In case you're new here, we wanted to kick off Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month with a retelling of Mary's perspective following Alex's cancer diagnosis.

During Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month (GCAM), visit foundationforwomenscancer.org (link in bio) for information about gynecologic cancer symptoms and treatment, risk and prevention, clinical trials and survivor stories. Gynecologic oncologists are medical doctors with specialized training in treating gynecologic cancers. If cervical, ovarian, uterine/endometrial cancer, vaginal, or vulvar cancer is suspected or diagnosed, seek care from a gynecologic oncologist.

The Foundation for Women’s Cancer (FWC) offers free, downloadable educational materials, many of them available in three languages: English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. These guides can help you learn about the five gynecologic cancers and related topics such as postoperative pain management, financial resources for cancer patients, survivorship and more.

The Blame Game

This week, Alex and Mary discuss the harmful effects of patient blaming, when a medical professional, friends, family, or self-help authors infer, suggest, or outright say something akin to, “If you had a better attitude, you could beat cancer” or “Maybe if you had lost weight, you wouldn’t have gotten diabetes” or “You should have gone to the doctor sooner, before you got cancer.” Their discussion was inspired by Kate Bowler’s journey through colon cancer, after having been diagnosed at the age of 35. Why does patient blaming exist and what can we do about it?

This week Alex and Mary discuss feminine hygiene and the conflict between Science and big corporations. The medical community, in particular those who deal with the female anatomy, recommend basic good hygiene in taking care of our bodies. However, big corporations have launched numerous marketing campaigns, targeting teens and preteens, planting the seed in their growing minds that their bodies should smell like flowers or fruit and, thereby, making them believe the very natural act of menstruation to be dirty or nasty. All this to make a dollar. Doctors tell us using such products is not necessary and may even prove to be harmful to our bodies.

They have learned developing a mindset that accepts change, prioritizes actions, and understands how to move forward can help guide their reactions to change, presenting as more of a ripple, rather than a tidal wave.
