Ann Brennan, your no-nonsense host, doesn't just skim the surface; she digs deep into how countless home service businesses are blatantly leaving money on the table by ignoring the basics of website optimization. This episode is a wake-up call to all home service companies out there: optimizing your website isn't just a fancy digital tactic; it's your ticket to grabbing that low hanging fruit in the SEO world. From making damn sure your website visitors immediately understand what you do, to leveraging your BNI and chamber memberships for high authority backlinks, Ann covers it all. If you're tired of generic SEO advice and ready for real, actionable strategies specific to home service marketing, this episode is your holy grail.

Use Long-Tail Keywords

  • Understanding Customer Search Habits: Dive deep into the specific phrases and questions your potential customers are typing into search engines. Long-tail keywords often capture the exact intent of the user, making them more valuable for targeted traffic.
  • Content That Matches User Intent: Create content that directly addresses these long-tail queries. Whether it's blog posts, FAQs, or service pages, ensure your content is rich with these specific phrases that potential customers are searching for.
  • Competitive Edge: Long-tail keywords are generally less competitive but highly specific. By targeting them, you're likely to rank higher in search results for users who are closer to making a decision or purchase.

  • Get High Authority Backlinks:

  • Leveraging Relationships: Utilize your business connections, such as suppliers, industry partners, and local business associations, to secure backlinks from their websites.

  • Quality Content: Produce high-quality, informative content that others in your industry will want to link to. This could include original research, comprehensive guides, or insightful commentary on industry trends.
  • Guest Blogging and Collaboration: Reach out for guest blogging opportunities on reputable industry sites or collaborate with influencers and thought leaders. These partnerships can result in valuable backlinks to your site.

  • Optimize Your Google Business Profile:

  • Complete and Accurate Information: Ensure every detail in your Google Business Profile is complete and up-to-date. This includes your business name, address, phone number, hours of operation, and services offered.

  • Encourage and Respond to Reviews: Actively encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and make it a point to respond to them. This not only shows prospective customers that you value feedback but also signals to Google the legitimacy and activity of your business.
  • Utilize All Features: Make the most of all the features Google offers, like posts for special offers or updates, adding photos of your work or team, and answering FAQs directly on your profile.

By focusing on these strategies – utilizing long-tail keywords for targeted content, securing high authority backlinks for credibility, and optimizing your Google Business Profile for local visibility – home service companies can significantly enhance their online presence and SEO effectiveness.

Chris Brogan joins us for this episode of the ASMM Small Business Connections Podcast to talk about why you should think about your business as a show. In today’s marketing space, it is more important than ever to figure out how to engage your audience between their purchases when they may or may not want to buy. For 2021 and beyond we continue to find new ways to gain our audience’s attention.

We discuss:

“Why should a business think about itself as a show?”

“You’re changing your title to ‘Showrunner.’ What’s that about?”

“Can you run a business without thinking about it as a show?”

“What are the practical elements to work through to make a show?"

Turning your business into a show is a means of packaging your business’s information to stay top of mind when our audience is deciding to buy. Gain someone’s attention and make good use of it. We learned in 2020 that localized businesses do really matter and that the community will support their local businesses.

The showrunner role is similar to that of the CEO in regard to theme maintenance. The CEO’s responsibility is to define the vision of the business while recruiting and nurturing the staff who are going to keep the vision flowing. As a showrunner, the question to answer is, what do I need to do to take into account the theme or scope of the business. The marketing goal of the showrunner is to get the little rectangle box out of someone’s pocket and gain the audiences’ attention. Chris uses the Mandalorian as an example. The showrunner-CEO is the director who ensures the theme actor delivers their lines in character, staying with the theme as a whole. The showrunner figures out new ways to run your business.

Chris Brogan is president of Chris Brogan Media, offering business storytelling and marketing advisory help for mid to larger-sized companies. Chris is a sought after keynote speaker and the New York Times bestselling author of nine books and counting. He’s working on his tenth: title forthcoming. His latest project is The Backpack Show: a business show dedicated to finding insights from unusual places.

In this episode of Small Business Connections, Ann talks with Alex Ray about self-confidence.

They discuss:

  • Why Self-Confidence Is The Key To Happiness

  • Can we learn to be more self-confident?

  • How bravery plays into self-confidence

  • Plus, his one tip to help people learn to truly be themselves

Alex Ray is a life coach who helps others in the LGBTQIA+ community overcome insecurity. He teaches bravery as a way to overcome low self-esteem, people-pleasing, and fear of failure. He's a life coach, podcaster, and doggie dad.

When asked to describe himself, Alex says:

"I used to be extremely insecure. Most of my brain power felt like it was going towards thinking about what other people thought of me. And I had a mental list of the things I wished I could do but felt totally inadequate to do them. In 2017 I hit rock bottom. I felt completely empty, constantly trying to earn value from what I could do for others. And no matter how much I achieved, I still felt worthless. That October I tried to end my own life. I'm so thankful I was unsuccessful. What I learned on the other side of that experience though, I wouldn't change for the world. The confidence I was always seeking came from learning to live bravely.

Now I coach members of the community who feel stuck in their own insecurities and fear. I help them live bravely so they can break that cycle and thrive not just survive."

In this episode of Small Business Connections, Ann talks about ways to never stop growing and the importance of realizing your time value with software entrepreneur, the founder of Onestop Devshop, Geordie Wardman. They discuss how Geordie transitioned from being a forest firefighter to an entrepreneur, ecommerce, time management, pivoting online and Geordie’s favorite books of business. Onestop Devshop builds software for websites and mobile applications for small businesses.

Ecommerce Solutions

Geordie recommends as a brick and mortar to develop your online presence in order to gain revenue online, while as a consultant, it is vital to develop your digital audience. Ann mentions that today’s digital audience is your foot traffic. Businesses need to make sure their business is easily accessible. Onestop DevShop offers Shopify apps and other applications to make it easier for customers to find you online.

Pivoting Online

The sooner you start the more established you will become. Geordie suggests creating something you can continue after the pandemic. The flux of working from home and continuing to work from home will continue for many businesses. Ann shares the best time to plant a tree was 50 years ago or today.

Time Management

Geordie masterminds with other entrepreneurs and found that time is an entrepreneur’s most valuable asset. If time is trouble, put a value of your hour, what you would charge for your time. Geordie recommends tracking your time and reviewing after a month to reveal tasks you can change the amount of time you spent. Geordie says that no CEO should be working on the same thing twice. You will discover tasks you should delegate or hire someone to do for you. OneStop DevShop developed the app, ticktocklab.com and as a listener of the show, if you mention you heard it here, on the Small Business Connections Podcast, he will offer you a discount on the app.

Geordie graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in forestry. Married and coming to the realization that forest firefighting was taking him away from his wife and the pay only comes through when on the fire, Geordie switched into a computer career. He completed some Oracle certifications and entered the corporate world. It took two years and Geordie knew it was worth his while. He is now on the other side of his entrepreneurial journey and has been at it for 15 years.

In this episode of Small Business Connections, Ann talks all about copy with copywriter, web designer, intuitive business mentor and podcast host, Liz Theresa of LizTheresa.com. Liz settles the big question of which is more important: good copy or hot looking website.

Right from the start, it was divulged that Liz is from the Boston area. The word wicked flowed out of Liz's mouth and Ann caught it on the spot. Getting to know Liz, she shared the fun fact that she has seen half of the country. Liz's enthusiasm is infectious as they share a few laughs and discuss all things copy related.

Let's define copy, it's the words you use to communicate about your business. Liz writes copy about clients when she interviews her clients about their business. Copy matters. You can have a posh website but, if it doesn't tell about you and what your business offers you are not going to reach as many people.

Liz helps entrepreneurs launch and build online businesses. Building an effective website begins with your number one call to action and clarity of what you want your website to do. Liz and Ann discuss the importance of conveying the message; what you wish people knew about you.

In addition to copywriting and web design, Liz hosts the podcast, Liz on biz. Be sure to check it out and, tell her how you found the show. Every Monday, she delivers 30 minutes of entrepreneurship. Liz started her podcast in 2016, on Election Day (listen to hear why not to do that). The Liz on biz podcast is getting ready to celebrate its 200th episode with the CEO of Hint, Kara Goldin.

In this episode of Small Business Connections, Ann talks with Nathan Greenberg, founder of Arkside Marketing, a full-service advertising agency specializing in regulated industries. Together they discuss Nathan's philosophy of there are only two kinds of days, his serial entrepreneurship and the two rules of marketing.

Nathan says anyone can market. The question is, how to market effectively. At Arkside, they partner with franchisees and regulated industries such as automotive, law, financial, health care, casino gaming, trade groups and manufacturing. Nathan and his agency figure out how to be compliant with each industry's regulations and provide ways to market effectively while creating visually pleasing advertising campaigns.

As a serial entrepreneur, Nathan has started seven companies. He began in high school when started creating websites for local businesses. He taught himself how to create HTML and enough photoshop to build local businesses ' websites. Growing from this, Nathan learned that you have to love a business's idea in order to properly represent the company.

Nathan shares that he was inspired by the motivational posters of his youth and one that stuck with him is- "Your Altitude is Determined by Your Attitude." Two years ago, Nathan turned this outlook into his perception of there are only two kinds of days. Many describe the two types of days as good days and bad days. Nathan does not accept bad days. He lives his life of taking what someone might describe as a bad day and calls these, educational days. Nathan shares that he learns something from these days and this perspective allows him to do more with his life. There are plenty of moments of failure and every misstep offers learning opportunities. These moments helped shape his company into a better company. This outlook has Nathan in the midst of writing his book- 2 Kinds of Days. #2kindsofdays

Nathan shares his 2 rules of marketing:

  1. Marketing should always be treated as an investment.

  2. Never make it hard for someone to give you their money.

As a marketing professional, Nathan shares that word of mouth is the best advertising you will receive. Marketing as partners and not as vendors are important to sustain a successful business.

In this episode of Small Business Connections, Ann talks with Jonathan Kiekbusch, a life long entrepreneur and Founder of SEOButler, The i2W Agency and the WeRCMO.

Jonathan shares his experiences and expertise as we discuss:

-Recruiting the right team

-The Sleeping Giant Strategy for scaling your business

-Why SOPs are crucial and how to build them

-How to work ON your business, not IN it

-How not to take advantage of small businesses' marketing

Jonathan shares that recruiting, growing and developing new businesses is not a one size fits all strategy. He recommends leveraging what you do really well to figure out the best use of your time. Deciding to recruit and hire requires the discovery of your hourly worth.

Jonathan reminds us that being an entrepreneur is naturally stressful and time consuming. Analyzing the stress of caring for your business and managing the stress and work/life balance is crucial to both the success of your business and yourself. Jonathan suggests getting out of the trenches of your business for a different perspective of how your business operates. This is vital for growth and useful for determining your business SOPs. Successful business owners will look at their business from the outside in.

Jonathan recommends examining your business this way:

-You serving the customer

-You serving the team

-The team serving the customers

In this episode of Small Business Connections Ann talks about the myths of leadership with personal strategist and facilitator, Jodi Hume of LeadingClarity.com. The analogies, metaphors and stories are heartfelt and help clear up what it takes to be a good and effective leader. We all need help sometimes and, that is exactly what Ann and Jodi provide.

Why are there myths about leadership? People are not born leaders- that's another myth, for another day. Ann and Jodi talk and share stories that provide clearer insight into two leading ladies' busy careers.

The 4 myths we discuss-

It's Lonely at the Top- MYTH BUSTED

Leading is is an endurance sport- MYTH BUSTED

Leading is Knowing- MYTH BUSTED

Leading means having all the answers- MYTH BUSTED

Jodi quotes Seth Godin's "The problem you can't talk about... is now TWO problems." Ann and Jodi dive deep into their experiences sharing that #youarenotalone and the importance of not having all the answers is part of being a leader. Coordinating help is vital to being a leader. This is where leadership gains energy and the business moves successfully forward.

Jodi realized she was a facilitator at a young age and compares this discovery to a peanut M&M, separating the variables, she found her entrepreneurial skill.

Jodi works with founders and leaders around the world, helping them from the beginning stages of a start-up business, through the growing pains and celebrates the victories. Jodi is a certified CoActive Coach, a trained skilled facilitator from Johns Hopkins University and has a Psychology Degree from Loyola University. You can also find Jodi singing with The Wafflers, a Blues & Folk Band, and as a host on her podcast, So Here's My Story...

So many great stories are shared in these 40 something minutes. One we have to mention is Ann's story about endurance. Leading is an endurance sport so, you have to treat it like one. You have to rest, hydrate and train. Ann completed an Ironman competition and knows what endurance that took. She talks about her good friend Bill Bradley and his ultra-endurance races. Bill tells Ann, if I would just call you and you remind me to rest for 30 minutes, I would get the rest I need to complete the challenge.

In this episode of Small Business Connections, we discuss referrals- asking for, giving, and growing your business referrals, with Stephen Crisp of Nerd Singing. The booming growth of Stephen's business comes from referrals, mastering his craft and his pivotability. Stephen makes disciples, not clients by helping them problem solve and his desire to be the best part of his clients' day. When you help a client solve a problem, they then tell other people how you helped solve their problem. Understanding your clients leads to more clients and ultimately builds your network and your business.

Stephen and Ann talk about the importance of delegation and not telling people you are too busy, as this leads to potentially lessening your referrals. Stephen realized there was a better way to gain time and this was by expanding his business and hiring employees. Offering the science of singing and helping clients develop their voices grew into Stephen becoming an artistic mentor.

Pivoting in the pandemic created more business and more referrals. Showing clients you care because you believe in your product leads to referrals. Your next level product is seeing an opportunity instead of an obstacle and building on it.
