“It’s how we use words and how we interact with others that can cause and promote and inspire such change with people just by changing the way I speak, and the way that I listen, and the way that I respond.“

“I think it (SF) just shaped the hope that they felt in many ways, that their patients were doing a lot better than they thought or that their doctors were listening more than they had maybe previously perceived.“

“So best hopes for my research currently (…) is introducing more ways that Solution Focus can change perception.“

Benjamin Finlayson

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Benjamin Finlayson, Ph.D.(c), Solution Focused practitioner, researcher, teacher and Solution Focused champion at Texas Tech University, about

what fascinates him about Solution Focus,

how Sara Smock Jordan influenced him as a teacher,

how he has used Solution Focus in his own transition,

a keynote he gave on wellbeing with a charity organisation,

how they integrate Solution Focus in health care in rural Texas and his experiences being out there as a therapist,

being persistent, being present in a pleasant way, and other success recipes as new SF therapist working in a medical setting with doctors, nurses and patients,

how Solution Focus offered a different way of working and shaped the perspectives and the hope of the people involved,

how Solution Focus makes therapy more approachable and less threatening,

what fascinates Ben with Solution Focus and research and his best hopes for his research,

locus of control or how SF can change the perception of how people view themselves and the ability of doing something different,

what he would like people to take away from our conversation, and

the Challenge of the week: “Find that one conversation, that one situation that you are most hesitant to have and open yourself up into ways that that conversation could be different. How can you listen differently to what they are trying to tell you, and how can you communicate different?”.

“I personally do not give money to people that I encounter. The main reason for that is that it can be dangerous for that person to have money on them. (…) So, it’s not about what somebody might do with it, for me it’s more about their safety.”

“Living on the road as a single young woman, I had to seek out community over and over and over again. (…) I really learned how to reach out to people.”

“Your body will tell you if you are in a safe situation or not in a safe situation. And when you meet somebody new, often times your body will tell you if this is somebody you want in your life or not.”

“I also feel like it’s not for me to say what somebody needs or wants. We are all strong independent people that can speak for ourselves. So, what I do is I open up the trunk of my car and I invite the people that I encounter to help themselves to whatever is in there.”

“Anything that we can do to help another person empower themselves can have longterm beneficial effects to that person.”

Stacy Nelson

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Stacy Nelson, rebel girl and peaceful warrior for humanity, who voluntarily lived on the streets for about 7 years, about

how resourceful it is to have Solution Focused parents,

how it comes that she has a cooler full with supplies for people living on the street,

her journey and her takeaways from living on the streets for about seven years,

how she dumpster dived for food and shared it with other homeless people,

recognizing people living on the streets and engaging with them,

what she offers to people living on the street as harm reduction and her reasons for not giving money,

how she is clear on what she wants to give and where her boundaries are,

what differences having lived on the streets makes for her now,

how she found and built community on the road and how she still seeks out people living on the streets as her community,

how she lets people choose what to take out of her supply box,

valuing and experiencing humanity in everybody,

The Challenge of the week: „Keep protein bars in your glove box (of your car). When you see somebody on the street corner, flying a sign asking for help, give them a protein bar, smile, look them in the eyes and acknowledge them as another human being”.

„I think the Solution Focused approach helps us find even the smallest difference that can make a difference.“

„I am fascinated by that sort of idea of how to use a Solution Focused approach to inform a meaningful life.“

„One of the things I remember from watching Steve and watching Insoo over the years, is the importance of asking these questions in a way that leaves no doubt that you want to know the answer.”

“Solution Focused questions are so simple and many of them are sort of formulaic when you first learn them, and it’s easy to skip over the importance of asking them in a soulful, heartfelt way.“

Yvonne Dolan

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Yvonne Dolan, M.A., founding member of the Institute for Solution-Focused Therapy, internationally acclaimed author, lecturer, trainer, and therapist about

Solution-focused recipes and the role of food in developing Solution Focus,

what fascinates her and has fascinated her with Solution Focus,

how she got in touch with Solution Focus, ended up on the team at the BFTC and started her own SF team in Denver,

her friendships with Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer,

her interest in Solution Focus in everyday life,

the Solution Focused approach to trauma and what we can learn for a meaningful life,

“Oh, this is an Insoo moment (…) What song would we sing that would tell us the miracle was starting to happen? (…) And then I got fascinated with this whole singing question, because I noticed how the room changed.“

“I think the thing that is most important is: You do move from a ‘we’ to a ‘me’. (…) and it’s better when you move from a ‘we’ to a ‘we’. (…) The more sense of tribe people have in coming home, the better off they are.”

“Find something to enjoy and what works, especially what makes you feel good, and that means your body not just your brain.”

Mark Mitchell

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Mark Mitchell, Solution Focused Marriage and Family therapist, coach, and seminar leader about

what has fascinated him with Solution Focus since the 80’s,

what makes Mark so passionate about bringing SF into many different fields,

the miracle question using singing,

including the body, movement and songs in Solution Focus – the questions he asks and the language he uses,

how he notices that these questions might be useful and what he does when they are not,

when to give advice and tell people instead of asking Solution Focused questions,

his work with veterans and active military like the Navy Seals,

scale walk or solution walk and the embodied experiences of participants,

power posing,

how to support the transition period from an active military to a veteran or coming from a „we“ to a „me“,

the importance of tribe and community,

keeping your practice vital, listening and not thinking too much.

The challenge of the week: „Find something to enjoy and what works, especially what makes you feel good.”

„And no matter how difficult the situation is, the person is doing some things that work in his or her life.“

„Some people make decisions all at once, they suddenly know. For other people a decision evolves or ripens.“

„My miracles are funny miracles where things go wrong and you handle it.”

„The strategic Solution Focused approach combines clarifying the problem with elaborating the solution and amplifying what works with interrupting what doesn’t work.”

Ellen Quick, PhD, BCC

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Ellen Quick, PhD, BCC, Clinical psychologist, Solution Focused therapist, life coach, and author about

how we decide on the road,

what fascinates her with Solution Focus,

seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary and how to make these useful details that work visible,

how she came up to write a book about Solution Focus and decision making,

decision making with Solution Focus,

how people know when they know or how decisions ripen,

how she invites people to embrace this ripening process or the ripening scale,

how to use obstacles in a Solution Focused way and focusing on people’s agency,

acknowledging problems and combining strategic work with Solution Focus,

embracing emotions and making a next decision,

her advice to make good decisions,

The Challenge of the week: “When you hit a rough patch or face a lot of stress, just keep going, do those simple things that you already know how to do. Those things that on one level are ordinary and on another level are extraordinary. And you might reflect, imagine it’s tonight, you are looking back on how you handled it, and you are really feeling proud of the good decisions you made: What will you be remembering what you did?”

“When they start watching themselves over and over on the same segment of the tape, they notice those little things that they are doing. And they said this and the client said this and they said this in response.“

“I think the work with microanalysis and the research that we have generated is to more quickly get people to the point where they understand it’s about dialogue, it’s about a conversation, these are the elements or ingredients.“

“Helping them identify those key moments in the session or behavioral changes in the session, I think that takes some training. It takes experience to wach things over and over and to notice, something is different there, something shifted, what happened? And then to look at what immediately preceded that, I think is very helpful in education as well as our training setting.”   Sara Smock Jordan, Ph.D., LMFT

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Sara Smock Jordan, Ph.D., LMFT, Associate Professor, Program Director of Marriage and Family Therapy, and Graduate Coordinator at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas about

what fascinated her about Solution Focus initially and fascinates her today,

what fascinates her with microanalysis of face-to-face dialogue and how she started to work with Janet Bavelas,

how to capture Solution Focus in an observable way,

her research project about positive and negative content choices,

their analysis of the miracle question and her hopes for that research,

teaching Solution Focus and how she lets her students analyze their own work moment by moment with microanalysis of their recorded conversations,

what differences she noticed with her students since she uses microanalysis in her teaching,

the importance of giving feedback of observable behavior,

her learnings when teaching Solution Focus with microanalysis,

how educators could benefit from microanalysis of face-to-face dialogue,

the importance of providing and spreading the evidence for Solution Focus.

The Challenge of the week: Record a conversation about your preferred future and look at it in the future. (See the full details at 32:04)

SFP 43 – Episode 43: Beyond Goals, Beyond Habits: 5 Questions for your Reflections Simply Focus Podcast – Episode #43

Hosted by: Elfie Czerny & Dominik Godat | Intro: Bibiana Czerny & Ken Brooks | Music: www.bensound.com

SFP 43 - Episode 43: Beyond Goals, Beyond Habits: 5 Questions for your Reflections by Elfie Czerny & Dominik Godat | Simply Focus Podcast | 21:05

http://www.sfontour.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/SFP-43-Beyond-Habits-beyond-goals.m4a

“I think it can be fun and a great idea to set goals. And I am even more convinced that it is making a huge difference to reflect on what differences those goals make for you, for others, for your relationships, and things like that, in a way that really shows the picture of a preferred future.”

“What I really love about exploring the preferred future is, that for me, it also invites not to make a plan so much and not to think of creating habits to achieve those goals, but much more to think of fun things to do in order to keep going, fun things to do that energize my preferred future, that give a boost towards my preferred future.”

“To stay curious, to stay open for our own lives, for what is working for us right now, this is something that I feel makes a huge difference. And when I create a habit it often becomes about repeating this habit and it’s not about staying curious anymore.”

Elfie Czerny

“What we realize when we think about our preferred future and about the whole picture, how that might look like, that compared to goals it much more fits to the idea of change is happening all the time. Because a goal is really fix and when the world changes those goals usually stay fix, for a while at least. And with the preferred future it’s so interesting to see what differences we might notice and how this might even change when things change, so it’s a much more fluid picture.”

“The crazy three is a fun way to do, of discovering small next steps or signs of progress. We just come up with 3 little things that we want to do today that hopefully will contribute to our preferred future. That can be very, very small or little bit bigger, just things that you would love to do, maybe crazy things that you want to try out. And just see what happens. And tomorrow you have a new chance for new crazy threes.”

Dominik Godat

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk about

our new voice on our podcast and how we got to know Ken Brooks

what fascinates Elfie with reflections and how she regularly takes the time to reflect in a Solution Focused way

joyful and supportive ways to reflect (y)our past and future life in this ever changing world

different ways of reflecting that fit to different people

beyond goals or the differences between Solution Focused reflections and other reflections

the crazy three – first little steps towards your preferred future

beyond habits or staying curious for our own lives and for what is working for us right now

the importance of interactional aspects in reflections

valuing the past and what worked so far

5 questions for your reflections that we used to reflect our 2018 and 2019:

What would you like to have continue?

What effects, impact, differences do you hope your actions will make in 2019?

Here you might want to consider different areas of life, e.g. wellbeing – joy, ease & happiness – relationships – finances – career – impact you want to make in the world,… and to also further explore your answers to this question with the following questions: Who would notice that? How might they react? What would they see you doing? What would you see them doing? How would you interact differently?

How will you notice in the your everyday life that your preferred future is unfolding?

And how might that be useful for your further progress?

How will you celebrate even your small steps and successes?

With whom will you celebrate? How might this person react to that? What differences might celebrating your success make in your relationship with this person? What differences might celebrating your successes make for your interactions with other people?

The challenge of the week: „Think of your latest reflection(s) – What worked well there? What differences did this reflection make for you and for others? And what of that might be useful in your future?

“When these questions are asked to people, it stops them and they have to think. And then they, in the process of thinking, begin to understand and figure out some answers that they have not come up with before. To me that’s the fascination with Solutions Focus.“

„The way of doing that then, is to create ways of asking questions (…) to encourage conversation and collaboration with each other.” Kat Barclay

„How can we take where you are today and create an entirely new life style that will provide you with the health and well-being that you desire in a way that is actually doable?“

„You see small steps beginning to compound one upon the other and you pretty rapidly reach a point where the momentum of what you are doing continues itself. And you are no longer really working at it as hard, you are just now following a path that is comfortable, doable, and is helping you reach a goal.“  Gary Barclay

“We have enough research that shows it [Solution Focused Brief Therapy] works and it’s been reviewed independently on these national registries […] that now we can confidently say, that this is evidence-based.”

“I always talk about this in terms of learning like a new instrument or a new activity or a new language. It [Solution Focus] is something that requires a lot of practice, concentration and focus. And it takes time to get good at it.”

“And so that aspect of SFBT of trying to recognize the good that they are trying to do and how they are trying to be at their best, I think, is something that I try to bring into my parenting.”

“This approach can instill hope in clients better than, I think, any other therapy model out there.”

Johnny S. Kim, Ph.D., LICSW

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Johnny S. Kim, Ph.D., LICWS, Associate Professor at the University of Denver, and Chair of the SFBTA Research Committee about

what fascinates him with Solution Focus

Evidence-based practice, why it is important for SF to be in the national registries of Evidence-based practices and how they managed to do that

Solution Focus as Evidence-based practice and the difference it makes for practitioners that SF is seen as Evidence-based practice

what he learned from working with these national registries about doing «good» research

the importance of training for good research and research for good training

implementation science and first outcomes for Solution Focused trainings

Solution Focus as a multicultural approach and how his cultural experiences were important for that

The different use of the “miracle” question in Taiwan, Hongkong, Japan, China or South Africa compared to Korea,

The differences Solution Focus makes for him and his wife in their parenting and family life

how SF can instill hope better than any other therapy model and the fit of SF and the Hope(-theory) by Snyder

“What we work with more in systemic work and I believe in Solution Focused work is the process. How are people interacting with each other (…) and what can we do to help them change, so that they get the kind of life that they want. But it’s really all about relationships and interaction.“

“What we can change is the way that you are managing the memories or the way that you are managing interactions.”

„And I really strongly believe that when somebody is solution focused in their orientation to the work there is no such thing about whether or not the question works or doesn’t work. It always works. It’s what we do next. It’s a process. It’s not a question with an answer.”

Dr. Thorana Nelson

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Dr. Thorana Nelson, Professor Emerita of Utah State University about

what fascinates her with Solution Focused Brief Therapy with families

how she came up with the idea of writing a book about SF and families

the interactional view and the paradigm of systems thinking

differences between “systemic theories“ as a coaching or therapy model and “systems thinking“ as a mindset

the difference between deriving interventions from theory and deriving interventions from practice with the client

systems thinking and the fit with Solution Focus or how Solution Focus is very systemic

how she works in a systemic and Solution Focused way

how the different interactions in the therapy room can be used in other situations

the focus on reciprocal interactions or what she would like to see Solution Focused practitioners do more of

how solution focused questions can be used to enrich the work in a more depth way or what she would like to see family therapists do more of

what family therapists can find in her new book „Solution Focused Brief Therapy with families“

the importance of (positive) interactions

The Challenge of the week: Just watch the interactions around you, e.g. when you go Christmas shopping, and observe the different ways people interact with each other.

“Participants in organizations that come to a meeting, they also bring with them their own questions. So if we just pay attention to what they are looking for, we naturally will arrive at achieving an outcome that is co-created.”

“Because we all know that behind every complaint there is a wish, behind every problem they are facing there is a hope that things could get better.“

“When we started BRIEF Academy our intention was to create more ripples of Solution Focus across Asia.“

“I adore Solution Focus. It’s my home, because it is where there are no assumptions. No one assumes about me and I don’t get to assume about you. And I have to be curios.”

“That you can’t be curios and think you know at the same time. As soon as we think we know there are no good questions.”

“So in a Solution Focused session (…) we have the first part which is all about ‘What do they want?’ (…) and then (…) the second process which is ‘What do they have?’ (…) the third part is about ‘What’s next?'”

Teri Pichot, LCSW, MAC, LAC

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Teri Pichot, LCSW, MAC, LAC, Solution Focused Animal-Assisted Brief Therapist and Solution Focused Trainer at the Denver Center for Solution-Focused Brief Therapy about

what fascinates her about Solution Focus

what fascinated her when she learned about Solution Focus for the first time

how her work changed as a result of getting to know Solution Focus

how she works with her therapy dog and how her dog assists her in doing Solution Focused Brief Therapy

how she started to bring her dog to work as a Solution Focused therapy assistant and how this influenced her work

how having a dog around changes the environment and the interactions

how she creates exceptions for her clients with her therapy dog and how she uses these exceptions in the session with asking Solution Focused questions

what she does in her Solution Focused trainings to teach participants to use SF on purpose

the first third of a SF session – „What do clients want?“ -, the second third – „What do they have?“ –  and the third third – „What is next?“

how SF needs to be a model of attraction rather than promotion for her

the books Teri wrote

the Challenge of the Week: 1.) If you have an animal: Notice how having an animal in the room or in your life makes you a better human 2.) If you don’t have an animal or want to do both: Think about the purpose of the Solution Focused question you ask.

„We were constantly refining. There wasn’t really a so-called Solution Focused therapy in the form of a noun. Solution Focus was much more of a verb. And we were interested in exploring all of those avenues.“

„At the same time in order to move beyond, that to get better, to engage more clients, I’am probably gonna have to introduce small variations. Things which therapists do naturally, but  they might not do reflectively, so that they know that they are making those particular variations.”

„First I have to carefully describe the outcomes that we are looking for, I have to measure those outcomes and then look for variations in those outcomes (..) to identify learning opportunities.“

Scott Miller, Ph.D.

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Scott D. Miller, PH.D., Founder of the International Center for Clinical Excellence, Author and Promoter of Deliberate Practice, about

how he got in touch with Solution Focus

how he moved to Milwaukee to work at the Brief Family Therapy Center (BFTC) in Milwaukee

what fascinated him with the work at BFTC

how the way they worked back then has a lot to do with the work he does now

how describing Solution Focus to others led to a standardized approach

deliberate practice and how those therapists are most effective that measure their results, reflect their practice, and learn from feedback

the Outcome Rating Scale (ORS) and the Session Rating Scale (SRS) and how they can help you refine your practice

how well Solution Focus fits to deliberate practice

how that way of learning could be transferred to other areas where Solution Focus is applied, like e.g. leadership

the difficulty of measuring outcomes and the questions to ask

talking the language of our clients or talking about what’s meaningful for them

the Challenge of the week: „If you think you are effective, why not find out? Download the measures and begin tracking your outcomes. And see: Are you effective with all your clients? Is it to the degree you thought?”

„I am interested in language and anybody’s use of language is fascinating.”

„Nobody ever asked ‚How did you get out of that?‘ (…) But the fact is, that it is very rare for a therapy session to stay the same. (…) So if it’s really bad what happened that got it better?“

„There need to be, I think, multiple research strategies that are language focused.“

„Emotions are part of life and in particular they are part of language. (…) You can talk about emotions, if you want to (…) but remember it’s talk, you are not getting at emotions in any sense of the essence of it.”

Dr. Gale Miller

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Dr. Gale Miller, sociologist, emeritus research professor at Marquette University, and observer and listener at the Brief Family Therapy Center (BFTC) in Milwaukee, about

what fascinates him about Solution Focus

what intrigued him when he first came to the Brief Family Therapy Center (BFTC) in 1984

the evolution from the ecosystemic approach to Solution Focus

how he could observe Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg

how and what he observed that was going on at BFTC

how they learned through observing, discussing, trying out and observing again

the systematic review and the importance of the  research committee at BFTC or how they watched therapy tapes and discussed them

emotions in the Solution Focused approach

The challenge of the week: Be silent and listen at the next meeting and observe who says what and who response in what way and how the conversation goes on. What do you learn when you see this?

„We would be a group behind the mirror (…) and we would do crazy things, anything went. If someone said ‘Well let’s do this, let’s try this, it’s never been done before’ (…) we tried anything (…) it was this crazy place.“

„I was connecting with the clients easily. Certainly Steve and I were 180 degrees different. (…) And Insoo had her own style. There was a time early on, I always admired her way of interviewing, and I tried very hard to imitate her, and then I suddenly realized I better be myself.“

„I would just like to see it thrive. (…) I just want the Solution Focused Therapy to continue to be appreciated and taught all over the world as it is now. And however it’s been used, if it works, great. There isn’t one way of doing it.”

Eve Lipchik, founding member of the Brief Family Therapie Center in Milwaukee and the Solution Focused approach

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Eve Lipchik, Co-Founder of the Brief Family Therapy Center and the Solution Focused approach, Author, Certified Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist, about

what fascinated her with Solution Focus at the beginning

how Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer met in Palo Alto

how they started the BFTC – the Brief Family Therapy Center – in Milwaukee

how they looked at the recordings of the sessions, tried out new things, and learned from their clients

how Steve de Shazer conceptualized what they were doing

what and who helped to promote Solution Focus

how they learned and moved from the ecosystemic approach to Solution Focus

how the question what clients don’t want to change led them to Solution Focused thinking

how they analyzed the conversations with the questions „What worked?“ and „What didn’t work?”

the different backgrounds and styles of the founding members of BFTC

how scaling and the miracle question emerged out of their work and were refined

how she perceives the newer developments of Solution Focus

working with a philosophy and beyond technique and the importance of constant learning and immersion in Solution Focus

emotions in Solution Focus

her message to Solution Focused practitioners: Don’t mix Solution Focus with other things, commit to one method

The challenge of the week: Think about what it is you need to overcome to feel that you are more confident and adapted doing Solution Focus

„If you are in a generally good mood, you are able to do hard stuff along the way.“

„They can figure out like ‘oh what works for us?‘ instead of me prescribing like ‘You need to do this, you need to do that.‘.

„And asking them ‚So what would you like instead?‘ that relieved me from guessing work.”

„Yeah, I really really love these interactions and the different ideas, and different inspirational things or what worked for them applying the Solution Focus.”

Keiko Yoneyama, MA LMFT
