On this episode, I interview Fiona Reith, the UK's first Designing Your Life certified coach and a phenomenal career change coach I know from training together.
After noticing how practical her approach was to life and coaching her career change clients, I asked what her secret was and what Designing Your Life meant. She recommended I read a book for career and life change called Designing Your Life by Dave Evans and Bill Burnett who are both professors at Stanford University that teach Design Thinking. This was and is an absolute game-changer for me and I’m now training with the authors Bill and Dave directly in becoming a certified Designing Your Life coach in April this year.
This conversation gives you a glimpse of why design thinking is so useful, practical and why we both love it so much!
In this episode, we discuss:
Books:

In this episode, I talk to Tom Youngs who made the big leap from successfully starting a career in dentistry in a well-respected private practice in the UK, to jumping into entrepreneurship in tech startups.
I met Tom over five years ago - a well-respected coach I had hired suggested he meet me and it was at the start of his career change journey. Five years later, after a few pivots,I noticed how happy he was from a LinkedIn post celebrating working with his team in the tech startup world. So I wanted to find out more about how his career change unfolded.
This episode is particularly relevant for people who feel they have large sunk costs from being in a career for years or spending many years, and a lot of money, training in a profession. It’s also for those whose families are in the same profession as them. Tom ticks all these boxes and came out successfully in a new career he loves.

I’m talking about being involved in your community.

Have you ever felt stressed, unhappy or going on an unsustainable path in life or at work?
We all have, as humans, at some point in our lives, right?
In this week’s episode, we explore 6 levels of human experience which, when we are consciously aware of them, can be tremendously useful when we feel stuck or misaligned in our lives. This is particularly true in our careers when figuring out and trying to pin26point why we are not happy.
Matt Garrow-Fisher shares insight from his conversations with Burn From Within show guests, examining their career and also lives at each of the following levels of human experience to identify where we can have misalignment:
Level 1 - Environment
Level 2 - Behaviour
Level 3 - Skills & Capabilities
Level 4 - Beliefs and Values
Level 5 - Identity (a powerful identity realisation is shared by Matt Harry in this episode)
Level 6 - Purpose
Instead of feeling stuck or unable to pinpoint the source of stress, unhappiness and that feeling that we don't want to carry on the career or life path we are on, we can investigate these levels to make changes so we have a clearer path for peace, joy, security and happiness.
Matt Garrow-Fisher examines the model inspired by Gregory Bateson (an English anthropologist) and developed by a pioneer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming Robert Dilts called Neurological Levels of Change.
I hope you relate to the conversations shared in this episode and they help you to understand how you can start to use this model at each level in your own lives. Whether you feel internally misaligned in your career or in other life areas, to find opportunities to become more aligned and happy.

I talk to Jeremy Lipkowitz, who is a Search Inside Yourself certified teacher, a leadership coach, a meditation teacher, an emotional intelligence trainer, and founder of Untangling The Mind.
I met Jeremy in Chiang Mai, Thailand and found out that throughout his life, although he consistently achieved his academic and career goals, he felt empty inside and ultimately unhappy. This lead to unhealthy addictions, which Jeremy also openly talks about. This episode is a fascinating discussion about purpose, meaning and also some of the quite big career changes Jeremy has had personally in his life.
What I love about Jeremy is that he has a solid background in science, spending 4 years on his PhD in Genetics, and throughout his quest for happiness, he’s found some game-changing tools for high-achievers and high performers to find meaning and happiness, with or without having to change the job or career you’re in.

I talk to George McGehrin who founded The McGehrin Group, a national executive search firm, now turning over eight figures a year after being in business for 20 years.
The McGehren Group mostly deals with leaders at the C-suite level (CEO, CTO, CFO, CIO) all throughout Europe, the US and South America.
As well as managing his recruitment firm, George also coaches leaders on both their branding for career and their career paths. He decided to start a business, literally at the unemployment office, waiting to learn how much his employment check would be after getting laid off back in the year 2000, 20 years ago.
In this interview, I pick this executive recruiter's brains on the job market now post Covid-19 and his incredible mindsets and principles for a career change at the executive level. We discuss:

In this episode, I finally uncover where the concept of Burn From Within came from.
I talk about one of the key root causes for unhappiness and misery in people's lives - their career or lifestyle.
Many people are seemingly in a position financially and intellectually to work out they need and can change but often they don't do it until something painful happens, like a heart attack, breakup, death of a loved one or job loss.
I discuss two more proactive approaches as a catalyst for change that don't require these painful events and can help people make their change journeys smoother.
I also explain my background in interviewing people and uncovering stories, and noticing patterns with my years of decoding the difference that makes the difference in NLP that lead me on this path to the Burn From Within show.
Finally, I explain what the 3 key elements are to a happy life, and what it means to Burn From Within, and why everyone wants to be there.

In this episode, I talk to Matt Harry, who's the founder and chief investment officer. Of Cloudbreak asset management, one of Australia's first digital asset investment management companies. He was also the fastest Australian to swim the English channel back in 2013, raising $30,000 for Mental Health Research in doing so.
This interview is super inspiring because of the epic journey Matt took to get there and the reason why Mental Health Research meant so much to him.
Around 15 years prior to swimming the Channel, Matt’s life was in a very different place. Living in Kings Cross, Sydney, Matt was a daily heroin user, living in a one bedroom flat with 3 other users.

On this episode, I talk to Stevie Bellamy, a British-sounding former construction business owner based in Australia, who, not only has an uncanny resemblance to Brian May from the band Queen, but also has founded a beautiful charity for children in India and Nepal called The Pencil Tree. It started from recognizing that kids didn't even have and couldn't afford pencils in their schools. Recognising this and his ability to use his skills and resources to make a difference with this third world challenge, Stevie began to really light up inside and discovered a new passion and purpose. His charity now gives the lives of hundreds of children across India and Nepal and their families a brighter future. But Stevie realised that the biggest smile and most fulfilled person involved was actually himself.

This is a well-thought out story of career change at 35 years old, planned meticulously to now blossoming into a burning-from-within reality. The plan took three years for Mrugank Patel (MP) to execute fully. Managing a big transition from a six-figure salary at a bank in Australia working in IT to turning to becoming a psychotherapist took time, patience, planning and hard work, And it paid off.
Career change at 35: a three-year plan
After reading a very popular post on an online forum with the question of ‘How’s your life after quitting IT industry and what are you doing currently?’, I was inspired to contact Mrugank Patel (MP). His answer beautifully shared his career change story. And in the process, he gathered very quickly almost 70,000 views and hundreds of comments and upvotes. When I read it, I understood why.
MP spent most of his professional life in Australia and earned a six-figure salary for many years as an IT management consultant. He was fortune to work in several well-respected Fortune 500 companies in Australia.
After achieving his financial and career goals, he started asking “Will I be doing what I’m doing right now till I turn 65 (retirement age)? Will I be doing the 9 to 5 thing for another 30+ years?”
MP wanted more meaning in his life. So to find it, he studied human psychology and behaviour. And so his three-year journey of career change at 35 years old began. The plan also successfully transitioned his wife from a career in pathology to a dietician!
This video interview digs deeper to discuss how MP:

Coming out of early retirement to find purpose – Steve PolaskiEarly retirement sounds great, right? Many people go through their entire career looking forward to retirement.
But what is it like to retire early and enjoy the freedom it brings long before you are in your sixties or seventies? I got curious about what it was like to retire early from someone who had lived a very successful corporate career.
It turns out, the word purpose and meaning come to your attention even more after you have enjoyed the freedom to follow your passions after working so hard in a demanding yet financially rewarding career.
My friend, coach and business leader Steve Polaski retired early in his forties after a successful career in manufacturing operations. He built his wealth up considerably to the point where he had a few million dollars cashed in the bank, bought a 7,000 sq foot mansion with staff, sports cars, bikes, you name it in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
After spending his new ‘workweek’ Monday to Friday playing golf, he realized he was living for himself and wanted to teach his four year old son principles for life from leading by example.
After immersing himself in personal development and heading up the operations of a well-established Asian coaching business, he began to find more meaning in his life.
This is the story of a shift in purpose, leading to major career changes from early retirement to becoming a coach and now also back to running a public company, this time with a brand new purpose and meaning behind it (with money not being the primary driver).
If you are working hard so you can retire well, this talk will give you a whole new perspective so you show up differently in life and rethink your purpose behind that.

Burnout can be caused by many things – a build up of stress, anxiety, long working hours, poor sleep are some factors.
In Malia Grigg’s case, the nature of her work was a big part of it. As Director of Social Media for The Daily Beast and previously in demanding roles at Comedy Central and Cosmopolitan in New York City, her work usually involved being ON for most of the time she was awake.
The global nature of her role, particularly working in social media, with almost constant updates of stories and responding to posts from readers, made the ability to switch off and mentally rest very difficult.
Burnout is more prevalent now the internet means you can work 24/7
In many jobs, the culture and nature of the work promotes working way past the traditional 9-5 hours. Without recognizing this and responding to it, the result can be very serious consequences for your health and wellbeing. And it can also be quite costly on your finances too, as Malia shares.
In this revealing interview, Malia shares her experience in resisting the clear signs that her health was suffering years before, and focuses on the reason she quit her job due to burnout.
For anyone who has resisted listening to their body and mind telling them to take better care of themselves (physically, mentally and emotionally), this is a unique story of what happens when you let burn out get to the point of needing to quit, and the aftermath that follows.
If you are suffering from burnout, listen to this real life advice from someone that has gone through it and continues to repair from it, so that you can learn from her valuable lessons and rebalance your life now before you have more serious health and happiness consequences.

I just got inspired by this man – Luke Mickelson. A man who started a phenomenal charity Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) over in Idaho, USA back in 2012 after Leaving his six-figure salary (he was actually offered ownership in the business worth millions of dollars which he also turned down).
Now SHP runs over 200 chapters across 46 US states and 3 countries and helps over 28,000 kids receive for free their very own bunk beds that their parents just couldn’t afford before.
In this conversation, I asked how he made that tough decision to quit his well-paid job to focus on his charity. We discuss where purpose comes from, leaps of faith in life and leading decisions from good intentions and choosing a life path 50 years from now with no regrets.
I hope this inspires you to look for opportunities to live with purpose, and perhaps even prompt you to start your own SHP chapter in your community so kids with no bed can have one too.
Here’s the video interview: https://burnfromwithin.com/six-figure-salary-to-build-a-charity/
Luke has been featured in US national news stories for his charity work and dedication to serving his community. His humans helping humans philosophy has earned him a spot as a CNN Hero Top 10 candidate, an NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt special, and interviews on the NBC’s Today Show, People Magazine, Good Morning America and many others. In this interview, we discuss the structure for why and how he got out, the plan he set for his year off, his personal profit and loss plan for managing his finances during his career transition, deadlines for success, volunteering and the importance of feedback from others, and how he found balance back into his life.

What is a portfolio career?
Quite simply, it’s holding several different roles (paid or unpaid), often involving very different skillsets working on different projects. It’s a way to showcase and develop multi interest areas of your life (passions, strengths, meaningful work) so you create a balance and variety in how you spend your workweek or year. As opposed to one full-time job, portfolio careers often involve one role being contract or freelance-based, using a strengths built from a previous full-time job or career often, to cover much of your living expenses. The other roles may further increase income and you may be able to create a role purely to give back to society.
In Phil Evangelou’s case, not too long ago he was in a high-pressure city job as a lawyer for several year and made a big change. After living in Africa for a few months, learning new skills to start businesses remotely, he was inspired to not only start an ecommerce business with his friend, he also founded his own incredible charity, Kupendo Kids
This is a story of how to find balance in life, building a portfolio career rather than just one job, and how to bring passion to your work and where purpose can be found in your life to give it true meaning. So if you feel that being tied to one role is limiting your creativity and potential, you want more variety in your work life, or you simply want to give back and perhaps start or work for a charity, this talk is for you.

Transferable skills are the strengths you realise and don’t realise yet
When you leave your career, you may feel you are wasting the hard earned skills that you’ve developed over the years. This is the story of how to transfer your skills to completely new industries so you thrive and keep your passion.
Often when we look at how we have spent time outside of work, we can get clues. These clues can tell us:
In Max’s case, taking a year to study in Spain. And following his curiosity to travel, he found a passion: speaking to people from different nationalities and exploring city streets. These newly found passions turned into a walking tour business.
How to break into a new industry: take a stock take of your developed skills and network!
By developing skills in one career or business, you can recognise what skills you can use in different industries. And being curious about who else is using these transferable skills and speaking with them could launch you into your new career. Or at the very least, give you ideas for your new direction in life.
In Max’s case, the people skills he developed on Wall Street and talking to strangers in Barcelona in his study year were very transferable. So much so, he used them to launch a business in leading walking tour groups across Manhattan. As a result, these skills were also later used in the real estate market too!
This interview will inspire you to reflect on what transferable skills you have developed in different roles over the years. Consider projects you have been involved in inside and outside of work.
So watch this honest thought-provoking interview to get a real insight into what it takes to start a passion-based business. And be inspired on how to pivot into new industries when your life circumstances change.

When you challenge yourself by setting yourself goals outside of your comfort zone, what can happen? And what if those goals are simply the 100 things you want to do before you die?
Author of the book and TV host on ESPN’s series ‘100 Things: What’s On Your List?’, Seb Terry shared a beautiful conversation about how he followed his passions and now has found real purpose in his life helping people all over the world.
The Moment He Decided His 100 Things To Do Before You Die
After graduating, Seb felt lost with no purpose. He decided to travel, and while backpacking in Canada, he got tragic news that his good friend Chris had passed away at the age of just 24. Reflecting on Chris’ life and what a life well-lived and happiness could be like, Seb created a list of 100 things to do before he died, and went on a quest to complete them around the world.
This unfolded into a journey of publishing a book on his experiences, landing a TV series with ESPN, moving to LA from Sydney, and finding his true values, passion and purpose finally in life. It seems when you challenge yourself and focus your time and goal setting to do what interests you, magic can indeed happen!
Challenge yourself to find your true calling
Seb has now created an online peer-to-peer platform for giving called Kindsum, which is facilitating meaningful connections with people around the world and creating opportunities to help and volunteer to help people from simple to deeply life changing ways. He talks more about examples of its use in the show and how you can get involved.
Watch this interview to really understand what you can do to discover your purpose and why you should set your goals based on your passions.
