Deco Beauty founder Julianna Dahbura is on the Female Founder World podcast with Jasmine Garnsworthy this week.
In 2016 Julianna started a nail polish brand with the hopes of building a direct-to-consumer business. This was the Glossier-era, besties, so relying e-commerce only and building a business on Instagram was very exciting. And although she was doing 8-figures in revenue with her biz Deco Beauty, Julianna realized quickly that nail polish was more of an impulse purchase than an online purchase. In 2020 she thought of a brilliant pivot... and it paid off in a big way.
Since pivoting, she's 3x'ed the already successful business, has launched in retailers like Urban Outfitters, JC Penny, Anthropologie and Free People, and has done collab products with brands like Hello Kitty, Tower28, and Lisa Says Gah.
Listen in for the full scoop, how Julianna made a major change in the direction of her business, how she's working on licensing deals to grow her biz, and her unique strategy for retail in 2024.

Rach's the queen of building brand hype and backing it up with brilliant formulas. After a $4000 launch day, tbh skincare did $800,000 in revenue in their first 18 months, and now sell a bottle of cleanser every minute.

Adriana Carrig, the founder of Little Words Project, is on the Female Founder World podcast with Jasmine Garnsworthy!

She has collaborated with huge brands like Dunkin and Barbie, is worn by Taylor Swift, and is sold in 900+ stores including Target and 12 of their own Little Words project boutiques.
I'm always fascinated by people who have the confidence to ask questions and show up for their business at such a young age, and build into something impactful. Adriana has some interesting thoughts on this in the show—what it takes to overcome that self-doubt, plus the specific approach that she took and that she believes made her business successful.

In this episode Rachel shares how she took a non-traditional route to raising money from investors (no really, no one does what she did!), and how she handled all that rejection in the beginning.
With the first $1M investment in the bank, Rachel opened her first Glowbar in New York. Their marketing approach was very grassroots, and it’s an approach they still use today, including partnering with local businesses and posting fliers in the neighborhood.

Recently she cofounded a beauty brand called Brillo Beauty just five months ago, and we spend a lot of time in this ep talking about how she spotted a gap in the market in a very crowded beauty industry, finding a cofounder, overcoming her fear to start her own business, and how Brillo got traction.
It’s not often we get to hear from someone really on the ground floor of something that I think is going to be huge, and I think it’s really helpful for anyone who is in the early days of their own founder story.
Leigh and her cofounder invested $260,000 of their own money to start Brillo, and made $180,000 back in the first three months of business just through sales on the website.
We have a full breakdown of how they spent that first investment too: the website cost $5k, formulation and all the testing you need to launch a beauty product was $30k, their first run of product including packaging was $150k, they spend another $50k on branding and content, $10k on legal and admin, and another $15k or so on other random startup costs.

Tiffany Ju is our guest on Female Founder World!
Tiffany’s bootstrapped hair accessory brand, Chunks, hit $40k in sales in her first year, $500k in year two, and in her third year, 2021, made over $1 million in sales—all without paid ads.
After being let go from her first 9-5 job in 2012, Tiffany began building her first business. She started dying tights in her kitchen and selling them on Etsy, which immediately went viral. She quickly discovered hand-dying tights wasn't a scalable business, and sales declined over time as the trend faded.
Tiffany eventually closed her tights business and took a year off in 2018 to create art and explore her interests. She found a gap in the market for unique, high-quality hair clips, and Chunks was born. Things lined up: Tiffany already had experience manufacturing, the margins looked great, and there wasn’t much competition in the space at the time.
Her tights business left Tiffany in debt, so she knew she had to bootstrap and be extremely resourceful this time around. Tiffany worked with manufacturers who accepted small orders, created her own website, invested in photography, and began testing the market.
Chunks began primarily selling via wholesale since Tiffany was able to tap into her existing network from her first business. From there, the online orders began trickling in.
In 2020 with stores closing and wholesale slowing down, Tiffany continued developing her customer base online and saw ecommerce taking off.
Today, Chunks' business is split about 40% ecommerce and 60% wholesale. The business is doing over a $1 million in annual revenue and manages a team of 14.
While Tiffany has prioritized hiring, she's refocused herself into a marketing director role, deciding that it's too early to bring on someone externally for that position.

Karen Danudjaja, the bootstrapping baddie that built Blume to $7.5 million in sales and 2000 stockists (including Wholefoods!) is on Female Founder World today!
The idea for a better-for-you latte line came to Karen in 2017 while working in corporate real estate, having multiple coffee meetings each day and then getting the caffeine jitters.
She started off working a full time nine-to-five and also running Blume at night. By the time Blume hit around $200,000 in sales, Karen went all in and quit her day job to grow the company.
“I felt like there was enough proof of concept, like returning customer feedback from retailers, that I was ready to go all in.”
At the beginning cafes were her biggest customer, with healthy spots adding Blume’s superfood lattes to the menu. But when lockdowns hit, 85% of Blume’s business was food service—and it all shut down over night. Karen quickly brushed up on digital marketing and pivoted the company to ecommerce.
“I took a digital marketing course March-April 2020 and then launched our first themed bundle for our ecommerce store in mid-April.”
After that, the business shifted to ecommerce-first during the height of the pandemic, before settling into a true omnichannel strategy that’s split 50% wholesale and 50% ecommerce and includes distribution across 2000 cafes, grocery, lifestyle stores, as well as the itsblume.com website.
When Karen needed to find a cost-effective way to scale sales without hiring a team, she came up with a smart solution: build a separate, password-gated Shopify store with minimum order sizes for cafes and independent retailers to place bulk orders.
“We duplicated our regular Shopify store, adjusted pricing and added a login. We have flows set up for them the same way we do for our DTC customers, targeting abandoned carts and returning customer, but set up specific for the needs of a retailer.”
When bigger retailers like Wholefoods and Nordstrom wanted to stock Blume, Karen then built out her sales team.
During all of this growth, Karen continued to bootstrap, which meant carefully managing cash flow was key. Her tip to other bootstrapped brands is to push back on retailers’ standard 90-day payment terms to make sure invoices are paid more quickly.
“We were really firm from the beginning with retailers that we couldn't do net 90 [to get paid for orders]. Because we were bootstrapped and we didn't have access [to cash], I just literally had to say no.”
This year, after ending 2021 with $7.5 million in sales, Blume raised its first round of money from investors, closing $2.5 million in five weeks.
Feeling inspired? We have the exact pitch deck Karen used to raise $2.5 million in five weeks available for you to download in the Female Founder World community home. We’ve shared this resource as a first look at something exciting ✨new and shiny✨ Female Founder World is launching for our besties later this year.

Amy Liu, founder of Tower28 Beauty is the guest on today’s show. For over 15 years, Amy Liu worked as a beauty executive at some of the fastest growing prestige beauty companies, including Smashbox, Kate Somerville and Josie Maran Cosmetics. But as a longtime eczema sufferer, Amy couldn’t even enjoy the best part of working in the beauty industry: trying out all the products and treatments.
Even the clean alternatives were super expensive or too clinical, like they were coming straight from the doctor’s office.
Amy wondered why there was no in-between. Where were the fun, cool, wallet-friendly products that were also gentle and safe? So she set out to create Tower 28, a beauty company inclusive of all skin tones, skin types, budgets, and beauty philosophies.

Few business buzzwords have reached the status of ~community~. It’s a marketing catchall phrase used interchangeably to represent everything from mildly-interested Instagram audiences to deeply-connected and engaged paid groups.
Today’s guest Katya Libin created HeyMama with her cofounder to connect working mums who are growing careers and families. Today HeyMama has ~4,000 members, and has connected more than 10,000 women and hosted over 400 events. Katya's grown the community—in the truest sense of the word—from the ground up and evolved HeyMama from a Wordpress site to a fully fledged social media platform. Does the thought of posting your face on TikTok still make you cringe? Would you do it for $100,000? What about $100,000 in one day? Kat Norton goes by Miss Excel on TikTok and Instagram, where she has a combined social media following upwards of a million people. She operates entirely as a one-woman show to leverage that following into a software training business that, according to one report, makes around $250,000 to $300,000 per month (and once pulled in $100,000 in 24 hours).
And she's only been at this since June 2020.
Unlike many creators, Kat doesn't post spon-con on her channels, and instead uses social media entirely as a marketing machine for her course biz.
Before Kat started her TikTok channel 18 months ago, she worked a regular 9-5 gig and created Excel training modules for her employer on the side. Feeling meh about her career, Kat invested time and money in getting over her fear and embarrassment of posting on TikTok, and focused on mastering manifestation and energetics through programs like Lacey Phillips' To Be Magnetic Course. She then posted her first video, and hasn't looked back.
If the word manifest just triggered an eye roll, and a headline about earning "$100k in 24 hours" makes you cringe, give Kat a sec to change your mind in episode 34 of the Female Founder World podcast. She's also a masterful creator with plenty of tips who knows exactly what's working on TikTok.

Dr. Amy Divaraniya is the CEO and Founder of Oova, a tech-led women’s health biz that measures multiple hormones through urine samples and provides personalized results and insights on a woman’s fertility. In this ep she shares how she built up her business acumen, her launch strategy (it doesn’t involve DTC or an ecommerce site), how she invented a medical product with a team of two, the challenges and joys of pivoting from science to startup life, and her own personal fertility story that led her to starting Oova.

Jordan Rondel started out baking and decorating beautiful cakes in Auckland, New Zealand. Now, she lives in LA selling cool-as-hell DIY cake kits through her online store and national retailers alongside her sister (and business partner).
Jordan’s growing her business through collaborations with influencers and likeminded brands, and breaks down the different ways she structures her partnerships in this ep.
She’s also heavily focused on ~aesthetics~ and ~content~, and shares her thoughts on why her business isn’t a food biz, it’s a media business. The Caker certainly stands out in a category filled with Betty Crocker wannabes, and it’s because Jordan didn’t look to the food category when dreaming up her brand identity — she connected disparate fields like fashion and beauty to bring something all-new to life.

Isabel Aagaard didn’t just create a product, she started a movement.
Her business, LastObject, creates eco-friendly, premium, beautiful I-should-have-thought-of-that! alternatives to single-use products. It all started with LastSwab: a reusable 'cotton' swab made with a material that's more like rubber or plastic. Unlike its disposable predecessor, it can be cleaned with soap and water and re-used over and over. Isabel and her cofounders went on to launch LastTissue, LastRound (makeup pads), and more eco-friendly products with equally catchy names.
Isabel has a lot to share about how to get clear on your company’s purpose, using Kickstarter to validate and shape your product design, testing prototypes, and the importance of pursuing a mission that will keep you working through all of the toughest entrepreneurial challenges.

I first connected with Michelle Cordeiro Grant when she was just getting started on LIVELY. I was working as a fashion editor and stopped by LIVELY’s pop-up in New York to pick up something from the new underwire-free, comfy bra brand everyone was talking about.
That was in 2016, and by 2019 Michelle had sold LIVELY to Wacoal for $105 Million.
I went back to the early days of LIVELY in this interview, and asked Michelle to talk me through how she got so much traction, so quickly. She shared the email marketing tactic she used to grow her pre-launch email list to 133,000 people in 2 days, how she worked up the courage to quit her corporate job and get into startups, and more lessons from her wild ride from idea to acquisition.

Golde has scaled up significantly in the past year, and that means big production and supply chain updates. So, how does a product-based business scale up their operations to meet hockeystick growth in demand? We get into that and more in the episode.

Ever thought about entering the non-alc industry? Jen Batchelor started Kin to transform the world’s oldest social ritual, drinking, into a conscious act of better being, rallying a community of sober-curious, sober-lite, and straight-up sober customers. She launched in 2017 - early in the non-alc movement - with her original functional, non-alcoholic beverage: High Rhode. I asked Jen to tell us how she took Kin from idea phase to launch, and on to sell over 1 million servings.
*Don’t miss Jen talking about the ‘seasons of financing’ and how to find the right investors for your stage of business.
**Since I recorded this episode, Jen has brought supermodel Bella Hadid on board as a cofounder of Kin Euphorics.
