Although we did have a few sets in the main club room hosting our own takeover with Sunset People Project from Jakarta and warming up for the likes of Marcellus Pitttman, K-Hand and many more, our favourite place to play was the Bunker. Providing ample opportunities to flex some more room 2 vibes and provide the soundtrack in a more intimate setting. Many a wild night had in this tunnel!I have quite a few of these recordings, two of which are already uploaded (check the bunker sessions playlist). EXCURSIONS MIX 001 - LOVERS ROCK One for the Lovers, Lovesick & Lonely this valentines... this wasn't intended to be a Valentines release but i've been sitting on it for a while, so thought this would be an appropriate time to set it free into the world.
My love of Reggae started for me when i picked up a free Trojan Records CD with a magazine as a boy. In particular, I’ve always loved the more soppy off shoot, Lovers Rock, a genre born in the dying days of the Rocksteady era in Jamaica but also has heavy cultural roots in London, when it boomed in the 1970’s. Lyrically and musically, as the title suggests known for its more melodic and romantic content, from stories of being in love, the pain and loneliness that heartbreak brings - they are tracks that those that have hearts and have loved will all relate to at some point in their lifetime (even if they won’t admit it!)
Championed by artists such as John Holt, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Alton Ellis & countless more, this sub genre of Reggae provokes and encapsulates all the beautiful joys and miseries that love can bring…
ABOUT EXCURSIONS In this series i aim to take a trip, or as I like to call it, an excursion, back in time to traverse and explore my personal influences crossing over a wide spectrum of soundscapes that have all been a part of my past and continue to influence my present.
I’m always on the quest for new music and over the years have obsessed at one point or another about particular sounds and vibes, or ‘genres’ if you want to call them that. While some may call these ‘phases’ (they may well be right), the knowledge and feeling of those particular moments never fully leave you. This is a big part of the joy of collecting music for me. While these sounds may not be at the forefront of what I’m up to in the now, whether that be DJing or just listening, the different points or ‘obsessions’ all make up my musical DNA and influence a great deal of my day to day life, even in the background, subconsciously, somewhere there is a little man that sits inside my head with a gramophone that occasionally decides to put on an old forgotten classic and take me on a trip down memory lane.
