Dr. Jeffrey Janis is a Professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, the Chief of Plastic Surgery at University Hospital, and the Co-Director of the Center for Abdominal Core Health. He holds adjunct appointments as a Professor of Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Surgery. He completed his undergraduate degree at the Washington University in St Louis, followed by medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, and an integrated plastic surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. He stayed on as faculty at UT southwestern, eventually becoming program director of the residency program, before departing for the Ohio State University in 2013. Dr. Janis is the Editor in Chief of PRS Global Open, where this podcast is published. He currently serves on the Board of Governors for the American College of Surgeons, and is the former president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Council of Educators in Plastic Surgery, the Migraine Surgery Society, and the American Hernia Society; an the former chair of the board of trustees for ASPS. He has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as several books, including the Essentials of Plastic Surgery, a book used by residents, fellows and surgeons on a daily basis. His current surgical practice focuses on abdominal wall reconstruction, migraine surgery, and breast surgery.

In this Leveling Up episode of the PRS Global Open Deep Cuts Podcast, Dr. Baar talked about the effects of load on tendons and ligaments, how low load long duration loading can improve tendon strength and quality, the effects of stress shielding in tendons, whether resorbable sutures may be superior in tendon repair, why inadequately loaded tendons can develop tendinopathy, the effect of loss of load on tendons and ligaments, how to treat partial ligament tears with isometric exercises, and how increased protein intake is not very effective at increasing tissue recovery without loading and exercise. Dr. Keith Baar is a professor in the Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior, and the Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology, at the University of California Davis Health School of Medicine, in Sacramento. He completed his undergraduate studies in Kinesiology at the University of Michigan, followed by a master's degree in Human Biodynamics at UC Berkeley, and finally a Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Illinois. Now at UC Davis Health, he runs the Functional Molecular Biology Lab. His research focuses on how resistance exercise leads to increased muscle mass and how endurance exercise increases fatigue resistance in muscles. His lab is also working on the development of engineered bone-ligament-bone constructs for the reconstruction of ligament injuries.

Dr. Eamon O'Reilly is board certified general surgeon and plastic surgeon and an Associate professor at the University of Missouri division of Plastic Surgery. Dr. O'Reilly was born and raised in Anchorage Alaska and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Biochemistry, followed by medical school at the University of Washington, and a General Surgery residency at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. After spending a year with the US Navy, working as the only general surgeon in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, he completed a plastic surgery fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He returned to the Naval Medical Center San Diego where he eventually served as the Department Head and the Plastic Surgery Consultant to the US Navy Surgeon General. He deployed overseas multiple times on the hospital ship USNS Mercy, and to Afghanistan NATO Role 3 Hospital in Kandahar. He recently joined the University of Missouri Division of Plastic Surgery where his practice focuses on complex microsurgical reconstruction including limb salvage and limb preservation, head and neck reconstruction, as well as breast and body aesthetic surgery.

Dr. Tormod Westvik is a board-certified plastic surgeon and an Associate Professor in the department of plastic surgery at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He completed medical school at the University of Oslo in 2001, followed by general surgery residency at Yale New Haven Hospital, and a plastic surgery residency at Harvard University. He returned to Norway where he became the Chief of Plastic Surgery and Program Director of the plastic surgery training program at Telemark Hospital Health Trust. After 12 years practicing in Norway, he spent a year in Queensland, Australia, returning to Yale in April 2025. He is the past president of the Norwegian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the past vice president of the Norwegian Association for Plastic Surgeons, the Norwegian representative to the ASPS Global Leadership Forum, the Section Editor for case reports at Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Global Open, and a member of multiple committees within ASPS. Dr. Westvik has a broad plastic surgery practice including breast reconstruction, hand surgery, body contouring and facial aesthetic surgery, and general reconstruction. He is also leading the storied melanoma program at Yale, founded in 1976 by Dr. Stephan Ariyan.

He trained in plastic surgery in Oxford, England, and holds a PhD in Biomedical sciences and an executive MBA. He is the current Chair of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons International Residents Forum and serves as the UK's national trainee lead for the lymphedema special interest group.

After completing his training, he joined the faculty at Georgetown, and has been there ever since. In 2007, Dr. Attinger started an annual limb salvage conference to bring together all the members of the limb salvage community to exchange ideas and innovations.

Dr. Michael Bentz is a Professor of Surgery, Pediatrics, and Neurosurgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, Wisconsin. He recently stepped down as the chief of the Division of Plastic after 24 years and continues to serve as the Vice Chair in the Department of Surgery.
A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Bentz completed medical school and a General Surgery residency at Temple University in Philadelphia, followed by a plastic surgery residency and a microvascular research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He stayed on at Pitt and became the residency program director, but left for Wisconsin in 1999 and has remained a fixture at the University of Wisconsin for the last 25 years, building a broad reconstructive practice including pediatric hand surgery; cleft lip and palate surgery; and general reconstruction of the chest, abdominal wall, extremity and head and neck in adults and children.
Dr. Bentz has served as Chair of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, as an executive committee member for the Association of Academic Chairmen in Plastic Surgery, and has co-edited the two-volume book, Principles and Practice of Pediatric Plastic Surgery. He received the Honorary Citation Award from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in 2018.

Dr. Howard N. Langstein is the Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he brings extensive expertise in microvascular reconstruction to the Rochester area. These microvascular procedures involve surgeries performed through microscopes on very small blood vessels, often used for reconstruction following cancer treatments.
Prior to joining the University of Rochester, Dr. Langstein was an associate professor of Plastic Surgery and the director of the Plastic Surgery Graduate Medical Education Programs at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Besides his proficiency in microvascular reconstruction, he has a strong interest in breast, head, and neck surgeries, as well as cosmetic procedures.
In the mid-1990s, Dr. Langstein held various surgical roles at Mercy Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh. He returned to Houston in 1998, where he eventually became an associate professor at M.D. Anderson and led one of the world's leading microsurgical training programs.

She completed the first four years of her medical training in Varese, Italy, and the remaining two years in the Netherlands. She subsequently worked as a physician assistant at the Maastricht UMC+ and the Viecuri MC and since 2007 she has been working as a plastic surgeon at the Maastricht UMC+. She specializes in performing breast reconstructions, in particular breast reconstructions using the patient's own tissue. He began his surgical training in Trinidad and completed his specialist training in multiple plastic surgery departments in the United Kingdom, including Swansea, Exeter, and Newcastle upon Tyne, where he developed his specialist interest in head and neck and sarcoma reconstruction surgery. After completing his training in the UK, he took up a consultant post in the Caribbean before returning to the UK for his current post in 2006.
His NHS practice has been tailored to looking after patients requiring the highest level of reconstructive expertise. Most of his current work lies with head and neck reconstruction and sarcoma resection and reconstruction, for which he is internationally recognised. He is widely published in all areas, including reconstruction following sarcoma excision. For his expertise and dedication to the treatment of sarcoma, he is currently the lead clinician for the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour Service for the North of England, which sees patients referred with rare tumours from across the northern region. He takes an active role in the broader world of plastic surgery and education, both locally and nationally. He has been the training Program Director for Plastic Surgery Training in the Northeast for eight years and has worked closely with the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre and revolutionised the role of simulation training in basic and higher surgical training locally in the Northeast. He has since applied similar philosophy in the education of head and neck TIG fellows and received consistently high feedback from attendees. He is the first and only plastic surgeon to have been made chair of the head and neck training interface group.
His contribution to maintaining high training standards was recognised when he was chair of the Specialist Advisory Committee for UK plastic surgery in 2018 and has overseen national selection for Plastic Surgical training in the UK. He is a previous examiner for the Intercollegiate FRCS (Plast).

Dr. Dennis Hammond, a board-certified plastic surgeon, is a lifelong Michigander having been born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan. After graduating first in his class from Arthur Hill High School, he attended the University of Michigan both for undergraduate training as a premed student as well as for Medical school. While at Michigan, he served as a manager, and eventually as the senior manager, on the football team under legendary head coach Bo Schembechler whose unyielding commitment to excellence influences him to this day. After completing medical school training in 1985 he was accepted into the integrated Plastic Surgery training program in Grand Rapids, Michigan under the direction of program chairman Dr. John Beernink. Upon graduation in 1990, he then completed two year-long highly competitive fellowships in Plastic Surgery. One, at the Medical College of Wisconsin under the direction of Drs. David Larson and Hani Matloub concentrated on Surgery of the Hand as well as Microsurgery. It was based on this fellowship experience that Dr. Hammond was able to replant the nose of a 16-year-old boy involved in a car accident only two weeks after opening his practice. In searching the literature after this case was successfully completed, it was discovered that this was the first time an amputated nose had ever been conventionally replanted using both an artery and a vein, certainly a tribute to the quality of the training Dr. Hammond received in Milwaukee under the direction of several fine surgeons. However it was the second fellowship that has most directly influenced Dr. Hammond's current academic career. This year long combination research and clinical fellowship in Aesthetic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery was completed in Nashville, Tennessee under the direction of two of the finest breast surgeons in the world, Drs. Pat Maxwell and Jack Fisher.

Dr. Matarasso is currently the Immediate Past President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) as well as on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors, as the largest society of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. He has been a Member-at-Large and Parliamentarian and on the Board of Directors for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Joon Pio Hong, MD, PhD, MBA. is Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Ulsan College of Medicine and Asan Medical Center. He has board certifications in trauma, hand, and plastic surgery. He received his BS degree from the Yonsei University of College of Medicine and his MS degree in medicine and PhD degree from the Graduate School of Yonsei University. He received his MBA on medical management from University of Southern California at Marshall School of Business.
He is an active member of several professional associations such as the American Society of Plastic Surgery, World Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, and Korean Society of Plastic Surgery.
His major work has been research and clinical practice in wound healing, diabetic foot reconstruction and microsurgery. He is the Reconstructive Section Editor for PRS Global Open and also serves on the editorial board for numerous journals including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, International Wound Journal, Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery and more. He has been invited in over 80 countries to present his work and is visiting professor for more than 20 institutions. He has over 180 publications in this field of practice with 24 book chapters including the Neligan Plastic surgery. He was recently awarded the “Godina Travelling Fellowship” from the 2015 American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery.

Mr. Simon Wood is a Consultant at Imperial College NHS Trust in London. He was appointed in 2000 to Charing Cross Hospital and now also supports all other hospitals in the Trust. Mr. Wood specialises in cancer reconstruction, particularly for Head & Neck, Breast and Skin cancer and more recently has developed an interest in managing complex abdominal wall hernias. He trained in Plastic surgery at units in Cambridge, Norwich, Oxford and London. Since taking up his consultant post at Charing Cross Hospital he has developed the reconstructive surgery work there. The unit is recognised for the quality and high success rates for microsurgical free tissue transfer procedures for both breast and head & neck cancer reconstruction. He is a core member of these MDTS as well as the skin cancer MDT at Charing Cross. Mr. Wood has served on the Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) in Plastic Surgery and as the lead for National recruitment in Plastic Surgery and Liaison Representative for Scotland. He was appointed Chair, representing Plastic Surgery on the Joint Committee of Surgical Training (JCST) of the Combined Royal Colleges of Surgeons. He has also served as representative on the Breast Training Interface Groups (TIGs) and supervises trainees appointed to the Imperial post. As Chair of the SAC he was a board member of the Plastic Surgery committee for Joint Committee for Intercollegiate Examinations (JCIE) and in was appointed as representative and also as Treasurer of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).

Very quickly, she established an international reputation as an expert in brachial plexus and peripheral nerve surgery in addition to building an extensive portfolio in basic science research investigating the pathophysiology of peripheral nerve injury, regeneration and allotransplantation. She performed the world’s first nerve allotransplantation in 1988 and is considered a leading expert in the field of peripheral nerve surgery. She was awarded the Gold Medal Award in Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons on Canada in 1988. She briefly transferred her practice to the Toronto General Hospital before being recruited to St. Louis in 1992 where she is currently the Chief, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and Shoenberg Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
In addition to her work in nerve transplantation, Mackinnon has developed a number of nerve transfer techniques in which healthy nerves are rerouted into areas left paralyzed by damaged ones. Her areas of clinical interest in peripheral nerve surgery include hand, upper extremity and lower extremity injury; carpal tunnel syndrome; tarsal tunnel syndrome; thoracic outlet syndrome; brachial plexus injury; cumulative trauma disorder; nerve compression; facial palsy; and hand and upper extremity disorders and injuries.
Susan Mackinnon has been a phenomenal contributor to the fabric of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with leadership positions as President of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Research Council and the American Association of Hand Surgery. His book, Aesthetic Nasal Reconstruction - Principles and Practice, a two volume work published in 2018, has set the standard of care for nasal reconstruction. Dr. Menick started in practice in Tucson, Arizona in 1983 and retired in April 2022.

Dr Peter C. Neligan received his medical education at the University of Dublin, Trinity College, graduating MB, BCh, BAO in 1975. He obtained his FRCS in general surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1980 and subsequently trained in Plastic Surgery in Dublin. In 1983 he moved to Toronto for fellowship training at the University of Toronto, completing fellowships in surgical research, pediatric plastic surgery, microvascular surgery, and burn surgery. Having obtained his FRCS in Plastic Surgery, Dr. Neligan established practice in Sudbury, Ontario in 1987 before returning to the University of Toronto in 1991 to take up a position at the Wellesley Hospital as Director of the Ross Tilley Burn Unit.
In 1993 he moved to Toronto General Hospital where he specialized in oncologic reconstruction and reconstructive microsurgery. Dr. Neligan served as Chief of Plastic Surgery at TGH from 1996 until 2007. In 1996 he was appointed Chair of the University Division of Plastic Surgery. In 1999 he was appointed the Wharton Chair in Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, the first endowed chair in Plastic Surgery in Canada. Dr. Neligan moved to Seattle, WA in July 2007 where he is now a Professor at the University of Washington in the Departments of Surgery and Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery. He is active in numerous societies, and is past president of the Plastic Surgery Foundation, The American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery and the North American Skull Base Society. Dr. Neligan currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and is a past member of the Board of Directors for the American Head and Neck Society. He is the immediate past Chair of the Advisory Council for Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery at the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Neligan has authored 7 books, over 70 book chapters, and over 170 peer-reviewed papers. He is the series editor of the third edition of the 6-volume set, Plastic Surgery, considered to be the bible of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has made over 200 peer-reviewed presentations at national and international meetings as well as delivering numerous invited lectures. He has served as Visiting Professor to numerous institutions nationally and internationally. He sits on the Editorial Board of five journals and is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery.
