One year ago I bought a microphone and decided to launch an experimental project called The Library Laura Podcast. We were about a month into the pandemic and I was unemployed and searching for what God would have me do next. Twelve months later, I've shared 52+ episodes, given and received tons of book recommendations, and talked to plenty of amazing people.

Then, a few years ago, Paul took his experience as a freelance audiobook narrator to start telling personalized stories through his business Made To Order Audio. Welcome to this week’s dose of book recommendations, library love, and literary enthusiasm! You may remember my sister, Rachel, who was our guest on Episodes 8 and 9. Rachel is currently in graduate school at Notre Dame pursuing her doctorate in analytical chemistry. She’s the perfect co-host today for this great interview with Dr. Stephanie Ryan. Dr. Ryan the author of “Let’s Learn About Chemistry” which is a board book designed to help parents introduce basic chemistry concepts to their children through the “one of these things is not like the other” game. She is on Instagram @letslearnaboutscience. Stephanie has a strong background in chemistry and biology and enjoys applying her background to develop superior educational products. She is also interested in how mathematics and science intertwine. She earned her Ph.D. in Learning Sciences with a focus on Chemistry Education.

Today's guest on The Library Laura Podcast is Lori Orlinsky, a three-time author of picture books for children that teach important lessons. She has written these books to fill gaps she found in kids books after her own children experienced things and she went looking for a book to help her as a parent address those topics. For example, her first book, Being Small (Isn’t So Bad After All) was inspired by her daughter’s experience of being the shortest kid in her class and getting called named and bullied because of it. She’s got on to write books about telling the truth and coping with pet loss as well. We swapped recommendations for read-aloud books for kids, as well as some grown-up books Lori might enjoy for her own pleasure reading.

Welcome to this week's dose of book recommendations, library love, and literary enthusiasm. Today’s guest on The Library Laura Podcast is Carol Cujec, co-author of a new middle grade book called Real. She wrote the book with Peyton Goddard, whose own life is the inspiration for Charity's story. Peyton is autistic, and for the first 22 years of her life had no reliable way to communicate. She now communicates with what’s called supportive typing, and one of the first sentences she ever typed was “I am intelligent.” She went on to graduate from college as valedictorian. Peyton's memoir, the first book that Carol and Peyton co-authored, is called I Am Intelligent. The writing team has adapted Peyton's story for a middle-grade audience in their newest book, Real, which was published in February 2021. This is an amazing story of the power of love and the need for inclusion for all people. This is a book I won’t soon forget. I am excited to be able to share this conversation with Carol, as well as a few questions and answers with Peyton.
