Pastor William Attaway continues into Acts chapter 6, where the early church encountered a major dispute in its constituents. Discerning that their own calling was to pray and study, the apostles found seven honest men and delegated to them the power and authority to resolve the issue. Pastor Attaway asks all of us both to pray and study regularly and also to seek possible areas of calling.
After the Jewish religious leaders in Jerusalem ordered the apostles to stop teaching in the name of Jesus, they continued instead. Acts chapter 5 tells how they preached and healed despite further threats, imprisonment, and flogging. Pastor William Attaway encourages modern-day Christians to persist in showing and sharing our eternal hope in Christ as well.
Some examples tell us what to do, while others demonstrate what NOT to do. Pastor William Attaway preaches from Acts 4:32-5:11, where Barnabas gives the full results of a property sale to the early church and Ananias and Sapphira claim to do the same. The sober results remind the church of the holiness of God.
In Acts chapter 4, religious authorities told the followers of Jesus they must not preach in His name any more. In response, the early church prayed together for God to give them boldness to continue. He responded immediately, demonstrating His closeness. Pastor William Attaway reminds us all of God’s presence and of His ability to carry through whatever He wants us to do, regardless of opposition.
When confronted by religious authorities in Acts chapter 4, the apostles Peter and John refused their command to stop preaching in the name of Christ. Pastor William Attaway explains that they could not deny the name of Christ, because He is the one true way to salvation.
Pastor William Attaway preaches on the story in Acts 3 of the lame man healed outside the temple by Peter and John. The two apostles took the opportunity to preach to the onlookers about the power of Christ and how He would gladly welcome every one of them into His salvation and into the refreshment of His presence.
We finish chapter 2 of Acts today looking at the 5 practices that characterized the Acts 2 church (and why Southview looks and works like we do).
In the second half of Acts 2, the Apostle Peter preaches to the very Jewish inhabitants of Jerusalem who called for Jesus to be crucified. He powerfully explains how Jesus fulfilled prophecies in the Old Testament and then rose from the dead. His hearers repent in word and deed, and thousands are baptized. Pastor William Attaway, in turn, explains to Southview Community Church how this development of the early stages of God’s church echoes down to us today.
In Acts 2, God sent the Holy Spirit to all individuals waiting and praying the upper room, regardless of gender or socioeconomic status. Pastor William Attaway discusses what this means for us and for the spiritual gifts therefore given since then to every follower of Christ.
When the Holy Spirit came to Jesus’ disciples in Acts chapter 2, they spoke the Gospel in all tongues. Pastor William Attaway explains what this means for God’s church to show unity in diversity.
Continuing through the first chapter of Acts, Pastor William Attaway contrasts the hasty behavior and terrible end of Judas with the forgiveness offered by Jesus to the Apostle Peter. Pastor Attaway reminds the church that God works in His own way and timing, almost never with the “microwave results” that we want.
Pastor William Attaway concludes a three-part miniseries on prayer inside of the longer series on the book of Acts with encouragement to speak honestly in our conversations with God. Just like David in the Psalms, we are free to express to God all emotions in our hearts.
Pastor William Attaway continues through the book of Acts with the second of a three-part miniseries on prayer. The apostles prevailed in prayer during the season between Jesus' ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Pastor William addresses the number one problem many of us have with prayer: our attitudes toward God. In order to converse with Him in a healthy manner, we must approach him humbly, trustingly, gratefully, expectantly, and submissively.
When Jesus ascended to Heaven in the first chapter of Acts, He told His disciples to wait for the coming of the Spirit. This week, Pastor William Attaway believed that he needed to slow his original plan for the series on Acts and focus Southview on three verses of this chapter, verses 12-14, in which the disciples spent their waiting time in prayer. This message, the first of three parts, begins to address some of the difficult questions people have concerning prayer. These questions often revolve around our relationship with Christ, and, ultimately, what kind of God we believe He is.
Pastor William Attaway begins what will be a lengthy series on the Book of Acts with the first 11 verses, which contain the last words Jesus spoke to His apostles before ascending to Heaven. Pastor William unravels, section by section, Jesus' promise to send the Holy Spirit and to return one day HImself, as well as the Church's purpose on earth to spread the truth of Christ.
To complete this year’s Easter series and transition to the upcoming messages about the early Christian Church in Acts, Pastor William Attaway outlines the events in the last chapter of John. Here, Jesus comes to restore the Apostle Peter to relationship with Him and to renew his calling to follow Him, despite Peter’s past failures. In so doing, He sets a model for us.
As the conclusion to this year's Easter series, Pastor William Attaway uses the story of "Doubting Thomas" in John 20:24-31 to encourage members of the church that it is safe to express doubts to Jesus. Just like with the apostle Thomas, Jesus already knows all our doubts and is ready to answer them.
Pastor William Attaway continues the Easter series with Jesus' visit on Sunday night to the apostles in the locked room. Jesus takes fearful people like them and us and reconnects us to Himself by the power of His peace, so that we also can forgive and love others.
Continuing the story of Easter, Pastor William Attaway describes the encounter between Jesus and several of His followers on the road, after His first reappearance to Mary at the tomb. These male followers had not believed Mary because they were still blinded by their dead hopes of who Jesus would be and what He would do for them. Pastor William encourages the church to do what Jesus Himself did and clear away false hopes with words of truth from the Bible.
Pastor William Attaway unfolds from John 20:1-18 the account of Mary Magdalene's meeting the risen Christ for the first time. At first, blinded by the grief of Jesus' recent crucifixion and death, Mary could not see Him standing alive right in front of her. She could not see that God had made a new creation for all of us.
On Palm Sunday two millennia ago, the Jews in Jerusalem celebrated the entrance of Jesus with tremendous jubilation and honor. Pastor William Attaway, just back from sabbatical, explains what they were expecting from Jesus, in contrast to the salvation He was about to bring.
Sometimes God asks us to give up the very thing He promised. Pastor Brad Russell from Dulles Community Church takes us through Genesis 22, the story where God asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, then provides a ram at the last second. Pastor Russell explains how this story is a foreshadowing of God actually sacrificing His own Son, Jesus, for us.

Danny Chung was born in Seoul, Korea but moved to Toronto, Canada where he spent most of his life. He then moved to VA about 13 years ago with his wife Angela and their now two teenage daughters. He is currently serving as the lead pastor of Bridgeway Church that was founded just over 8 years ago.
Visiting pastor Brad Russell from Dulles Community Church goes through Luke 5, encouraging the church to turn their attention to the voice of God. We have a Heavenly Father that will never stop trying to speak love and life into our lives, and Pastor Brad encourages us to lean in and listen.
Visiting pastor Steve Kane speaks from Jeremiah chapter 25, encouraging God's people to listen to His words and follow Him into life's adventures without fear.
Visiting pastor Steve Kane used the metaphor of reading a hard-copy, classic map to encourage individuals and parents to set their eyes on the goals God wants for them and their children and then to trust Him with the process. After the sermon, Southview celebrated a baby dedication.
Leaders of some of Southview Community Church's ministry teams related their personal testimonies of coming to know Jesus Christ as their Savior and their paths to their current positions. Speakers included: Jasmine Latour, Hospitality Team Lead; Jenna Kirkhart, Family Ministry Director; Macy Puryear, Student Ministry Director; and Marshall Kregg, Small Groups Coordinator.

This week, Southview introduced our new group of Elders to the church community and gave them the opportunity to introduce themselves and discuss spiritual gifts. The new elders are: Nadine James, Dan McLuskie, Carl Blackmon, and Megan Kime.
Southview recognizes Elders as men and women who possess gifts of leadership, are giving of themselves in service to the Church, and who are called to serve in this capacity. They are to care about and pray regularly for the spiritual and physical well-being of attendees, our leaders, and our community.

Priscilla Lisa Shi is a gifted storyteller, speaker, prayer minister, Bible study teacher, and missionary. She is passionate about creating moments for people to encounter the living God through prayer in various settings at conferences, by teaching Bible studies, and through teaching and competitive sports. She has an older bunch: her sons, 17-year-old son Jalen; 20-year-old nephew Semisi; and 18-year-old brother Jaden, who are the absolute joy of her life. She and her husband, Jeff, live in South Riding with their younger bunch: Cloe, 2.5 years old; and Zoe, 4 years old.
