We are back! Finally. It has been far too long.
Today, we brought on Seerut Chawla. Seerut was originally coming on as a "Right to Reply" from our previous episode that we did on her account. However, after discussing for quite some time before recording, we realized we all wanted to focus on talking about Instagram Therapy, and what a mess it has made. There is so, so much more to talk about with Instagram Therapy. Seerut and I are hoping to do another episode in the near future to discuss things more specifically, with examples, but that's all for now, folks. I hope you enjoy today's episode!

Full Instagram-Therapy Checklist PDF:
http://sumoflife.org/portfolio/
Ever wonder why you don't actually feel better after sharing that post that was supposed to make you and others feel good? Ever self-diagnose yourself into having Anxiety or Depression? Did you ever stop to think that maybe you don't have to call all your bad experiences "traumatic"?
If any of this sounds familiar to you, then I'm sorry, but you've probably found yourself in the realm of Insta-Therapy accounts. They've welcomed you into the world of short-term feel-good posts, self-diagnosing, and the constant bombardment of advertising. It really is too bad that they couldn't help you in the long term.
But wait... what's that? Omg, a podcast episode that outlines things to look out for when following these accounts??? A miracle!
Obviously, the above sentences are meant to be in jest, but these accounts really do frustrate me. I'm here to offer a different approach to mental health and the mental health community. We need to stop filling our minds with short-term feel-good & relatable posts and actually try to understand what will make us feel better in the long run.
I offer one thing to move closer to that goal: an Instagram-Therapy Checklist. With this checklist, I hope to help people recognize why Insta-Therapy accounts might actually be making mental health conditions worse. What's that old saying? The road to hell is paved with good intentions? Yeah, I think that's it. Although, I'm not sure of all of these accounts acting out in good intentions...
Anyways, this is the beginning of the journey, folks! Follow me along this path of debunking and exposing Insta-Therapy accounts if you're interested!

In this episode, I talk about how some safe spaces are good and how some safe spaces are not only bad but really bad for people with anxiety disorders. I going to leave a full quote below of the quote I read in the episode. I hope people find this useful for navigating anxiety and difficult issues. Lastly, I hope you enjoy:)
Full quote from Van Jones:
“There are two ideas about safe spaces: One is a very good idea and one is a terrible idea. The idea of being physically safe on a campus — not being subjected to sexual harassment and physical abuse, or being targeted specifically, personally, for some kind of hate speech — “you are an n-word,” or whatever — I am perfectly fine with that.
But there’s another view that is now I think ascendant, which I think is just a horrible view, which is that “I need to be safe ideologically. I need to be safe emotionally I just need to feel good all the time, and if someone says something that I don’t like, that’s a problem for everybody else including the administration.”

Anxiety can of course be natural (which I'm sure most people probably have experienced), but it can most certainly be a disorder as well. Anxiety can be debilitating, and stating claims that it can only be natural only regresses our knowledge about anxiety and mental health, generally speaking.

In this episode, I just wanted to express how non-important it may seem to be Googling every little worry you have, but it is actually so important that we try and not do this either so much, or at all. Not Googling your worries, fears, and anxieties will probably quell your anxious thoughts tremendously. We give out brain inputs, and it gives out similar outputs. Don't give your brain more things to worry about; this will only fuel anxiety.

In this episode (the Season 2 Finale), I tried something different. I wrote a 4 page essay about a topic I'm really passionate about, and I hope it comes across as useful. I really enjoyed writing this piece and recording it as well. This season has been a blast, and I'm so happy with the return of feedback and support that this podcast is getting. I can't wait to share Season 3 with you. I hope you enjoy:)

In this episode, I discuss how anxiety can mimic nearly every illness or sickness imaginable. I experience the mimicing feeling on a daily basis, but it always comes down to being one thing in the end: just anxiety. It's important to know that anxiety can do this, because once we know this, we can predict anxiety's next move.

Well, I really think we need to stop making certain posts about mental health look so appealing. I believe some people want to annouce that they have mental health issues in order to release them from the FOMO because mental health is now apparently trendy. It's one thing to list off the many mental health disorders that you have (which I'm sure is awful and terrible to deal with, if you do in fact have those issues), but what are you doing about it, and how are you helping others? Do not just list off your disorders in order to gain sympathy points. I think we miss the mark when we do this. We should be listing off our problems and citing our experiences with them, i.e., what makes us feel better or worse, and what is hard but helps us in the long term, or vice versa? Let's talk about what works for us and possibly for others so that we can rid ourselves of much of our suffering. Let's not make having a mental health disorder cool, because it is far from that.

Disclaimer Johns Hopkins has Regulatory Approval and is allowed to conduct these clinical setting experiences with the use of these compunds. Psychedelics still remain Schedule 1 Drugs in the United States, i.e., they are illegal. This podcast is not advocating for the use or distribution on these drugs, and this podcast is not advice for these compounds. Again, we are not telling you to use these psychedelic substances. This is merely a conversation.
In this episode, Dr. Sandeep Nayak joined me to discuss the possible benefits of the use of psychedelics in a clinical setting. Dr. Nayak works at the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic & Consciousness Research, he completed his MD at Brown University, his residency at Johns Hopkins, and is also currently a psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
We discussed the possible treatments for addiction, depression, and other mental health disorders/illnesses. We also breifly touched on cannabis (weed) and THC. These questions were sort of all over the place; I just had many questions out of my fascination on this topic. But of course, I think all of them were very interesting. I loved this conversation and I hope to have another one with Dr. Nayak in the future! I hope you enjoy:)

In today's episode, I disucss the importance of not always needing to be happy all the time. For one, because it is utterly unrealistic. Secondly, we are humans, and humans are meant to experience a range of emotions; some indeed may be abnormal and be classifed as a certain mental health disorder, but sometimes it is just experiencing a normal set of emotions.
I want to stress the importance of you speaking with your doctor, psychiatrist, therapist, or all three before thinking of coming off medication; do not take this episode as advice or motivation to do so. If you feel you are ready, discuss it with your prescriber, and others, if necessary. This is my own experience, thoughts, and opinions on medication from my own research and analysis.
Lastly, I hope you enjoy:)

Today's episode discusses the effects that caffeine can have on anxiety, and actually vice versa, depending on the viewpoint given to you from your anxious thoughts.
Caffeine is the most consumed psychoactive drug in the world and in America. Unlike what some people will say, caffeine can actually increase anxiety because it is a CNS (central nervous system) stimulant, which means it can increase alertness, thoughts, sensations, etc. However, I do believe the power to handle caffeine falls in your hands, and you can do it. Just take it slow if you enjoy it. Don't feed into your anxiety telling you that you will feel anxious, because with time, you can overcome those feelings.
Lastly, as always, I hope you enjoy:)

In this episode of Deep Dive, I discuss Zoloft, the most commonly used antidepressant in the US, with over 38 million prescriptions per year (probably more now). Two things I forgot to mention in the episode is that Zoloft can be used for a relatively long period of time, from a couple years to even one's whole life. Most times it is best to see if it has helped you after 6-12 months, then you may want to consider coming off the medication. But of course discuss this with your doctor. The second thing was that Zoloft reaches peak plasma at around 4.5-8.4 hours. This means that during this time period after dosing, you should notice the effects the most.

The longest episode I have done to date. Everything mentioned here is important, wild, and unbelievable, to say the least.
If you're in school right now, just know that school ends, and the "authority" that is possibly deterring you from succeeding, living comfortably, or punishing you unfairly, that all ends too. It may not be the case that your school is unfair in any way, but I believe some portion of schools are, as is the one the 5 of us attended.
Each school also has good actors and bad actors. To say in other terms, faculty that will be supportive and faculty that will be neglectful. Once you understand who those people are, life becomes a lot easier, and it makes you realize what you should be focusing your time on.
Lastly, I hope you enjoy:)

In today's episode, I discuss some of the reasons associated with why rationalizing doesn't work immediatley during a panic attack. Like most things, once you're in the midst of a panic attack, one of the only ways to let it come down naturally, is to not react to it, and let the short half-life of adrenaline work in your favor towards ultimately feeling better.

This is a really atypical episode. I made this suddenly after the events that unfolded earlier today. I was removed from a private anxiety Facebook group for posting too much about the negative effects of meditation; mostly in the comment sections of posts regarding meditation. I understand the general theme of the group is to help each other get over fear, however, I cannot stress the importance of the negative effects of meditation as being someone myself who suffered from such severe consequences.
The name of the group and podcast is called The Anxious Truth. It is not run by professionals of psychology, therapy, etc. but nor is this podcast. I just wish that they would mention that they are not giving professional advice, because it makes me concerned that people are telling each other what to do in an unsupervised group (unsupervised in terms of not monitored by professional psychologists or therapists). And that is precisely the reason I start out all the episodes the way in which I do, so people are informed that I am not a professional. Just be wary of where you are getting your information from, even in terms of this podcast, because it may make things worse.

In this episode, Clinical Psychologist and Neuroscientist, Dr. Willoughby Britton joined me to discuss the adverse effects of meditation. I hope this conversation opens some eyes on the negative side of meditation. The way in which meditation is advertised and glorified in our current American Culture is truly concering. I, myself, am a sufferer from an app-based mindfulness-related meditation practice, after having only practiced for 10-20 mintues a day for only one year.
I hope you learn as much today as I did when I first spoke to Willoughby back in March; and maybe you'll find some help and support following this conversation. And as always, I hope you enjoy:)

Screen time is not something us humans have been doing for a long time. With that being said, we really do not have a clear understanding of what technology is doing for us, either beneficially or adversely. This was extremely interesting to me given the fact that they are so closely related. This episode was filled with a bunch of laughs but we also made a lot of serious points, and brought up some serious topics surrounding therapy and such. Overall, it was a super enjoyable recording and episode to do, and I hope you enjoy:) Teddy's email: teodoroaleo@gmail.com Greg's Email: tgt1238@gmail.com

In this episode, I had Brielle Malanga on the Podcast to discuss her difficulties with anxiety, primarily throughout high school and college. Her struggles were persistent, but through medication, techniques, and more, Brielle is another example of immense progress with anxiety related difficulties. Brielle (like myself) is also going to be a Clinical Psychologist. Although we are not professionals as of now, Brielle and I are more than willing to answer any question we can. Her email (as said at the end of the episode) is: briellemalanga@gmail.com. You can also contact her on Instagram. I hope you enjoy:)

This episode was very hard to make, to say the least. Here, I disucss the general overlay of my history with Mental Illnesses (Anxiety & Depression). Again, this is just a general discussion of my own experiences, but if you have any specific questions on parts of my experiences, please contact me at liamscully@sumoflife.org. I would be more than willing to share anything that I can offer. I hope this helps normalize your own challenges with Mental Illnesses, and I hope I can be a voice for anyone unwilling to share their experiences. It is comforting to know how normal these experiences are. You're never alone.

Panic attacks are frightening and frustrating. Unfortunatley, we as a species have evolved to experience panic attacks when our brain or body senses some type of danger. Or, lucky for us (lol) when there isn't any danger at all, and our mind is playing tricks on us cough anxiety cough. This technique, called floating, allows us to be non-reactive (not ignoring) during a panic attack. Doing this allows the sensations of panic to quell on its own.
