Archiving AK with the UAA/APU Archives
UAA/APU Archives and Special Collections collects, preserves, describes, and makes accessible records that document Alaska's past and present. In our podcast, Archiving AK, we interview fellow archivists, users of archives, and discuss our collections.
Julia O'Malley, granddaughter of Fred and Lidia Selkregg, speaks with archivist Becky Butler Gallegos about her family's papers. Lidia Selkregg was a land use planner, University of Alaska Anchorage faculty member, earthquake researcher, and Anchorage Assemblywoman (among many other things!). Fred was an insurance adjustor, Postmaster of Anchorage, code enforcement officer (again, among many other things!). It's the peak of tourism season in Alaska, so we're reading letters from tourists in our holdings! We'll hear from folks traveling the Inside Passage, through the Interior, and even out to Western Alaska.
Join us as Rachel Nill, the summer intern, introduces you to oral history and hear her own interview about her experience as a student at UAA.
Special guests include the UAA/APU Consortium Library's very own Ryan O'Mara and our Archives intern Rachel Nill. They'll share about their military and archives experience and read selections of letters from individuals stationed in Alaska during World War II.
Special guests Fabiola Lugo Vasquez, Dr. Wendy Replogle Strawbridge, and Dr. Hild read letters from public health professionals throughout Alaska's history. Fabiola explains her project with the Alaska Public Health Association records. We also hear an interview with Native elder Della Keats and community health aides discussing nutrition.
Our archivists read letters from our holdings about the 1964 Alaska earthquake in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the earthquake on March 27, 2024.

In part two of this podcast, we focus in on their oral history program. They talk about how they've gone about planning and conducting the project with an eye to celebrating and honoring their community, with a goal to make it possible for community members to feel represented in the project.

Desiree is the museum specialist at Wrangell - St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Alissa and Chris are with The Great Basin Institute. The Great Basin Institute provides opportunities for people to get experience in natural and cultural heritage work throughout the United States and they're partnering with Wrangell St. Elias Park to allow the Park to make more of their archival collection accessible. In this episode we talk about that project, the types of materials held in the archives at Wrangell St. Elias, The Great Basin Institute and what they do, and quite a bit about these types of positions for entry level and early career archivists.
