Every other company claims that they view their employees as their greatest asset, but talk is cheap if you have nothing concrete to show for it. If you have read “The Dream Manager,” you would have marveled at how a certain cleaning company in Cincinnati models the ideal company culture and you may even have wondered if such a company really exists. The short answer is: it does and its owners and leaders are just ordinary entrepreneurs who were merely trying to do their best to solve a business problem. Listen in as Jesse Cole brings in Mary Miller, the CEO and owner of JANCOA and the very persona behind the dream manager. In this conversation she shares how to create a culture of caring and help your employees achieve their dreams, how to hire differently, how to ask different questions and how to dramatically lower turnover and attract amazing people.

Human beings desire to be heard, but not all of us are fortunate enough to have the gift of hearing. Audiologists take their profession seriously not just to care about hearing healthcare, but to care about the people that had fallen in the gaps and have no access to the kind of treatment that most of us are blessed to have. One of these compassionate people is Nora Stewart, Chief Vision Officer of Entheos Audiology Cooperative. Nora walks us through how they treat their patients exceptionally out of their extraordinary practices – from the patient’s waiting time to keeping in touch with them after their treatment. She talks about the disruption of getting cheaper hearing aids versus spending on professional healthcare and how they addressed it.

But this is only the first of the many other lessons they gained from doing Business Done Differently.

Creating Unforgettable Stories

Some of the best things in life are memorable, but only a select few can become truly unforgettable. Making such stories the very foundation of one's endeavors is a tested and proven way of standing out in business and in life. And these stories will stick with the people you meet and share moments with.

"Nobody's gonna memorize somebody else's mission statement or core beliefs but they will remember your stories if they were meaningful." - Emily Cole

Don Yaeger is an award-winning keynote speaker and 11-time bestselling author. His books are among the best ones for building a successful culture. Today, he discusses the habits and DNA that set great teams apart.

"While profit is an important piece of your road map, it cannot be the only map that tells you whether you are hitting the right treasure or not." - Don Yaeger

The Great Team Concept

Don retired from Sports Illustrated 10 years ago. In the process, he began sharing his knowledge on individual high performance to organizations and companies. This he learned from working with some of the champions like Michael Jordan, John Wooden, Walter Payton.

He was often hired by Microsoft. One interesting question he received was, "Why are some teams regularly relevant and successful when most teams rise and fall?"

"Players just react differently when you intentionally speak to them." - Don Yaeger

What Team Excellence Requires

Since Don had access to a lot of teams, he decided to list them down and to glean over their mechanics. In the next 5 years, he traveled across North America and visited 110 teams.

He found that high performing teams possess a unique set of communications skills. What takes teams to the top does not necessarily take them to another summit. The challenging part is sustaining excellence throughout.

Final Four

  1. What is one thing you've done to stand out in business and in life?

"Learn to become a better storyteller."

  1. What is your piece of advice to someone who is just starting out?

  1. Best advice you have ever received?

"John Wooden talking to me about doing a regular measurement of the people I give my time to and making sure that I was surrounding myself with people who are headed in the right direction and not just randomly giving my time to anybody who asks."

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

"If at the end of the day I get to be a good dad, I'm good."

David Ragosa and Carlo Ruggiero are reinventing the way Americans eat one of the most iconic foods in the world. They are the founders of Kono Pizza, or pizza in a cone. Kono Pizza is setting up franchises in the country, building it one cone at a time.

"For me, there are few factors: faith, patience, passion, and a ton of perseverance." - Carlo Ruggiero of Kono Pizza on building a culture

Kono Pizza - It's About Delivery David and Carlo's product is revolutionary. It took the necessary preparations to come up with the basics for the development of the product. But the journey actually started when they finally had to figure out how to deliver.

The process of figuring out the best way to go about this entailed letting go of tools that no longer worked. They had to consider the way customers saw their product. Part of being an entrepreneur is being able to not go down the same road and fall into a cliff out of pride or an initial vision.

"We did fail, we made mistakes in the beginning. We cannot merely say that in a good way. Obviously that's the only way you learn." - Carlo Ruggiero of Kono Pizza

Franchising is a Privilege David and Carlo consider becoming a franchisee of Kono Pizza to be a privilege, not just a sell. They award franchises, and obtaining one means becoming part of the family.

This sense of community places importance on the obtaining of the franchise, encouraging everyone to share the same vision for quality pizza.

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

“Working super hard."

  1. What advice would you give to someone to stand out in business and in life?

“You have to outwork everybody."

  1. Best advice you’ve ever received.

“Be patient.”

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

“That I left the place better than when I started.” - David Ragosa

“Leaving a legacy not just about the money but about doing the right thing all the time.” - Carlo Ruggiero

Jon is the author of the bestselling book, The Front Row Factor.

"We're trying to be moment makers. We're trying to turn any situation into something more meaningful. We say that we bring meaning to moments. We say that we turn now into wow." - Jon Vroman

Experiencing and Celebrating Life People create meaningful moments that they look into as some source of hope and celebration in the future. When people use the power of future possibilities that spring from the now, they can grab hold of what then becomes the past.

By experiencing life as it happens now and holding some gratitude for the now, people can celebrate more of life today.

"We don't know how much time we all have. We live in gratitude. We live in amplifying the good so that we could silence what sometimes is not as good." - Jon Vroman

Dan Cockerell worked for Disney for 26 years. He started as a parking attendant, finishing his career as the Vice President of Magic Kingdom with 12,000 cast members. Today, he sits with Jesse Cole to share how working together with his crew has helped solidify magic customer service and company culture.

"No one at Disney gets anything done by themselves." - Dan Cockerell

Dan Cockerell - Walking the Park Even after he became a VP, Dan never let go of the little things that make the magic happen at Disney. Every week, he walks the park to see how the cast members are doing, engage with customers, and take a look at the seemingly minute details of the business.

"There are no small things at Disney. And I think in any business, there's nothing that's too detailed." - Dan Cockerell

The magic doesn't happen with the supervisor talking to their managers or with the managers talking to the team staff. The magic happens when the cast members are interacting with the guests. If a business owner can acknowledge how customer service plays a crucial role to success, then they're on the right track towards exactly that.

Cast Members are Guests In order to create magic, supervisors need to remember that their staff deserve the same amount of appreciation and attention as their customers. The Disney company treats its cast members as guests. By letting the cast experience the same magic they're expected to inspire, managers are able to rest easy knowing that they can provide the same service to customers.

"The magic happens anywhere the cast member is interacting with the guests. And that's where it is. And so you gotta remind yourself to always bring it back to that." - Dan Cockerell

Final Four 1. What's something you've done differently in your life to stand out?

"To be open-minded. I've always taken things with a positive attitude."

  1. If you could give advice to someone to stand out in business and in life, what would you say?

"Have an incredibly positive attitude. Find that place where you can add extra value."

  1. What's the best advice you've ever received?

"Do your best and then forgive yourself."

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

"As someone who cared about people and taught them something to help make their life a little bit better."

Chris McCluskey is a visionary thought leader frequently cited as "The Father of Christian Coaching." His ability to niche down and create a lifestyle business and movement has made him stand out in business and in life. In today's episode, he joins Jesse Cole to discuss how it's possible to go all-in on family and creating the lifestyle of your dreams.

"The real learning of anything starts when you begin doing it." - Chris McCluskey

Chris McCluskey - Training Coaches from Home Chris operates the largest Christian training school in the world, Professional Christian Coaching Institute with his wife. The school is a completely virtual community that offers college and graduate-level training. This has allowed Chris and Rachel to work from the comfort of their ranch in the foothills of Ozark Mountains.

The training is tailored for people who wish to enter the coaching profession either part-time or full-time. Whether it's life coaching, leadership coaching, or executive coaching, anyone who wants to acquire the skill sets of a professional coach can be part of the school. And with the traditional requirements of a physical institution done away it, students are evaluated based on their performance in the marketplace.

A Choice Between Career and Family Career is important to fend for the people you love, and so is spending time with family. Chris came home to his family one night, saw what a rough day it has been for them, and realized how much he'd missed. This was the moment he paused to reconsider the limited career choices his education has presented to him.

"We are very much trained not to be entrepreneurs but instead to be employees." - Chris McCluskey

He chose to do away with that and make a career that will allow him to be home for his family.

Desires of the Heart We all have our life questions, but it's counterproductive to dwell on trying to come up with answers that only the future holds. In order to realize one's true potential, it is more important to focus on what we want in life, on that vision that we have of ourselves several years down the road. And only then can we can start working for that goal.

"I can't see what the future's gonna be. What I can discern, if I'll be willing to listen long enough, is the desires of my heart." - Chris McCluskey

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

"At night when I lie down I do less gauging, 'What did I do, what did I accomplish?' and more about, 'Who was I?' I check myself on that 'being.'"

  1. Additional advice you'd give someone to stand out in business and in life.

"Don't miss the central piece of your purpose, your calling. Get clear on why are you here."

  1. Best advice you've ever received.

"In the end if a business fails, it's ultimately not because it wasn't a viable business. It will have failed because your systems failed."

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

"I wanna be remembered as a man who knew why he was here, and he lived fully into that purpose."

Stephan Aarstol is the CEO and Founder of Tower Paddle Boards. He is the genius behind the five-hour workday, which has revolutionized the entrepreneurial industry. Today he shares with Jesse Cole the story of this innovative move and the purpose that drives him to perfect the experience for both his customers and employees.

"We needed to really start measuring things by gross happiness product as opposed to just GDP." - Stephan Aarstol

Stephan Aarstol - Eight-Hour Workdays are Unfounded The history of the eight-hour workday can be traced back to the dawn of the industrial revolution back in the 1800s. To maximize machines, they were run full-time, all-day. This benefited the factory workers who worked three eight-hour shifts in the span of twenty-four hours.

Fast forward five hundred years later and people are still working the same eight-hour shifts. What people fail to understand is that there is no science to this eight-hour workday.

A Life-Altering Assignment Stephan used to write articles for a company. They would give him topics to write about, and it was the assignment on a five-hour workday that began it all. In order to finish the assignment, he started an experiment in the company.

It was an uncomfortable exercise, but realizing how it was exactly how he worked, he thought that the entire company should do the same. A series of experiments and one published article later, they had built a brand that was as unique as it could get and kept people happy.

"If you start giving people a lot more time, they can use that time for different things." - Stephan Aarstol

Happiness is Important When he first implemented the five-hour workday, Stephan hit a lot of walls. His employees left, feeling lost. But at the same time, all kinds of people with different levels of productivity started trickling in, curious and wanting to learn more.

The entire experience has left a great impression on him. And it has made him realize the many ways by which prevailing economic trends have enslaved people. Happiness, therefore, has become more of a privilege than a causal effect of working.

"That flexibility of giving people time and do with it what you want is a huge beneficial thing. And I think some people don't even realize that they need that. But I think it is important for them." - Stephan Aarstol

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

“I've always tried to identify businesses that really add something to humanity.”

  1. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?

“Try. Just start it now.”

  1. What is the best advice you received?

“Focus more on the downside risk.”

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

“For being willing to do what it takes to do what I want and then to share that and help other people to do what they want.”

To hear what Stephan Aarstol thinks about the impact of capitalism on our work mentality, the true benefits of the five-hour workday on productivity, and the merits of a culture founded on happiness, download and listen to the show!

Randy Cohen is the CEO of TicketCity, one of the largest ticket reselling companies in the country. Since its founding in 1990, the company has served over one million customers and sold over four million tickets. Today, Randy joins Jesse Cole to talk about how he's committed to showing up with swagger in everything he does for his customers and employees.

His books, Ticket to the Limit and Show Up With Swagger detail his blueprint to success.

"Don't be afraid to take chances. You gotta be the one head above the sea of heads that stand out." - Randy Cohen

Randy Cohen - Chief Energizing Officer As the CEO of TicketCity, Randy has always owned up to the title, living and breathing it like the hundred-mile whirlwind that he is. With an energy that is higher than that of an average person, he is able to run his business the way it's meant to be handled.

Energy is contagious. Randy admits that his philosophy of jazzing everyone up, creating an inclusive atmosphere that breathes energy, is the very key to his company's success. His employees average twenty-two years in the company and while they're empowered to do what they want, Randy makes it a point to share his energy with them.

Showing Up with Swagger

Great communication with your team is important for any business to trailblaze. You share with them your wins and challenges and build a culture of trust by maintaining communication.

Charisma helps achieve effective communication. But being present, showing up every single day and being available for your employees when they need you is just as significant.

"You're true to your heart. You show up every day... That's a big part of it—being there for everyone when they need you." - Randy Cohen

Taking Chances is a Must

While TicketCity went viral one ball game, it's difficult to find lightning-in-a-bottle moments that present as opportunities to draw attention. But a huge investment you need to make in order to stand out is to capitalize on risks and chances.

It is in realizing how risk-taking goes a long way that will ultimately determine your fate.

"At the end of the day, if you can win on seven, tie on two, and lose on one in any deal that you're doing, I think you'll come out way ahead." - Randy Cohen

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

"Showing up, the WOO WOO philosophy, making it fun, and really, caring and keeping it real and trying to make a difference."

  1. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?

"Do what you say you're gonna do long after the feeling leaves you. When you say you're gonna do something, do it. Don't come up with excuses. Get it done."

  1. What is the best advice you received?

"Love what you do, do it well, and keep on doing it."

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

"So on the tombstone. You know what, if it just says, 'WOO WOO' with a couple of exclamation points and me pointing with both my fingers at you in front of me, I'm there. In it to win it."

Geoff Blades is a personal development guru who’s an absolute inspiration and content machine. A former investment banker, he is now one of the top CEOs all over the world.

His bestselling books, Do What You Want and The Trump Presidential Playbook are available for you to dive into and learn a thing or two about grabbing attention to bolster your endeavors.

Geoff Blades - Getting What You Work For

Coming from a working class background, Geoff learned from an early age what it takes to afford a better pair of shoes. You need to work for the things that you want and you need. This basic philosophy is exactly what changed the game.

“If you put your head down and work hard, you can fundamentally transform your reality.” - Geoff Blades

He began taking his education seriously, ultimately landing him in a good university and a job at Goldman Sachs.

What You Want

Very few people can answer what seems to be the most pressing of questions one can encounter in their entire lifetime. What do we want? Geoff believes, however, that it’s not so much as not knowing what we want in life.

“Most people know exactly what they want but they don’t believe that they can get it and so they don’t give themselves the permission to open up their mind and go for it.” - Geoff Blades

Understanding what we want, however, is only the first step to becoming successful and standing out in life.

Final Four

  1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life? “I do what I want.”

  2. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life? “Do what you want. Find your edge.”

  3. What is the best advice you received? “Own it.”

  4. How do you want to be remembered? “For being willing to do what it takes to do what I want and then to share that and help other people to do what they want.”

To hear what Geoff Blades thinks about the special snowflake mindset, how he perspires inspiration, and how he fares in business jeopardy, download and listen to the show!

Christopher Wirth is the founder and president of No Quit Living. He is also the host of the eponymous podcast that rated as a Top 50 Business Podcast on iTunes. A former coach of the AAU, as well as in high school and college levels, he has now upped his game by being a coach in the business world.

A Love for Coaching Growing up, Christopher loved basketball. He reached the peak of his career as a player in high school, which eventually gave way to his career as a coach during summer when he was in college. With his terrific team of talented players, he was put on the map with high-end coaches wishing to recruit his flock.

“It almost happened by chance that I realized that I loved coaching the kids and I loved connecting with them.” - Christopher Wirth

This love for coaching athletes spilled over into his next career. Business, life, and sports, it seems, have a lot of parallelisms that Christopher realized throughout the years.

Accountability is a Staple It takes two to tango. A coach holds a player accountable for failure by increasing their laps. But a coach, and an employer, must hold themselves in an even higher level of accountability than anybody else to establish trust within a team.

“That’s the biggest thing we’ve seen. The overlap is the accountability.” - Christopher Wirth

This accountability should jive with a coach or an employer’s efforts to make sure that their teams understand the reason as to ultimate why they’re working together. At the end of the day, this level of awareness determines just how successful a company can be.

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

“I try to deliver first.”

  1. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?

“Don’t just follow the norm. Do something a little bit different, but do it genuinely for yourself as well as the other person."

  1. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Just keep your eyes on the prize and keep going, and when you feel like giving up, don’t.”

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

“I wanna be remembered as the individual or company that helped people and motivated and inspired them.”

Darren Ross is the COO of the Magic Castle Hotel in Hollywood CA. His hotel has been rated number 1 or number 2 in all of the Los Angeles area by TripAdvisor. It’s been featured in the best-selling book, The Power of Moments by Dan and Chip Heath. Darren is also the Chief Executive Freak of Service Freak Hospitality, a hotel management company.

“Companies are afraid to do this (free items) because they are thinking short-term profits over long-term plans.” - Jesse Cole

Jesse recently stayed at the Magic Castle Hotel and was absolutely blown away. On his way out the door to do a show in his yellow tux, Darren greets him and knows exactly who is. Darren searched him on his social media prior to his stay. That’s just part of what the Executive Freak does to make his guests’ experience over and above what they would get anywhere else.

“Our job is to compel our customers...to scream about us without asking them to do so.” - Darren Ross

Darren Ross Creating the Magic In the early 2000’s, Darren had a secret shopping gig and went to the hotel. His first encounter was a hotel employee smoking at the front desk. The owners were dedicated to the hotel and placed him first as general manager to begin the process of rejuvenating the hotel built in 1957.

“I purposely stay away from technology...it takes away from what our business is, the face-to-face experience.” - Darren Ross

The hotel is a renovated apartment complex that’s limited by its age and space. There’s no bar, room service, spa, elevator, etc., but this does not stop them from creating an amazing experience for the guests.

Drawing from His Childhood A lot of the experiences at the hotel come from Darren’s personal experiences from childhood. There’s a hotel stay, in particular, that’s he’s fond of. Imagine an unlimited Hershey Kisses fountain and kids. He doesn't remember the hotel and Darren can’t tell you the color of the carpet but he does remember the experience and that’s what he strives to create for his guests.

“You’ve got to put yourself in your customer’s shoes... (to) experience and realize there are friction points. - Jesse Cole

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

“I think honesty and accountability are incredibly important. We all make mistakes. I like to run into the problem instead of running away from the problem.”

  1. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?

“Be generous."

  1. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Apply hotel principles to your business.”

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

Piyush Patel is the founder of Digital-Tutors, a company providing e-learning opportunities for visual effects artists specializing in film and video games. He has built a culture founded on mutual respect and orange-induced creativity that continues to guarantee success for him and his flock.

His book, Lead Your Tribe, Love Your Work is up for grabs on Amazon!

“I found out that my biggest competitive advantage was my culture.” - Piyush Patel

Piyush Patel - Orange for Creativity The tech world has been defined by blacks and grays long after its conception. Piyush figured that in order to stand out, they needed to embrace their own color. Deciding on using orange effectively differentiated them from everybody else.

Piyush also says that orange is the color of creativity at work, an effect coming full circle when the color was first chosen for their brand.

Overcoming the Culture Hurdle Piyush remembers a time when he hated going to work. This is hugely attributed to the fact that the basic foundation of any company, its core values, weren’t established.

“I had to kind of go on this journey myself of ‘Who am I?’ and ‘What am I gonna stand for?’ And that’s gotta be the company core values.” - Piyush Patel

Realizing what these values are, Piyush came back to a company that has started to turn around and grow into the big thing that it is now today.

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

“I have stayed true to who I am.”

  1. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?

“Don’t try to be somebody you’re not."

  1. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Even if people tell you you can’t do it, only you can say you can’t do it.”

Jordan Harbinger is the host of The Jordan Harbinger Show Podcast where the most successful people in the world have been guests. With his unique way of starting up things and forging relationships, he has become an indispensable force in the business industry.

“Instead of giving up or cramming himself [like], you know, the square peg to a round hole, he forged his own path.” - Jordan Harbinger

Jordan Harbinger - Hacking the System Jordan confesses that he wasn’t exactly a self-starter. In fact, he had alternating phases of misbehaving and excellency throughout his academic journey. These instances of truance could’ve contributed to what seemed to be an eventual rebelliousness, but it wasn’t the case.

“I just really hated the way that the system worked. And I found, what was in my opinion, better ways to deal with those situations.” - Jordan Harbinger

He wasn’t being rebellious on purpose at all. Jordan just refused to give up on himself.

Against the World His burgeoning penchant for going against the current was set in stone when he took the plunge and decided to invent his own concentration. Jordan went to college wanting to get practical skills for business. And get them he did.

He took up several language, political science, and economic courses, consulting from time to time with school officials to guide him. In the end of it all, he graduated as the sole University of Michigan alum with a degree in Integrated International Commerce.

“Which one says leader? The guy who plummeted through the spreadsheet class and just got it done or the person who’s like, yeah, this isn’t working for me, let me just make an entire major of myself?” - Jordan Harbinger

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

“I stand out by making sure that I leave other people better than I found them ideally.”

  1. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?

“Any time something doesn’t go your way, you should ask yourself, what are the parts of this that I had within my own control?"

  1. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

“At least once a year, really take stock of what you’re doing and ask yourself if this is the direction you wanna go in.”

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

“This person created something that people used to become better.”

Mike Ganino is obsessed with culture. He breathes it and lives it, proven by his keynote motivational speeches and his fascination with improv theater. His experience in hospitality has let him grow iconic brands, and now he’s turned to aid people in understanding how a culture can run a company.

His book, Company Culture for Dummies, has hit the shelves! Check it out!

Mike Ganino - Stories by Employees Matter Mike gained his extensive knowledge about company culture from his first-hand experience in working with different companies and also different franchises of a single corporate umbrella. He has learned through his many engagements that culture differs from one location to another, from one room to another.

These smaller units, microcosms, oftentimes work off the company handbook. The employee-guest experience, which is what sticks and resonates to customers, always drives this culture. The company story, therefore, ultimately banks on your employees.

“Your company is actually all of the stories your employees tell.” - Mike Ganino

In the long run, these stories of experience will impact your brand more than anything else that you do.

Caring and Clarity Showing how you care for your employees from pre-onboarding down to their every day with the company will help them engage. A sense of caring may come from a casual text message to welcome a new hire or from letting your employees in the know of how the business is actually faring.

“There’s the ability to create a sense of caring no matter what kind of culture you have.” - Mike Ganino

This sense of caring does not have to be deviant from your company’s brand and culture. People need to feel like they’re needed and that they matter. You can only achieve this if you go out of your way to foster clarity in every aspect of your business, which will naturally breed a caring culture.

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

“To be inexcusably myself and to be okay being that comfortable with people.”

  1. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?

“If someone else was sharing you, what were they saying about you? You should double down on presenting that side of yourself to everybody as much as you can."

  1. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

“The idea of getting really clear about what you want.”

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

“I want people to remember that I gave them hope by giving them simple things they can do to get better and then I helped them have a little bit of fun with it.”

His book, The Motivation Myth: How High Achievers Really Set Themselves Up to Win, has made it to the best sellers list of New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon, helping thousands of people in working to achieve their goals.

Jeff Haden - Comfortable Being Uncomfortable Introverted, Jeff admits to being terrible with complimenting people. He knows he needs to break out of that shell of inherent shyness, and he’d thought to work on it by committing to a “compliment challenge.” All day long, he’d paid people compliments whenever they made eye contact with him.

It was an enriching experience, albeit no easy feat.

“How cool is that... that you can walk around and actually make a small difference in other people’s lives?” - Jeff Haden

This one-day challenge has become a habit, almost second nature. To be comfortable with being uncomfortable is something that everyone needs to learn at one point or another, and it comes in handy when the mere thought of acting on a plan, whether big or small, seems too daunting.

Motivation is Everything Jeff proclaims that he’s a big procrastinator, and a lot of people can surely relate to feeling stuck when you have yet to start. It's even more difficult to focus on what’s in front of you when you’re conditioned to keep a laser eye on the end result.

But Jeff believes that no matter how difficult the process may look, getting things done leads to the actual motivation that you need to gain more success.

“The hard way is usually the way that works.” - Jeff Haden

Action leads to motivation, and breaking in that glove will always require some effort.

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

“It’s getting things done."

  1. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?

“Be the best person at your job.”

  1. What is the best advice you received?

“Shut up. You’re not as smart as you think you are.”

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

“I was an average person who worked hard, and tried hard, and got to accomplish things that were not necessarily average.”

Billy Gene Shaw is known as the Facebook marketing guy, having founded the advertising agency that is Billy Gene Is Marketing Inc. Owning and living the word itself, he has risen through the ranks by being a little bit crazy, ultimately making it his mission to disrupt the educational system and offer the kind of teaching people deserve and will get them the skills they need in order to grow their business.

“Sell or be sold.” - Billy Gene Shaw

Billy Gene Shaw - I Am Marketing Billy started off like anyone else, trying to kick his company off the ground (while staying in his mom’s). When a brand name did occur to him, it wasn’t some genius moment. It took realizing the up-and-coming director Tyler Perry’s strategy and adopting it to his own.

“Nobody can take my name and take it away from marketing. It is what it is.” - Billy Gene Shaw

With what he does tagged to his name, he was able to create waves in the marketing world. His outrageous videos of movie parodies, ingeniously titled, “The Lone Wolf of Advertising”, “00GENEIUS”, and “The Greatest Adsman” are certified attention-grabbers, setting in stone his most prized ability as a marketer and salesman. He’s not different from everybody else but honest and real, which translates into his work.

The Trifecta for Success In order to make a name in marketing, he stuck to his three-step scheme: Entertain, Educate, and Execute. He has long acknowledged the need to get attention in order to sell a business. His silly videos tickle his prospective clients, whose curiosity then grows to a height that compels them to learn more about him and what he does.

“I know as a marketer who’s selling people on the idea of using advertisements to grow their business, I need to do the same thing for myself.” - Billy Gene Shaw

And so his agency evolved, taking on the mission to educate people how to build their own business. His school, G.E.N.E.I.U.S., has helped entrepreneurs beat even the brightest of minds through investing on and honing their skills.

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

“Own video. When people think of Billy Gene Is Marketing, they always go to some entertainment video. They know a lot about me. I’m transparent. I hold nothing back.”

  1. What advice would you give someone to stand out in business and in life?

“Get the skills. Period. That’s all that matters.”

  1. What’s the best advice you’ve received?

“Make it happen.”

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

“Giving all types of people, of all different races, of all different incomes the ability to live life on their terms.”

Tom Rubens has founded, bought, sold, and managed businesses in industries as diverse as a commodity trading company, a real estate brokerage, investment groups, and minor league baseball and basketball franchises. His four decades in business have taught him the painful yet profitable lesson that you have to look beyond the balance sheet and address the big problems that drag down organizations including the health of those running it.

His book, Lifeness, is an Amazon #1 Bestseller and the foundation of building a bridge to a more harmonious life.

Tom Rubens - The Minor Leagues Tom, like Jesse, has owned minor league baseball teams. He got started in the mid 80's when he woke up one day and decided he wanted to own a minor league basketball team. At the time, Tom had lost almost everything he had and it didn't seem particularly realistic but he made it his goal but he knew there was a team for sale in Rockford IL, in the CBA. Tom didn't even know what that stood for.

"I am not afraid of failing. I am much more afraid of not trying." - Tom Rubens

He was living in Chicago, earning his living as a commodities trader. It's a great business but a roller coaster one. Tom knew you had to get out on a high and instead he got out in a low. Not only did it wipe him out financially, it wiped him out emotionally.

Building a Winning Team Tom left that business basically broke and didn't know what to do with himself. A year later he called information, at the time you actually talked to a human, there was no Google, and the operator gave him the number for the Rockford, IL minor league basketball team, the Lightning.

"The [business] tool I use the most is listening." - Tom Rubens

The CBA commissioner actually answered the phone! They discussed the team and Tom's interest in purchasing it. He found someone that owned an expansion franchise. with $25,000 in his pocket, he was a bit short of the $375,000 price tag.

At the end of August, Tom had negotiated a down-payment of $25,000 with the balance to be paid by the end of April. tom managed to put together a group of investors and it turned out to be so successful, he continued with the business model.

Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life?

"I have always had the confidence that even if I screw up, I could work my way out of it."

  1. What's the best advice you would give to someone to stand out in business and in life?

"Do something you love. Make sure whatever you do in life, make sure you love it. "

  1. What's the best advice you've received?

"Look at life like tomorrow is going to be a great day, every day."

  1. How do you want to be remembered in business and in life?

"I was totally clean and clear in all of my relationships."

John Ruhlin has worked with the who's who creating amazing gift strategies for client growth and retention. Today, he breaks down how anyone-from mail clerk to managing director-can master the magic of Giftology.

John Ruhlin - Creating Advocates

Gifts are not only for your client. They are also for your client's spouse, assistant or their team members, the "inner circle". If you take care of the [client's] entire family, everything else in business seems to take care of itself. - John Ruhlin Often times, the client's spouse doesn't always get the best side of things. The client is often traveling and speaking, go out to dinners and golf outings and long days. Anytime you can honor that relationship you are building relationships and advocates.

Discovering the Power of Gifts

John was attending college on his way to becoming a doctor. His mentor, Paul Miller was an attorney from a small town. John likens him to a Rainmaker. He was always giving away gifts and things and picking up tabs. It wasn't a sales tactic, it was just who he was. Because of this he was the most respected and liked guy in town. [My favorite question is] Who are the 3 most important people in your world and how can I help you love on them? - John Ruhlin - client relationship building During the summer, John interned at Cutco Knives. He figured pocket knives would be a good gift to give and pitched the idea to Paul. Paul said he'd really like to give away paring knives he could engrave. John was dumbstruck wondering why he wanted to give a kitchen tool to a powerful executive.

Target the Whole Team

Paul had discovered over 40 years in business the reason he had such success in business and with people is the fact he took care of the whole family and the business took care of itself. That was the lightbulb that went off. He realized the power of reciprocity and giving and relationship building and not just with the decision maker or CEO.

Final Four

  1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life? "Spending $3 on metal business cards. The details matter."
  2. What's the best advice you would give to someone to stand out in business and in life? "Give more than is reasonable. "
  3. What's the best advice you've received? "To not walk the road alone. Give up control and not try to do everything on my own."
  4. How do you want to be remembered in business and in life? "I gave more than is reasonable. I am a man of faith and I am generous." To hear the 10 things John says you must do to be a successful giver, download and listen to the episode!

Marketing with Peanut Butter and Jelly When Neen first arrived in the states from Australia, she had no clients and no money. One of the first things she did was send a jar of peanut butter and jelly to one of the most senior executives at Comcast Cable in their Philadelphia office and she ended up getting the business!

It took a bit of stealth research. Neen connected with the HR developed and volunteered to speak for City Year, it’s like Peace Corps for kids. Her job was to teach them how to market themselves after school and in college.

Neen started asking questions like who is in charge of Comcast’s learning and development and what is his favorite thing to eat is. Neen bought a jar, sent it to his address in the building with a note asking for a lunch meeting to eat peanut butter and jelly. Ten years later and they are still a client. All from a jar of peanut butter and jelly!

For over a decade, Joey Coleman has helped organizations retain their best customers and turn them into raving fans through his entertaining and actionable keynotes, workshops, and consulting projects. As a recognized expert in customer experience design and an award-winning speaker at national and international conferences, Joey specializes in creating unique, attention- grabbing customer experiences. He works with companies ranging from small start-ups, to mid-size businesses, to large Fortune 500s.

Joey’s First 100 Days® methodology helps fuel successful customer experience endeavors at companies and organizations around the world. It’s a system designed to dramatically increase your customer retention and, as a result, your bottom line.

Joey Coleman - Connecting with the Right Customers? As a consumer, one of the first things Joey and most people look at when they goes to a website is price. How much is this going to cost? Guess what, if it’s out of your budget, it’s out of your budget. That’s ok, you have two choices, go find more money or go find someone else.

“What you get is what you see. There’s no secrets it’s all out there. The good the bad and the ugly and everything in between.” - Joey Coleman on speaking

Joey put on his website, this is what it costs to hire me to speak. He realized it might be out of some people’s budget. As much as he would like to connect with everyone, if someone is not going to be a good fit for his business, he doesn't want to waste his time or their time.

“If you really want to succeed, you have to be creating personal and emotional connections with your customers.” - Joey Coleman

An Aha Moment Born from Joey’s Undergrad Studies Joey Coleman was running an ad agency and he was helping a client drive clients to a new area of their business and as quickly as they were bringing them in the front door, they were running out the back. He could get the phones to ring and get the customers to come but the client could not retain them for longer than an initial engagement. He discovered this was a pervasive problem across all industries. Somewhere between 20-70% of customers would leave before they reached the 100 day anniversary.

During undergrad studies, Joey took a class called ‘government and international relations’ where they focused on the president. Today, everyone focuses on the first 100 days of presidency in determining what the next 4 years are going to look like. The same holds true for business.

“There is nothing that will give you a better insight into a the lifetime value of a customer than the first 100 days. - Joey Coleman

Final Four

  1. What have you done differently in your life to stand out?

“I’ve always been willing to do the next thing. I didn’t leave a job because I hated it, I left it because I found a job that I loved more.”

  1. What advice would you give someone starting out in business?

“Trust your gut. Human beings are good and decent people who know what the right choice is.”

  1. The best advice you have ever received?

“My wife reminds me regularly that I need to sleep more. It’s a lot easier to be creative when you’ve had a good night’s sleep.”

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

Robb Holman is a life-long serial entrepreneur and the CEO of Holman International, a global leadership consultancy. He’s also the author of the best-selling book, Lead the Way. Today, Jesse and Robb talk leadership done differently.

“Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to watch you burn.” - Robb Holman

Robb Holman - What’s Firing Him Up? Robb is a successful entrepreneur, speaker, coach, author and man of passion. His greatest passion is his family. Watching his wife and kids do what they love and being able to help and inspire them to do what they love, is what fires Robb up. The inspiration he gives to leaders is the same he gives to his family.

He doesn’t like to categorize his time. He doesn’t put on his work hat or his family hat. To Robb, that’s tiring and unhealthy and causes undue stress. He views his life as one wheel with many spokes. He is whoever he is wherever he goes. There’s an ease and expectancy to it. He’s free to be himself and feels liberating to Robb.

“Live a life of intentional gratitude.” - Robb Holman

Self-Discovery Today so many people are into self-help they think if I could just be like this person or that person, I’d be a better me. Robb sees this as a fallacy and a huge waste of energy. Stop trying to make a better you or compare yourself to others. Robb challenges you to channel that energy into defining the seeds of greatness that are already in you. To Robb, this is what authenticity is really all about.

“We need to learn and be aware about the importance of going after the one.” - Robb Holman on focusing and being present

Final Four

  1. What have you done differently in your life to stand out?

“Live a passionate life. When you live a passionate life, you are going to catch other people on fire and allow them to live more passionate lives too.”

  1. What makes someone stand out in business or in life?

“Live a life of intentional gratitude. Have a positive attitude and outlook of yourself and others and of this world.”

  1. What’s the best advice you’ve received?

“You can only give when you got. Put yourself in a position to receive the good things in life the more of those powerful things you can give.”

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

“An individual who lived a life on purpose and helped others discover why they exist on the planet.”

Chris Dalzell is the owner of Shoreline Construction, a custom home builder in the Bluffton, SC area. His company has grown from remodeling homes to model homes and now as a custom home builder. He’s been motivated and influenced by Jesse to do business differently.

“We always had good customer service...We want to take it to the next level.” - Chris Dalzell

Working His Way Up Chris started his custom home building company at the bottom of the economy. In those tough years, he built zero homes. To keep the doors open he took all of the remodeling jobs he could.

“Execution, that’s what makes me most proud about my team.” - Chris Dalzell

With the help of family, Chris was finally able to build a model home. He grew a bit and partnered with a future client to build him a custom home with no fee. The client covered the construction costs then allowed Chris to show it for a year!

Chris Dalzell Focuses Over the last few years, he’s made a dramatic change to the customer experience. Chris continues to learn all he can and has always had a business coach, but through all of the training, he came home with too many new ideas and they would never get implemented.

“I’m investing back into my client.” -Chris Dalzell

Chris would have so much good stuff to work with but no idea where to start. He heard Jesse speak and hammering home to focus, focus, focus. When Chris returned home, he decided to pick one thing and focus on that as a whole team.

Finishing the House is Not the End Upon his return to the office, he sat with his team of 15 and they brainstormed. Chris was under the impression that once the house closes the job is complete. A team member piped in said that that is just where his work begins.

Chris knew he wanted to focus on the client and it was time to brainstorm again. He invited his teams’ spouses to the profit sharing dinner. His goal was to get input on what a great customer experience would look like to them.

Final Four 1. What have you done differently in your life to stand out?

“I want to create a unique business, I want to be different.”

  1. What makes someone stand out in business or in life?

“You have to be different than the competition. Sit down with your team and have them be a part of it. Empowerment is everything.”

  1. What’s the best advice you’ve received?

“Create a vision. Creating a vision for my company and our team. To sit down and figure out our core values. Do you really use those to filter through the decisions you make in your life.”

  1. How do you want to be remembered?

“A great friend, husband, father, Christian and man.”

“If you want a different life, you must be a different person” - Ben Hardy

Keys to Business Done Differently Ben views business as developing mastery in whatever you are doing but it is also about investing in yourself and investing in relationships. When you invest in yourself the goal is to upgrade your subconscious mind to upgrade your mindset.

“Mixing worlds and mixing ideas, that’s where unique connections come from.” - Ben Hardy

When you invest in relationships, it's about creating closeness with the right mentors. It’s about giving your skills to the right people. If you invest in yourself and in relationships, you’ll upgrade your environment.

A Volatile Household Ben’s parents divorced when he was 11 and their divorce was rough. Addiction is not genetic, it’s the product of pain and trauma. The divorce crushed Ben’s dad and sent him into a tailspin of drug addiction. His single mom did what she could but his environment was volatile.

After barely graduating high school, Ben found himself sitting around playing video games all day. Just to get out, at the age of 19 he started running. Short distances at first then longer and longer runs in the middle of the night.

Running for Clarity

Running gave Ben an escape from the triggers of home. He was able to escape and find some clarity and figure out what he wanted to do with himself. Ben made a decision to remove himself from his volatile environment.

Ben joined a mission to get away. Over two years time he found a new identity. As soon as he left he felt empowered to be anything he wanted to be. He went from playing video games all day to working very hard and giving his time and attention to other people.

Darren Jacklin is a world-class professional speaker, corporate trainer, investor and philanthropist. He’s gone from his childhood business, ‘Rent-A-Kid’ and today he owns private islands. Darren opens up with Jesse about his tumultuous youth, eventual homelessness, near-death experiences and how he’s overcome those obstacles to be where he is today.

“Life lessons are blessings in disguise.” - Darren Jacklin

Darren Jacklin Proving Himself Darren has always felt the need to prove his self-worth to others. He was driven internally by his ego and arrogance to really strive to be something better. He was put down by the school system and labeled by people as crazy.

“I took massive action...I knocked on doors and learned how to cold call. That built my self-confidence, getting rejected.” - Darren Jacklin

His first steps were to see a therapist, hire coaches and join a mastermind group. Darren had to take an inside look at himself and determine if he was an attractive person because the person you are attracts success.

School vs. Life Experiences It wasn’t about going to school to be a successful person. It was about the journal of his journey that got him to where he was. Today schools teach you to create a resume or curriculum vitae (CV) as your means to landing a job.

“Success is not something you go out into the world and pursue; success is something you attract by something you become.” -Darren Jacklin

In the real world, companies do their due diligence. They research candidates online. They look at your public profiles on the various social media platforms. They want to know what type of a human being your.

It’s surprising to know that if you have a large following, companies look at you as a good candidate. You become their brand ambassador to your followers and connections.

What is the greatest experience you have had so far wearing your yellow tuxedo and hat?

“It was when I proposed to my wife in front of a sold-out stadium, in the yellow tuxedo. I stopped the game in the middle of the game in the eighth inning. I dropped to a knee in front of 4000 people. I had the ring inside a baseball...she said yes and fireworks go off in the stadium and we delayed the game for like 25 minutes. The players were wondering if they were ever going to play again. No matter how many sellouts and wins, that moment I will never forget.

Final Four What have you done differently in your life to stand out?

Achieving massive action. Getting attention in a way that is serving perspective. Instead of thinking what is in it for me, I try to find how I can add value.”

What makes someone stand out in business or in life?

“You’re either memorable or forgettable. So be a go-getter. Build personal relationships.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

“Set goals and write out a plan”

How do you want to be remembered?

“Someone who cared and someone who made a difference and someone who pays the rent through philanthropy and humanitarian services.”

Pat Mussieux is an award-winning author, coach and speaker. For four years in a row, she’s captivated her audiences to be named the Stevie winner as Female Entrepreneur of the Year in Canada. Pat helps entrepreneurs go from overwhelm to over quota by setting goals and cultivating relationships.

“Every entrepreneur needs a coach, no one can do this alone.” - Pat Mussieux

Goal Setting Pat works backward for goal setting since most entrepreneurs don’t know how to set a goal. She asks her clients to ask what they are tolerating now. Is it a messy house, a closet full of clothes that don’t fit or a messy car?

“Feed yourself first” - Pat Mussieux

Reverse it! Commit to making your bed every morning, develop the habit and move on. You develop a number one success habit. The first hour of every day should focus on revenue-generating activities for yourself.

Feed Yourself First Pat Mussieux has 6 non-negotiables every day to take care of herself so she can, in turn, take care of her business. She feeds the body with food, hydration, exercise, meditation, she ends her day with her gratitude journal and gets 8-10 hours of sleep per night. These habits ensure she brings her best game to her business.

“You build the relations and the revenue will take care of itself.” - Jesse Cole

Revenue Generating Activities Gratitude and appreciation go a long way when you are cultivating contacts and friends and clients. Pat sends thank you notes. She connects with key leaders on social media after events or connections. Pat shares feedback of what she learned and how she is going to implement that knowledge.

Revenue Generating Events There’s a right way and a wrong way to plan and promote an event. It happens a lot, you create an event and promote the heck out of it and only a few people come. There are so many events out there but unless it’s exciting and fresh there can be event fatigue.

Final Four What have you done differently in your life to stand out?

“Be true to myself. I have no fear of speaking about my fears, I’m genuine, I’m a risk taker and I am fun”

What makes someone stand out in business or in life?

“Be consistent. Too many entrepreneurs try one thing and then another. Pick one thing, get good at it and be consistent.”

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

“Lou Tice said it best, ‘If it’s to be it’s up to me.’”

How do you want to be remembered?

“I want to be remembered by my life’s mission statement, to come from truth, love more and build a community of love around me.”

KEY TAKEAWAYS

“You will get more things in life out of being nice than being a jerk”

How To delivery GREAT Customer Service:

  1. Return Your Phone Calls
  2. Return Your Emails
  3. Be on Time, Every Time
  4. Exceed Expectations (Overpromise, under deliver, has got to stop.)
  5. Communicate Effectively with Your Customers in a language That They Understand

“Mistakes are bound to happen, it’s what happens next that really counts.”

“Customer Service…I’m going to deliver a year and a half of service where you’re going to get 4 hours of service from my competitor.”

“Most people feel like nice is a sign of weakness, and nice is one of those character flaws that you have, and nice makes you a yes man. I really do feel like being nice has differentiated me from catching people in the act of doing something right, as opposed to catching them in the act of doing something wrong.”

“A lot of people tend to get bogged down in the failure and let it hurt their ego…just keep moving.

FINAL FOUR

What have you done differently in your life to stand out?

“I’ve returned my calls, my emails. I’ve been on time, every time, I’ve exceeded expectations, and I reach out and communicate with my customers…. That’s the Nice Guy 30. It’s 5 steps, 30 days, easiest thing ever.”

What makes someone stand out in business or in life?

“Return your calls, return your emails, be on time, every time, exceed expectations, and reach out and communicate with your customers.”

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

Dorie Clark is a marketing strategy consultant, professional speaker, and frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review. Recognized as a “branding expert” by the Associated Press, Fortune, and Inc. magazine, she is the author of Entrepreneurial You, Reinventing You, and Stand Out, which was named the #1 Leadership Book of 2015 by Inc. magazine and one of the Top 10 Business Books of the Year by Forbes.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

“The biggest lesson that I draw from it…It’s really hard for anyone, to in the moment, understand the macro forces at play…Change can happen overnight, and we are not able to see it at the time. So, we need to be as resilient as possible to prepare for these unexpected situations. And be willing and excited to reinvent ourselves.”

“As we have all seen in a lot of different areas of our lives, clearing out the stuff that doesn’t work makes room for the stuff that does.”

“I value trying to bring people together in a way that makes them feel comfortable and included…Community building is really important, but a lot of people do it in a way that is exclusive.”

“What are the assumptions that people are making in my field and what circumstances might have changed that would alter or impact those assumptions.”

“Whatever you are, be a good one.”

“I’m a big believer in what gets measured gets done.”

“We need to think how to scale our efforts. How to do it once and share it with the world. If you want your ideas to have maximum impact, we need to figure out how to make our voices go louder and further, with the same amount of effort. If we can scale our ideas, that is where we can start to make a difference.”

“The framework for how you can build a following around your ideas: First you build a network, then you build an audience, then you build a community.”

“Carve out more white space because that’s where ideas grow.”

FINAL FOUR

What have you done differently in your life to stand out?

I’ve been out as a gay person since I was 14. If you can just be like, ‘Yeah, that’s my deal…’, that kind of sends a message to other people too that they can be themselves.

What makes someone stand out in business or in life?

I’m a huge proponent of content creation…. One of the most important things you can do if you want to become a recognized expert, is you have to create content. Otherwise people literally just won’t know what your ideas are. And so, therefore, they can’t tell if you are an expert that should be recognized.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

Not getting an office.

How do you want to be remembered?

As somebody who helped other people figure out how to crack the code to get their best ideas heard. I would really like to improve society by getting talented people to contribute and to have their ideas appreciated and recognized rather than just the people with the loudest voices in the room.

Jeffrey Shaw is the host of the popular business podcast Creative Warriors, a featured storyteller on The Moth, and a nationally acclaimed keynote speaker. He speaks at creative and business conferences on the topics of marketing, branding, customer relations, and sales. For more than three decades, Jeffrey, a.k.a. the Lingo Guy has been one of the most sought-after portrait photographers in the U.S. and uses this honed intuition developed as a photographer to teach entrepreneurs how to attract their ideal customers by speaking their Secret Language.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

“We’re going to look at business not only differently, but we’re going to look at it upside down; because the way the rest of the world is doing business, probably isn’t working for you.”

“By nature of being a creative warrior, also what I call an uncommon entrepreneur, you need to do business differently.”

“99% of businesses are built backward in the first place. The way most people go into business is they have a great idea, they’re excited about their idea, they build the business, and then they spend the rest of their lives trying to fit people into that business. Where the right way to build a business, is what I refer to in Lingo as customer-centric.”

“Customer-centric is knowing who your ideal customer is, what their secret language is, and then building a business for them that speaks to them.”

“The validation paradox is that while we’re trying to find ourselves we ultimately realize that we need others”

“One of the greatest advantages of working with your ideal customer is you ultimately find out where you belong, you end up working with people who see more in you than you see in yourself.”

“Grow a community, not a database.”

“Live your goals without your goals becoming your life.”

“Step 1: Know the perspective of your ideal customer. You define your ideal customer not by deciding who they are, but by first understanding who you are best for.”

“Step 2: Create an environment of familiarity. Because familiarity stands out!”

“Step 3: Present your business in style. Style is a decision maker…we make decisions all day long based on if a style resonates with us or not. When you know your ideal customer, you can create a style that stops them in their tracks.”

“Step 4: Pricing creates perception. With pricing, you can decide what perception you want people to have of your business depending on how high or low you price your service/product.”

“Step 5: Speak to your ideal customer with the words you choose. Words are powerful. Marketing words stand out. One of the processes that I teach in the book is a ‘Stand Out Statement’… 3-7 words that let the world know, let’s your ideal customer know, what you stand for, how you’re a fit for their business and what you can do for them.”

“What I find as the most powerful way of standing out is ‘What is your unique perception about what you do?’…I believe you stand out by being able to convey to the world what your unique perspective is on what you do.”

FINAL FOUR

What have you done differently in your life to stand out?

Express my vulnerability…I do believe in being vulnerable in its right time. I don’t believe in being vulnerable if I’m in any angst and pain. Then it’s too easy to come out as whining and dramatic. But I do open up…And it helps me stand out because it allows my ideal customer o know that I’m with them.

What makes someone stand out in business or in life?

You gotta own it. “You gotta rock what ya mama gave ya.” What makes you different, makes you marketable. And then own it, embody it! I find that the biggest gap in success is that people are 60% into their ownership. Just BE it! When you know what makes you different, own it 120%... And it doesn’t have to be loud, it has to be clear.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

No one is going to take care of your life as much as you do.

How do you want to be remembered?

I want to be remembered by my kids. And I dedicated Lingo to my kids: “I hope this book gives you something to remember me by more than just my waffles.”

Mark Sanborn, CSP, CPAE, is president of Sanborn & Associates, Inc., an idea studio dedicated to developing leaders in business and in life. Mark is an international bestselling author (Fred Factor, Fred Factor 2.0, and The Encore Effect) and noted expert on leadership, team building, customer service, and change.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

“Cause is not correlation. Just because ten great companies have a gym, doesn’t mean having a gym makes you a great company…So what I try to do, rather than looking for those specifics, I try to be principle-based. Principles don’t change. A principle’s true across time, it’s true across culture and it’s true across context.”

“Communication is about being understood and it’s about understanding. That will never change.”

“Isn’t life not a thousand times too short to bore ourselves?”

“Expectation without education equals frustration.”

“Fred had a simple job, but he brought so much artistry and craft to it that it was amazing…. And what I realized is if Fred could bring that kind of artistry to something as redundant as putting mail in a box, then you and I have no excuse. We all have a bigger canvas to work with and it’s not about the job you have, but how you do the job.”

“The best way to create more Fred’s in your organization is twofold. One is, recognize the ones you’ve already got…. The second thing is to demonstrate it. Be the role model. You can’t demand…what you’re going to do is alienate them.”

“Lord make me a simple man in a complex world…Simple is good.”

“Literally, don’t tower over people. If you don’t want to intimidate [your employees] and you come into their office and they're seated, don’t stand over their desk. Either sit down or take a walk with them so you are literally on the same level.”

“When you don’t see much meaning in what you do, you won’t bring much value to what you do.”

“I’m trying to find new focal points that are the intersection really between 3 things. What I can do (skill set), what I like to do, and what’s profitable…I want to make sure what I’m doing isn’t just enjoyable, that’s a hobby. I want to make sure what I’m doing isn’t just a skillset, that’s a job. But that what I’m doing is profitable, but literally and psychically.”

“I pay my trainer to create resistance. If you don’t encounter resistance you’re not changing and you’re not growing. That’s one of the first clues that you’re getting better when you buck up against resistance.”

“You get passion out of 4 buckets. One is your passion for what you do. Another is your passion about why you do…And then there’s passion about how you do it… The final trump card is to be passionate about who you do it for.”

FINAL FOUR

What have you done differently in your life to stand out?

I think I’ve always been big on preparation. I think that most battles or games are won off the field.

What makes someone stand out in business or in life?

A decided point of view. A definitive point of view. It’s well thought out… Moynihan once said, “We’re all entitled to our own opinions, but we’re not entitled to our own facts.” So I think to stand out in business, you need to be well informed so that your point of view is based in reality, or based in facts so that it’s clear what you stand for and what’s important to you.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

Spend less than you make.

How do you want to be remembered?

As a guy who wanted to make a positive difference because he loved people. And because he loved people, he led. And when he led, he served…But I think it begins with how you treat the people who are closest to you and that consistently outflows to how you treat the people you encounter every day.

Steve is the visionary founder of Bluefish: the world’s first luxury concierge that delivers the highest level of personalized travel, transportation, and cutting-edge entertainment services to corporate executives, celebrities, professional athletes, and other discerning individuals interested in living life to its fullest.

TAKEAWAYS

“Surround yourself with good people and you’re a combination of those. If all your friends are d***heads, guess which you are?”

“I was trying to be a value to this group…so that I could then ask for a job, but before you knew it I became the guy to go to when you need travel access, events or maybe something that they couldn’t get…I was their guy.”

“Never ask a question that can end up in a no. No one likes to be sold or bought. NOBODY. And the richer you are, the further from that…SO you have to get them into the passion and then ask for the next steps. ‘What needs to happen next?’”

“The good thing about a win-win is you can milk that cow forever…If you create a win-win there’s value in that.”

“People don’t want what they can afford, they want what they can’t get.”

“The key element of exclusivity is it breeds desire and desire has no intelligence behind it. If you can get someone to desire something, you’re working on a different part of their brain cells. And they’re not working on facts now, they’re not working on reason, desire overtakes all of that.”

“If someone says no, I’m asking the wrong person. No is not a roadblock.”

“You know so many people don’t ask questions now? …How can you be amazing if you don’t know the bloody details?”

FINAL FOUR

What have you done differently in your life to stand out?

I refuse to be anybody else.

What makes someone stand out in business or in life?

Stop trying to copy everyone else. I notice that when people start doing an internet business, they buy a hoodie and a pair of pants. They try to be the perception, the look, the feel, the vibe. NO! Be You. It’s what identifies you as being unique to anyone else. Unlearn the words humiliation and embarrassment. Thy don’t exist! They don’t exist. No one ever drowned by falling in the water. They drowned by staying there. So stop worrying about anyone else, stop worrying about falling over. Just keep going.”

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

“No one ever drowned by falling in the water, they drowned by staying there.”

How do you want to be remembered?

“He did what he said he was gonna do.”

“What I found out is that feedback gave me two things: #1, it validated that I did a good job and could ask for more business. And #2, after asking for feedback, my dad said, ‘find out what tricks they liked the most…my goal was to find out what tricks they didn’t notice and to pull those out.”

“When hiring, Hyvee asks potential hires to come to the store a little before the interview, walk around the store and take note of what they think can be improved. It’s a great way to get feedback.”

“How do I make it easy for my customer to buy from me…Why are my [products] different, why is my service different?”

“I think no matter what industry you’re in, just take a look at the friction points. How can you make the process easier for the customer?”

“The best stat in the world comes from customer behavior. Do they come back? And if so, how often? That’s the stat you want to measure.”

“Fine in business is an acronym.

F stands for Fake smile.

I stands for Insincere feedback.

N stands for Never coming back.

E stands for an Emotionless response.”

“Bud said to me, if you’re going to get into the speaking business, your job isn’t doing the speech, it’s getting the speech…In every business, you think ‘We’re in the manufacturing business!’ Well, you may be in the manufacturing business, but if you don’t have customers buying whatever it is you manufacture, you’re not in business.”

“On your tombstone, it’s not your born date or your death date that’s important… what’s important is what happened in the dash.

Businessman and startup coach, Anthony Witt has helped many individuals transition from being a full-time employee to becoming an entrepreneur. He thoroughly enjoys helping people move from simply existing to truly living. Having personally made the transition from employee to entrepreneur more than one time, Anthony has learned how to navigate the important areas of life to live a life of purpose.

Anthony currently holds interest and leadership roles in a residential commercial real estate flipping company, a school fundraising company, personal mastermind groups and an individual coaching program as well as a marriage enrichment company that he runs with his wife. He has also begun to hold mentor, leadership, and equity positions with clients.

“I want to talk to the people who are listening…I want to serve the people that are here.”

“I think it’s all about testing…You gotta figure that out. Who do I like to work with, who do I enjoy being around, and who can I really add value to?”

“If you are a solo-entrepreneur or even a small team of 2 or 3, you have got to get out to conferences…You can’t be in business for yourself and not do that.”

“If you never leave life where you are, you’ll never live the life you are destined for.”

“Until you have something worth dying for, you really don’t have something worth living for.”

“If you’re just stagnant where you’re at, you’re never getting there. You’re never getting towards that life that you want to live. Because you’re just existing where you’re at…If you’re not moving forward, you’re going backward.”

“Next time you meet someone, try asking: ‘How are you making the world a better place?’ Rather than the normal ‘What do you do?’.”

“That beautiful blend, that convergence of money, talent, and passion.”

“You can’t pretend to be something and do a good job in doing it. You have to find that authentic place to really do well, what you’re doing.”

“I was raised in an environment where your word is your bond. If your word isn’t any good, dig a hole and push me in, I’m done.”

“Any healthy organization has change. There’s no healthy organization that is stagnant. If it is, then it starts to deteriorate. So, change is evidence of growth. Change is evidence of being alive.”

“If somebody stays with you out of a sense of obligation, you’ll both end up resenting it.”

“Continual learning is the key to continual living. If you stop learning, you have effectively stopped living.”

“I don’t recoil from fear…I don’t mind fear being in the presence. If I’m going to go on a trip, I want fear to be in the back seat, not in the driver’s seat.”

“Be different. Don’t worry about being first…be different.”

115: Mike Michalowicz –

“I’m a huge fan of fear…I believe that anyone who starts a business, embrace the fear. Don’t live in it. Because over time it brings about stress. But fear will wake you up at 5 in the morning and it will have you working until 5 the next morning.”

“It’s very hard to remember specific conversations, all we remember is emotion… So a lot of the stuff that we experience is instantly forgotten, it’s just the end of emotion”

“[Unlike on shows like Shark Tank and The Profit] The reality is that 99.9% of businesses never get an investment outside of the founders and the family.”

“You must find the profit within yourself! And that’s my investment, giving them the knowledge and the mentorship, but not the money. Seeking someone else to save us is the fallacy of so many businesses and I see it now more than ever.”

“The Profit First Formula is really simple: Sales-Profit=Expenses”

“Profit isn’t the whole focus [of my business] it’s the first focus…Profit is the foundation of a healthy business.”

“Successful people don’t look for other’s approval in their success and therefore don’t need to show it off.”

“There’s a truism of life in poker. When someone starts bluffing, that means they have a weak hand.”

“If you want people to come to you as a coach, if you want them to come to you to buy this product… you have to understand what they’re motivated by, you have to understand the way their mind works.”

“Today, a brand is a crafted experience. It is a language that you speak…it is a relationship that hopefully leads to an audience that are going to be your brand ambassadors.”

“You don’t have to have a brand to have a successful business….but if you want to create an Apple type of experience, [then you’re going to need a specific and concise message].”

“How people do anything is how they do everything.”

Jared’s formula for how to find your why: “Imagine that years from now you’re business is wildly successful and the news is interviewing you because you’re such a big success. What are you telling them? What’s happened there? What’s the brand culture like? The family that runs it? The staff that runs it? What do people experience? Are they happy?...What do you want your impact to be?”

“Branding, in general, has a lot to do with care. Period.”

“If you want to create a great brand, build it in hopes of creating that experience every time for the customer.”

“You don’t even get a seat at the table. You have to create attention first…How do [you] get people’s attention, hold it, and then (here’s the clincher) do something good with it?”

“People will forget the things that you did. They’ll forget the things that you said. But they’ll always remember the way that you made them feel. Maya Angelou.”

“The biggest problem people have is that they only do marketing when they have no sales. And then as soon as they have sales, they get busy and they stop doing marketing. You have to put together some kind of systematic marketing process where you’re always doing marketing even when you’re busy with sales so your pipeline always stays full.”

“A lot of folks want to build this great product and then think if I build this great product [customers] will come…it just doesn’t happen. You have to go to customers and see if they’ll actually buy something…I try to convince a customer to buy something first and then I’ll build it.”

The ABC Strategy from Barry’s new book Small Business Hacks: 100 Shortcuts To Success - How to get a potential client to respond to your emails:

“Please respond A, B, or C. A – I’m busy, please get back to me in a month. B – I’m no longer interested. C – Call me right away.”

“What small business owners are really bad at is figuring out how much cash they have on hand.”

“Your small business plan should fit on the back of a napkin. You should be able to summarize what your business is all about, what pain you solve, and who you solve that pain for…because people will pay more for painkillers than they will for vitamins.”

“Somewhere along the line, the universe tells you that you have to reinvent yourself, because what you’ve been doing for a really long time isn’t working.”

“We spend a third of our time trying to help other people obtain their goals and dreams and as a result of that, we’re twice as successful financially as we’ve ever been.”

“Everybody wants to hold their cards close to their vest…but when you share, here’s what happens: other people want to be around you. Then they want to introduce you to other people.”

“There are givers and takers and you’re one or the other. I want to be the giver. I want to be the guy when he walks in, the room lights up.”

“Do both. I call and ask favors from people, but it’s not the only time I call them.”

“Life is so fun...when you do it right.”

“Nobody’s gonna sit around and talk about your failures and successes and I’ve learned to get over that…Fear missing an opportunity more than you fear failure.”

“You’ve gotta double down on what’s working…and even when it’s working right, eliminate 15% that’s on your plate.”

“We need more implementation. We got enough wisdom and knowledge, what you need to do is get your butt out there and get it in gear and work!”

“You gotta always be in the game!”

“If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.”

“I want to own the money, I don’t want the money to own me.”

“Spineating: The human tendency to speak without thinking.” – Dr. Murlon Dye

“Organizations work, or don’t, because of great leaders…who are thinking about, ‘How do I help my team reconnect with its purpose?”

“Change doesn’t fail because we don’t know how to do change management. It doesn’t fail because of faulty management, it fails because of faulty leadership.”

“It’s never about the knowledge. It’s always about the emotional readiness to do something. It’s about that push to get there. And what pushes us? Crisis or pain or a really big opportunity.”

“Sometimes the promise of changing the world turns out to be just another job doing things.”

“Everybody says today you have to find your why…I’m not against having your why, I’m not against finding your purpose, I’m not against having passion, but I also know that some days you just gotta go do the work. Because sometime your passion will go away.”

“Ask me questions that will lead to new opportunities…The quality of the answers that we get in our life are in direct proportion to the quality of the questions that we ask.”

“We often define ourselves by our past, not by our potential.”

“A lot of companies are saying, ‘I want to have an excellent culture’. I look at it differently. I want you to have a culture of excellence.”

“The middle of the organization is where change goes to die.”

“The riches of your life are the riches of your relationships.”

“My grandfather gave me the worst business advice ever…Choose who you drink with because you can’t choose who you work with.”

“I think that’s such a false thing. Work-life balance. You don’t segment your life…Your work supports your life, it’s not that your life supports your work.”

“What you have to do is acknowledge your past, but don’t let it define your future.”

“The goal is not home runs, it’s base hits and walks when you can get them”

“Once light hits something, suddenly the monster isn’t as scary.”

“Self-awareness is so tough with all of the distractions in this world…and sometimes you have to do stuff that forces you to be still and listen. Because the only person in the world you can change is yourself.”

“People have had their core values just collapse and that’s why we’re facing all the issues that we are right now… It’s because we don’t have core values of honesty and integrity. We don’t do the right thing. We’re doing the convenient thing and what serves us best instead of what serves others best and adds value to their lives. And that’s where success comes from”

“Words are not enough. You gotta live it every single day in the way that you provide service and in your products.”

“You already have a brand. Your brand is what your customers say about you behind your back!”

“I realized what makes me happiest is me doing my best…I know that if my goal is to be the very best I can possibly be, then I will bring excellence to the marketplace and if I serve others through that excellence, that’s how I take care of me.”

“I just always figured, why not me? Nothing I was ever really willing to try to do, was going to kill me. Nobody ever died asking for the sale.”

“Here’s what I discovered, people don’t listen to what you have to say, don’t even believe what you have to say. But they always listen to see if you believe what you say.”

“I don’t think you’re any good for anybody else until you’re first good for yourself.”

“Dreams don’t come true, plans come true…. I’m not going to invest in a dream, I’ll invest in a plan.”

“The biggest enemy of success is success.”

“If you really are searching out somebody to work with you or mentor you…know that you have to offer them something”

“One of the keys to wealth…[figure] out how to leverage other people’s markets and other people’s knowledge. I think that’s when we will all win.”

“Being memorable makes you stand out in business and in life…Never go any place where they won’t remember you were there.”

Tim Connor, world-renowned speaker for the past 44 years and author of over 80 books, shares his tactics for standing out, selling corporate executives, and earning their repeat business for decades.

Key Takeaways: “What I’ve learned in sales and in business is that if you don’t get under people’s skin, if you don’t create some discomfort, they’re not going to change anything.”

“If people aren’t engaged in anything…if they’re not engaged in the process, they are really not there mentally and they’re not there emotionally, so they might as well not be there physically either.”

“When did you change something in your life? … I will guarantee it was because you saw something, heard something, somebody said something to you that made you feel uncomfortable about the status quo.”

“I’d rather not make the sale because I was honest than to make the sale because I wasn’t honest and to live with those consequences long term.”

“People are replacing wisdom with information. They think that information will solve their problems.”

“You have to find creative ways to stand above or beyond the people who are doing the same thing you’re doing in your marketplace.”

“They could not have honest, face to face confrontations, and that relationship ended. What’s more important, political correctness, or surviving in your business.”

“You’re not on this journey alone. As long as you think you can do it by yourself, you’re making a serious mistake.”

About The Guest: Tim Connor has been a full-time speaker and trainer since 1973. He’s the author of over 80 books, including bestsellers like Soft Sell, 91 Mistakes Smart Sells People Make, Your First Year In Sales, and Life Is Short. Tim has spoken in 21 foreign countries, and given over 4500 presentations since 1965!
