Life in Commune: Recent Episodes

Patrick Beach & Carling Harps

with a decade of partnership, entrepreneurship, a few laps around the world, two yoga studios, and toddler in tow; Patrick and Carling share their insight, successes, and failures with listeners each week. Life in Commune regularly features our teaching team at Commune Yoga Studio, explores inside takes on the Yoga & Wellness industry, resources for yoga teachers, practitioners, and business owners, relationship perspectives, deep dives into mindfulness, industry guest interviews (and maybe a little pop culture threw in) to see what it means to truly live a Life in Commune.

When Carling gave birth to Harvey we spent a good amount of time in the hospital, which led to us discussing when are our experiences nurturing growth versus when are we becoming numb to get through the moment.

In the yoga practice we all strive to be as present as possible and not wish moments of our life away, but in reality that is only a goal at which we can strive for. Life comes in waves, some of them you will wish would never end and others that you wish would never start. Either way you see things currently how can we live with an opportunistic mindset to explore what is in front of us at the moment to continue to grow as people.

In this episode we discuss what exactly "Alignment Yoga" is and how we might define the differences between "Good" and "Bad" alignment. With the rise in popularity of group yoga asana classes, the need for standard cueing and aesthetics may have led us to believe that there are right and wrong ways to practice so we wonder who exactly gets to decide many lineages gilded alignment rules, and if we really can apply them as students and teachers.

After a week off of podcasting to welcome the newest member of the family into the world, Patrick and Carling are back chatting about the age old question, can you teach it if you can't do it?

They discuss how embodiment, rather than performance, is the attribute that can help a teacher trans, mute their concepts with integrity & passion. How the same concept can be taught more diversely when we come from a place of personal experience, no matter what level it is.

We all procrastinate. It is one of the most impossible things to avoid, sometimes we all need that sense of urgency to kick in so we can transform into our best selves, but other times it can lead to stress and negativity.

Carling and Patrick posit the effectiveness of their unique procrastination tactics, and wonder if there may be some upside to deadlines and urgency. With the baby-countdown in full effect, they admit it might have actually be easier to get ready mentally and spiritually, than it has been physically.

The illusive art of doing nothing. In a world of stimulation and perpetual busy, should we really be seeking out idle time? Patrick and Carling discuss how the impetus for this conversation came from a Tyler the Creator song, how maybe we were all actually a bit more mindful back when we were teenagers, and wonder if its possible to truly give ourselves permission to do nothing?

Navigating the big world of yoga is no joke these days. There are more styles, studios, and teachers than ever before. This is amazing (!) but can also become very confusing when trying to find what will work best for you.

As long time fans of Game of Thrones, Patrick and Carling take time to talk about the show, the perspectives it brings up, and wonder whether emotion or logic are the keys to the kingdom both on and off the screen. Sure, it's pop culture, but all the very best creations offer us moral quandaries and divisive narratives - which ones we identify with is it what its all about.

SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched GOT, then this probably isn't the episode for you. If you don't like GOT, then this probably isn't the episode for you either ;)

In this episode we discuss the pervasive messaging that we should be able to "do it all" and how that affects our notions of control, worthiness, and living in the moment. What does it actually mean to "do it all" and why do we think we can, or should be able to anyways?

Patrick reflects of the difficulties of feeling out of control even in simple unexpected daily situations and Carling wonders if shes actually following her own advice or if she has succumb to the modern woman's expectations of "having it all" while setting expectations for her recovery from childbirth.
