Parenting can be hard work, and without consistent self-care parents can easily and quickly burn out. Taking care of yourself makes you better equipped to take care of those you love.
When you fly on an airplane, the flight attendant instructs you to “put your oxygen mask on first,” before helping others.
Why is this an important rule for ensuring survival? Because if you run out of oxygen yourself, you can’t help anyone else with their oxygen mask.
Making self-care a priority is not only a gift to yourself but more importantly to everyone in your life.
In this episode I share a mind blowing question that will help you put your selfcare first.

Burnout is an extreme stress condition that leads to severe physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. Much worse than ordinary fatigue, burnout makes it challenging for people to cope with stress and handle day-to-day responsibilities.
People with burnout often feel hopeless and may dread getting out of bed each morning. Burnout doesn’t go away on its own and, if left untreated, it can lead to serious physical and psychological illnesses.
Burnout can be avoided by making self-care part of your daily routine. When you feel physically and emotionally well, it’s often easier to navigate stressors in healthy and productive ways and avoid going down the burnout rabbit hole.
In this episode you will learn how to face challenges and avoid burnout from a place where your selfcare is a strength or a superpower

People often sacrifice self-care because they are too busy trying to save everyone else. To many, putting their own needs first feels somehow wrong, or even selfish.
Taking care of yourself is the opposite of being selfish, as it strengthens you and enables you to support your loved ones better. It is a number one priority that must be taken care of NOW.
In this episode I share tips to help you actively prioritise time and effort into looking after your physical, mental and emotional health and well-being NOW.
Getting into good habits, treating your mind well, building resilience and knowing the signs to look out for when the wheels are starting to get wobbly is the most empowering thing you can do for yourself and others.

Certain habits contribute to your health, whereas some habits can have negative consequences. For this reason, it’s essential to remove habits that don’t serve you and establish new sustainable healthy habits
Although it may be challenging to develop new healthy habits, in the long-term, it will make your life so much easier. There is a lot more you need to do besides having that willpower. Habits often develop from things you keep doing in your everyday routine, rather than from just making decisions and not taking regular actions.
You need to focus on small habits that you can stick to so you turn your selfcare into a superpower.

As you become older, your knee joints causing pain and discomfort will only increase. Often, this is a result of the natural wear and tear of the cartilage between your knees causing it to wear away, decreasing the protective space between your bones. However, many other factors can lead to the chronic pain and stiffness that prompts knee surgery, including overuse, an injury, a sedentary life, a poor diet or even bad night’s sleep.
Luckily, holistic approaches exist to increase your mobility, reduce pain and swelling, and build your knee strength. In many cases patients who opt for natural solutions can avoid knee surgery entirely or significantly delay it.
The key is to move with confidence. Most people think that moving joints further damages their knees. This concept is wrong. By moving your joints, you are lubricating them and making them healthier.
In this episode I share tips to get rid of pain and help you get back into the shape of your life physically and mentally.

Menopause is a natural biological process all women experience. Many people are familiar with some of the physical symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats, but there are many emotional symptoms that occur as well. These symptoms can disrupt your life by affecting your ability to get a good night’s sleep, lowering your energy levels and even causing feelings of depression and anxiety.
It is easier to deal with something that you have some understanding of. Emotional symptoms are caused when the hormones that normally regulate mood and emotions are out of balance. Swing moods can be frequent, extreme, and easily triggered making you feel as if things are not quite right. Some women experience them and others don't.
When you are healthy, you are more resilient to face and understand this natural process of your body.
In this episode I share six effective tips to help you minimize the symptoms and feel at your best during this natural yet confusing period of your life.

With a newborn, your family life enters a new era, where family dynamics undergo tremendous changes. These affect you, your partner, and any other members of the family living with you. Your family members must prepare to face radical transformations and challenges that accompany the arrival of the new loved one.
Parents who choose to breastfeed may experience changes to their sleep. Sleep deprivation, or not getting sufficient sleep, extracts a toll on all of us in terms of mood, health, safety, and even longevity in all of us.
I have two kids in the house and a newborn.
Self-care during these weeks is very important. Settle sleep, modulate movement and filter food are key to taking your self-care to be a strength or a superpower. Once you are in that zone, you will be able to support your loved ones and manage your business successfully.

A lifestyle with a lot of sitting and little to no exercise is bad for your health. It affects your body and you can have health risks. By not getting regular exercise, you gain weight, your immune system may not work as well, you raise your risk of diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure amongst more. The more sedentary you are, the higher your health risks are.
You can change your lifestyle. You can jump from a sedentary life to a place where your health is a strength or a superpower.
In this episode I share the key core ingredient to losing weight and gaining an ideal weight for a healthy long life.
I suggest creating and maintaining a new body image for yourself. It starts with one step, visualizing how you want to feel and act in your new body. It is important you keep that in your mind and repeat it over and over again so it becomes part of your unconscious identity. This avoids you from falling back into the “yo-yo cycle” and gaining weight again. Thinking everyday of that new version of yourself is going to be your set point of a thermostat that you always can come back to.
Where your mind goes, action flows. To live a positive life you need to change that self image

When you read, you develop feelings and thoughts. It fires up your imagination and stimulates the memory centers of your mind while keeping it active. Books can hold and keep all kinds of information, stories, thoughts and feelings unlike anything else in this world. The importance of reading as a repeated habit, is that it BOLSTERS YOUR BELIEFS.
Greater happiness and peace of mind will help you keep you on your self care track to become the better version of yourself.

Motivation allows us to gain valued outcomes like improved performance, enhanced well-being, personal growth, or a sense of purpose. Motivation is a pathway to change our way of thinking, feeling, and behaving.
As mentioned in previous episodes, there are four levels of self-care based on where your health care is at: self-care as a problem, self-care as a weakness, self-care as a strength and self-care as a superpower.
The motivation to make positive changes to your health comes from a feeling that your life really matters. When self-care is a weakness or a problem, people are usually unmotivated.
In this episode I share three effective ways to get healthy even though you don't feel motivated. Talking to yourself as if you were someone you love, implementing my seven steps to living your best life and finding someone who believes in you more than you believe in yourself.

In this episode, I dive into Dr. Sarah E. Hill’s book “How the Pill Changes Everything: Your Brain on Birth Control” and I highlight some crucial points you may consider before taking birth control pills. It isn’t about whether you should have the pill or not, it is about having access to the right information so you can choose smartly what is best for you.
If you need help as to what is best for you, I highly recommend buying Dr. Hill’s book: https://www.amazon.com/How-Pill-Changes-Everything-Control-ebook/dp/B07QCPS2WV
Sarah E. Hill, Ph.D. is a professor of psychology and researcher. She reveals how the Pill is changing women all around the globe, for better and worse.
The birth control pill (also called "The Pill") is a daily pill that contains sex hormones. Many women go on the pill for pregnancy prevention without knowing what else it can do to their body. For a long time it has been ignored and gone unstudied.
Research has proven the pill impacts a whole lot of cells at once, many of which are in the brain. This influences attraction, sexual motivation, hunger, eating patterns, emotion regulation, and friendships. It also alters your stress response and affects your choice of mate selection.
Furthermore, hormonal birth control is highly linked to depression and suicides.
Being on the pill changes who you are. It not only has a big impact on yourself but on all the world around you. If you have access to information, not only can you make wise choices about your health but you can also prevent sad episodes from happening.

Owning a business is one of the most stressful things a person can do. Business owners feel pressure from all angles and are constantly facing emotional, physical, mental and financial struggles. So much so that there’s often no time left for their own self care.
When selfcare is a problem or a weakness, a business owner’s life in general becomes very challenging.
Investing in self-care first is crucial to make a positive impact on your business. It helps you have more energy, stay productive, make good critical decisions, reduce stress and avoid illness.
Today I focus on what you can DO in a sustainable way to make a positive impact on your business. The Wescombe Method has three core pillars, one of them is “DO”. This one includes three health and performance forces: modulate movement, filter food and settle sleep.
I dive deep into the importance of getting a good variety of exercise done, eating healthy food, time-restricted eating and sleeping well.

The three core pillars of The Wescombe Method are: think, feel and do. Each core pillar includes three health performances. “Belief” belongs to the core pillar “think”. Having said this, what you believe becomes your thoughts, your thoughts influence how you feel and ultimately influence what you do.
Beliefs change the way you feel about yourself, everyone and everything. If you want to live a healthy life, you need to look into your beliefs and identify them.
There are limiting beliefs and empowering beliefs. Limiting beliefs are those that prevent you from getting the most out of your life. Empowering beliefs are those that make you live a healthy and happy life. You can remove beliefs, reset limiting beliefs with empowering ones, adopt new beliefs and take empowering beliefs to the next level.

What about MUM!?
Mothers self-worth is determined by their selflessness. Society tends to celebrate the fact that women and mothers nurture everyone else before themselves. Instead, society needs to support and encourage mum to value herself.
Most mums put everybody and everything else first to the detriment of their own wellbeing. Sleepless nights, long work hours, social responsibilities, and everything in between all add up to ensure that most mums are in a perpetual state of exhaustion and overwhelm.
Without self care physical symptoms like pain, fatigue, depression and anxiety start to appear. Inevitably, mums get to see medical professionals that not only treat them like another number but prescribe rest and medication making things worse.
I want to prevent this. My mission is to help women put themselves first and give them a place of nurturing and loving support. My desire is to help them get into the best shape of their lives so they can live healthier for longer.
At Best Body I get to know people from a holistic perspective, delivering better client experience with lifelong results. As a team we are working to create real generational change for women and girls. We want kids seeing parents putting self-care first. When they become parents they will be naturally conscious doing all that is best for their body to live happily and to the fullest.
When self-care drops down to a weakness or a problem, mothers must know there is a community that supports them and helps nurture them back.
Self-care must turn into mums superpower. Mums should do all the things that they love to do for longer. How can we help them?

In this episode I talk about how setting one simple goal each day turns into simple habits creating a domino effect that can change your life.
At some point in your childhood, chances are that you tried this game: Line up a bunch of dominoes in a row and then knock one over. Soon the rest of the dominoes topple in a chain reaction. Research has shown that a domino can knock over another one that is 1.5 times its size. One domino the size of a tic tac could tumble a whole building.
If you feel overwhelmed and don’t know what to do with your health, at Best Body we help you find that first small and simple domino that will hit the next. Once you take that first step, we celebrate the positive little green force you have done for yourself and start to build and grow on that, getting you back on track.
That first tiny domino is what I call a small goal. You need to find that one small and easy thing that you can do that is going to have a snowball effect each day. That simple goal will turn into tiny habits and overtime into big habits that will make a huge difference in your life.

In this episode I talk about how your beliefs affect your health. I dive deep into what is a belief, why beliefs are useful or useless, how to recognize limiting beliefs, how to separate beliefs from facts and how to bolster them. I also dive into Best Body new members' beliefs compared to those that long-term members have, why it is crucial to trust yourself and the importance of having total confidence in your body.
Every decision starts with a belief. We base our decisions on what we know to be true and believe. However, sometimes we believe something that isn’t true.
No belief is right or wrong. They are useful, some are more than others, and some are even useless. The important thing is to be able to separate them from what is true.
How? Asking yourself questions. Is this belief helpful? or Is there a better belief? or Is there a more empowering belief? Then look at the research and the facts and really bolster that belief so it becomes unstoppable in a way it is useful for you.
When people go to the doctors they often get told their bodies are fragile, and the people believe them. Most of Best Body’s new members come in with limiting beliefs. They believe their bodies are broken and are too scared to move. Long-term members have been able to reframe those beliefs and have developed and bolstered ones that are useful to them.
Limiting beliefs make you think you can’t do things when you really can. Your body is meant to handle anything and it is working for you all the time. You need to trust your body. Confidence in your body is one of the most important factors to heal and get better.
At Best Body we help professionals scrutinize and test their limiting beliefs so they can start to take the action to build the new capability and form new beliefs. Sometimes it is difficult to examine your own beliefs. As a coach, I give you a simple task and ask you a couple of questions. This will give me an idea of where your body and mind integration is so we can move forward.
Recognize your limiting beliefs as thoughts, not facts, put them aside and reframe them. BOLSTER YOUR BELIEFS!

In this episode I talk about why improving your sleep is crucial to losing weight and keeping in shape. I dive deep into how much sleep adults need and what happens to your body when you don’t get enough sleep or sleep too much.
How much sleep you need changes throughout your lifetime and depends on your age and stage of development. Adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night. Under 7 or more than 9 hours is not good.
Sleep directly affects your mental and physical health and how well you feel during the day. SLEEP AFFECTS WEIGHT.
Research studies have shown restricted sleep and poor quality sleep may lead to weight gain, increase of fat, loss of lean muscle mass, metabolic disorders, an increased risk of obesity and other chronic health conditions.
Further studies have found that a lack of sleep triggers increased levels of ghrelin and decreased levels of leptin leading to increased hunger. This causes overeating and makes calorie consumption challenging.
Focusing on your health and not on your looks is key. Good night sleep is critical to your health. It is very important to be in shape and achieve a weight that makes you feel good and healthy.
Sleeping well can get you back into shape faster and helps you be the healthiest version of you.

In this episode I talk about how thoughts can influence what you feel and what you do. I dive deep in how some beliefs can either work for you or against you when you are in pain.
According to the biomedical model, illness is a condition of the whole person, and treating a patient's bodily parts in separation might alleviate some symptoms without solving the source of the problem. In regards to pain, this model tries to find something wrong in your body, making you believe there actually is a problem. This belief only leads to adaptations that aren't useful to you, making your pain feel worse!
Understanding human health and pain in their fullest contexts is highly important. Changes occur inside and outside your body which is 100% normal and has nothing to do with your pain. Pain depends on how you think about it and how safe you feel in your own body. Negative thoughts and behaviour can perpetuate pain.
You have the ability to change these patterns and move towards progress. You can use The Wescombe Method.
By bolstering your belief, you change how you THINK, how you THINK changes how you FEEL, and this affects what you DO.

In this episode I dive deep in a healthy way to lose weight and feel worthy no matter what shape or size you are.
Society and the media in particular, increasingly reinforce cultural beliefs and project strong views on how we should look, that we as individuals often validate and perpetuate. The more we look at “perfect images” of others and then look to find those same idealised characteristics in ourselves and don’t find them, the worse we feel about ourselves. It’s a cycle that propagates unhappiness and unworthiness.
Feeling worthy no matter what shape or size you are starts with just one step. Today’s first step is improving muscle tone, a modulating movement force from The Wescombe Method core pillar DO. I explain how doing Best Body Reformer Pilates three times a week triggers the three next forces: conscious eating and drinking, better sleep and inner peace, obtaining optimum results in just six months and feeling the best you have ever felt before.

In this episode I talk about The Wescombe Method lifestyle approach, its three category framework, the forces that impact on them and the rating traffic light system.
The Wescombe Method’s is divided into three different categories: Do, Feel and Think, and the three of them are interconnected and are powerful enough to affect each other.
In addition, there are nine forces that impact each category. Modulating movement, filtering food and settling sleep, impact category DO. Creating calm, verifying vision and refining recovery, impact category FEEL. And, choosing community, mastering meditation, bolstering beliefs, impact category THINK. Each force also can easily and very quickly affect the others.
I use a traffic light system to rate each force either with red, orange, or green. Where red means it's not going well and needs to change, orange means some things are going well and others not so well and green means it's doing fine.
I am committed to helping you lighten your forces up and get into the green zone. And the idea is to start just with one, the one you think suits you the best. With just one small change in one of them you can create a domino effect for amazing transformations in both your health and performance.
Living the best life in a body you love is not about the way you look. It is about what you can do, feel, and think each day. My mission is to help you on the journey to reach all day energy, total confidence and inner peace so you are able to become the best version of you.

Welcome to the very first episode of The Selfcare Gap Podcast! In this podcast I will be talking about my holistic approach to health and wellness, and will be sharing all that you need to live the best life you can in a body you love.
My name is Scott Wescombe and I am the founder and CEO of Best Body, a business dedicated to helping people practice self-care and working to create real generational change for women and girls. We want kids seeing parents putting self-care first. When they become parents they will be naturally conscious about avoiding toxic foods, products and practices, and enjoy doing all that is best for their body to live happily and to the fullest.
This is an introductory episode where I share my reason for starting this podcast. Through my story and coaching experience, I want to show you the benefits of a holistic approach to health versus the conventional focus. As well as diving deep into what is self-care, self-care zones and what is a self-care gap.
The women in my life have considerably influenced my approach to health and wellness.
My Nan passed away from cancer when I was just about to begin my physiotherapy studies. During my career and after a lot of research, I learnt that my Nan’s sedentary lifestyle was likely responsible for her illness, and I was utterly discouraged and heartbroken that medical professionals had not taken the time to truly address her health holistically and get her active, instead, they treated her like one more. They would medicate her in response to her symptoms causing terrible side effects.
My grandmother was a great support to my mother. Her death affected her tremendously, and you could see it in her body. I felt the incredible power that relationships can have on someone's health, life and joy in life. The loss of a relationship can impact individuals, families and all the loved ones.
Growing up, I have seen my mother prioritise her career as a nurse and the care for her family over herself. I know it may have impacted her health and wellbeing negatively.
These missed opportunities for health in my grandmother and mother, are what have driven me to the self-care gap. I want to prevent people going down the medical spiral and help them become aware of their own self-care and where their gap is.
Knowing where your gap is, depends on being aware of your own self-care zone. I will talk about four different zones. Self-care as a superpower, as a strength, as a weakness and a problem.
Self-Care as a Superpower: where people are physically, emotionally and spiritually unstoppable. They prioritize themselves. By doing this, they have more energy to do the things they love to do.
Self-Care as a Strength: where people are physically and mentally confident. They can physically do the things they like to do, have good thoughts and a pretty good life.
Self-Care as a Weakness: where people are struggling physically, mentally and emotionally. Strength is a challenge. They eat sugar and have alcohol to numb their struggles and go down in terms of health and performance.
Self-Care as a Problem: where people physically and mentally feel lost. They have given up on working for themselves, feel fatigued and struggle with sleep. After a period of time their body starts to work against them instead of for them, going down the medical pathway. Autoimmune disorders begin to appear and the body can attract chronic issues, disease, and pain.
Helping thousands of people a week, I can say everyone has a gap somewhere along the line. It is important to be aware of your zone and identify your gap. Once you have done that, I will help you take care of the rest. I will be sharing genuine care, quality services and tips to help you achieve your health and bridge the gap. I guarantee transformation takes place when you start bridging that gap.
Where is your self-care at and where does it need to be to live the best life in a body you love?
