⇢ "Why is my relationship with my teenager so difficult and why can't we be closer?"

⇢ "Why does my child seem anxious or depressed all the time?"

⇢ "How much video game time is too much time?"

Everyday in my Southern California private practice, I help Modern Parents solve these challenges - and even more! - and I want to bring my tips, tricks, and strategies to YOU.

The goal of this podcast is to share what really works so that you can feel more confident with your parenting ability - and to create a close and positive parent-child bond.

Parents confide in me all the time that they're tired, overwhelmed by all of the tasks screaming to get done on their to-do list -- and that they feel like they don't get enough time to be with their family.

But what if I told you that there is ONE SIMPLE parenting strategy that could not only help you feel more peaceful and give you more time with your family, but it also makes your child or teen a better person too?

You might be surprised to learn that all you have to do is to make sure you're using family routines and rituals.

What are family routines and rituals? How EASY are they to create? And why are there so many benefits to using them?

Listen to this episode to find out. Here's a snapshot of what you'll learn:

[1:30] How my family routines and rituals (particularly two recent ones) have helped me stay close and connected with my family

[4:38] What exactly a family routine is - and you'll get examples too!

[9:38] How family rituals differ from routines — but they're just as important!

Do I still need to convince you that you need family routines and rituals NOW? Ok. Let's explore what science says about them...

[13:50] Research says that routines and rituals bring us closer as a family - they are associated with marital satisfaction, adolescents' sense of personal identity, and stronger family relationships

[15:10] More research studies show that consistent routines and rituals help young people manage their day-to-day stress

[19:15] Got a child or teen with sleep issues? Research also says that young people with routines and rituals get more - and better quality - sleep

[21:00] Got a child or teen with ADHD symptoms? Routines and rituals can help with that too!

[24:10] Routines and rituals have also been shown to help young people navigate intense stressors (i.e. parental divorce, family or pet death, moving to a new city, etc.) a lot easier

[27:10] Finally, my own observation: family routines and rituals are one of the best ways to teach -- and model -- important life lessons

Now that you know you need some good family routines and rituals, how do you start them?

[29:00] My 5 steps to creating GREAT family routines and rituals that bring peace, connection, and organization to the family

Finally, I know you LOVE examples, so...

[32:40} Example #1: creating a new family routine using all 5 steps

[36:10] Example #2: Creating a "loose" and casual family routine

Here is part 2 of my series on parenting young people with anxiety.

The previous episode and this episode gives you (in detail) my 4-step Anxiety Management Plan. I teach this plan to all the families that I work with in my private practice - so I know it works!

Here's the plan:

Step 1: Identify the anxiety triggers

Step 2: Rate the anxiety

Step 3: Use coping skills as necessary

Step 4: Use cognitive reframe skills as necessary

Confused? Need more detail on how to use coping skills and cognitive reframe skills? Then tune in to the episode to learn exactly how to coach your young person through each step of the plan so that they learn that they are in control of their anxiety - not the other way around.

Timestamp:

[1:31] Quick discussion on a new research study on kids, empathy...and art museums?

[9:00] Overview of Step 2 - rate the anxiety

[24:15] Overview of Step 3 - use coping skills as necessary

[31:14] Overview of Step 4 - use cognitive reframe skills as necessary

[38:40] TWO examples of how to coach a young person through all 4 steps of the anxiety management plan

For an explanation of why some young people struggle with anxiety and an overview of step 1, tune into Episode #40.

Tired of feeling helpless when your young person experiences an anxious episode?

Whether parenting a young child or teenager, the strategies I talk about today will help you feel confident in supporting your young person through their anxiety.

It may not be possible to eliminate your young person's anxiety for them, but you can help them learn how to manage and take charge of it, rather than letting anxiety control their life.

The topic of young people and anxiety is a BIG one - and I want to be as helpful as possible - so I’ve broken this topic into two different podcast episodes. Today’s episode will give you the background knowledge about young people and anxiety that you’ll need to be effective when working with your YP. You’ll leave this episode with an understanding of WHY some YP struggle with anxiety - what causes it and why it’s so hard to “fix” overnight.

I’ll also introduce you to my 4 step system for working with a YP who is in the process of an anxious episode. Not only do I teach this system to the parents who come to me for help at my Southern California practice, but I’ve used it over and over again with my daughter, when she struggled with anxiety.

Then, this episode will end with talking about the first step in the system which is all about identifying - and working with - the triggers that cause your YP’s anxiety.

You’ll definitely leave the episode feeling like you now have a game plan in helping your YP overcome their anxiety, instead of helplessly watching them struggle each time they go through an anxious episode.

[7:59] The reasons why some young people struggle with anxiety while others don't

[9:38] The three factors that create anxiety

[13:59] The four types of anxiety: which one describes your young person's anxiety the best?

[20:14] The symptoms of anxiety in young children

[21:44] The symptoms of anxiety in tweens and teens

[24:32] The 4-step anxiety action plan

[25:58] Step 1: Identifying triggers (what are they anyway?)

[27:17] The three types of triggers that you need to be aware of

[29:12] Should your young person avoid their anxious triggers OR tackle them head on?

Then, in the next episode, I’ll dive into steps 2-4 of the anxiety system where I'll teach you about about coping skills, reframing anxious thoughts into empowering thoughts, and everything else you’ll need to teach your YP to take control over their anxiety instead of allowing their anxiety to control them.

My primary objective while assisting young individuals with anxiety is to empower them with the knowledge that they hold the reins of control over their anxiety. This is contrary to the false belief that anxiety controls their lives. I think that you’ll see how the plan that I give to you in this episode - and further discuss in the next episode - will give your YP the blueprint they need to take control over their emotions. And BONUS - you’ll now know how to support and coach them into using the system when they experience anxiety.

Got a question for me? I'd love to answer it!

Get ready for some parenting inspiration and support on today's Thursday Thoughts episode!

As you know, my goal for the podcast is to provide education, inspiration, and support for all you Modern Parents out there (and...YES!...you are a Modern Parent if you are raising wonderful young people in today's modern world!).

My Sunday episodes are primarily used to provide specific education on a parenting strategy or technique, but my Thursday Thoughts episodes are all about the inspiration and support aspect of the work that I do with you.

On today's episode:

[0:00] Hello and a tidbit about my parenting

[4:25] I review the report just released by the American Psychological Association (APA) that outlines 7 important recommendations to help parents raise young people with a healthy relationship with social media

[15:32] I answer a listener's question about teens and online romantic relationships

[21:42] I answer a listener's question about how to create a smart summertime schedule when the parents work outside the home (I have a lot of experience with this, as I was a working parent while my kids were young)

[31:57] I let you in on my recent introspection on my own parenting. Because I've been talking about taking time to reflect on how I parented now that both my son and daughter are going through graduations, I received a listener question about what I would do over if I could. I open up and give you a specific instance with my son that I wish I had handled differently.

OK...I hope this episode gives you the inspiration, validation, and support you need to be the best parent possible for your young person AND so that you feel like you are (mostly) doing this parenting thing right :)

Got a question for me? I'd love to answer it!

So last week I gave you strategies to help you create a great summer for your young person...but this week I'm giving you strategies to help YOU have a great summer.

Yes! YOU MATTER TOO!

My goal for this episode is to give you practical strategies to help you stay sane this summer - I don't want you counting down the weeks...days...hours...until it's time to send your young person off to school again. To do that,I go over 6 common misconceptions that I hear from parents every summer, and I address these misconceptions with strategies that will allow you to enjoy every minute of your summer with your family.

I've found that parents experience unwanted frustration when their expectations for summer vacation don't match up with the reality of it. This can lead to disappointment and annoyance - as well as missed opportunities to create lasting memories and strengthen family relationships.

In today's episode, you'll discover:

[0.00] A personal story about how I used the strategies discussed on my podcast to nurture and guide my own son and daughter

[10:47] The main reason behind summer burnout for parents

[15:09] Common Misconception #1: Your young person will independently choose to spend their time on worthwhile activities instead of screens

[19:54] Common misconception #2: Your young person will be so happy and stress-free during the summer that they’ll behave and not have any meltdowns, teenage tantrums, or any other annoying moody episodes.

[25:40] Common Misconception #3: Your young person will be so happy that it’s summertime that they’ll never get bored.

[31:45] Common Misconception #4: You have to spend ALL your free time being with your young person, entertaining them, or ensuring they have the perfect summer

[34:41] Common Misconception #5: Summer is a waste of time for your young person - they become lazy slobs and forget everything they learned over the school year.

[38:53] Common Misconception #6: Your summertime is characterized by stress, tension, and arguments between you and your young person

Why am I talking about Summer Break when it’s only May?

Because you’ve GOT to take advantage of Summer Break to not only fight the traditional summer slump (you know…the sudden yearly disappearance of all that your young person learned over the past school year) but you’ve also got to address the Pandemic Backslide too.

What is the Pandemic Backslide?

Recent research examining the impact of the pandemic on young people reveals that it has set them back by ALMOST A YEAR!

Through my interactions with parents over the last year, I’ve discovered that they are primarily concerned about three things:

  • First, they worry that their young person’s learning and grades may not be up to par, making life after high school very difficult.
  • Second, they are concerned about their relationship with their young person, which may not be as strong as they would like it to be.
  • Third, they worry that their young person may not have a healthy relationship with themselves, and that’s why we’re seeing a HUGE increase in low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression in adolescents.

Summer provides a special time when families can slow down and focus on each other; that’s why I want to make sure you are planning now to use this summer wisely.

Here is what you’ll learn in this episode:

[1:40] Why Summer Break provides the BEST opportunity to address problem behaviors and improve relationships

[4:21] Why it's important to do a Post-Pandemic Summer Re-Set

[10:18] Focus Area #1: How to improve the parent-child relationship

[20:21] Focus Are #2: How to improve your young person’s peer relationships

[23:34] Focus Area #3: How to improve your young person’s confidence and self-esteem (HINT: it involves their natural passions, talents, and abilities)

[30:31] Focus Area #4: Create smart routines and habits that set your young person up for a lifetime of success.

Today's episode title might make your anxiety spike, as I'm sure you're already thinking, "As a parent, I need to ensure my young person is educated, I need to teach them to be kind and moral people, AND I have to help them develop their natural talents and interests...and now I also need to add growing their sense or purpose to the list? I can't do it all!"

But I'm here to tell you that without focusing on your young person's sense of purpose, then everything else you attempt to teach them will all be for nothing.

Why?

Because without a sense of purpose, all the good things you attempt to teach your young person will not get absorbed.

A sense of purpose gives your young person an understanding of how they fit into their family unit, their peer group, and into the larger world around them. Your young person has to know that they play a valuable role in those three areas in order to use their natural talents and abilities successfully AND to build warm and positive relationships with those around them.

This episode is for you if your young person struggles with the following:

  • Lack of motivation
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Low self-esteem
  • Poor friendships
  • Living a "shallow life" (i.e., just interested in social media, Youtube, or video games).

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • [5:57] Why a lack of a sense of purpose is so destructive for your young person
  • [6:28] How developing a sense of purpose creates a domino effect of other positive changes for your young person
  • [8:37] The definition of the domino effect
  • [12:02] Why taking the time to develop your young person's sense of purpose is so important
  • [17:31] My six tips on how to use daily interactions with your young person to help develop their sense of purpose
  • [31:30] Putting it all together with an example.

If I could wave a magic wand and improve just ONE thing for many of the young people that I help at my office, I would transform their negative and limiting mindsets into positive and empowering ones.

This episode was inspired by some of the recent work that I've been implementing into the sessions with teens in my office. I can't tell you enough how focusing on changing the mindsets of many of my young patients has really improved their mental health, connections with family and friends, and made their self-esteem skyrocket.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • [8:22] What mindset is and how it relates to your young person
  • [9:15] How mindset influences your young person's emotions and behaviors (and if you want to change your young person's emotions or behaviors you have to START with their mindset)
  • [11:00] The two categories of mindset: positive and empowering mindsets or negative and limiting mindsets
  • [16:11] The importance of still highlighting some classic mindsets that continue to be important for raising great young people
  • [17:15] Three NEW mindsets that I believe every Modern Parent needs to be teaching their young people: 1) being uncomfortable is temporary, 2) everything is figureoutable, and 3) challenges are not your identity; your accomplishments are.
  • [34:09] Five negative mindsets to avoid
  • [39:02] Are YOU modeling a positive or negative mindset to your young person? Be accountable!

As always, I give you lots of real-world examples as I teach the concept of mindset.

If your young person is struggling with their grades or other academic responsibilities - and they only have WEEKS left in the semester before going on Christmas Break - then this episode is a MUST LISTEN!

This episode was inspired by the real-world issues going on with the young people at the Modern Parenting Solutions office this week. The other therapists and I have been busy helping young people who are very stressed out right now, but need to finish the semester in a positive note.

In this episode, I give you the same strategies that we have been recommending to all of our MPS families.

And as always...the strategies that I discuss in this episode are meant to help your child succeed AND to help you build (or maintain) a close and positive parent-child relationship.

Here's a glance at this episode...

  • [3:12] Quick discussion of new research showing how weekly piano lessons lead to better cognitive ability AND lower rates of depression. anxiety, and stress
  • [5:40] Quick discussion of new research confirming what most of us know already - that young people coming out of the pandemic are struggling due to lack of in-person socialization
  • [8:49] Four strategies to do BEFORE the semester ends (even if you only have a week or two left!)
  • [16:05] How to build or maintain your relationship with your child during this emotional and stressful time
  • [18:36] The parenting mindset YOU need to make these last few weeks successful and less emotional (for you and your child)
  • [22:53] What to do AFTER the semester is over so that you set your young person up for a successful NEXT semester
  • [27:25] Two important life lessons to make sure your child learns during this time.

Thursday Thoughts episodes are designed to inspire you to think differently about your parenting journey...to inspire you to keep going or to try new things...and to provide YOU with the support you need to enjoy your parenting journey!

Today's episode is based on a listener question.

This parent listened to Episode 28 about parental overwhelm and wanted some more real-world examples of using the strategies. And...I keep getting emails from parents wanting to know more about me and my parenting journey, so this episode combines these two requests.

In this episode:

  • I give you a little bit more about my background as a parent
  • I share how I finally came to the conclusion that I didn't deserve to live an overwhelmed life
  • I explain what tasks I outsource...and what things I don't
  • I detail how I used the constraints in my life to make me a better parent
  • I describe several seasons of my life and how I git through them into better times
  • I share my love of priorities and boundaries - and how these elements allowed me to tackle my parenting overwhelm once and for all!

My hope is for you to gain encouragement and inspiration from hearing a few examples from my life to tackle those areas of your life that contribute to overwhelm.

Here's the truth: you don't have to be overwhelmed with life!

In the past, I'd let overwhelm rob me of enjoying time with my kids because, instead, I would spend my time attending to my overwhelm instead of being in the moment with my kids. It also caused me to feel "stuck" in my life: with my business, my career, and with so many important relationships. This is because I had so many (and often competing!) thoughts about something that I felt paralyzed to make a decision or to move forward in an area of my life.

In this episode:

  • I’m going to first teach you why tackling your personal overwhelm demon benefits both you and your child
  • Then I’m going to open your eyes to the four important areas that you should be focusing on so that overwhelm doesn’t come calling
  • Then, finally, I’m going to give you 5 great strategies to use to keep overwhelm from taking over your life once and for all.

Ok. Are you ready to end your uncomfortable feeling of overwhelm? Then let’s get started.

Today’s episode is on the topic of co-parenting.

I work with divorced, separated, or never-married parents all the time at Modern Parenting Solutions and I know that the co-parenting relationship can be a tricky one.

Some co-parents find a way to work well together, while others have to figure out how to parent with a contentious and difficult ex. That’s why I say that co-parenting is a journey and that every co-parent’s journey is different.

I’m also a co-parent myself. My ex-husband and I divorced when my kids were 10 and 7 years old, and today they are 24 and 21, and I think that my ex-husband and I did a pretty good job of peacefully co-parenting our kids. Now, don’t get me wrong, there were a lot of ups and downs during our co-parenting journey, but for the most part, I believe that we were pretty successful co-parents. I used my Modern Parenting philosophy during my co-parenting journey which included:

  • Prioritizing respectful relationships,
  • Focusing on helping the kids discover and grow their natural talents and abilities, and
  • Respecting my need to grow as an individual and to be happy (because I matter too!)..

Because of all this experience with co-parenting, I’ve put all my Modern Parenting strategies in my court-approved online co-parenting class. Many parents are court-mandated or advised by their family law attorney to take a co-parenting class as part of their custody plan, so I decided to create my own co-parenting class to meet this need. Now, there are quite a few co-parenting classes available online, but I wanted mine to be different in the sense that I wanted to address the topics and questions that I get from co-parents all the time when I work with them at MPS.

Questions like:

  • How do I parent with a narcissistic or uncooperative ex?
  • How do I discipline my kids if their other parent doesn’t have any discipline at their home?
  • How do I repair my relationship with my child if it has become broken?
  • How do I communicate to my ex and to my kids when I don’t feel like they respect me or care about what I have to say?
  • And most importantly – how do I move on from an emotional breakup? How do I use this experience to become a better version of ME so I can enjoy life again?

I answer all these questions and more in my online court-approved co-parenting class. You can find out more information about the class by going to ModernParenitngSolutions.org/onlinecoparentingclass.

To give you an idea of what my online co-parenting course is like, and to start you on your co-parenting journey, today’s episode is one of the lessons in my online co-parenting course. It’s the lesson on the common stages of co-parenting.

I want you to get 3 things out of the episode today:

  1. I want you to understand the common stages of the co-parenting journey,
  2. I want you to be able to identify where YOU are on the co-parenting journey, and
  3. I want you to feel confident and hopeful that if you are struggling in your co-parenting journey right now, that you CAN get to a stage in the co-parenting journey that provides you with peace, a good relationship with your child, and a great relationship with yourself too.

Ok. Let’s dive into the lesson now.

The goal of the Modern Parenting Solutions podcast is to provide education, inspiration, and support for parents wherever they are on their parenting journey.

My Sunday episodes provide detailed education on specific topics, while my Thursday episodes provide the inspiration and support to implement the tips and strategies from the Sunday episodes.

In today's Thursday Thoughts episode, I provide a discussion that is meant to inspire YOU to think about YOUR definition of what it means to be a successful parent.

Everyone has a different definition of what it means to be a successful parent...AND THAT'S OK!

I also share the story of my parenting journey as an example of how I used my personal Passions, Values, and Beliefs (PVBs) to guide my parenting decisions. My definition

I hope that today's episode inspires you to develop your own definition of successful parenting in a way that influences you to be proud of the way you parent AND allows you to be the parent your child needs you to be!

This episode is inspired by the families at the MPS office in Southern California because topic of sleep gets addressed there a lot.

The other therapists and I address the topic of sleep in most all of our patient cases because it’s such a wide-spread problem for young kids, tweens, teens, and young adults.

If your young person is experiencing problems with sleep, then my goal for today’s episode is for you to understand WHY your child is struggling in this area and to give you the parenting TOOLS needed to get their poor sleep habits turned around.

In this episode, I go over:

  • The dangers of not getting enough sleep
  • 7 Common reasons why kids develop sleep problems
  • How much sleep each age group of young people should be getting
  • The 8 strategies that work to get young kids and teens to develop better sleeping habits.

Oh, man...I know that feeling of wanting to give up.

At The MPS office in Redlands, California, I've talked to several parents over the past few weeks who have expressed to me that they feel so discouraged when they see little change in their child or teen's behavior - even though they've been putting in so much effort!

I totally get it, and I want to give YOU the same advice that I gave to these parents. This advice seemed to resonate with them because they expressed to me that this was the exact advice they needed to hear right now.

As parents, WE NEED SUPPORT AND VALIDATION TOO - and that is the goal of this episode.

You're doing a great job, Modern Parent - just don't give up yet :)

There's nothing worse than seeing a young person struggle with anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem.

Over the many years of working with young people at the Modern Parenting Solutions office, I've found that the one thing that holds young people back from having a better life is their mindset.

Fortunately, though, parents can have a big impact on changing their young person's negative thinking bias, and today's episode is going to show you how to work with your child or teen at home to help them kick the bad habit of the negative thinking bias and to adopt a more positive and helpful outlook.

In this episode, you will:

  • Learn exactly what a negative thinking bias is and how to identify if your child or teen qualifies for this
  • Discover the 3 reasons why some young people default to negative thinking while others don't
  • Understand why positive thinking isn't lying to yourself (this is a popular misconception I hear from kids and parents all the time!!)
  • Take away the 4-step strategy to change your child's negative and unhelpful thinking into positive, realistic, and empowering thoughts
  • Feel confident that you can use this strategy to improve your child or teen's emotions and behavior after listening to this episode!

This parenting strategy isn’t easy – and it takes some time to become a new habit – but it’s well worth it in the end.

When young people master the ability to change their uncomfortable emotions into tolerable ones, identify healthy and effective solutions to problems, and focus on the fact that THEY are in control of their emotions and behaviors, then they’ll mature into happy and successful young adults.

My Thursday thoughts episodes are very short episodes that address trends, research, or just Modern Parenting topics that come up during the week at MPS that I think would be valuable information to share.

In this episode, I discuss:

Trends: The other therapists and I are getting a lot of middle schoolers and high schoolers in the office complaining about being exhausted from the demands of academic work and extracurriculars.

We're surprised that this seems to be happening earlier in the year - usually, this happens closer to the Christmas holiday, so we're concerned that some of our young people aren't coping well with getting back into the groove of in-person school.

If your child is struggling already this year, I give you some good advice on how to handle this situation.

Research: Two new studies have come out in the last couple of months that provide insight into how taking short breaks from social media can dramatically improve a young person's mental health.

Listen to the episode to gain tips and inspiration about how to schedule short breaks from tech in order to build a better relationship with your child or teen AND how to use this break to improve your young person's mental health.

What is The Tech Monster? It's that invisible enemy whose overarching goal is to steal your child or teen's most valuable internal assets: their motivation, energy, self-esteem, and interesting personalities.

And it does all of this by sucking your child in through its irresistible tech influences.

In today's episode, you'll learn all about the three areas where tech is doing the most damage - and you've probably haven't thought about these areas before!

The topic in today's episode draws from my many years of experience when working with young people in my office, as well as my personal experience with my own two kids.

Motivating young people is a tricky - but achievable - task!

This is the first of three episodes focusing on young people and motivation!

The topic of young people and motivation is a big one, which is why this is the first out of 3 episodes devoted to the strategies needed to improve your child’s “motivation muscle”.

As adults, if we want to get motivated to do something like exercise more, eat less sugar, or write that novel that we always talk about, we do the internal work needed to start the motivation process. HOWEVER…the problem with motivating young people is that, as parents, we have no control over this internal process! Most of the time, our kids don’t even WANT to be motivated!

So what can we do? Especially when we KNOW our kids have such POTENTIAL for great things…but they just don’t seem to care?

I’ve been teaching parents how to improve their young person’s “motivation muscle” for years now, and in my experience, this is a 3-step process:

STEP 1: Create the right mindset for motivation to begin

STEP 2: Create the right structure for motivation to continue to come back

STEP 3: Create the right context to supercharge motivation when it hits!

This episode dives into the motivation mindset. You’ll learn about these 5 important mindset shifts:

  • Positive vs. negative mindset
  • Delayed gratification vs. Immediate gratification mindset
  • Abundance vs. scarcity mindset
  • Smart Risks vs. “play it safe” mindset
  • Effort vs. manifesting mindset

In this episode, I give you specific tips and strategies on how to build or repair your relationship with your child or teen over the summer (or what’s left of the summer).

In this previous episode, I go over basic parent-child communication strategies that I recommend to all parents working on their relationship, but this episode focuses solely on using the summer to connect with your child.

Once you finish listening to this episode, you'll feel a renewed sense of confidence and hope because now you'll have a game plan on how to work on a strained relationship with your child.

I've seen so many of the families that I work with turn around challenging parent-child relationships when they put the effort into it - and I share some real-world examples from my patients in this episode too!

Start listening now, and then put these strategies into use so that you can start creating a closer and warmer relationship with your child or teen.

Enjoy your summer by using a Modern Parenting technique that will turn a grumpy and bored kid (or teen!) into someone who is a joy to be around! Summertime means no homework…no rules…and no bedtime. Right?

Wrong!

A consistent summertime sleep/wake routine gives your child or teen the cognitive energy to:

  • Better manage their emotions
  • Better manage their behavior (even those toddler tantrums and older kid anger outbursts)
  • Remember facts and memories
  • Move more and eat healthier
  • Maintain better relationships with friends and family members.

There are so many benefits for kids and teens to go to bed and to wake up at a set time each day in the summer…but I know it’s easier said than done!

That’s why I give you all the tools you’ll need to create a consistent sleep/wake routine for your unique family.

In this episode:

  • I give you the reasons WHY a summertime sleep/wake routine is important so that you can have an effective conversation with your child or teen about it
  • I walk you through 5 steps on how to create a summertime sleep/wake routine that will work for YOUR unique family
  • I point out where many parents go wrong when trying to implement a sleep/wake routine – so YOU don’t make these same mistakes too!

No matter when you start your summertime sleep/wake routine, you’ll see the benefits in no time at all! Listen to this podcast today and get started bringing peace and FUN to your summer with your family.

I believe that today's hot hiring market provides the perfect opportunity for teens to not only avoid the summertime slump (you know, that weird time where teens sleep all day and stay up all night on screens and you never see them for the fun family stuff!) but to really increase their self-esteem, confidence, and maturity too. I want to share with you the reasons why it’s so important for your teen to get a job this summer and how to encourage them to get that job if they appear to be a little unwilling.

But the important thing is that you have to start NOW. I can't bold and underline that sentiment enough!!!

If you wait for summer to get here, then all the good jobs will be taken and all that opportunity for personal growth will be gone with it.

Tune in to this episode today to gain the tools you need to talk to your teen about getting a summer job, how to encourage a resistant teen to get a job, and how to reinforce the life lessons they'll learn while on the job.

Parenting outside of the traditional family is often seen as a negative thing, but it doesn't necessarily have to be. As a child psychologist who has worked with families of all different kinds, I can tell you with great certainty that it's not WHAT your family looks like; it’s HOW you parent that makes all the difference.

I've also parented within a non-traditional family structure, and my kids - who are young adults now - are AMAZING people. Our family is PROOF that non-traditional parenting can be functional.

And what do I mean by functional? In my experience, the goal of most families is to create an environment that is positive and supportive where everyone in the family feels free to pursue their natural talents and interests.

When you’re done listening to this episode, you'll feel encouraged knowing that non-traditional families can be just as functional as traditional ones.

I'll talk about what being a non-traditional family means, why it isn't a negative thing, and the habits that need to be present for any family to work.

  • My 5 best practices that all Modern Parents should adopt in order to teach their kids how to use social media safely and wisely.
  • The answers to the top questions that I get from my private practice clients about kids and social media.

Also...in order to set you up for success in creating a social media strategy for your household, I've created a social media contract between parent and child that can be used as a tool to communicate your family's guidelines about social media use.

Today’s episode continues the topic of kids and technology by diving into the topic of kids and video games. I’ll provide the 6 best practices that I advise all Modern Parents to adopt when allowing their child or teen to play video games.

In addition, I’ve compiled the top questions that I get from my private practice clients and answer those in this podcast episode.

In order to set you up for success, I’ve created a free parenting resource called “The Contract Between Parent & Child: Gaming”.

Set your child or teen up for success by teaching them to use smartphones safely and wisely. In today's episode, I do a deep dive into the topic of kids and smartphones.

Last episode, I talked in general terms about the pros and cons of kids and tech devices – including educating you on the reason why kids get addicted to tech devices and what you can do about it – but this episode is going to really provide knowledge on the best practices for safe and healthy smartphones use.

    • How can I help my child to have a life outside of their smartphone?

      • How do I set limits with the smartphone?

I've also created an updated contract between parent and child for the smartphone. You can get that free resource by clicking here: https://www.modernparentingsolutions.org/episode5/

What is the #1 concern for most Modern Parents? How to effectively discipline their child or teen.

Most Modern Parents want a discipline strategy that:

  • Improves their child’s behavior,
  • Teaches their child an important life lesson that they’ll use for the rest of their lives,
  • And, most importantly, they don’t want disciplining their child to lead to a break down in the parent-child relationship.

If you share these same concerns, then this is definitely the episode for you!

Before listening to this episode, download the free PDF workbook that I’ve created for you that takes you step-by-step through everything that I talk about in the episode today (click HERE to get the workbook). By listening to this episode AND completing the free workbook, you will be able to create a behavior plan that works for you individual family.

Disciplining a child at any age – from toddler to teenager – is always going to be difficult. You just can’t get around the fact that this is not a fun part of parenting - but you CAN make discipline effective.

Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll learn in this episode:

  • [00:40] Family rituals are easy to create and serve to create a strong parent-child bond.
  • [03:50] Learn what a behavior plan is and why it should replace your current discipline strategy.
  • [06:00] I explain the 3 elements that every successful behavior plan must contain, and I break those elements down in detail so that you know everything you need to create your own successful behavior plan.
  • [18:00] Now that you know everything that is involved in creating a behavior plan, I give you the 3 reasons why it works so well in changing the behavior of modern kids.
  • [21:20] I want YOUR behavior plan to be a success, so I also share with you several ways that I’ve seen some of my clients fail with a behavior plan – and they didn’t have to fail!

You’re going to get some really great information in today’s episode - and don't forget to download the free workbook so you can get started creating your child's behavior plan right away.

| There’s one important factor that will make or break a successful Modern Parent, and it has nothing to do with consequences/punishments, communication, or even quality of involvement between parent and child. One of the biggest predictors I’ve found of parenting success is how confident a parent is with their parenting decisions. I’m not talking about the false bravado felt when giving a child a consequence with the attitude of “Because I’m the parent and I say so,” but the feeling of actual confidence that comes upon a parent when they base their decisions on a framework that is based on their unique passions, values, and interests. On today’s episode, I’ll teach you all about creating a parenting framework on which you’ll base all of your parenting decisions. No more wondering what to do when your child misbehaves or pushes the boundaries in your house – now you’ll know exactly how to address even the most emotional situations when they come up. When using a framework (based upon the 3 important factors that I discuss in depth in today’s episode) to guide your parenting decisions, you’ll never feel that uncomfortable feeling of doubt in the pit of your stomach ever again. This Modern Parenting strategy has been a game-changer for myself and for so many of the other parents that I work with, and I believe that it is a cornerstone of all other parenting techniques. That’s why today’s episode is the first part of a five-part Modern Parenting 101 series. Be sure to download the PDF workbook that goes along with today's episode in order to fully implement all the information provided for you. So much goodness is packed into this episode and I can’t wait for you to tune in. |
