foot yacht Well Deserved by Skylar Deleon, John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Alonso Machain. Their bodies have never been found. Prior to taking their lives, Deleon forced to couple to sign sale papers transferring the yacht to him and his wife, Jennifer Henderson Deleon and Powers of Attorney, giving the Deleons control over all of Tom and Jackie’s finances and assets. It was that aspect of the scheme that led to Deleon and his accomplices, including Jennifer, being charged with felony murder, making them eligible for a death sentence. On February 20, 2009, Chiquita Tate, a Baton Rouge attorney was found murdered in her downtown office, which showed signs of a fierce life-and-death struggle between Chiquita and an unknown attacker. Police were summoned to the office by Chiquita’s husband, Greg Harris, who claimed she failed to come home the night before and that he’d been unable to reach her by phone for several hours. The only apparent clue seemed to be a clump of hairs found in Chiquita’s open hand and the fact that Chiquita’s wallet was found in a shady part of town the night before. On April 23, 1996, Stacey Stites was raped and murdered in Bastrop, Texas. For a year, Stacey’s case remained unsolved, with no viable suspects until April 4, 1997, when DNA linked Rodney Reed to the crime. Initially, Reed denied knowing Stacey, but at trial, he claimed that he and Stacey were involved in a secret interracial relationship. While this defense was successful once before, the jury at his 1998 trial rejected the claim and convicted him of capital murder. After multiple prior rape victims testified during the punishment phase, Reed was sentenced to death. On January 9, 1993, 22-year old Gina Marie Neulsein failed to show up for her shift at a Royal Farms convenience store in Baltimore, Maryland. At 19, Gina had a brief affair with married Baltimore City police officer James Allen Kulbicki, which resulted in a pregnancy that Kulbick wanted Gina to terminate. Gina resisted and in September, 1991, gave birth to the couple’s son, Michael. In 1992, Gina filed a petition in Baltimore County court seeking support from for their child from Kulbicki, who demanded two paternity tests. A hearing in the case was scheduled for January 13, 1993 and Kulbicki had been ordered to bring a check for approximately $3,000.00 in back child support to that hearing. On December 15, 1994, millionaire entrepreneur Bill McLauglin was shot dead in his Balboa Coves home in Orange County, California. His live-in girlfriend, Nannette Johnston was away from the home, attending a soccer game with her children and her boyfriend, former NFL linebacker Eric Naposki. On April 28, 2004, William McGuire disappeared from the apartment he shared with his wife and two sons in Woodbridge, New Jersey. His wife, Melanie, claimed the couple had a violent argument that ended with 39-year old Bill storming out of the house, vowing never to return. Melanie claimed Bill’s behavior had become erratic in recent weeks and claims to this day that Bill was an alcoholic with gambiling debts owed to shady characters. On May 5, 2004, Kenneth Cole suitcase was picked up by fisherman in Chesapeake Bay near Virginia Beach, Virginia. Inside were a man’s lower legs. On May 11, 2004, a man’s head and upper torso in a matching suitcase were found on a beach by a bird watcher. Finally, on May 16, 2004, a man’s lower torso was found in a third suitcase picked up by a boater in the Chesapeake Bay. Virginia Beach investigators enlisted the media in their effort to identify the victim and a composite sketch led to the body being identified as Bill McGuire, which was confirmed by fingerprint examination. On June 27 1987, Charisse Christopher and her 2-year old daughter, Lacie Jo, were stabbed to death in the kitchen of their apartment in Millington, Tennessee. Charisse’s 3-year old son, Nicholas was attacked and stabbed multiple times in the abdomen. He was rushed from the scene to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, where doctors were able to save his life. An officer responding to a 911 call from the apartment manager encountered Pervis Tyrone Payne at the entrance to the apartment building. The officer had observed Payne on the second floor, in the vicinity of the Christopher apartment. While Payne later claimed to have been just a Good Samaritan, trying to help Charisse and her children, his actions suggested otherwise. On May 5, 1985, Shelly Boggio, her twin sister, Stacy and a friend named Stephanie spent the day together at the beaches in Pinellas County, Florida. The girls were eventually picked up by James Dailey and Jack Pearcy, Kansas natives who’d just relocated to Florida. They visited a couple of bars, then went back to the house Pearcy, Dailey and others shared in Seminole, Florida. Later that evening, Stacy and Stephanie were dropped off at an apartment, leaving Shelly alone with Pearcy and Dailey. The next morning, Shelly’s body was found floating in the Intracoastal Waterway near Indian Rocks Bridge. She’d been strangled, stabbed more than 30 times and ultimately drowned. Before authorities identified Shelly, Dailey and Pearcy left Pinellas County. They traveled to for Miami for a day, then parted ways, with Pearcy heading back to Kansas and Dailey relocating to California. In June, Pearcy was arrested and named Dailey as Shelly’s killer in a statement to police. Dailey was eventually arrested and sent back to Florida in November, 1985. In November, 1999, the body of Paul Vados was found in an alley in Los Angeles. Vados was unidentified until he was reported missing by Olga Rutterschmidt, who claimed to be his cousin. Vados appeared to be the victim of a hit-and-run, but investigation of the case failed to develop evidence that would lead to a suspect and the case went cold. In June, 2005, the body of Kenneth McDavid was found in a Los Angeles alley, again appearing to have been the victim of a hit-and-run. An inquiry with LAPD by an insurance company investigator led to a conversation between two detectives who realized that Helen Golay and Olga Rutterschmidt each had insurance policies on Vados and McDavid. On January 23, 2005, Tammy Gardner called 911 to report that she’d been shot by her husband, John Steven Gardner. Tammy’s condition worsened and she lapsed into a coma prior to arriving at the hospital and died two days later. Gardner was arrested at the beginning of February and eventually charged with capital murder. We’ll talk about the evidence linking Gardner to Tammy’s murder, his trial, direct appeals and post-conviction claims. We’ll also talk about Gardner’s claim that the defense of “abandonment rage” would have resulted in a different sentence if it had been presented to his trial jury in 2006. Finally, we’ll talk about Gardner’s execution on January 15, 2020.
At about 3:15 a.m. on November 13, 1974, Butch Defeo went through the house at 112 Ocean Avenue with a 35-caliber, lever-action Marlin 336C rifle, methodically shooting his parents, brothers and sisters. Ronald, Sr. and Louise were first. They were each shot twice in the back as they slept. His three younger siblings were next. Allison, Matthew and John, whose bedrooms were on the 2nd floor, were murdered next, were each shot one in the back while they slept. Finally, Defeo shot his 18-year old sister, Dawn, who slept on the third floor, in the back. Defeo then threw his rifle in the waterway behind the house, collected evidence into a pillowcase, showered, changed clothing and left the house. On the way to the car dealership where he worked in Brooklyn, Defeo threw his bloody clothing and other evidence into a storm drain. After 6:00 p.m. that evening, Defeo rushed into Harry’s Bar, claiming to have just discovered his parents murdered. He then summoned the bar’s patrons to the house, to discover the gruesome murders. The Dyatlov Pass incident (Russian: Гибель тургруппы Дятлова) was an event in which nine Russian hikers died in the northern Ural Mountains between 1 and 2 February 1959, in uncertain circumstances. The experienced trekking group, who were all from the Ural Polytechnical Institute, had established a camp on the slopes of Kholat Syakhl, in an area now named in honor of the group's leader, Igor Dyatlov. During the night, something caused them to tear their way out of their tents and flee the campsite, all while inadequately dressed for the heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures.
After the group's bodies were discovered, an investigation by Soviet authorities determined that six had died from hypothermia while the other three showed signs of physical trauma. One victim had a fractured skull; two others had major chest fractures and the body of one of the group was missing both its eyes. One of the victims was missing a tongue. The investigation concluded that a "compelling natural force" had caused the deaths. Numerous theories have been put forward to account for the unexplained deaths, including animal attacks, hypothermia, avalanche, katabatic winds, infrasound-induced panic, military involvement, or some combination of these.
Russia opened a new investigation into the incident in 2019, and the conclusions were presented in July 2020: the investigation concluded that the cause of death was hypothermia due to a combination of an avalanche, forcing the group to leave their camp, combined with low visibility. Andrey Kuryakov, deputy head of the regional prosecutor's office, stated: “It was a heroic struggle. There was no panic. But they had no chance to save themselves under the circumstances.”

On August 22, 2005, Castor’s husband, David, died in what was initially believed to be a suicide. Aspects of the scene bothered detectives and they hesitated to close the case. Stacey’s fingerprints were found on a glass of anti-freeze found on the bedside table and a turkey baster with trace amounts of anti-freeze and David’s DNA on the tip was found hidden in a trash can in the kitchen. Surveillance of David’s grave and Stacey’s phone conversations gave police probable cause to exhume the body of Stacey’s first husband, Michael Wallace, who died suddenly on January 11, 2000. Shortly after the exhumation, with rumors of the findings making the rounds, Stacey’s oldest daughter Ashley was found unresponsive in her bedroom, with a conveniently placed “suicide note” in which Ashley exonerated her mother and admitted to killing her father, Michael Wallace and step-father David Castor. We’ll talk about the case against Castor, the evidence proving that she killed two husbands and attempted to kill her daughter, her trial and direct appeal. We’ll also talk about Castor’s post-conviction claim in state court and her sudden death in June of 2016.

On September 25, 2014, Beverly Carter, a Little Rock real estate agent, went to a bank foreclosure property in Scott, Arkansas to show the house to a couple who contacted her online. Beverly was lured to the property by Arron Lewis and his wife, Crystal Lowery, who targeted her because they perceived her to be “a rich broker.” The poorly executed kidnapping plot soon unraveled. Beverly and Carl Carter, her husband, didn’t have ready cash to meet a ransom demand. Lewis left Beverly’s purse locked in her car at the Scott property and brought her back to the home he and Lowery shared in Jacksonville. Lewis murdered Beverly and then, with Lowery’s help, buried Beverly’s body in a shallow grave at a concrete plant in Cabot, Arkansas. On May 5, 1993, Steve Branch, Chris Byers and Michael Moore were reported missing by their parents. They were last seen during the evening of May 5, riding two bicycles around the neighborhood. On the afternoon of May 6, their bodies of were found in a shallow ditch located in a wooded area in their subdivision known as Robin Hood Hills. During the weeks that followed, the West Memphis Police Department received tips about several suspects, including multiple tips implicating Damien Echols, a local teenager who was known to brag about his occult practices, including blood drinking, membership in a cult and graduation to human sacrifice. On June 3, 1993, detectives questioned Jessie Miskelley, a 17-year old associate of Echols. After less than five hours, Miskelley gave a statement that implicated himself, Echols and another teenager, Jason Baldwin. In 2011, four months before a hearing to determine whether the three would be granted new trials based on their exculpatory evidence claims, attorneys for Echols came up with a novel legal maneuver to secure their clients’ release from prison. On August 19, 2011, the three entered Alford pleas, which acknowledged that the state possessed sufficient evidence to convict them if new trials were granted. He is a co‑owner of a health care consulting business and a published author and an elected County Legislator in Orange County, New York since 1998, where he has served on a range of statutory committees including the Legislature’s Off‑Track Betting Committee. The combination of his love for racing, management skills, not‑for‑profit experience and political acumen led to his co‑founding of ThoroFan.
Dr. Bryan Langlois, a board member of Thorofan, is a resident of Pennsylvania and a veterinarian, who became a racing fan for life at the age of 10 when “Brian’s Time” ran in the Triple Crown races of 1988. In 1989, the Triple Crown battles of Easy Goer and Sunday Silence cemented him as a lifelong fan of the sport. Witnessing the horrific breakdown of Go For Wand in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Belmont Park ignited his passion to become a veterinarian

During the 1980s and 1990s, Tommy Lynn Sells was a drifter who traveled around the United States, killing men, women and children. After his arrest in Texas, he confessed to murders in New York, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Massachusetts and Texas between 1987 and 1999. On December 31, 1999, Sells entered the Harris home, where he raped and murdered 13-year old Kaylene Jo “Katy” Harris. He also attempted to kill her friend, 10‑year old Krystal Surles. Krystal survived and identified the man who attacked her and killed Katy. Sells was subsequently convicted and sentenced to death. For 22 years, people who barely knew Stacey have been talking about her in the media and on social media. In October, 1977, Buono and Bianchi assaulted and strangled 19-year old Yolanda Washington in the backseat of Bianchi’s 1972 Cadillac and then dumped her body on a hillside near Forest Lawn Cemetary in Los Angeles, California. Their next victim, 15-year old Judy Miller, was taken to Buono’s home, where she was raped and strangled. Her body was dumped on a neighborhood street, in full view of children heading to school on Halloween morning. Between October, 1977 and February, 1978, Buono and Bianchi claimed the lives of 10 women and girls ranging in age from 12 to 28. During the late spring, or early summer of 1978, Bianchi moved from Los Angeles to Bellingham, Washington, where on January 12, 1979, he murdered two women that he lured to a vacant house using his position as a security company supervisor. Join Lisa O’Brien and Michael Carnahan on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. Central for Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Ira Einhorn. On September 10, 1977, after a five year relationship marred by infidelity and emotional and physical abuse, Helen “Holly” Maddux ended the relationship and returned to the apartment she shared with Ira Einhorn to get her belongings after Einhorn threatened to destroy them. The couple attended a showing of “Star Wars” with friends that evening. That was the last time she was seen alive. After Holly failed to return to New York or to contact friends or family for birthdays, Thanksgiving or Christmas, her family hired private detectives, who traveled to Philadelphia and conducted interviews with the owner, superintendent and residents of the Race Street building, as well as friends of Einhorn and Holly. In spite of Einhorn’s refusal to cooperate, in March, 1979, the investigators presented their findings to the Philadelphia Police Department, which gave the department probable cause necessary to obtain a search warrant for the apartment. On March 28, 1979, Holly’s body was found in a locked trunk, in a locked closet in Einhorn’s apartment. The keys to the two locks were subsequently found hanging on a hook in the kitchen. In January, 1981, Einhorn fled the United States to avoid trial on a first degree murder charge. We’ll talk about the case against Einhorn, his flight to avoid prosecution, his 1997 arrest in France, the extradition process and his 2001 return to the U.S. We’ll also discuss Einhorn’s 2002 trial, conviction, sentence and direct appeal. Finally, we’ll talk about his unsuccessful post-conviction efforts and his death on April 3, 2020, in prison in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a vibrant and exceptionally talented performer and fashion designer, whose life was cut short by Saldivar on March 31, 1995. Saldivar was suspected of embezzling money from both Selena’s fan club and Selena’s businesses in Corpus Christi and San Antonio, Texas. At some point, either after she was confronted about missing funds, or as a means of covering her scheme, Saldivar removed business records and resisted returning the records, which were necessary to prepare the business’ tax returns. We’ll pay tribute to Selena’s life and legacy, including dispelling some of the myths about Selena’s career, her family and her marriage. Finally, we’ll talk about the evidence against Saldivar, her trial, direct appeal and unsuccessful state and federal post-conviction claims.

On December 30, 1977, Ted Bundy escaped from custody while awaiting trial for the murder of Caryn Campbell in Colorado. After brief stays in Chicago, Illinois and Ann Arbor, Michigan, he made his way to Tallahassee, Florida. He rented a room near the campus of Florida State University under the name Chris Hagen. During the early morning of January 15, 1978, Bundy broke into the Chi Omega sorority house and attacked four women, killing Margaret Bowman and Lisa Levy and severely injuring Karen Chandler and Kathy Kleiner. Shortly after fleeing the sorority house, he attacked Cheryl Thomas in her apartment eight blocks from the Chi Omega sorority house. Bundy moved on to Lake City, Florida and, on February 9, 1978 his kidnapped and murder 12-year old Kimberly Dianne Leach. On July 16, 1996, Bertha Tardy, Carmen Rigby, Robert Golden and Derrick Stewart were shot during a suspected armed robbery of Tardy Furniture in Winona, Mississippi. Ms. Tardy, Ms. Rigby and Mr. Golden were dead when police arrived. Sixteen year old Derrick Stewart died six days later at a hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. A former employee, Curtis Flowers, became a suspect due to his troubled history at Tardy Furniture and his inconsistent statements regarding his whereabouts on the morning of the murders. Several witnesses placed Flowers near the crime scene that morning and, shortly after the murders were discovered, his uncle reported a gun stolen from his vehicle that morning. The show kicked off with The Golden Ticket Battle Royal and even though a terrific effort by "The Pretty Boy" Matt Odam. "The Big Man" K. Toomer put the WHOLE ASWF on notice by winning his second golden ticket briefcase. Next up we seen the impressive roll of Luke Justice Jr continue as he upset "Insane" Shane in an excellent encounter. Next up it was brother vs brother as Justin Venson took on his returning brother Daniel in an EXTREMELY personal battle. This matchup did not fail to live to its buildup either as both men beat eachother so badly that neither man was able to answer the refs ten count. Next we would see team ASWF take the 2-1 lead after Asa Morta and Ray Ray picked up the victory over Demike and Tyler Knight. In the next contest we seen Kristian Kross finally vanquish Gigglez in the Gigglez Playground matchup. After intermission we seen Tyler and Demike again this time challenging for the ASWF Tag Team Championship. And yet again they were turned away without a W by Team "WTF" as their reign continues Finally it was time for Rickey Rowland to get his hands on Michael Carnahan in the confines of a matchup. Rowland of course dominated the encounter until his own daughter turned her back on him allowin Carnahan to pick up the win. In our next contest we seen Kid Krazzy capture the ASWF Evolution Championship in an AMAZING 5 man encounter. but the celebration was short lived as Krazzy was attacked by his own trainer! And finally came the main event for the ASWF Championship it was Cataclysm vs Josh Cross for all the marbles. It appeared Cataclysm had won after the encounter but Carnahan and his cronies pulled a fast one. And the decision was reveresed but that is not all as after the encounter Cataclysm was the victim of a beatdown in which his mask came off! Visibly upset at the loss of this precious item Cataclysm laid waste to EVERYONE in the ring including Carnahan as we went off the air!
During the early morning hours of April 27, 1913, the body of 13-year old factory worker Mary Phagan was found in the basement of the National Pencil Company on Forsyth Street in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. The factory superintendent, Leo Max Frank, was arrested, indicted and went on trial in late July, 1913. The most damning evidence against Frank were statements made by Jim Conley, a janitor at National Pencil Company alleging Frank’s inappropriate treatment of the girls who worked in the factory and immoral behavior with others while Conley ensured Frank had privacy. The intense media attention in Atlanta market stoked public Anti-Semitism that bled into Frank’s trial and seemingly guaranteed that he would be found guilty and sentenced to death. After unsuccessfully challenging his trial, conviction and sentence, Frank sought clemency which was granted in June of 1915 by outgoing Governor John M. Slaton. In response, a lynch mob formed, calling themselves the Knights of Mary Phagan. On August 16, 1915, Frank was forcibly taken from the prison farm in Milledgeville where he was serving a life sentence and, in the early morning hours of August 17, 1915, he was hanged from a tree near Mary Phagan’s family home in Marietta. We’ll talk about the facts of the murder of Mary Phagan, the allegations against Frank, his controversial trial and efforts to exonerate him. We’re a live show and calls are welcome. On April 9, 2016, two rear-end collisions escalated into a road rage incident and the shooting death of former New Orleans Saints’ defensive end Will Smith. Smith’s wife, Racquel, was also seriously wounded in the incident. Cardell A. Hayes, a tow truck driver and once promising high school athlete was arrested and charged with second degree murder. At his trial in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court in December, 2016, Hayes testified that the shooting was in self-defense, after Smith punched him and fired a gun at him. That testimony was refuted by multiple witnesses, including three independent witnesses near the scene. The jury voted 10-2 to convict Hayes of manslaughter for the death of Smith and attempted manslaughter for the injury to Racquel. We’ll talk about the lives and careers of Will Smith and Cardell Hayes, the events leading up to the shooting, Hayes’ trial, his request for a new trial and the outcome of his direct appeal. Then we’ll talk about Hayes’ pending writ to the Louisiana Supreme Court and Ramos v. Louisiana, a U.S. Supreme Court case that could impact non-unanimous felony convictions in Louisiana. On March 4, 1995, New Orleans Police Officer Ronald A. Williams, II, Ha Vu and her younger brother, Cuong Vu were murdered during a robbery of the Kim Anh Restaurant in New Orleans East. Also at the restaurant that night were Chau, Quoc and Vui Vu, who were able to hide in the restaurant’s walk-in cooler and summon help once the perpetrators left the restaurant. The robbery and murders were an inside job, carried out by a troubled NOPD Officer named Antoinette Frank and her 18-year old boyfriend, Rogers Lacaze. Frank dropped Lacaze off at a nearby apartment, then went to the 7th District station, picked up a patrol car and returned to the scene with the intent to find and eliminate any witnesses. As Frank entered the restaurant, Chau rushed out the front door where additional responding officers were gathered. Frank’s charade as an additional responding officer was quickly exposed and she was arrested. We’ll talk about the evidence against Frank and Lacaze, their trials, appeals and post-conviction claims and the controversy surrounding the suspected murder weapon, a 9 m.m. pistol Frank obtained from the NOPD evidence room.

On August 4, 1992, Andrew Jackson Borden and his wife, Abby Durfee Gray Borden were murdered in their home on a busy street in Fall River, Massachusetts. The murders happened about 90 minutes apart, some time after 9:00 a.m. While the whereabouts and movements of the Borden family maid were corroborated, Andrew’s younger daughter Lizzie offered conflicting accounts and statements to family friends and police. By Saturday, Lizzie became the prime suspect. After giving confused and contradictory testimony at an inquest the following week, Lizzie was arrested and transferred to the jail in Taunton, the seat of Bristol County, to await trial. In December, 1892, Lizzie was indicted on three counts of capital murder. Though she was acquitted after trial, debate over Lizzie’s guilt or innocence persists. On April 6, 2009, Abraham Shakespeare, a 2006 Florida lottery winner, used his phone for the last time and disappeared. Dorice Donegan Moore, his financial adviser, had recently purchased all of Shakespeare’s assets, including his house, and drained the last of his cash lottery winnings, which was just over a million dollars. Dee Dee offered different stories and gave conflicting accounts of Shakespeare’s whereabouts and reasons for leaving to friends and family, who also received suspicious text messages from a man who was functionally illiterate. With the help of an informant who conned the con, investigators were able to build a case against Moore and in January, 2010, they recovered the weapon used to kill Abraham and located his body buried behind a house purchased by Moore and titled in her boyfriend’s name. Rickey Rowland kicked us off appearing to finally have run out of options and was about to name Michael Carnahan the new commisioner of ASWF. But,at the last moment Rowland pulled one over on Carnahan and named "Sensational" Sara commisoner! In our opening contet "The Big Man" K. Toomer continued his winning ways against William Blackwell and Matt Odam. Next up was a non title contest between ASWF Chammpion Josh Cross and "The Suicide King" Ray Ray and Cody Only. After an excellent back and forth bout between the rivals Carnahans' trifecta again attacked Ray. Forcing the referees hand to call off the bout and rule the match a no contest. Dirty Little Dave was out next as he took on both Loose Cannon and Hambone in a triple threat contest that more than delivered on their spectacular resumes. Next up we had Luke justice teaming with the returning Insane Shane against Cataclysm and Asa Morta but the real story came after the matchup as Justice suddenly attacked the returning Shane leaving the fans to wonder what happened. Gigglez waws out next to take on Evolution Champion Steve O, Troy Twain, and Justin Venson. Kristian Kross made his presence known leaving Gigglez out of the contest. Daniel Venson appeared out of nowhere and cost his brother Justin. One has to wonder what is next for these two brothers who once appeared to be so close? Following the matchup Steve O was left laying by Garion Tyr who made his claim to the Evolution Championship known.Tyler Knight and DeMike took on X Kaliber in a handicapped match for the tag team championship. After a valiant effort by X Kaliber it appeared the titles were about to come home with DeMike and Tyler. However, that is when the Maniae struck inciting a FULL RIOT in the Valiant Arena! Things are definitely getting to a boiling point between these 8 individuals. Finally in our main event Tyr lost focus and his matchup against Reggie Montgomery!
On January 26, 2020, shortly after 9:45 a.m., a Sikorsky S-76B helicopter carrying nine people on a flight from Orange County to Thousand Oaks, California crashed into a hillside near Calabasas, California. Basketball legend, Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, teamates Alyssa Altobelli and Payton Chester and Coach Christina Mauser were on their way to Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy, where the girls were scheduled to play in a basketball tournament being held that day. Alyssa’s parents, John and Keri Altobelli and Peyton’s mother Sarah Chester were also on board. The helicopter was flown by pilot, Ara Zobayan. There were no survivors. The owner of the All-Star Wrestling Federation will be represented by Ray Ray, Asa Morta, and Cataclysm The Maniae! In our opening contest the Big Man continued on his roll of wins by taking out the physically imposing Heinzman/Gigglez. Next up we seen X-Ray pull out a huge victory in a triple threat matchup defeating the returning Troy Twain. And Justin Venson who yet again had to deal with issues with his brother costing him another contest. After that the ASWF Champion Josh Cross defeated the ASWF Evolution Champion Steve O in a Champion Vs Champion non title encounter. Next up Luke Justice was without a tag partner last Saturday but he found an adequate replacement. Yet he still came up short against the current ASWF Tag Team Champions Winning The Fight comprised of X Kaliber and Jake Black. Speaking of being without a partner Ray Ray was without a partner before the tag match against Carnahans' cronies. But while Carnahan was gloating in the entry way Ray revealed his plan as he was joined in this match by Cataclysm. However, after some less than ethical tactics DeMike and Tyler Knight picked up a big tag team win, and some much needed momentum. Finally in the Main Event the former tag team champions exploded! As Garion Tyr got the better of former partner Gaston in dramatic fashion. One has to wonder what is next for both of these guys?
On October 20, 2008, Anne Pressly was attacked, beaten and fatally injured during a burglary of her home in Little Rock, Arkansas. Anne’s mother, Patricia Cannady, found her daughter during the early morning hours, after Anne missed her early morning wake-up call. Anne passed away, surrounded by family and friends on October 25, 2008. A month later, DNA from Anne’s rape and murder was linked to an April, 2008 rape of a teacher in Marianna, Arkansas. Curtis Vance was developed as a suspect in both cases and DNA testing confirmed that his profile was consistent with the evidence in both cases. In 2009, Vance was tried and convicted capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Also we seen Demike and his new 'associates" pick up the victory over the "Mistress of Mayhem" albeit through nefarious tactics. Also the echampion Josh Cross teamed with Tyler Knight, who also aligned himself with Carnahan earlier in the night,. To spoil the apology of Pure Xcellence Maverick and X Ray and in usual gang fashion they were able to pick up the victory over Pure Xcellence! The #1 contender for the Evolution Championship was also decided at the last show as we now know Kid Krazzy will challenge Steve O. And we were set in the main event to decide who would be the #1 contender for Cross' ASWF Championship. However, Carnahan and his thugs had other ideas as they interjected themselves in the contest. And forced a no decision and we ended out the show with Carnahan and his trifecta as he calls them in the entry way after they cleared the ringside area. And Cataclysm and the rest of the Maniae were standing tall in the ring finally backing the new force down and back up the entryway!

He is a co-owner of a health care consulting business and a published author and an elected County Legislator in Orange County, New York since 1998, where he's served on a range of statutory committees including the Legislature’s Off-Track Betting Committee. The combination of his love for racing, management skills, not-for-profit experience and political acumen led to his co-founding of ThoroFan.
Dr. Bryan Langlois, a board member of Thorofan, is a resident of Pennsylvania and a veterinarian, who became a racing fan for life at the age of 10 when “Brian’s Time” ran in the Triple Crown races of 1988. In 1989, the Triple Crown battles of Easy Goer and Sunday Silence cemented him as a lifelong fan of the sport. Witnessing the horrific breakdown of Go For Wand in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Belmont Park ignited his passion to become a veterinarian.

When we last left you at the end of Hostile Holidays we had just witnessed Lone Justice pull off the upset over the Maniae and Pure Xcellence. What is next for these two young men as we head into 2020? And even though it may be a new year not everything has changed as we witnessed Josh Cross retain the ASWF Championship. Who will be the next challenge to "The Original Misfit"? Speaking of challenges we witnessed two tag teams go through an AMAZING tournament to crown themselves tag team champions. Jake Black and X Kaliber shocked the wrestling world in winning over Garion and Gaston. But there will be no automatic rematch in this situation as after the contest Garion Tyr shocked EVERYONE by viciously attacking Gaston. After weeks and weeks of shocking attacks finally Steve O and Kid Krazzy stepped in the ring in a ladder match. Steve O was able to secure another accolade to his impressive resume as he won the Evolution Championship. But this issue seems far far from being resolved between not only the combatants but their representation. Speaking of an issue that is FAR from being resolved we decided very little in the contest between Heinzman and Kristian Kross. What has the first event of 2020 have in store for these two individuals.....or whatever you call Heinzman. Justin Venson finally dispatched of this masked assailant that had been torturing him and his brother for months and months.The joy of victory quickly gave way to heartbreak and confusion as Daniel Venson viciously attacked his brother and left him laying! We have a NEW Mr Golden Ticket "The Big Man" K. Toomer won the opening battle royal to claim the prize. No one in the ASWF can feel safe as Toomer may has the entire roster firmly in his sites!

Michael Amo, a founding member of Thorofan, has been a Thoroughbred horseracing enthusiast for over 30 years. In 1978, a friend took him to the Belmont Stakes and he was soon hooked. He is a co-owner of a health care consulting business and a published author and an elected County Legislator in Orange County, New York since 1998, where he has served on a range of statutory committees including the Legislature’s Off-Track Betting Committee. The combination of his love for racing, management skills, not-for-profit experience and political acumen led to his co-founding of ThoroFan.
Dr. Bryan Langlois, a board member of Thorofan, is a resident of Pennsylvania and a veterinarian, who became a racing fan for life at the age of 10 when “Brian’s Time” ran in the Triple Crown races of 1988. In 1989, the Triple Crown battles of Easy Goer and Sunday Silence cemented him as a lifelong fan of the sport. Witnessing the horrific breakdown of Go For Wand in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Belmont Park ignited his passion to become a veterinarian.

Darren Dake is a law enforcement professional with over 30 years’ experience in criminal and medicolegal death investigation. Darren has worked in both the law enforcement realm of investigations as well as in the role of senior investigator with the Coroner’s office for over 20 years. This combined investigative experience has uniquely established Darren as an expert in investigations which allows him to consult and teach internationally on investigation practices and procedures.
Darren holds national certification as a Medicolegal Death Investigator through the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI), as well as being a nationally certified criminal investigator and certified criminal investigations instructor.
Other accomplishments include the founding of the Death Investigation Academy as well as other investigator focused resources such as the Death Investigator Magazine and the Coroner Talk Podcast. Darren has also published several books related to investigations; Investigating Suicide and Self-Harm Deaths, Interviews and Interrogations- getting the information you want, and Autoerotic Fatalities – a guide to investigating and interpreting the scene. Darren also co-authored the book CODE-Living healthy, happy, and whole submerged in tragedy, trauma, and death.
We kicked things off with "The Golden Ticket" Battle Royal which was won by Ray Ray of the Maniae. One has to wonder with the possibilty of capturing the tag belts. What Championsip Ray may have his sights set on! Next the #1 seed in the Tag Team Championship tournament Garion and Gaston taking on Tyler Knight and Justin Venson. When things were seemingly turning in Venson and Knight's corner Daniel Venson suddenly appeared in the entry way.Only to be quickly yanked back! That wasn't the only bad thing that occured to Justin in this match as suddenly Tyler Knight walked away from a tag from Justin. And then brutally attacked him after thier match. Also the "Big Man" K. Toomer came out calling out Josh Cross. But the champ had a different opponent in mind for Toomer. And out came "The Pretty Boy" Matt Odam to face the "Big Man". Despite his best efforts in kicking out of Black Power Odam ulotimately fell victim to Section 8 and it appears NO ONE will escape section 8. Next up was Kristian Kross taking on Jake Black, Heinzman, and X-Kaliber. Black picked up the victory in this highly competitive encounter. But the main story here was the continued decent into madness by Heinzman or Giggles or whatever it or THAT is called. Also we seen the #2 seed in the tag team championship tournament Ray Ray and Asa Morta take on new comers Peyton Mcallister and Luke Justice. And the young guns did NOT disappoint giving the Maniae all they could handle. And almost took over that #2 seed from Asa and Ray but in the end they were able to regin victorious and continue their monumental roll. Next up we seen the ASWF Championship defended as Josh Cross was challenged by Cataclysm. The match was an excellent encounter and unfortunately Cataclysm won the contest, however it was by disqualification and Cross escaped with his title. Proving that these encounters are FAR from over!
On February 27, 1979, Albert Owens was murdered during a robbery at a 7-Eleven store in Whittier, California by Stanley “Tookie” Williams, a co-founder of the Crips street gang. On March 11, 1979, at around 5:30 a.m. Robert Yang heard a loud bang, a woman’s scream and gunshots coming from the offices of his family’s motel on South Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles. Robert’s parents, Yen-I Yang and Tsai-Shai Yang and sister, Ye-Chen Lin were shot during a robbery of the motel. Prior to his arrest, Williams made inculpatory admissions to numerous friends. In one particularly disturbing admission, Williams imitated the noises made by Albert Owens after being shot in the back, then laughed hysterically for several minutes. After his arrest, Williams conspired with a jailhouse snitch to ultimately attempt escape during transport to court. Williams’ plan included killing a witness against him, as well as the guards and other prisoners on the bus. At his trial in 1981, testimony established that a shotgun shell found at the Brookhaven Motel scene had been matched to a shotgun purchased by Williams in 1974. That evidence, along with Williams’ escape plans and admissions to friends resulted in his conviction. Once Williams’ appeals were exhausted, his execution was set for December, 2005. A host of celebrities and anti-death penalty advocates opposed his execution claiming that he had redeemed himself while in prison. Carnahan interrupted the trio but this time did not address Joey Britt, instead he turned his anger on "Rockin" Rickey Rowland". Who looked as if he had heard enough of Carnahan's antics when he took pity on the announcer and allowed him to weasel his way out. Insane Shane succesfully defended the ASWF Evolution Championship after interferacnce from Steve-O. And that was not the only time these two would make their presence known at the same time! Also we continued to see the descent into madness of Heinzman as it appears "Giggles" whatever that is may be taking over! Speaking of taking over this shadowed figure who has been stalking Justin Venson and upped the stakes yet again. This time he abducted the brother of Justin, Daniel, who was standing at ringside supporting his brother! Also in a matchup of the top two seeds of the Tag Team Championship Tournament. We saw Asa Morta and Ray Ray gain a measure of momentum knocking off the former champs Gaston and Garion in their respective singles matches. Speaking of the Maniae Cataclysm took on the man he cost the ASWF Championship "The Big Man" K. Toomer. While both men appeared to have buried the hatchet they absolutely went to war and the match ended in a no contest. Next up we seen Josh Cross take on Steve-O in what was a singles match but turned into a tag team contest. After interference from BOTH Cataclysm AND Insane Shane! Joey Britt took control of the situation and made a Tag Team Match. And finally in the main event we concluded the opening round of the tournament. And X-Kaliber and Will Cage advanced with a win over X-Ray and Maverick and are looking to take the titles home! On April 23, 1996, Stacey Stites was raped and strangled, before her body was dumped on the side of a country road in Bastrop, Texas. Police theorized that Ms. Stites was abducted between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m. while on her way to the H.E.B. store, where she worked an early morning shift in the produce department. The truck she was driving was found abandoned at Bastrop High School, which was 35 miles from the apartment in Giddings that she shared with her future husband, Jimmy Fennell. In March, 1997, DNA results from Ms. Stites’ body linked Rodney Reed to the murder. In spite of his claims of a secret relationship with the victim, Reed was convicted and sentenced to death in May, 1998. Reed’s direct appeal and numerous state and federal writs have been unsuccessful. In Part 1 of State of Texas v. Rodney Reed, we talked about issues raised by Reed’s advocates on social media, in media articles and documentaries to support their claim that he is actually innocent of Ms. Stites’ murder and/or that there is reasonable doubt about his guilt. Dr. Christopher Daniel Duntsch started his neurosurgery practice in Dallas, Texas in 2011 after completing a training program at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. When he relocated to Dallas, Texas, his first job at the Minimally Invasive Spine Center ended when he left a patient unattended after surgery to jet off to Las Vegas. He then moved to Baylor Plano Hospital, where his surgeries were plagued by bad outcomes. After a brief suspension of his privileges, Duntsch was reinstated to perform “simple procedures.” During one such procedure, Kellie Martin died when he severed an artery. After Martin’s death, Duntsch resigned and Baylor Plano closed their investigation. His next surgeries at Dallas Medical Center resulted in bad outcomes for multiple patients. Floella Brown died when Duntsch blocked an artery, triggering a massive stroke. Several patients were totally or partially paralyzed by severed nerves and misplaced hardware. Drs. Randall Kirby and Robert Henderson lobbied the Texas Medical Board to revoke Duntsch’s license. Fear that he would move to another state and harm more patients led them to lobby the Dallas County District Attorney’s office to take action. Then things got a little creepy as after defeating X Kaliber in a tables match a masked man came out and viciously assaulted Justin Venson. And in the rematch 15 years in the making Ray Ray defeated The Enforcer in a death match that did not fail to deliver! Next it was "The Main Event" Curtis Dawn seeking to become the longest reigning champion of the modern era. Putting his title on the line against "The Big Man" K Toomer who was seeking to become the quickest to capture the ASWF title. But neither man was able to acccomplish their goal as "The Original Misfit" Josh Cross cashed in the golden ticket. And in a absolute SHOCKER became the ASWF Champion defeating Curtis Dawn in the contest and ending his reign. And in what has been described as the most violent and bloody Penitentiary of Pain ever. Insane Shane captured the ASWF Evolution Championship dethroning DeMike who held the title since Anniversary XX. But the celebration was short lived as Steve-O made his return and chased Insane Shane out of the arena! On September 25, 2014, Beverly Carter, a Little Rock real estate agent, went to a bank foreclosure property in Scott, Arkansas to show the house to a couple who had contacted her about online. Beverly was lured to the property by Aaron Lewis and his wife, Crystal Lowery, who targeted her because they perceived her to be “a rich broker.” Lewis tazed Beverly, bound her with duct tape and put her in the trunk of his car. The poorly executed kidnapping plot soon unraveled. Beverly and Carl Carter, her husband, didn’t have ready cash to meet a ransom demand and Lewis had left Beverly’s purse locked in her car at the Scott property. Beverly was murdered when Lewis and Lowery realized that Beverly could have gotten Lowery’s name from prescription bottles in the bathroom where they’d held her. Lewis and Lowery then buried Beverly’s body in a shallow grave at a concrete plant in Cabot, Arkansas. On January 6, 1997, Barry Van Treese traveled from his home in Lawton, Oklahoma to the Best Budget Inn in Oklahoma City. His plan was to pay his employees, pick-up receipts from the hotel, travel to Tulsa and do the same and then return to the Oklahoma City property to inspect it and deal with the manager of that property, Richard Glossip. Glossip had been managing the hotel in Oklahoma City for between eight and nine months and, in the last six months of 1996, Mr. Van Treese and his wife calculated that about $6,000 in receipts was not turned over by Glossip. The condition of the property was also deplorable, with only about 24 of the 54 rooms habitable. Glossip was also permitting unregistered guests to occupy rooms, including his brother Bobby, a drug dealer. In the early morning of January 7, 1997, after Van Treese returned from Tulsa, Glossip sent 19-year old Justin Sneed to murder Van Treese, promising him between $7,000.00 and $10,000.00. After the murder, Glossip instructed Sneed to move Van Treese’s vehicle, also telling Sneed to get an envelope with cash from beneath the front seat. When Sneed returned with the money, Glossip took it and split it between them. Over the next 17 hours, Glossip told conflicting stories to hotel employees and police investigating Van Treese’s disappearance. Also we seen "The Storybook Prince" Gaston come out and take on "The Finely Gifted Athlete" Will Cage. Who showed an ample amount of respect for Fred James following his defeat by James just a couple weeks before. At 6:15 a.m. on November 13, 2012, Cari Lea Farver attended a conference call related to a project with her employer. When her new boyfriend, Dave Kroupa, left for work, Cari was working on her computer. Cari never made it to work that morning and didn’t call in, which was out of character. Later that morning, Dave got a text suggesting that the couple move in together. When he declined, he received angry texts ending their brief relationship. From that point forward, the only communication from Cari came in the form of text messages. No one saw Cari or heard her voice after November 13, 2012. Shanna Golyar, a former girlfriend of Dave, soon began receiving threatening and harassing texts and social media messages from “Cari.” When her home and vehicle were vandalized, “Cari” took responsibility shortly afterwards. In August, 2013, Golyar’s house was burned, with “Cari” admitting to setting the house on fire. In 2014, the ruse fell apart when Golyar tried to shift blame for the years of stalking and harassment to Amy Flora, the mother of Dave’s children. In 2016, the digital trail left by Golyar in a bizarre attempt to win Dave back ended with her arrest and prosecution for murder and arson. On April 4, 1991, sisters Julie and Robin Kerry and their cousin, Thomas Cummins, traveled to the Chain of Rocks Bridge, an abandoned bridge that once took travelers across the Mississippi River between Missouri and Illinois. The sisters wanted their cousin, who was visiting with his family from Maryland, to see a poem they had spray painted on the bridge deck. While on the bridge, the trio encountered Marlin Gray, Reginald Clemons, Antonio Richardson and Daniel Winfrey. After chatting briefly, the Kerry sisters and Thomas continued toward the Illinois side of the bridge as Gray and his cohorts headed back to Missouri. Clemons suggested robbing the three and Gray responded with “Yeah, I feel like hurting somebody.” The quartet turned around and, upon encountering Julie, Robin and Thomas returning to the Missouri side set their plan in motion. Gray, Clemons and Richardson raped Julie and Robin. The girls and Thomas were then taken below the bridge deck to a platform under the roadway via a manhole, where Richardson pushed them 50-70 feet down to the water. Given the choice between jumping, being pushed, or shot, Thomas jumped into the river. He survived and several hours later contacted police. This time answered by Troy Twain and the young man didn’t disappoint! As he was able to hold his own picking up the countout victory. Also we began qualifications for the Penitentiary of Pain. The first fatal 4 way qualifier for this match for the Evolution Championship. Was the always dangerous Insane Shane after Suicide provided the distraction. Also we seen FGA call out the current champions Gaston and Garion, but only “The Story book prince” was in attendance on this night. FGA has a solution picking Fred out of the audience to team with Gaston. But their plan backfired as Fred pulled out the victory pinning Will Cage! Of course the celebration was short lived as after the match Gaston Blasted James in the back! In our next contest after looking DOMINANT for a majority of the match the lights went out. And Cataclysm once again lost his focus and the match. As DeMike is now qualified for the matchup at Halloween Resurrection. And the final spot was taken in the Main Event as Josh Cross is now qualified and heading to Halloween Resurrection. But if course thanks to the Suicide King coming out and blasting Suicide. This thing gets more and more violent as these two come in contact with each other. And we now know that at Halloween Resurrection it will be a death match! On August 5, 1981, Lt. Ronald Dean Oliver was shot and killed after an armed robbery at a Wendy’s restaurant in Memphis, Tennessee. Lt. Oliver and Patrolman Aubrey Stoddard tried to apprehend the robbery suspect, Philip Ray Workman, he fought them. During the struggle, Workman shot Officer Stoddard in the arm and Lt. Oliver in the chest. Officer Stoddard recovered and Lt. Oliver died at the hospital. Workman fled and an hour later was apprehended with the assistance of a Memphis Police K-9. Workman admitted that he was high on cocaine and pills at the time of the robbery and claimed his weapon accidentally discharged after he was hit in the head by officers. At trial, Workman admitted to firing his weapon while it was aimed at officers. He was convicted in 1982 and sentenced to death. During post-conviction litigation, Workman and his advocates claimed that a “key witness” lied at the trial and that Lt. Oliver’s death was the result of “friendly fire,” initially from Officer Stoddard, Officer Steven Parker or an unidentified Memphis Police officer at the scene. They further claimed that the alleged false testimony and “scientific evidence” exonerated Workman of felony murder, entitling him to a new trial, or commutation of his death sentence. After several unsuccessful collateral attacks on the verdict and sentence, Workman was executed on May 9, 2007 by the State of Tennessee. On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 men hijacked four commercial planes as part of a coordinated attack on the United States. Two of those planes were flown into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The third plane struck the U.S. Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane failed to reach its intended target and was crashed by the hijackers in a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Louisiana natives Lt. Michael Scott Lamana (USN), Petty Officer Second Class Kevin Wayne Yokum (USN) and Lt. Col. (Ret.) Robert Joseph Hymel (USAF) died in the attack on the Pentagon. Louis Calvin Williams, III and Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Farmer were killed in the attack on the World Trade Center.
Arkansas natives Sara Low, a flight attendant on Flight 11, and Malissa White were killed in the World Trade Center attack and Operations Specialist Second Class Nehamon Lyons (USN), IV died at the Pentagon.

His behavior and statements, as well as his inquiries regarding converting GPS units for aeronautical operation raised suspicions at his flight school, which led to his arrest on immigration violations in August, 2001 and Al Hamza Ahmad Suliman al Bahlul, Osama bin Laden’s personal assistant and al Qaeda’s propaganda minister. Bahlul took loyalty oaths from Mohammad Atta and Ziad al Jarrah and produced their “martyr’s wills,” a propaganda tool.

"The Original Misfit" Josh Cross issue yet another open challenge and again "The Limitbreaker" tried to answer. But this time under a disquise as "Smoke" a jamaican pro wrestler who just wanted an opportunity. However, Cross quickly seen right through this and told him yet again the challenge was open to ANYONE but him. And yet again Demike had another opponent lined up and ready to go against the "Original Misfit. Josh Cross. This time Justin Venson stepped up and had a surprise for the fans with his brother Daniel joining him at ringside. In what was an epic back and forth encounter we seen Cross again take the low road and get himself counted out. Finally we seen the "Big Man" K. This bonus episode of Clear & Convincing features an interview with Trial Bureau Chief Kelly Blackburn of the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office regarding the Larry Swearingen case. Mr. Blackburn assumed responsibility for the case in 2017. Lisa O’Brien discusses the issues related to Swearingen’s multiple requests for DNA testing, including post-conviction counsel’s objection in 2013 to pre-execution testing requested by the State. They’ll also talk about the agreed testing in 2017 and the inconclusive results. Mr. Blackburn grew up in Brownwood, Texas and attended Texas Tech University, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. He graduated from South Texas College of Law in 1999 and began his legal career at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office as a felony trial prosecutor. He also served in the Public Integrity Division handling cases and investigations of public corruption. In 2008, Mr. Blackburn served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Western District of Texas, where he handled narcotics offenses, human smuggling, bulk-cash smuggling, fire arms, organized crime and criminal immigration offenses. In 2010, Mr. Blackburn joined the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office, where he served as a Chief Prosecutor and Chief of the Public Integrity Division. His now serves as Chief of the Trial Bureau and is Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
Obviously notable by their absense was "Suicide" Otis Crowley and "The Suicide King" Ray Ray. Crowley made good use of his suspension as he captured gold in another organization. And from what we are told Ray Ray may have been in the crowd that night stalking his prey and scouting for weaknesses. From looking at the roster we know that "The Suicide King" will make his presence felt this weekend. But there is still a question as to when we will see "Suicide" again in the Valiant Arena but you can bet Ray will be ready. Also we seen the "Evolution Champion" Josh Cross issue an open challenge for "his" Evolution title. When he would not allow DeMike to answer DeMike switched things up on him and brought out his real opponent for the night. "The Big Man" KToomer answered and he gave Cross absolutely all he could handle! So much so that Cross intentionally had to get himself counted out just so he could escape Toomer's wrath! Speaking of people in foul moods, XKaliber came out and took on Justin Venson and when he lost the match via a quick roll up. He snapped and turned his anger on just about everyone in the building. This included "Sensational" Sara Kay and Michael Carnahan. Putting Sara and a ref through a wooden door in the ring. And then turning his fury on Carnahan who was just doing his job. For his actions The Commisioner Joey Britt has terminated X's contract effective immediately! We were treated to the birth of a new tag team in #FGA as Will Cage and Greyson Beckett not only wrestled one tag team! But they also wrestled a second match against a team making their ASWF return! On August 21, 2019, Larry Ray Swearingen was executed for the December 8, 1998 murder of Melissa Aline Trotter. Over the course of 19 years, Swearingen and his advocates filed what one federal judge described as “a convoluted tangle of habeas applications, pro se motions, mandamus actions, and amended pleadings.” In 2006, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals described Swearingen’s pattern of requests filed days before execution as dilatory and warned Swearingen’s counsel that continued delays could subject them to sanctions. In 2009, the Fifth Circuit characterized another late-filed request prior to a pending execution date as “timing gamesmanship.” Agreed DNA testing did not exonerate Swearingen. Althought Swearingen’s counsel cited an intention to raise additional claims during February and March of 2019, they did not seek funding to pursue investigation of those claims until June. In early August, 2019, counsel retained a new expert. The week before the execution, Swearingen’s counsel sought authorization to file successive state and federal writs, demonstrating what the Fifth Circuit described in 2009 as “disrespect for this court and for Swearingen's life.” Swearingen and his advocates have also repeatedly misrepresented the weight of their post-conviction claims and evidence and have ignored the adverse findings of state and federal courts that have reviewed those claims. On March 9, 2009, Edward Wayne Edwards’ daughter, April, watched a television documentary profiling the August 9, 1980 murders of Tim Hack and Kelly Drew in Watertown, Wisconsin. April remembered living in the area briefly around the time of the murders and that her father worked at the reception hall where the victims were last seen. She contacted authorities and reported her tip. Edwards had been questioned as a person of interest in the case prior to fleeing with his family. DNA linked Edwards to the Wisconsin murders and he was arrested in Louisville, Kentucky on July 30, 2009. Edwards went on to confess to a 1977 murder of a couple in Ohio and the 1993 murder of his adoptive son for insurance money. Shortly after Edwards’ case made the news, a retired Montana homicide detective began a quest to link Edward to an unsolved Great Falls double homicide committed in January, 1956. Soon, the detective believed he’d linked Edwards to countless murders, beginning in 1945 and included allegations of wrongful arrest and conviction in numerous cases. In Part 3, we’ll conclude our look at Edwards with a discussion of the murders he allegedly committed between 1990 and his arrest in 2009 and we’ll look at the detective’s allegations of wrongful conviction and that Edwards framed others for the crimes he committed. On November 10, 2012, at approximately 11:10 p.m., an explosion rocked the quiet Richmond Hill neighborhood, a subdivision on the southeast side of Indianapolis, Indiana. A seismic station 26 miles away in Martinsville recorded the blast and personnel at a nearby fire station were jarred by the it. Firefighters from that station were on their way to the scene as the first calls came into 911. The explosion that leveled the house at 8349 Fieldfare Way also destroyed the houses at 8355 and 8343. Jennifer Longworth died instantly from blast injuries. Her husband, John “Dion” Longworth was trapped beneath two stories of rubble in the basement. A fast moving fire, fed by ruptured natural gas lines, prevented his rescue and he died in the fire. Glenn, Gloria Olvey and one of their daughters were rescued from their collapsed home by neighbors. A multi-agency investigation uncovered clues that told them the explosion and fire were no accident. After their arrests in December, 2012, Monseratte Shirley, Mark Leonard and his half-brother, Bob Leonard, faced 51 counts of arson, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and murder charges. Shirley’s plea deal led to two additional arrests. By the time Corporal Collins finished work that day, the base gym was closed. That night, Sedley Alley was drunk and driving around the base. Corporal Collins’ encounter with Alley took a tragic turn when he kidnapped her, drove her off base and murdered her in a nearby state park. Later the following morning, two Marines who had heard Corporal Collins screams identified Alley’s vehicle based on its Kentucky license plates and the sound of the vehicle. Alley was arrested and indicted for capital murder, kidnapping and rape. His attorneys sought mental health evaluations and raised an insanity defense based on multiple personality or dissociative identity disorder. Alley was convicted after his trial in March, 1987 and sentenced to death. On January 12, 2017, failed doctor Leon Jacob and his live-in girlfriend, Meghan Verikas, argued in their Houston apartment. Jacob’s lack of steady employment during their relationship had created friction in the relationship. The argument escalated and Jacob assaulted Meghan, causing her to flee the apartment. Over the next several days, Jacob stalked Meghan, obsessively contacting her via text and email and waiting outside the hotel where Meghan worked. When Jacob found out Meghan was staying with his brother, he caused a scene at his brother’s house. On February 1, 2017, Jacob was arrested for assault on a family member. Released on bail, he violated court protective orders and a no contact order issued as part of his bond. He enlisted several people in his attempts to contact Meghan, either to resurrect their relationship, or to convince her to drop the charges against him. After a stalking arrest in mid-February, Jacob’s plan turned to murder. Jacob’s girlfriend, Dr. Valerie McDaniel, was ensnared in his scheme and her ex-husband, Mack McDaniel, became a target of a murder-for-hire scheme. New attorneys took Coleman’s case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which issued a decision that is still cited as authority today. Unable to prevail in the courts, Coleman’s advocates re-tried his case in the media in an effort to win clemency or reprieve from his sentence. Coleman was executed in May, 1992, still professing his innocence. In January, 2006, posthumous DNA testing ordered by Virginia Governor Mark Warner conclusively proved Coleman’s guilt. On November 4, 1997, Christina Marie Riggs killed her children, Justin and Shelby, then unsuccessfully tried to take her own life. She claimed that she didn’t want the children, who had different fathers, to be split up after her death. Riggs pled not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Her attorneys argued that Riggs’ severe depression led her to view Justin and Shelby’s deaths as an “act of mercy.” On June 30, 1998, Riggs was convicted of capital murder. While some evidence regarding Riggs’ history of depression was brought out during the guilt phase of the trial, she would not allow her attorneys to put on any evidence during the punishment phase and in testimony before the jury, Riggs requested a death sentence. After her direct appeal concluded, Riggs waived her right to post-conviction relief and she was executed on May 2, 2000. We’ll talk about the crime, Riggs’ history and her desire to be executed which was opposed by groups that included Amnesty International and the ACLU. We’ll be joined by New Orleans Police Department Commander Nicholas L. Gernon for a discussion of real world police investigation, including general information about investigation principles, identifying a suspect and types of evidence. Commander Gernon was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He joined the New Orleans Police Department in 2002, working night patrol in the First District before being promoted to Burglary Detective. He has also worked as a Narcotics and Violent Crime Detective and, from 2007 to 2009, as a Homicide Detective. In 2009, Commander Gernon was promoted to Sergeant in the Eighth District and rejoined Homicide as a Sergeant in 2012. In August 2015, he left the Homicide Unit as the Section Commander and was promoted to Lieutenant in the Sixth District. In November 2016, he was again promoted and became the Commander of the Eighth District, overseeing the Central Business District, French Quarter and Marigny Triangle. In the Spring of 2019, Gernon was appointed to Commander of the NOPD Crime Laboratory, which includes Central Evidence and Property as the department prepares to break ground on a state-of-the-art facility. On the morning of June 7, 1998, Jasper County officials responded to a rural road for what they believed was a hit and run fatality. Once at the scene, they realized the death of James Byrd, Jr. was no accident. A trail of evidence led back to a field, where in addition to signs of a struggle, police found a tool with the name “Berry.” A lighter with the nickname “Possum” and “KKK” was also found at the scene. A witness reported seeing Byrd get into a pick-up truck with three men. His description of the truck led deputies to Shawn Allen Berry, who was picked up on a traffic violation later that night. Berry eventually confessed, leading police to his roommates, John William King and Lawrence Russell Brewer, both of whom had recently been released from a Texas prison. On May 6, 1993, the bodies of Michael Moore, Steve Branch and Christopher Byers were found in a ditch located in a wooded area in their subdivision known as Robin Hood Hills. All three boys had been reported missing by their parents on the evening of May 5, 1993. During the weeks that followed, the West Memphis Police Department received tips about several suspects, including multiple tips implicating Damien Echols, a local teenager who was known to brag about his occult practices, including blood drinking and graduation to human sacrifice. At approximately 3:51 a.m. on December 9, 1981, Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner pulled over a light blue Volkswagen for what should have been a routine traffic stop. Within minutes, the stop turned deadly. William Cook, the driver of the Volkswagen, got out of the vehicle and confronted Officer Faulkner. Cook punched Officer Faulkner, leading to a struggle. Cook’s brother, Wesley, a/k/a Mumia Abu-Jamal, was across the street, sitting in his cab. Abu-Jamal ran across the street and shot Officer Faulkner in the back with a .38 pistol. In late August or early September, 1969, Manson and two followers murdered Donald “Shorty” Shea, a ranch hand at Spahn Ranch because Manson believed Shea had reported the Family to police, resulting in a raid at Spahn Ranch on August 16, 1969. Most of the Family members were released due to an error on the warrant. The Family then relocated to Barker Ranch in Death Valley, where they were arrested in October, 1969 after Manson set fire to a county earth mover. Manson is also believed to be behind the murders of Marina Elizabeth Habe and attorney Ronald Hughes. Tonight, in Part 1, we’ll talk about the victims, the Manson Family members involved in the murders and the investigation of the Tate/LaBianca murders, leading up to the jailhouse statement that solved the case. After a short relationship plagued by domestic violence, Dennise Hayslip ended her affair with Charles Victor Thompson. Thompson refused to accept Dennise’s decision and, in the early morning hours of April 30, 1998, Darren Cain went to Dennise’s apartment to help her deal with Thompson, who was still abusing her. Thompson and Cain fought and, when a Houston Police officer arrived at 3:00 a.m., he found Thompson with a black eye. Since no one wanted to press charges, the officer escorted Thompson from the property and warned him not to return. At around 6:00 a.m., Thompson returned with a gun. After the shooting, Thompson fled to a friend’s house, where he admitted to returning to Dennise’s with a gun, kicking in the door and shooting Darren and Denise. After turning himself in, Thompson attempted to get his friend to change her statement, which she refused to do. While being held in the Harris County jail awaiting trial, Thompson attempted to arrange his friend’s murder by former cellmates who were being released. In August of 1998, he was charged with solicitation of capital murder. At trial, Thompson claimed that Dennise’s death was caused my medical malpractice. On Friday, September 22, 2006, Cassie Jo Stoddart was stabbed to death while housesitting for her aunt and uncle in Pocatello, Idaho. Cassie’s boyfriend, Matt Beckham and friends, Torey Adamcik and Brian Draper, spent part of the evening with her. Within 15 minutes of Torey and Brian leaving, the power in the house went out, which spooked both Cassie and Matt. Not allowed to spend the night, Matt was picked up by his mother at around 10:30 p.m. On Sunday, September 24, Cassie’s 13-year old cousin discovered her body in the family room. An autopsy revealed that Cassie had been stabbed more than 30 times, with 12 wounds deemed potentially fatal. Police questioned Matt, Torey and Brian immediately after Cassie’s body was discovered. Investigators believed that Matt was telling them the truth, but did not find Torey and Brian credible. On Wednesday, September 27, 2006, Brian Draper led police to a cache of evidence buried in Black River Canyon. Draper and Adamcik attempted to burn some of the evidence, which included a several knives, a videotape, gloves, masks and clothing. The knives had been purchased by an 18-year old friend at Adamcik’s request on August 30, 2006. On February 4, 1983, Wanda Vargas Lopez was working as a cashier on the 3-10 p.m. shift at the Sigmor Service Station on South Padre Island Drive in Corpus Christi, Texas. A little after 8:00 p.m., a customer entered the store and warned Wanda that there was a man in the parking lot with a knife. Wanda called the emergency line for the Corpus Christi Police Department to summon help and was on the phone with a dispatcher when the suspect came into the store. A second customer saw the struggle going on inside and moved to intervene. He came face-to-face with the suspect, who fled. Within 20-30 minutes, law enforcement officers found Carlos Deluna hiding under a truck in the nearby neighborhood. Deluna claimed that another man, Carlos Hernandez, committed the robbery and murder, but he refused to provide any information to police or his attorneys. Deluna was executed on December 7, 1989. In 2003, Professor James Liebman sent investigators to Corpus Christi to interview various people and gather records, which he shared with the Chicago Tribune in 2006. In 2012, Professor Liebman published “Los Tocayo Carlos” in the Columbia Human Rights Law Review, which concluded that the crime for which Deluna was executed was committed by Carlos Hernandez, a man who was 8 years older than Deluna, with a reputation for carrying a knife and a history of violence against women in his life. On December 23, 1991, a fire broke out in the home shared by Todd and Stacey Willingham with their three daughters, Amber, 2 and twins Karmon and Kameron, 1. Willingham was at home alone with the girls at the time of the fire and he was the only one to escape it. Willingham’s callous behavior and his inconsistent statements to family, friends and investigators caused suspicion. Those suspicions were confirmed when investigators ruled out electrical or gas problems in the house and found no evidence of an accidental cause. Testing of the threshhold of between front door and porch found traces of charcoal lighter fluid, which is an accelerant. Other indicators of arson were observed, including pour patterns in the floor of the twin’s bedroom and in the hallway leading to the front door. Willingham was convicted and sentenced to death in August, 1992. After unsuccessful direct appeal, state post-conviction and federal habeas corpus proceedings, including writs to the U.S. Supreme Court that were declined by the Court, Willingham’s execution date was set for February 17, 2004. Two weeks before the execution date, materials were sent to Dr. Gerald Hurst, a chemist and arson expert. Dr. Hurst issued a report ruling out arson and criticizing the original investigation. This claim, too, was unsuccessful and Willingham’s execution went forward. The "Infamous Choke Out Artist" "Insane" Shane launched a sneak attack on Ray and left him unconcious in the center of the ring. Both gentlemen are scheduled to be in the building this Saturday you have to assume security will be at an all time high! Tyler Knight were able to defeat the "Titans of Violence" Keegan and Heinzman and the Venson Brothers. But of course if you listen to "The Greatest Gem Known To Man" he once again did it all by himself. Of course you have to give the assist to his partner but also the aformentioned "Titans of Violence". Because after they were defeated they returned to the ring and cost the Venson's their best shot at the belts! We now have a NEW ASWF Evolution champion after X-Kaliber was able to defeat "The Mistress of Mayhem" Asa Morta. Morta put a respectable fight but in the end her body just could not take the pain any longer . In the most brutal match of 2018 Cataclysm finally destroyed Deadly Dale in the Barbed Wire Mayhem Match. On November 3, 2005, Teresa Halbach, a 25-year old photographer from Calumet County, Wisconsin was reported missing by her mother. The last time anyone saw or heard from her was on Monday, October 31. Her last appointment on that date was booked by Steven Avery, who used the name “B. Janda” to photograph a van located at Avery Auto Salvage in Manitowoc County. On November 5, Teresa’s Toyota RAV-4 was found hidden on the Avery property by civilians who were searching the salvage yard with permission from Earl Avery. A .22 rifle was seized from Avery’s trailer on November 6 and a burned Motorola cell phone and burned Canon camera were found in a burn barrel near Avery’s trailer on November 7. On November 8, 2005, a Toyota key was found in the bedroom of Avery’s trailer. The license plate for Teresa’s vehicle was found later inside a car on the Avery property. In February, 2006, an Avery cousin reported that 16-year old Brendan Dassey had been acting out, crying a lot and losing weight. During questioning on March 1, 2006, Dassey admitted to his involvement in Teresa’s murder and provided information that led to the discovery of a .22 bullet with Teresa’s DNA in Avery’s garage and Avery’s epithelial DNA on the hood latch of Teresa’s vehicle. On July 29, 1985, P.B. was kidnapped, sexually assaulted, beaten and left for dead in woods on the shoreline of Lake Michigan in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. A local deputy believed that P.B.’s description of her assailant fit Steven Avery and county law enforcement fixated on him as the perpetrator. In spite of an alibi and leads pointing to another suspect, Gregory Allen, Avery was arrested, charged, convicted and sentenced for the attempted sexual assault and attempted murder of P.B. In 2003, after serving 18 years in prison, Avery was exonerated by DNA recovered from a single hair that linked Gregory Allen to P.B.’s 1985 attack. On May 16, 2001, armed and masked men broke into the apartment shared by Raymundo Cabrera, his wife, Joanna Rodriguez, their newborn son, Ray and Raymundo’s cousin, Rigoberto Cardenas. The men demanded drugs and money that wasn’t there. The men bound Raymundo and Rigoberto and covered Raymundo’s eyes with duct tape. When the men left, they took Joanna and Ray with them. While Houston Police investigated the home invasion and kidnapping, a neighbor told officers about a strange conversation she’d had the evening before with Linda Carty, a former resident of the complex. Police contacted Carty, who told an improbable story about lending her vehicles to men she didn’t know. Carty also told police she knew where the cars might be and led them to both vehicles, which were parked on Van Zandt Street in North Houston. Ray was found unharmed in a Chevrolet Cavalier owned by Linda Carty’s daughter and Joanna Rodriguez was found in the trunk of a Pontiac Sunfire that had been rented for Carty by her daughter. In February, 2002, Carty was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. Carty, who briefly served as an informant for the DEA in the 1990s, claims that she was set up by drug dealers seeking revenge. At 2:31 a.m. on June 6, 1996, Darlie Routier placed a call to 911 to summon help for herself and her sons, Devon and Damon. Darlie claimed to have been stabbed, along with her sons, by an intruder or intruders, who fled through the garage of their home in Rowlett, Texas. Police officers and an ambulance arrived within five minutes. Devon died before help could arrive and Damon died on the way to the hospital. Darlie’s injuries were described as superficial. A crime scene analyst who examined the scene the following morning suspected that the crime scene had been staged. No unknown DNA profiles were found in DNA testing conducted prior to trial and Darlie’s defense team received cuttings and samples of evidence, but did not seek funding to perform their own testing. In early 1997, Darlie was convicted of the capital murder of her younger son, Damon, and sentenced to death. In the early morning hours of November 5, 1989, using her daughter’s keys, Betty entered the home shared by her ex-husband, Daniel T. Broderick, III and his wife of 7 months, Linda Kolkena Broderick. From the doorway of the master bedroom, Betty shot and killed Linda, then turned the gun on Dan. Betty then entered the bedroom, yanking the phone from the wall to prevent her mortally wounded ex-husband from summoning help. Law of Parties, also known as "accomplice liability," provides that a person who instigates a crime, or an accomplice to a crime, can be held to be legally culpable for the full extent of the crime, even if the individual did not directly participate in the crime or was not present at the time the crime was committed. The Felony Murder Rule states that a person who commits a felony, such as kidnapping, rape, burglary or armed robbery, can be found to be legally culpable for any death that occurs, even where there is no specific act against the victim, or an intent to cause the victim’s death. Both concepts have been challenged by legal scholars, defense attorneys and advocates for individuals convicted and sentenced to death, or life in prison under either scenario. On August 14, 1996, Kenneth Foster, Mauriceo Brown, DeWayne Dillard, and Julius Steen embarked on a series of armed robberies around San Antonio, Texas. Foster drove, while Julius Steen scouted victims from the front passenger seat. The third armed robbery began when the foursome followed a vehicle driven by Mary Patrick into a residential neighborhood. Mary and Michael LaHood, Jr. were returning to the home, where Michael lived with his parents and brothers, Nicholas and Marc. When Brown exited the vehicle armed with a .44 caliber pistol, he wore a scarf across his face. As Brown approached them, Michael told Mary to get into the house. Mary, who fell as she fled, saw Brown pointing a gun at Michael’s head. She heard Brown demand Michael’s keys, money and wallet, immediately followed by a loud bang. Michael died instantly. On April 2, 1993, the partially nude body of Carol Heath was found on the living room floor of her duplex apartment in DeQueen, Arkansas. Ms. Heath’s young children were in the apartment at the time of the murder, but were not harmed. On April 14, 1993, police in Albequerque, New Mexico arrested Stacey Johnson after he falsely identified himself. Johnson offered the officers $5,000.00 each to let him go. He also told them that he had killed someone in Arkansas. Johnson was returned to Arkansas, where he faced a capital murder charge. On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 men hijacked four commercial planes as part of a coordinated attack on the United States. Two of those planes were flown into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The third plane struck the U.S. Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane failed to reach its intended target and was crashed by the hijackers in a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

On December 1, 1988, Gloria Jean Leathers and her girlfriend, Wanda Jean Allen engaged in a dispute over a check while at a local grocery store. Ms. Leathers decided to move out of the home she shared with Allen and was escorted by police to the residence to retrieve some of her belongings. After another dispute arose over the ownership of property in the house, Ms. Leathers and her mother went to the police station in the Village, Oklahoma, to file a report. Allen followed and, outside the station, begged Ms. Leathers to reconsider her decision to move out. After retrieving a gun from her car, Allen shot Leathers, then fled to Duncan, Oklahoma. On the afternoon of January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee disappeared after leaving Woodlawn High School, where she was a popular athlete and scholar. Police looking for her questioned several people, including her current boyfriend, Don C., and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. Hae’s body was found partially buried in a shallow grave in Leakin Park, in Baltimore City, Maryland. Three days later, on February 12, an anonymous tip led police to put Adnan Syed at the top of their suspect list. On February 27, 1999, Jay Wilds, an acquaintance of Syed, was interviewed by police and, early on the morning of February 28, 1999, led police to Hae’s missing vehicle. Syed was arrested and charged with first degree murder. The case has been the topic of multiple podcasts, including Serial in 2014 and Undisclosed in 2015, which raised questions about the investigation and Syed’s conviction and have alleged that Syed is actually innocent. Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner, disappeared on Christmas Eve, 2002. The community in Modesto, California rallied, organizing search parties and tip lines in hopes of finding Laci and her baby. Her husband Scott’s attempts to avoid the media were unsuccessful and, shortly after Laci’s disappearance, Amber Frey contacted investigators and revealed that she’d been involved in an affair with Scott since November, 2002. Over the next several weeks, Amber secretly recorded her phone calls with Scott, including a call Scott placed while at a vigil held for Laci that was held on New Year’s Eve. In April, 2003, Conner and Laci’s bodies washed up on a beach in Richmond, California, in the same area of the San Francisco Bay where Scott was fishing on December 24, 2002. When Scott was arrested near San Diego, his dark hair was brassy blonde and he’d grown a goatee and mustache. He was carrying $15,000.00 in cash, a knife, three cell phones, pills, camping equipment, clothing, his brother’s driver’s license and directions to Amber Frey’s place of employment. On June 16, 2008, Casey Anthony left her parents’ home in Orlando, Florida with her daughter, Caylee. Caylee’s grandfather, George, was the last person, other than Casey, to see her alive. For 31 days, Casey lied to her mother about where she and Caylee were, who they were with and what they were doing. On July 15, 2008, Cindy Anthony tracked her daughter down and demanded that Casey take her to Caylee. Eventually, Casey told her brother that Caylee had been kidnaped by a fictional “nanny.” In response to Cindy Anthony’s frantic call, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department began their investigation by taking Casey around Orlando to places she claimed the babysitter had lived. The next day, investigators returned, bringing Casey to her office at Universal Studios. After leading investigators on a second wild goose chase, Casey finally admitted that she hadn’t worked there since shortly after Caylee’s birth in 2005. In spite of blunt statements from investigators, Casey continued telling the kidnaping story. She was arrested and jailed, yet continued claiming that her daughter had been kidnaped by a non-existent “nanny.” When Caylee’s body was found in December, 2008 in a wooded area a half mile from the Anthony residence, Casey was charged with first degree murder. On December 31, 1993, Twila Busby and her sons, Elwin Caler and Randy Busby, were murdered in their home in Pampa, Texas. Twila was strangled and then bludgeoned with an axe handle. Elwin and Randy were stabbed to death. Twila’s live-in boyfriend, Hank Skinner, was in the house, but claimed he was passed out on the couch at the time of the murders. At around midnight, Elwin stumbled out of the house and collapsed on a neighbor’s porch. Instead of summoning help, Skinner, wearing blood-stained clothes and socks, left the house and walked 3-1/2 to 4 blocks to the trailer of a former girlfriend and his NA sponsor, Andrea Reed. In spite of pre-trial DNA test results that bolstered the state’s case against him, Skinner has waged a 25 year campaign to obtain additional DNA testing that he claims would exonerate him. On November 21, 2004, Christopher Anthony Young entered the convenience store/dry cleaner of "Hash" Patel. Video and audio surveillance captured Young, armed with a silver pistol, as he attempted to rob Patel, shooting multiple times when Patel didn’t move fast enough. When the store’s alarm was triggered by Patel, Young left the store in a vehicle he’d stolen from a woman he sexually assaulted in front of her three children approximately an hour before Patel’s murder. Young was convicted and sentenced to death. His conviction and sentence were affirmed on direct appeal and his state and federal post-conviction challenges were unsuccessful. Young’s appeal for clemency, although supported by Mitesh Patel, the victim’s son, was denied and he was executed by the State of Texas on July 17, 2018. Young was the eighth person executed in Texas this year. On February 19, 1985, after a trial that lasted five months, Kevin Cooper was convicted of the June 4, 1983 murders of Doug and Peggy Ryen, their daughter Jessica and family friend, Christopher Hughes. Cooper was also convicted of the attempted murder of the Ryen’s 8-year old son, Josh, who was the sole survivor of the brutal attack. On March 1, 1985, the jury recommended that Cooper be sentenced to death and, on May 15, 1985, after denying post-trial motions filed by Cooper, the judge sentenced Cooper to death. Through his direct appeal and numerous post-conviction claims made in state and federal courts, Cooper has alleged that authorities manipulated and tampered with evidence and that exculpatory evidence was withheld or destroyed. In May, 2001, the parties agreed to limited DNA testing of evidence Cooper's expert identified as crucial to the question of guilt, or innocence. When the DNA results did not exonerate him, Cooper and his attorneys claimed that authorities in San Bernardino County planted evidence to frame him. On the eve of his scheduled execution on February 10, 2004, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals stayed Cooper’s execution to permit him to return to federal district court to develop his tampering claims and to perform additional testing. People v. Kevin Cooper (Part 1 - 1983 to 2001)
On June 2, 1983, Kevin Cooper escaped from the Chino Institution for Men (CIM) in Chino, California. Cooper, who had a long history of escape from prison facilities and mental hospitals, was using the alias “David Trautman” and prison officials were unaware of his true identity. While hiding in a vacant house in the Chino Hills area, Cooper tried and failed to get money from two girlfriends so that he could leave the area. During the night of June 4, or early on the morning of June 5, Cooper entered the home of Doug and Peggy Ryen through a sliding door leading into the master bedroom. By the time Cooper left the Ryen house, Doug, Peggy, their daughter Jessica and family friend Christopher Hughes were dead. Josh Ryen, the Ryens’ 8-year old son, was the only survivor. Cooper stole the Ryen family’s station wagon and made his way to Long Beach, California, where he abandoned the car and headed to Tijuana, Mexico. Cooper, using the alias “Angel Jackson,” got a job on a boat and returned to California. On July 30, 1983, while in Santa Barbara, California, Cooper raped a 26-year old woman at knifepoint and attempted yet another escape when authorities tried to arrest him. Authorities in Santa Barbara soon discovered his true identity and he was returned to San Bernardino County, California to face charges related to the Ryen murders and his escape from CIM. In 1999, Alstory Simon pled guilty to a crime he didn’t commit. His plea came about after a private investigator and a Northwestern journalism professor and his students investigating a 1982 double murder case in Chicago decided that Simon was the “real killer” and fabricated evidence that led to Simon’s coerced and false confession. The killer, Anthony Porter, was released from prison as a result of their investigation. Not satisfied with freeing Porter, the investigator, professor and students gave false testimony to two grand juries convened in the case. Simon was indicted by the second grand jury, based on the false testimony offered by Porter’s advocates. Simon spent the next 15 years challenging his plea. He was released in 2014. On July 31, 2009, Mohammed Shihadeh contacted Florida police to report a murder-for-hire plot. During an interview with the Boynton Beach Police Department, Shihadeh advised detectives that a woman he knew only as “Delilah” was trying to find a hitman to kill her husband of six months. On August 1, 2009, Shihadeh, while wearing a wire and with a video camera hidden in his car, met with Dalia Dippolito in the parking lot of a Mobil gas station in Boynton Beach, Florida. After a 6-day investigation, on August 5, 2009, Dalia Dippolito was arrested and charged with solicitation to commit first degree murder. In spite of the audio and video evidence collected during the investigation, Dippolito’s legal team claimed that she was acting and had no intent to murder her husband. On June 9, 2008, friends discovered the body of Travis Alexander in his shower at his home in Mesa, Arizona. They immediately suspected Jodi Arias, an ex-girlfriend. Initially, Arias seemed to have an ironclad alibi based on her trip to Utah from her home in Yreka, California on the day of the murder. Once evidence at the crime scene linked her to the murder, Arias told admitting to being present, but blamed the murder on masked intruders, who mysteriously let her leave unscathed. While in jail awaiting extradition and later while she awaited trial, she scheduled interviews with the media, appearing on Inside Edition and 48 Hours. She was convicted of first-degree, premeditated murder in May, 2013 and eventually sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in April, 2015. On December 8, 1996, Melissa Trotter disappeared from the campus of Montgomery College in Conroe, Texas. Several witnesses saw her Swearingen prior to her disappearance and a professor saw her leaving the campus with a man at 1:30 p.m. Melissa'a car was found in the parking lot early on the morning of December 9, 1998, indicating that she hadn't returned to campus. On January 2, 1999, her body was found in the forest of Sam Houston National Park. After Swearingen was charged with murder, he did little to help himself by having a cellmate copy a letter written in poorly worded Spanish that gave details of the crime. On May 6,1993, the bodies of Michael Moore, Steve Branch, and Christopher Byers were found in a ditch located in a wooded area in their subdivision known as Robin Hood Hills All three boys had been reported missing by their parents on the evening of May 5, 1993. During the weeks that followed, the West Memphis Police Department received tips about several suspects, including multiple tips implicating Damien Echols, a local teenager who was known to brag about hsi occult practices, including blood drinking and graduating to human sacrafice. On June 3, 1993, detectives decided to question Jessie Miskelley, a 17 year old who was associated with Echols. After less than five hours of questioning, Miskelley gave a statement that implicated himself, Echols and another teenager, Jason Baldwin in the murders. Four months before a hearing to determine whether the three would be granted new trials based on claims of exclpatory evidence, attorneys for Echols, came up with a novel legal maneuver to secure their clients' release from prison. On August 19,2011, the three entered Alford pleas, which acknowledged that the state possessed sufficient evidence to convict them if new trials were granted. On February 17, 1970, at around 3:00 a.m., Military Police at Ft. Bragg, NC responded to a call for help from the on-base residence of Captain Jeffrey MacDonald. They found the bodies of Colette MacDonald, who was pregnant with the couple's third child, on the floor of the master bedroom and daughters, Kimberly and Kristen in their beds. The only survivor was MacDonald, who sustained non-life threatning injuries. MacDonald claimed that a group of drug-crazed hippies attacked the family and killed Collette, Kim and Kristy. From the beginning, CID investigators doubted MacDonald's story, due both to the absence of evidence in the room where MacDonald claimed to have engaged in a life-and-death struggle with attackers and the inconsistent evidence found with the bodies of his wife and daughters. Since MacDonald's conviction in 1979, he has filed multiple claims in federal courts, seeking reversal of his conviction, including twice seeking relief at the U.S. Supreme Court. He started his career with the Downey Police Department after graduating from the Los Angeles Police Academy. In 1969, Chief Deputy Englert moved to Portland, Oregon and joined the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. Chief Deputy Englert has a Bachelor’s degree in Police Administration and has done post-graduate work in psychology. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy and served as President of the 159th Session.
Chief Deputy Englert spent the majority of his career working major crimes, narcotics and homicides. His expertise is in the area of crime scene reconstruction and blood spatter interpretation. In addition to his case work, he has served as a consultant in over 500 criminal and civil death cases in the United States and has conducted more than 600 lectures and training seminars in 35 states in the U.S., as well as Canada, Russia, England, France and South America. Chief Deputy Englert also volunteers his time to a team of detectives and forensic examiners examining cold cases in Multanomah County, Oregon. He’s the author of Blood Secrets: Chronicles of a Crime Scene Reconstructionist (Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martins Press, 2010), which chronicles his early years growing up in Wall, Texas, his career in law enforcement and his work as an expert in blood spatter interpretation and crime scene analysis.

On April 23, 1996, Stacey Stites was raped, strangled and her body was dumped on the side of a country road in Bastrop, Texas. Police theorized that Ms. Stites was abducted between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m. while on her way to the H.E.B. store, where she worked an early morning shift in the produce department. The truck she was driving was found abandoned at Bastrop High School, which was 35 miles from the apartment in Giddings that she shared with her future husband, Jimmy Fennell. In March, 1997, DNA results from Ms. Stites’ body linked Rodney Reed to the murder. In spite of his claims of a secret relationship with the victim, Reed was convicted and sentenced to death in May, 1998. Reed’s direct appeal and numerous state and federal writs have been unsuccessful. At 12:10 am June 13, 1994 the bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were found outside of Nicole's Bundy condo in the affluent Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. When the police went to notify Nicole's ex-husband O.J. Simpson of his ex wifes murder. They found a gruesome scene at his Rockingham estate including blood stains all over the back of his white Ford Bronco. From there Det. Mark Fuhrman climbed the external wall and unlocked the gate to allow the other three detectives in. It was at this time that a bloody glove matching one previously found at the Bundy condo was discoverd in Rockingham. And thus began one of the most infamous cases in not only the history of the California judicial system, but that of the country.

On February 9, 1993, Debra Reese was murdered in her home in Jacksonville, Arkansas. Within a few hours of discovering her body, police arrested Ledell Lee. In 1995, Lee was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. Lee, his counsel, family and other advocates made numerous allegations related to flaws in his trial, including ineffective assistance of counsel throughout all stages of the proceedings. State and federal courts denied relief, allowing his conviction and sentence to stand. On April 20, 2017, Lee was executed by the State of Arkansas. Join the American Idiots Show this week as we discuss the trial, conviction, and subsequent execution of Ledell Lee. We will be joined by not only a journalist who covered the case, but also by Lees' own sister to tell us his story. Lee of course was convicted of the 1993 murder of Debra Reese at her home in Jacksonville, Arkansas. Lee after his 1995 conviction was subsequently confined to solitary confinement on Arkansas' Death Row. This was until the night of April 20, 2017 when he was executed at 11:56 P.M. just minutes before his death warrant expired.
