Welcome to Voice Notes to Self! I’m Helen :)
Each episode is like a journal entry in the internet void, meant for my future self to listen back on when I need comfort, motivation, or advice. If that sounds interesting to you, then feel free to stick around and listen!
Healthy breaks are like healthy meals that will provide sustenance and good health in the long run. Unhealthy breaks are like junk food and can drain you even more. Also, how you act and what you do everyday defines who you are. A teacher always said: Everyday is an audition.

Forward Thinking
What is your reaction to the fact that your brain is still wiring up in your twenties? Does that information feel more like an explanation, an excuse, or an opportunity? Is there anything about your life now that you would like not to be doing in five years? If so, why are you doing it now?
Social Experiment
Measure your screen time for a week. On average, how many hours do you spend? What might you do with that time instead? Do you imagine these activities would make you happier or healthier than screen time? How has screen time and social media affected your relationships with family, friends, and lovers? What are the lessons to be learned here?
Calm Yourself
Reflect on a time when life was uncertain for you. What did you expect to happen? What actually ended up happening? What did you do that was helpful or not during that time? Are there lessons there for life in your twenties? How do you calm yourself when you feel anxious or upset? Do you consider your ways of coping healthy or problematic?
Outside In
The author states whether we are talking about love or work, the confidence that overrides insecurity comes from experience. What experiences have you had at work or in love that have built confidence? It takes about ten thousand hours to be truly good at something. What this means is that there is a lot you can still master or make a part of who you are, by thirty and beyond. If you had ten thousand hours to develop a habit, or to gain an area of expertise, what would it be?
Getting along and Getting Ahead
Describe one thing you would like to change about your current self by the age of 30.Say something about how you plan to do it and what might (but won’t) get in the way Social investment theory suggests that growth and maturity come from the experiences we have rather than just through time. What are your thoughts on this and what experiences, if any, are helping grow in your twenties?
Every Body
The author takes a knowledge is power approach to talking to men and women about fertility. What are your thoughts on thinking about and learning about your own fertility in your twenties? Do you think you would like to have children? If so, how many, in what way (e.g. pregnancy, adoption, surrogacy) and at what ages? What might this mean about the relationships you have in your twenties?
Do the Math
Leonard Bernstein said: To achieve great things, two things are needed. A plan, and not quite enough time. In fact, when we plan things out we often realize we have less time than we think. Using whatever format that works for you, make a rough plan for your life over the next ten years. Include what you might like to accomplish in terms of work, love, travel, money, friends, family, health, habits, you name it. Now, reflect on the process. What did you discover by putting your hopes and dreams on a timeline? Was sketching out your plan scary or exciting or organizing or all of the above and more? What does this plan mean for your twenties?

Part 14: Become One with the Universe
Spiritual growth comes from experience, not theorizing or learning philosophies
You’ll have merged into universal consciousness
- By letting negative energy pass, you’ll drift above it
- Like an individual ray becoming one with the light of the sun
- no longer judge, only respect, honor, cherish, and appreciate
- You’ll see beauty in everything
- The world becomes a garden, ea. flower beautiful in its own ways
- The sun doesn’t shine more on one than another
- The fruit gives to anyone willing to accept
- nature gives and gives to anyone willing to receive

Part 13: The Middle Path of Balance
The middle path
balance between opposites
Some call it Dao
It’s not good for a person to starve, nor is it good for a person to binge.
You can’t survive on extremes
In physics, there’s equal and opposite force
When pendulum swings 30 degrees right from center, it swings back 30 degrees left from center
Things are most efficient when centered and maintaining equilibrium; use little energy
Trying to balance extremes would thus require the equal and opposite energy aka more energy which is inefficient & wasteful
Quit smoking must take extreme because pendulum is swung already to outer edge
Events last just as long as they’re taking place when energy isn’t taken out of extreme.
Life will unfold on its own in the balance.
Finding the balance point
Like sailing, there’s a sweet spot with the wind, ropes, sail, water, and all forces in harmony.
Balance point is dynamic and constantly changing. You can’t control it and make it fit your mental model; don't expect to remain stagnant
Take notice like how a blind person using cane to feel for edges to avoid
Examine the extreme to see effects
How to reach balance?
Just let go. Don’t touch it or contribute energy to it. Don’t participate

Part 12: Reflect on Death
Death is the best teacher, embrace it.
It puts things in perspective (big picture)
Why bother with small grudges?
Scarcity makes life precious
A dying person would envy your present. Would envy your normalcy
Death shows that everything can be changed in an instant. It is a promise that all good or bad will come to an end
Death can come at any moment. At any moment, what you’re doing right now is how someone died.
Live life like every moment is the last b/c it very well could be
How are you living right now? Is that how you want to live? What priorities, thoughts, actions would change?
There’s no warning for death. You had all that time. Don’t ask for an extension. Why didn’t you use the time you were already given wisely?
You can’t change life, only how you live your life
The ultimate gift from life is the growth from experiencing it. Willingness to experience life events is what gives life meaning
Don’t be mistaken, doesn’t mean YOLO recklessness. Your desire to get special experiences is just you making up for missing out on life’s regular special moments.

Part 11: Don’t Resist
Resistance creates stress
Life is just an eternal sequence of events happening one after another. That’s the reality of life. It’s a gift of a flow of events that are presented in front of you
Resistance stops you from noticing this sequence; stops you from living life
Will power makes the body move, makes things happen.
You have control, the power to affect things
yet resistance to reality is resisting things that already took place; can't change those
only resists energy from passing through -- simple terms. Hold a grudge
Will power drains when struggling to resist
You waste energy b/c what happened already passed
You are only struggling w/yourself
When you have fear/stress/anxiety over things that haven’t happened yet
you’re throwing energy away b/c the chances of happening are slim
It uses energy that could be used to deal with current awareness events & affects clarity
No reason to stress or burn out when you don’t let willpower resist or build up negative energy
Sometimes these things you resist aren’t even big, just build up big over time bc you didn’t let go soon enough
Let it through you, view with objectivity
Why did you decide to resist this one? Dig deep on preconceived notions & core issues
Being present makes events clearer to see, less likely to get blocked
Relax and release

Part 10: Unconditional Happiness, No Matter What
- It’s all under your control when you are aware
- remain happy no matter what life throws at you
- There'll be things that threaten your commitment to happiness but endure no matter what
Fact: you will die
- so just live a happy life
- There’s no reason not to be happy b/c
- Things are insignificant in comparison to the broader scope of things
- You gain nothing by being bothered
You win the game of life if you continue being unbothered and happy
Open your heart no matter what happens

Part 9: Breaking Down Your Concept of Self
Imagine you're locked in concrete house w/ protective shutters in an open field w/ sunshine
House = mental confines
walls of psyche = past emotions, experiences, hopes, dreams, memories-- thoughts
you build controllable fake world inside
your mind's walls breaks infinite uncontrollable universe into finite pieces you can wrap your head around
The fact that you are president, athlete, etc. is only memory
Thoughts are fake; don’t exist anymore
more concentration = slower object passes & stops after long enough you cling to on building fixed sense of self
time is infinite yet divided it into tomorrow, next week, month, to fit into mental model
personalities/persona, values, consistent thoughts, emotions, definitions = secure & predictable behaviors/ world
Expectations: try to alter others when they don’t act according to our expected behaviors ingrained by society
When defensive/rationalize, you defend self concept/walls you built b/c your existence is at stake
There is no winning though
When foundation is shaken, you patch the cracks in the walls with more thoughts (excuses, reasoning)
This model is very fragile and shatters easily by things out of your control
natural to avoid running into the walls that are the boundary, like a tiger in a cage
comfort zone = walls
You’ll know you’ve met them when you feel resistance, discomfort, & insecurity
You cling to consistency to build conceptual self
Events that happened to the moment happened already. Let them come and go instead of clinging
The center you watch disturbances from can’t get disturbed b/c awareness transcends all
Only way out of walls is being aware that you’re aware; You do have control
break mental model/Question self concept: observe when it shakes or collapses
Your mind can’t make up reality because it exists outside of you
you won’t live stressed out over everything
See why you do things by not doing them (b/c you’re comfortable w/ routine, expectations & comfort)
When you know why, dig down to next layer & ask why again
can’t actually hurt you when on the edge; shows path to freedom
Be willing to endure pain to push through the wall, go beyond
commit to go beyond; once & for all to always let go (don't feed it energy); never back to comfort zone
You’ll be at peace with the expansiveness of the universe because you won’t need to cling to stability

This is one part in a series of episodes on "The Untethered Soul".
Part 8 -- Pay the Price of Pain
Pain is just a temporary shift in energy
Embarrassment, jealousy, anger, hatred, are all just passing feelings
It can’t touch you if you don’t touch it
you're deep within your consciousness
When you avoid confronting the pain, you are avoiding things that aren’t actually happening/hurting you
What has hurt you has passed already
Your mind thinks of the associated event/memory as painful & doesn't want to let it go
On the other side of pain is freedom.
Only when you let it pass can you reach freedom
That tremendous heat/ burning energy you feel inside you when you feel pain (embarrassment, jealousy, anger, hatred etc.) is just the purification process of the energy
Give it room to pass
Stay open and receptive
The worst the world can do to you is hurt you
No need to be fearful; you know how to deal with the pain

This is one part in a series of episodes on "The Untethered Soul".
Part 7: Ultimate Freedom (of Your Soul)
We don’t know we’re suffering b/c we’ve never known what it’s like not to suffer
Thinking about self all the time is suffering b/c you’re trying to fix what’s wrong with you
You only notice your body when it is not okay
When functioning perfectly, you don’t notice
Non suffering means never needing to think about or devote your life trying to fix what’s wrong w/you
Your psyche isn’t okay b/c it has to do the impossible task of figuring out how to avoid fear and situations that will trigger your fears
Your mind is therefore untrustworthy and can mislead you
E.g. Trying to appease the problem by blaming the external world, finding external things to cover up the root problem/ outer solutions
Don’t listen, don’t buy into it
Stop expecting the mind to fix everything wrong with you
E.g. how to make everyone like me, how to get everything I want
You'll only have a never-ending stream of worries & problems
Identify root problem & watch the mind think
Thinking mind stops when you draw away your attention
The mind follows after the heart
When you let go from the heart 1st, the mind naturally will not follow through

This is one part in a series of episodes on "The Untethered Soul".
Part 6: Remove the Inner Thorn
Imagine a thorn stuck in your skin
Do you remove it now or leave it & don’t touch it?
Not touching it avoids dealing with the pain but you end up with a whole lifetime of temporary solutions to work around the thorn & spend too much energy trying to not touch it
Consciousness is drawn to most distracting object which only feeds it; not dealing right away wastes energy
you let it run your life & become the center of your universe
pain is minimized but doesn't go away
Taking the thorn out may be painful but it’ll heal over time until you don't feel pain
Resisting will only make you struggle more
Attempting to avoid problems only creates more problems
Having weakness only creates more weaknesses
b/c anyone/thing at any moment can cause great disturbance/ fear to you
To hide your weakness you try to keep things from happening or focus on things that already happened
Not letting go will distort/ cloud emotions, consciousness, & objectivity. Kick survival instinct into action
You become defensive & justify - You have expectation for how things should be & when they don’t go accordingly, you feel like things aren’t ok
Accept that how life unfolds is out of your control. Don’t fight it or be afraid of it
Life is actually trying to stimulate growth when you feel discomfort from fear
When that point resurfaces, let it go right away b/c it'll not get any easier later
embrace problems as an agent for growth instead of being defensive
embrace change at all times
To live life without fear:
Remember that fear is a blockage in the heart; inner pain is always there just hidden deep inside
Fear, insecurity, weakness, are just another thing we’re capable of experiencing
The discomfort you feel is often concealed by shallower problems
Remove the thorn by finding yourself
Dig to the deep root thorn below
Ask yourself why that pain is happening and peel back the layers to dig deep to the core issue
When the feelings come up, just watch it; ultimately let it pass

This is one part in a series of episodes on "The Untethered Soul".
Part 5: The Key is Letting Go
Why do you close your heart?
originally primal instinct to defend yourself physically, now defend self concept & ego
Everything little thing can trigger fear & insecurity & throw self concept out of balance
You’re just a small speck passing through the universe on a rock spinning around a sun in the middle of space
Don’t let meaningless things cause pain
When every little thing can cause pain, you create rules for things that can/can't happen in the external world (which is out of your control) to protect yourself
Everything now becomes a threat. You have so much vulnerabilities
You are no longer free to be yourself b/c you don't have control
To become liberated is simple: stop caring/protecting
Start by noticing disturbances to your heart
be conscious & recognize that you have ability to disengage
Don’t change, judge, or fight it
Concentrating on it only feed it and make it grow
The moment you feel a change in energy or pull drawing you in, relax
These energies will always be there so overcome them by learning to center yourself

This is one part in a series of episodes on "The Untethered Soul".
Part 4 -- Tap into Your Infinite Energy
Every thought & emotion uses energy
Pushing away, holding on, controlling, recalling, generating, & disciplining thoughts & emotions all require energy
You have infinite supply you can draw from at any time
Energy != the kind from food or sleep
Letting energy in = rush of joy, love, & enthusiasm
you can feel this all the time
Heart is the center of this energy
can allow energy in or restrict/push energy away
Flow of energy = sun that keeps shining no matter what
you could sit in the sun & embrace it or sit in the shade
Closing off = letting love waste away
Being open = letting energy pass in then out; taking notice, letting go
Thus, life = experiencing the present moment then the next one & the next
Energy not let go doesn’t disappear
Unfinished energy blocks the heart
When you feel salty, you’re fixated on the past; think abt. it constantly
Taking away focus from the present
It’s all inside of you still, kept in w/ nowhere to go until they can be released
They will come back up whenever triggered by anything in the neighborhood of that snapshot/memory
When stored energy is stimulated, it’s the best chance to finally let it pass instead of pushing it down again
Smile b/c you know the energy will be released now like purging toxins
When it’s painful coming in, it will be painful out but it’s only be temporary
ask yourself why you're not letting it go
Train to keep your heart open
Closing is a habit that you’ve developed because past experiences have programed us
Simply watch; Be aware & conscious
When you see yourself closing/tensing, choose consciously not to close; relax & open
Let everything pass through to be free, just let go, don’t trap energy
Nothing is ever worth closing for
Life can always be exciting
you can always feel inspired & enthusiastic

Part 3 — Train Your Awareness
Real awareness is being absorbed mentally, emotionally, and physically while taking notice of the world around you
Like watching a movie: you’re so engrossed you forget that you’re sitting in the dark with strangers
Concentrating means committing your senses, emotions, and thoughts
Full dimensional experience requires sound, sight, taste, smell, touch, thoughts, and feelings
When preoccupied with trying to control thoughts, feelings, & senses, you lose consciousness of present
True meditation means aware of being aware
pull back to see the big picture
the whole room from the finite to the infinite
on a floating rock in space moving around a star in the vast universe
remain aware that you can create thoughts
The world becomes something you just watch pass by -- like a movie
Use meditation to train & re-center yourself
Be aware you’re sitting there & say hello
Don’t think or talk to yourself
Take note in consciousness of what's happening on the inside & outside
Create a habit of stopping to notice
before opening the door, picking up the phone-- act as points to center consciousness so that it’ll train to be consistent/persistent consciousness all the time
Consciousness is a dynamic field of awareness, able to capture all or very little
You can concentrate on one finger or all thoughts and sensations, like capturing all details w/a single glance vs focus on one thing

This is one part in a series of episodes on "The Untethered Soul".
Part 2 -- Free Yourself from the Voice Inside (& Reach Pure Awareness)
Your consciousness != the voice inside
Voice inside constantly talks/ never shuts up
Just sit still & listen: you’ll hear it very quickly
Listen when you shower or any free time
Think of it as your inner roommate
Start by watching as if someone was in there with you
Externalize that voice as another person
view it objectively w/o letting emotions interfere
It’s not you talking (b/c you’re the one listening)
Thus, you can’t silence thoughts you don’t like
Make them your best friend instead
If they’re a real person, wouldn’t they be so annoying?
Notice how often they’re wrong yet has so much control over your life
You often have to convince it & listen to it or else you'll have on edge, doubtful, & anxious
Why do you let them control your life? Why do you care so much about what they say?
The voice inside your head is like backseat driving
Gives a sense of control & security over the external world that’s out of your control
Tries to protect you from the unknown
When that inner voice stops talking, you can take in details (& sensations) of everything all at once w/a single glance
vs looking while the voice in your head pointing things out
When you feel that all the time, you'll be truly independent from the inner roommate
Reclaim your life to live it how you want it, not driven by this voice
By no longer identifying with this voice -- recognize that’s it’s not you
You != thoughts, only aware; You != emotions, only feel; You !=your body, only experience through it

This is one part in a series of episodes on "The Untethered Soul". Part 1 -- Who are you? You are Your Consciousness.
- Those change easily. Would you not be you if you hadn’t gone to that school? Joined that sport? Done that thing?
- Those change easily too. Were you 5’4 when you were 4? Wasn’t that still you? You can easily change your appearance over time through growing, aging, or cosmetic procedures.
- You’re not the objects you’re looking at or the outside world b/c you’re the subject perceiving said objects of the outside world.
- The outside world and inner emotions that compete for your attention come and go but the you that is aware (taking notice of the world around you) doesn’t
Thus, you live in a state of consciousness.
The one that is aware is therefore “the self”.
You are you. You are your consciousness.

My own personal takeaways from reading Lucius Seneca's writing: On the Shortness of Life. Basically main points of things I want to remember and how I want to live my life from now on. Definitely not qualified to talk about philosophy. Cannot tell you the difference between Stoicism and Epicureanism. If you want to learn more about philosophy like I am doing right now, then Google is your friend. Be sure to also check out books from the library (digitally of course), and listen to philosophy podcasts from people who know what they're talking about! (I recommend Stephen West's "Philosophize This!").
