Conversations with women over 50 who have raised their voices, met challenges head on, and redesigned their lives to a one they love.
Hey Redesigners and welcome to another episode of Women Over 50 - A Life Redesigned. I am your host Shelly Drymon and this is the podcast where I have conversations with women over 50 who are in the world doing amazing things, and busting through the stereotypes of what it means to be a woman over 50 today. My guest today is Susan Haworth. Susan has been providing counseling, coaching and consulting for four decades with a host of clients and customers in a variety of settings on both the East and West Coasts. You can find out more about Susan and grab here book on her https://www.cambioscoaching.com/ (website. ) After receiving her B.A. in Psychology and M.Ed. in Community Counseling, Susan worked in mental health facilities in Atlanta, GA providing counseling to adult substance abusers and adolescents and their families. Taking a sabbatical from direct service, Susan segued her career into managing social service programs. When the 80’s hit, Susan headed back to school and earned an M.S. in Management which she parlayed into a corporate training and consulting business. As the principal of her consulting practice, Susan provided communication skills training programs and individual coaching for Fortune 500 companies and their managers. Being in the epicenter of technology (the San Francisco Bay Area), Susan seized another opportunity to reinvent herself. In 2017, she decided to go world-wide by providing coaching and consulting via Skype. Cambios (changes in Spanish) Coaching and Consulting seemed like the ideal moniker under which to operate. Changes are what Susan’s life has been about as she moved from coast to coast; married, divorced and remarried; wrangled with single parenting and step-parenting; changed careers; made new friends and continues to turn things inside out. There is a lot more to grief than just 5 stages… Silke developed the unique and proven “Grief To Love” framework from her experience of supporting bereaved women and presented it at the 2019 AHA world conference to an international audience of Psychotherapists, Counsellors, Psychologists and Hypnotherapists. Four years ago Silke developed an even deeper understanding of grief when she lost her only sister to cancer and supported her parents and brother-in-law through that loss. After not having seen her parents due to Covid travel restrictions for two years, Silke got the 4am phone call no one wants to get to get on the flight nobody wants to be on. Only ten days after her therapy dog passed, Silke’s dad had suddenly died. Silke truly knows what grief feels like and what bereaved parents and widows go through. She’s had a hidden love affair with silver hair for as long as she can remember prompted by brushing her grandmother’s white hair and stints as a CNA in a skilled nursing facility that gave her an appreciation for the wisdom that comes with aging. She’d get lost in the stories of travel and history shared by the women with silver strands. But, in 1980 something… allowing your silvers to come through was taboo. In 2012, Robin combined her love for wine and connecting women together over shared passions into an event planning business that led to the creation of Sip On Life, a magazine where she shared stories of women winemakers around the globe. She’d found her calling in connecting women together through written word. By 2018 she was growing tired of being told she had to keep dyeing her hair to stay young and relevant. She started searching for inspiration and when she couldn’t find exactly what she was looking for, her passion for her new found silvers and writing led to the creation of Tangled Silver Magazine. The magazine launched January 2021 as a love letter to the silver haired community. The response was magical causing Robin to throw caution to the wind and lean fully into creating a magazine to embrace, celebrate and inspire women around the globe embracing their silver and the silver lifestyle that comes with it. Through TSMAG and the movement she created #iamsilverbeauty she’s breaking barriers with a message for women. Embrace you. Celebrate her. Be inspired. She’s inspired by the women she meets daily stepping into their silvers and defining their own definition of beautiful and is grateful for the She-Pack writers that contribute quarterly to make Tangled Silver Magazine a magazine by and for women around the globe. Robin lives in Colorado with her husband and fur babies. Her free time is spent lost in the mountains, playing superheros with her grandsons or enjoying a nice sipping tequila. And, if you ask her what is the best compliment she’s received since letting her silver strands shine…”my grandsons think I have Elsa hair. It doesn’t get any more magical than that!”

Today's guest is Neeahtima Dowdy is the creator and host of We’re Not Dead Yet: Women Rocking their Next Chapter, a YouTube series for and about women over 40, 50, 60 and beyond who are reinventing themselves, discovering new talents, and dreaming new dreams. https://www.youtube.com/c/WereNotDeadYetWomenRockingNextChapter (Her YouTube series is fantastic and I highly recommend you go give it a watch! ) Neeahtima grew up singing and dancing, and as a teenager was an Apprentice to the Dallas Ballet. But having been raised by a single mom, “starving artist” was not an attractive career, so she chose to pursue another track and was a first-generation college student. After earning a Bachelor of Journalism and working in both reporting and public relations in college, she enjoyed a career in a myriad of roles: writing, editing, corporate communications, branding, political campaigns, and finally a VP at a public affairs consulting firm. Marriage and motherhood then took center stage, as she raised three busy red-headed children and managed the family enterprise. She, nevertheless, continued to use her skills in ways outside the family, from founding a mom’s group, to serving in church leadership, to creating and teaching a middle school musical theater group. An habitual do-it-yourselfer, Neeahtima is known to design and sew an evening gown, refinish furniture, install landscaping, or build out an entire unfinished room. After a couple of decades of taking pride ensuring that others flourish, Neeahtima is seizing this next chapter to dream her own new dreams and inspire other women to do likewise. Why it matters: Women’s wisdom and ability to see the bigger picture is a powerful force. They often see things in a moral context — and that’s a vital balance to the competitive systems that tend to drive too many decisions. Key Messages: How can women push back against systematic gaslighting, pushbacks, and denial? By learning to take the space and time to be heard. There are ways to do it without direct confrontation that are powerful and effective. https://annettesimmons.com/ (Annette Simmons) a keynote speaker, consultant, and author of four books, including The Story Factor, listed in The 100 Best Business Books of All Time. Jane Taylor was a little girl, her mother owned the motorcycle shop, Honda of Ann Arbor. Motorcycles colored her childhood until she and her family moved to Northern Michigan and later to Vermont. At the age of 16, she went to Bard College at Simon’s Rock where she earned a BA in Literature and Music History. She’s been a cook for a baroque orchestra, a sculptor’s assistant, a resume writer, and a yoga teacher. She started (and stopped) her own welding shop. She has repaired farm equipment under the blazing sun on the Fourth of July and decorated cakes resembling the Palace of Versailles on Bastille Day. Writing has always been her foundation. After a forty-year hiatus, she started motorcycling again when her son graduated from college. To celebrate his achievement and fill her impending empty nest, Jane, her husband, and son took a 10,000-mile motorcycle trek across the United States; this adventure is the subject of “Spirit Traffic: A Mother’s Journey of Self-discovery and Letting Go.” She lives, writes, and rides in Hinesburg, Vermont with her husband John, a yoga teacher. If you have a limiting belief, beliefs that is putting the pedal on the brake, you know, it's like having the pedal on, on fast forward and went on the brake. It just doesn't work. Right. That's the first concept. Then the second concept for me is like a subconscious mind is like that huge warehouse. Where everything is stored, everything you've heard, you've seen, you felt you intuition everything, the red flags, but that never necessarily all came to your conscious mind because you would go crazy if everything would come to your conscious mind.~ Janylene The beliefs about change are very important. So as a society, we carry beliefs about age. We carry beliefs. Change. Previously I had walked from the fridge to the sofa and back multiple times. I considered camping to be a loathsome pursuit. Hiking was something one did for a few hours before rounding off the day with a hot chocolate and an even hotter bath. I came back to the UK, did my quarantine, then set about writing a book about my endeavors. Memorable Quotes "We put ourselves down instead of just accepting a compliment and saying, thank you. We'll just react. And actually that's the easiest way to find out if someone's got insecurity issues. I've had to really train myself or someone gives me a confident, I just say, thank you. ~ Person Irresponsible “There's still this sort of petulant immature. Feeling when you first come into recovering and life's not fair and you have lots of temper tantrums about it, but on top of that, the reasons why you drank in the first place, a lot of us drank on trauma and be great. Rosie is a resident of New Jersey, where she lives with her husband. She is the mother of two grown sons. Memorable Quotes:"I don't want to miss the beautiful gift of now. And that's what I live by. Like when I'm getting worried or I'm starting to kiss it out. I try to pull myself back to where I am and, sure. We all have to make educated decisions for ourselves, but sometimes the best places to be where your feet are planted, because sets in, as people say, yesterday's gone, tomorrows not promised, live for today." ~ Rosie “So, I wrote this book, at the time I wrote it, I thought it would just be cathartic for me. Tweetable Quotes: “If you can't take care of yourself, if you don't feel good, if you aren't in that good headspace, then you're no good to whether it's your business or your family or your grandkids or your kids. You just know you're not helpful.” - Kelly Howard

In my conversation with Lynn, I had so many aha moments and bite sized wisdom, and I know that you are really going to enjoy this! One of my favorite takeaways from this episode was a phrase that Louise used when she found out that she had climbed a mountain of success, but had climbed the wrong one. So as you listen to my episode with Lynn, I want you to ask yourself a question: are you climbing the right mountain?

When she finds herself flummoxed by a problem, she figures out how to work through it, then shares the process to empower others in similar situations. This pattern is the one through line in a dizzying variety of careers—guitar teacher, food writer, health educator, computer geek/tech writer, feng shui teacher and color consultant. Joy is the author of The Cherry Pie Paradox: The Surprising Path to Diet Freedom and Lasting Weight Loss, is based on Joy’s revolutionary workshop program, Thin Within. She created it in 1975 to deal with her own weight struggles, then shared this framework for self-discovery with hundreds of others in the San Francisco Bay Area, giving participants the tools they could adapt to their own circumstances. The book steps the reader through a sequential process with personal stories, writing prompts, guided meditations, and eating/tasting exercises. Joy has a Bachelors degree in Music from Wellesley College, a Masters degree in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley, and has yet to stop taking classes or trainings. Currently she sees clients for personal color analyses from her condo in downtown Portland Oregon. For more about that: visit www.ColorStylePDX.com. Her articles and essays have been published in The New York Times, Working Mother, Parents, HealthStep, Readers Digest, Computer Currents, The San Francisco Chronicle and others. During the pandemic she began a weekly newsletter, “Alive! with Joy,” to cheer and encourage her readers to engage their own curiosity in seeking joy amidst life’s challenges. At her author website, www.joyoverstreet.com, you can download a juicy excerpt from The Cherry Pie Paradox, subscribe to her newsletter, and learn about special events or offerings related to the book. The book will be released in print, ebook and audiobook format in September. I sold the business to my partner in 1980 and have been a serial entrepreneur ever since. Thin Within became an evangelical Christian program after I left…nothing like my original program.

When you're the black sheep of the family, you've got nothing to lose when it's time to finally be heard. Elizabeth Green was born in Croydon, Surrey, and is the "never heard of" sister of shamed British billionaire Sir Philip Green of TopShop. Her memoir, Not In The Script, is very much an open book on her life, family and constant search for love. It is a chance for her to finally have a voice about who she is--at 72. Elizabeth believes "70 is the new 60" and she is still looking for a serious boyfriend in NYC (using all the popular apps, including Black People Meet), after she learned that first she had to find love in herself before she could love someone else. About Julie - It wasn't too long ago I was sitting right where you are.... I just felt blah... Don't get me wrong, from the outside I looked fine. I was good at that - making sure everything looked "fine". But on the inside I was feeling numb, lost and I had this nagging feeling that I was running out of time. Like my life was flying by and I had nothing to show for it. I stayed in a relationship I wasn’t happy in and a job I hated for far too long. I was in a rut, and so embarrassed to be a woman in her 40's with no clue as to what she wanted. The problem was I never really checked in with me and what I wanted. I get it, it’s easier to just keep doing what you’ve been doing… it’s safe and predictable and change is scary. But I can tell you, once you start digging into the wonders of you – you're not going to want to stop because LIFE STARTS TO GET SO GOOD. Everyday I feel more vivacious and alive creating a life that I love and look forward to. I feel healthy, strong and sexy... I trust myself and I'm confident I can accomplish whatever I set my mind to at any age! I want the same for you - I promise, you won’t regret this investment in YOU – you’re so worth it.

Have you joined our Facebook group for Women over 50? https://www.facebook.com/groups/aliferedesigned You can find information about our guest on her website and social media https://www.heidihermanauthor.com/ https://www.facebook.com/HeidiHermanAuthor/ Carry on, keep doing what you're doing, forge ahead, and keep moving. Icelanders have a saying for it: Áfram með Smjörið - on with the butter! Heidi Herman’s new retirement & aging book https://www.amazon.com/Butter-Spread-More-Living-Everyday/dp/1947233033#ace-g7448806443 (On with the Butter!) inspires seniors to Keep Moving, Keep Doing, Keep Living. This book was inspired by https://www.instagram.com/4vikingamma/ (Heidi’s 93-year old mother, Ieda), who undertook a challenge to have 93 new experiences before her 94th birthday to prove you’re never too old for something new. “After my mom’s recovery from a stroke at the age of 92, she began promoting the message of living life with vitality no matter what your age. I helped her achieve and log 93 new activities between her 93rd and 94th birthdays. ‘On with the Butter’ is one of the countless things I learned from my vivacious Icelandic mother. “Just keep moving” was her favorite mantra. She taught me by example to embrace life and live in the moment. I thought of Mom as a life adventurer. She taught me to embrace life with exuberance,” says Heidi. When her mom passed away, Heidi was inspired to inspire others to live life with that same vitality. Heidi herself learned to be what she calls a ‘life adventurer’ and her new book “On With the Butter!” provides insight for readers to add vitality to their own life. Many of the items offered are things that can be done in safe socially-distant ways and still provide mental and physical benefits. It also incorporates her Icelandic heritage and the unique Scandinavian life philosophies.

You have so much greatness to give the world And how true is this for women over 50, with all the wisdom we have, and all the live we have lived. What a shame it is that we decide to not grace the world with the best we can be. When we hid under a bushel, it tells the world exactly what they believe about women over 50. That we are over the hill and we might as well just chuck our dreams and trade it in for a rocking chair and knitting needles. My mother resigned herself to her life. She gave up a long time before she died. She retired from her job of 30 years and a year later she was dead at the age of 62. If my mom had any dreams, she kept them well hidden. Whatever greatness my mom had; we never had the chance to see. I find that a real shame. This to me is the saddest thing about my mom’s sudden death. Which goes back to my point – it can really be too late! You can also find me here: The Podcast - https://women-over-50-a-life.captivat... Life's lemons happen to all of us. Some of us will choose to make lemonade while the rest will become so sour that we allow these circumstances to spoil our life. They steal our joy, rob us of belief, limit our power, dash our dreams and in turn, we become bitter, sour, weak and hopeless. We do less and we settle for less. We forget that this is our life and we are in the driver’s seat when we allow the aftermath of these circumstances to take the wheel.

Join our group off of Facebook - it's focused and it's intentional. www.womenover50aliferedesigned.com In 2002, heart failure and a near-death experience turned Isabelle Morton's world upside down. When a heart transplant saved her life three years later, it also reawakened her gift: an innate affinity with healing diamonds and gemstones, and the knowledge of how to apply them. It also gave her the courage to share this information. In 2010, Isabelle founded the Gemstone Therapy Institute to provide a resource for education, certification, and healing gemstones. Isabelle is the author of 14 books including her memoir: "Accepting Destiny: How Heart Transplant and Near Death Experience Gave Me the Courage to Share Gemstone Therapy with the World." Isabelle believes that the body needs more than physical help to heal. It needs to address the underlying energetic causes and contributing factors of ill health. After 20 years as a successful sales and marketing director in the property induction, Niki set up Twickenham Dog Services and Pup Talk to make a difference to all the dogs and owners she comes in to contact with. In 2016, a corporate restructure caused Jill to have to figure out what she wanted to do for her new career. She went back to school and finished her BA in Psychology, got a job as a project manager, started her MS (which she completed in November, 2018), developed to Director of HR and realized everything she did in the non-profit world was relevant in the for-profit sector. Jill’s passion for helping companies has led her to the launch of LINK … helping companies improve people management and team development in order to get to the next level, now. Jill will give listeners a free next-level strategy session. After our 45 minutes, they will have actionable steps to immediately implement without a high pressure sales pitch. https://email22.godaddy.com/search.php# (jvaldez@linkconsulting.info)
Lila Smith used to think that being a professional actress would be the best way to use her love of storytelling to make a difference that mattered in the world. After spending 20 years training and 10 years professionally performing to great acclaim in NYC and around the US, she still felt there was more. More connection, more honesty, and more impact to be had- offstage, in real life. That’s why Lila created Say Things Better, a 5-Step method of Intentional Communication based on the best tools she learned in theater. Combined with experience in e-commerce, she took inventory of a life that didn’t fit and re-scripted a new one.Website: http://www.saythingsbetter.com/ (www.SayThingsBetter.com) Email: Lila@SayThingsBetter.com Social Handles: @lilalasagna, @saythingsbetter on IG, Lila Smith on LinkedIn. Our thoughts have immense power over our actions and our emotions. This interview with Kat Hoyer of STEER Your Life talks about using her STEER model to re-frame and re-focus your thoughts so they serve you better! After a series of unexpected roadblocks, detours, and speed bumps, Kat found herself at a personal and professional crossroads. As she began to course correct, she paid close attention to how she was able to pull herself out of a very dark place to live a life full of Peace, Passion, and Productivity. From that, She developed the STEER Your Life Coaching® model. This self-coaching model teaches you to #BeTheDriver of your own success. The STEER model has been so successful that Kat's clients were asking her to create a certification program so that they could teach others.
