Fort Zumwalt designed the FORTiTUDE podcast to bring you a new style of conversation about our schools. It's our hope to bring you important news, interesting conversation and a few laughs.
Meet Lexi Lloyd, a senior at South High and a firm believer that the best way to keep learning is to keep trying new things. It’s one reason she offered to take over the FORTiTUDE podcast. As a member of multiple organizations and teams at school, she has seen many leadership styles and wondered, “How do you define leadership?” Criss-crossing the South High community, she found the answers from students and from staff and shares them in this Bulldog Student Takeover.

Equipping students with the math skills they'll need in the future means empowering them with the skills they need to be collaborative colleagues. Meet Heather Kreger and Amy Sand, math curriculum coordinators for #FZSD. Together with teachers they have built a bridge that connects how Kindergarteners talk about math to how 8th-graders talk about math and created a pathway that equips students to excel.

The three-time state champion girls soccer team sits down and shares stories of their camaraderie, their dedication and their resilience. Coach Leanne Sanders also gives a big shoutout to the families who have supported her players, many of whom started playing soccer before they were in Kindergarten. "If you really want to be successful -- at anything you do -- you have to be willing to put in the hours," she says.

People told Whittney Carter joining Mount Hope Elementary would feel like joining a family and, she says, those people were right. In her first year as principal she is settling into a new school, a new home and much more. "Relationships are what's most important," she says. "And together we'll figure it all out."

Throughout the 2022-2023 school year, Jennifer Waters, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. Paul Myers, Superintendent-Elect, have led the steering committee for the district's Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP). When a small group of committed people welcome others in to have difficult conversations it can mean big things for a community. That’s the story of FZEiAm, a club at East High working to bring students and staff together by celebrating what make them unique. It started with a celebration of unity, that grew into a pledge. More three quarters of students at East High signed a pledge to encourage inclusivity and celebrate other diversities within our school, Assistant Principal Josh Devlin says. “It’s the first thing kids see when they come into school. What an amazing environment if you are a new student, to come into a school and see: We celebrate this. We want you in here. We want to see this diversity in our school because that is what makes East High great. Meet Jaime Redding, Principal at Flint Hill Elementary. Built in 2016, Missouri law required that the school have a storm shelter that houses the entire school population, including staff, in case of severe weather. Meet Cara Furtwengler, Physical Education teacher at Pheasant Point Elementary. Hear how she’s brought the Winter Games to her O’Fallon, Mo, elementary school to connect students with the possibilities. Local manufacturers Dan Claypool of Merric Millwork and Seating and Dan Fitter of Quest Specialty Products are seeing firsthand what is being taught in Fort Zumwalt high schools. Their partnership with the district has brought high school apprentices to their facilities who are career ready. “A lot of times, they are pushing us,” Claypool says. Fort Zumwalt School District is a United States Department of Labor Certified Apprenticeship Program. Students in our Industrial Technology and Engineering program have the opportunity to gain a paying job, hands-on experience, high school credit, college credit and a nationally recognized certification while local manufactures such as Merric and Quest have the opportunity to show young people a lucrative career in modern manufacturing. Preparing Workforce 2030 means providing hands-on coursework rooted in collaboration and problem solving. Since it was first implemented in FZSD in 2014, Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses have brought high school students hands-on learning in computer science, health science and engineering that lead to college credit and an understanding of possible career pathways. Hear from an East High senior about how her four years of study in the Health and Biomedical strand have not only shaped her goals for the future, but how she takes on the work of each day. Special thanks to East High teacher Carrie Stowers for sharing what it means for a teacher to meet the PLTW challenge, and to Dr. Patrick Brown for some insight students and parents can use as they begin discussing class schedules for next school year.
The district opened its new 22,000-square foot Professional Development and Technology Center earlier this year. Made possible by voter approval of a no-tax-increased bond issue in 2018, the PDTC is home to the Curriculum and Instruction department, which also oversees professional development, as well as the Technology Department. Their mission: To explore new curriculum; To seek out new strategies and new techniques, To engage students in learning as they’ve never engaged before. Meet West High science teacher Melissa Bouquet and East High science teachers Joe Leibner and Tom Ogle. They are joined by K - 12 Science Curriculum Coordinator Anne Green to share their journey as Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors. In 2020 they, along with North High’s Nick Fisher, were among 28 teachers selected to participate in the NASA program through the SETI Institute. They brought what they learned back to their students, and are hoping to take flight this summer to complete their training.

Fort Zumwalt School District is a trauma-informed school district. In this episode of FORTiTUDE, Dr. Jerry Cox, a consulting psychologist with FZSD for 27 years, and Dr. Dede McCullough, Executive Director for Behavioral Support Services, explan how this initiative came to be, and how the district meets the needs of students and staff through this process.
Creating trauma-informed schools helps our staff and our community understand the prevalance of trauma in our children, the impact that it has on the development of the brain and on a child’s availability to learn.
“It’s best practices,” Dr. Cox says. “It’s what we do to help all kids learn better, and all teachers teach better and all parents to feel more connected to the school community.”
There are many layers to student safety, including keeping athletes safe at practice and in competition. Since the early 2000s South High alum Dr. Brandon Larkin has worked with Fort Zumwalt School District to evaluate and monitor concussion patients in five sports across the district. Tune in as Larkin, board certified in pediatrics and primary care sports medicine, explains how an athlete can appear to be better, but still need time to heal.
