DiabetesPowerShow #172 "Sometimes it feels like the whole world is falling apart." Special guest: Dr. William Polonsky This episode of DiabetesPowerShow #172 was recorded on Monday, November 6, 2017. This show is not directly related to Diabetes. It was, however, inspired by emails from a significant number of DPS listeners, going through some very hard times as a result of recent tragic events. We made the decision to postpone the release of this show. We felt that it was too soon to publish some of the content. One of the terrible events happened only 24 hours before we recorded the show. We share listener experiences with the recent hurricanes in Texas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, and the mass-shootings in Las Vegas (our home base) and Texas. This episode is dedicated to and in support of the people who continue to feel the effects of these tragic events. Our thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of you. God bless you all.
On today’s DiabetesPowerShow, Charlie, Lori, and Chris welcome Dr. Travis Stork. In 2016, Dr. Travis Stork, ER physician and host of the Emmy Award-winning show The Doctors, joined a nationwide movement – For Your SweetHeart™: Where Diabetes and Heart Disease Meet – to raise awareness of the link between type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The initiative seeks to encourage those with type 2 diabetes to know their risk and speak to their healthcare provider, for the sake of their health and the people they cherish the most. Dr. Stork partnered with For Your SweetHeart, in remembrance of his grandfather, who had type 2 diabetes, to urge people with type 2 diabetes to take the Heart You Quiz, and sign-up for more information to learn more about their risk for heart disease. Because of his grandfather’s experience, Dr. Stork learned about the importance of managing the condition, before he ever became a doctor. As a grandchild of someone who was directly impacted by type 2 diabetes, Dr. Stork shares his personal connection to type 2 diabetes – his grandfather’s story – and why this campaign is close to his heart. This Grandparents Day (September 10), we encourage you to help educate your family members and loved ones about the critical link between type 2 diabetes and heart disease. According to a national survey, more than half (52 percent) of adults with type 2 diabetes are unaware of their increased risk for heart disease and related life-threatening events, such as heart attack, stroke or even death. To learn more about the For Your SweetHeart movement, which was developed and sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly and Company, as well as take and share the Heart You Quiz, please visit https://www.foryoursweetheart.com.

Dr. Suarez and his team share with us some Alternate Methods for Testing and Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Dr. Polonsky and Dr. Guzman help us explore the many dynamic emotions and challenges that are experienced, not only by the people with Diabetes, but by those who love them. Diabetes is not a solo act…family and friends are as much a part of the process as the person with Diabetes. William H. Polonsky, PhD, CDE Dr. Polonsky is President and Founder of the Behavioral Diabetes Institute, the world's first organization wholly dedicated to studying and addressing the unmet psychological needs of people with diabetes. He is also Associate Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. On today’s DiabetesPowerShow, Charlie Cherry, Chris Daniel, and Lori Cherry welcome Doris Hobbs. Doris Hobbs has a passion for the fashion from a very glamorous time in our history. She loves all things 1940’s and 50’s, especially the new Christian Dior styles from 1947. She brings back this glamour on her website, RichInLoveFashion.com capturing stunning images from the golden age of Hollywood. Doris is thriving with Type One Diabetes. At age 33, the first thing Doris realized after been diagnosed as a Type One Diabetic, was that she had two options: She could allow it to control her life, or find the unbinding courage from within the tragedy; She chose courage. The next few days were consumed with perplexed emotions, mostly of denial, pooled from the self-belief that she could be a rare case and mysteriously cured. She was given a new role and lifestyle as a Type One Diabetic. She immediately chose to not wear it as a sympathy garment; instead, she would rather re-fashion how others perceive such a life-altering disorder. Aside from a select group of family and friends that knew of her health struggles, she somehow managed, two days after the news was confirmed, to conduct an on-location photo-shoot for her website, Rich in Love Fashion. She knew, without a doubt, at that moment, she had a purpose on earth, and found herself more determined to not allow Diabetes to hinder her little girl dreams. We, as a society, have a tendency of suppressing our fears, as mastering those can be difficult, and takes large amounts of will and courage to look in the mirror and say, “I will succeed; I can do this!” The relationship between one’s journey of self-growth and courage tends to evoke feelings of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty, but allowing such emotions to take center stage is moral injustice. At birth, each and every one of us is embedded with a purpose or talent, which provides us the blueprints of our life’s story, which must be written and shared. “From all of my lessons and blessings in the last 2 1/2 years, I’ve formed an organic sense of how to live an authentic life that channels pure gratitude and glamour”. Since being diagnosed a Type One Diabetic, Doris has provided media exposure for organizations such as: Beyond Type 1, JDRF, American Diabetes Association, Diabetes Alive, and has been featured on 101.7 KKIQ, 92.1 KKDV, Diabetes Connections, and Diabetes Late Nite for her advocate efforts.
On today’s DiabetesPowerShow, Charlie Cherry, Chris Daniel, and Lori Cherry talk about alternate site testing. How can we lessen or eliminate the pain associated with finger sticks? To help us with that question, we welcome Dr. Christopher Jacobs, the CEO and Chief Research Engineer for Genteel. He promises that the Genteel Lancing Device will challenge everything you’ve come to believe about a lancing device. During the show, Charlie, for the first time, successfully accomplished alternate site testing, using the Genteel device. The camera clicked, as he learned that this new lancing device allows you to poke your skin once, and return to the same spot throughout the day, and draw blood without actually piercing your skin again. The unit creates a vacuum, so you can flip the lancet in the device (the sharp part) away from the skin, and do multiple blood draws from just one poke. He successfully drew blood 4 times during the show, but only stuck himself once...Charlie is now a fan of the Genteel. Dr. Christopher Jacobs is the Chief Research Engineer in the development of Genteel, and holder of 75 United States and international patents; new medical devices and instrumentation through Oregon Graduate Institute (OGI) and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Biomedical engineer, designed and assisted in patenting world’s first variable rate cardiac pacemaker; Advanced Medical Technology (AMTEK), 1969, patented. Developed Control Systems for Artificial Kidneys (Renal Clearance); University of Southern California, 1964-1965. Devised Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Dream Detector; USC County Hospital, 1966. Designed Electric Current Instrumentation to Treat Skin Disorders and electronic perspiration inhibition equipment; General Medical Corporation, 1972, patented. Set Up & Organized Medical Laboratories; USC Main Campus, 1964-1966. Doctoral Dissertation: “The Determinants of Maximum Expiratory Flow” (predicts how rapidly air can be expelled from lungs); results confirmed by experiment. Research helped test development of portable respirators, 1964-1967.

On today’s show Charlie Cherry, Chris Daniel, and Lori Cherry talk about a wonderful program that is helping children from all around the world who have Diabetes. Spare a Rose, Save a Child is simple: they encourage people to buy one less rose on Valentine’s Day, and donate the value of that flower to children with Diabetes. Over the past three years, the campaign has raised $55,844... providing a year’s worth of supplies to over 1,000 children. This year, the campaign will run February 1 until February 14. Their goal is to continue to provide lifesaving supplies to children in need. ‘SPARE A ROSE…SAVE A CHILD’ supports the ’LIFE FOR A CHILD’ program. WHAT IS 'LIFE FOR A CHILD'? 'Life for a Child' is an International Diabetes Federation program, with the vision: NO CHILD SHOULD DIE OF DIABETES Type 1 Diabetes is a lifelong condition requiring daily insulin injections, blood glucose monitoring, education and specialist health care. Access to this life-saving treatment is often difficult, and sometimes impossible, to achieve in less-resourced countries. Without support, many young people die soon after being diagnosed. Those who survive develop complications, such as eye damage and kidney failure. THIS IS WHERE 'LIFE FOR A CHILD' STEPS IN: We partner with Diabetes centers in lower-income countries, to provide young people with: • Insulin and syringes • Blood glucose monitoring equipment and test strips • Clinical care • HbA1c testing • Diabetes education, workshops, camps, resources • Support for health professional
DiabetesPowerShow Version 2.0...The Next 10 Years We're baaaack! After a long winter break, we are back with a new and improved DiabetesPowerShow. Or as we like to call it...DiabetesPowerShow Version 2.0. We are excited about some great changes that are taking place in our little corner of the web. Lori, the voice our listeners have heard at the beginning of the show for all of these years, is joining Charlie and Chris as a full time Co-Host. She brings a unique prospective to the show as, what we have referred to for many years, a "Type 3 Diabetic". We here at DPS define a "Type 3" as a person who has a loved one or friend who has Diabetes. (Not to be confused with the medical / clinical Type 3 definition) So our team represents Type 1 (Chris), Type 2 (Charlie), and "Type 3" (Lori). We have some very exciting things in store for 2017 and beyond.
On today’s show, Charlie Cherry, Chris Moore, Theresa Moore, and Chris Daniel talk about... The weather is starting to change, so it’s time to think about winterizing your Diabetes. What special things do you need to do in preparation for the cold weather and Diabetes?
A letter from a DiabetesPowerShow listener... Hello Diabetes Power Show, A quick note to say thank you for the time you take to educate the diabetic community. My wife and I have learned so much from your pod cast and guests over the past six months. I am a type 1 diabetic who uses an Omnipod insulin pump and CGM. I developed pancreatitis five years ago and was required to go into the hospital every three weeks to have stents placed into my pancreatic ducts to move forward with simple life activities. After eighteen months, my doctor at the University of Colorado linked me to an excellent team at the University of Minnesota to perform a Total Pancreatectomy and Auto Islet Transplantation. The surgery was 17 hours and my islet cells were transplanted into my liver. I had a 40% chance the cells would take and I would not need insulin or be diabetic. I was also informed before the surgery that I had tested positive for a GAD antibody and there was an increased chance that my system would attack the transplanted Islet cells and I would become diabetic. As you can see, my cells did not survive and I am now a type one diabetic. However, I fully accepted the outcome and entered into the surgery expecting to come out being a diabetic. I am glad to say that the pain is gone and that is half the battle. In addition to being type 1, I will have to take enzymes for digestion for the rest of my life. I started out taking injections but quickly found that it was impossible to stop some of the lows and 12 months later, I switched to an insulin pump. My lows tend to be a bit different then a normal diabetic. I do not have the same ability to take sugar and recover from a low within 15 or 30 minutes. At times, it may take 30-50 carbs to move my BG up 30-40 points. The recovery process from my lows are different every time. My CGM has saved my life a minimum of 6 times and I am thankful to have the technology. I am also thankful to have an insulin pump that can be suspended to stop the lows. My A1C has ranged from 6.9 - 9.8 and is now at 7.2. I eat close to the same food each day and my diet is low fat and low carb due to my impaired ability to digest certain foods. I live off of Quest nutrition Shakes (link below) and Quest Nutrition bars. The bars are low sugar, low net carbs and high in fiber and protein (and they are good). The shakes are low sugar, low carb, low fat and high in protein. Even non diabetics who like to eat healthy enjoy the bars and shakes! I have also recently discovered Paleo bars (Sunflower butter) and the bars are also low sugar, low net carbs and taste good. My success is due to the love and support of my wife. I would not be where I am today without her continuous care and concern for my well being. She has been with me every step of the way and has never given up on me or my health. I see the stress the disease causes her and she worries about my overall health and longevity of life. We have been married for 24 years and we hope the future blesses us with many, many more. I have been fortunate enough to have excellent doctors who respond to e-mail, phone calls and are experts in their professions. At some point, they may add value to your show and have the ability to help others who listen to your POD cast.. After all they have been successful keeping me alive and when you consider I have no pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, appendix, no pain and am a type 1 diabetic… That is no small feat… Through the process, I have found that no one is the same and we all have different struggles with the same goals in mind. To live a normal life, love our families and contribute to society. Thanks again for providing such amazing insight into the ever changing world of diabetes. You are helping the diabetic community in more ways than you will ever know! Sincerely, Steve and Christy Ewing
On today's DiabetesPowerShow, Charlie Cherry, Chris Moore, Theresa Moore, Chris Daniel, and our official behind-the-scenes announcer, Lori Cherry, celebrate ten years…that's right…a full decade of Diabetes podcasting. In celebration of this milestone, we indulge ourselves, as we reminisce about the amazing adventure this show has been for us. We have met so many incredible people from all around the world in the Diabetes community. We have traveled from coast to coast, attending Diabetes events as ambassadors for not only DiabetesPowerShow, but for the Diabetes community at large. On August 28, 2006, DiabetesPowerShow was born. When we started, we were not 100% sure there would be a show number 2, or that we would be around the following month. Here we are, August 28, 2016, and we are going stronger than ever! Very few podcasts that involve 2 or more co-hosts survive more than a few episodes. We started in the very beginning of the new technology called ‘podcasting’. Out of the first wave of thousands of podcasts, created at that time, covering a variety of topics, (now there are millions) there are just a handful of remaining ‘original' podcasters. We proudly count ourselves among that small group of people. The five of us have developed a bond and friendship that is unbreakable. After 10 years, whether the microphones are turned on or off, we can almost read each other’s minds, and finish each other’s sentences. DiabetesPowerShow is the longest consistently-running Diabetes related podcast in the world. We are committed to taking this show into the future, as we all work towards a cure for this thing called Diabetes.
Here on DiabetesPowerShow, we have often said that "taking good care of yourself with Diabetes is not rocket science"...well...on today's show, we actually put that theory to the test...with an actual Rocket Scientist...really...a real live NASA Rocket Scientist! Ernie Prado serves as a Technical Project Manager at NASA's Johnson Space Center in the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility (SVMF) where astronauts train prior to spaceflight. At the SVMF, he leads projects to create, maintain, and upgrade full-size International Space Station trainers and mockups that astronauts will use during the course of their careers. In addition to his work at NASA, he is involved in manufacturing large-scale 3D Printers. Ernie holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautical Sciences and Engineering from UC Davis. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 15, and has been on an insulin pump for the past five years. He loves to educate others about Diabetes, and hopes to inspire fellow T1Ds to never stop chasing their dreams. Charlie Cherry Chris Moore Theresa Moore Chris Daniel

On today's DiabetesPowerShow, Charlie Cherry, Chris Moore, Theresa Moore, and Chris Daniel talk about Pets with Diabetes. This episode is dedicated to Chris Moore's Daughter, Angelica, whose sweet puppy passed away last weekend. We welcome 3 special guests in studio: Nicholas Vitale DVM Nicholas grew up in Metro Detroit, and knew from a young age that he wanted to, some day, become a veterinarian. He attended undergraduate studies at Michigan State University, and holds a degree in Zoo and Aquarium Science. He then attended veterinary school, also at Michigan State, and graduated in 2011. Nicholas originally went into veterinary medicine because he wanted to be a zoo veterinarian. However, as things and interests changed, he decided that he wanted to become a pathologist. Post veterinary school, he attended and began a Residency in Anatomic Pathology at Cornell University. After approximately one year, Nicholas decided that pathology was not where he wanted to be in the veterinary medicine world. He moved back home, where he spent another year in Detroit, practicing small animal medicine. Nicholas moved to Las Vegas three years ago, and has been practicing at Desert Inn Animal Hospital ever since. Currently, he is preparing for, and studying to sit for his board accreditation, through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. When not working, Nicholas spends a lot of his free time volunteering, and being with friends. He is highly involved with The Desert Tortoise Foundation, as well as The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and with Desert Tortoise Research and Health Monitoring. He is also involved with legal cases with Clark County Animal Control. He has a "zoo" at home, including a French Bulldog named Odin, two parrots, Finn and Jager, two ferrets, Reason and Single, as well as a tiny desert tortoise, nameless, and a bearded dragon, who is also nameless. Norma Silverman Norma is a cat lover, who rescued and adopted ‘Nutmeg’. She joins us in studio, to share her experiences with the diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately the loss of her special friend, due to complications from Diabetes. Jim Holtz RN Jim is Theresa’s boss in the Hospital Emergency Room. He is a Registered Nurse, and Manager of Critical Care. He has many years of experience as a Medical Professional. Jim tells us how frustrating it was, as a professional who cares for people in the hospital, not to recognize the signs and symptoms of Diabetes in ‘Morgan’ and ‘Gabby’, his four-legged friends at home. What are the odds…not just one dog with Diabetes…but two?

JDRF T1D NATION SUMMIT Charlie Cherry was invited to speak to teenage people with Type One Diabetes at the JDRF T1D Nation Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada. He and his team from DiabetesPowerShow.com did what they know best...they brought a radio station set to the event venue. The idea was to do a role play with a twist. The parents played the part of a T1D teen, and the teen played the part of an adult radio personality. The radio interviewer...played by the teen...has to interview the T1D teen, played by the parent. The desired outcome is to spark conversation about their Diabetes. This is an audio clip (after all, it is radio) of Conner, "with an e", one of the teens who is interviewing an adult, and Chris Moore from DiabetesPowerShow, who is playing the part of a 13 year old boy. This was unscripted and unrehearsed...

On today's DiabetesPowerShow, We welcome the Leavitt family. The entire family was in studio to share their Diabetes journey...times two. Lots of laughter and lots of tears. A fun time was had by all. About the Leavitt Family Jason and Michelle have been married for 18 years, and have three children; Jace the oldest son is 16, Erick the middle son is 13, and the youngest is daughter Oaklie who is 11. Their diabetic journey started in November 2011, when Michelle took Erick to the doctor, for what she believed was a urinary tract infection, due to frequent urination. Erick was diagnosed with T1D, which opened up a whole world the family knew nothing about. Over the next couple of years, the family worked to control Erick’s blood sugars, while learning all they could about T1D. This led them to become very involved with the JDRF. Almost exactly three years later, in November of 2014, their daughter, Oaklie, was also diagnosed with T1D, after exhibiting similar signs to what Erick had shown. Although mentally and emotionally difficult to comprehend having another T1D, they were confident in maintaining a healthy and normal life for now two of their children. The Leavitts have taken a positive outlook, and learned to embrace their new life of living with T1D. They continue to be involved with the JDRF, as both Erick and Oaklie are Youth Ambassadors for the organization, as well as participating in the One Walk yearly. This year, both Jason and Erick will be participating in the JDRF Ride to Cure in Tucson, Arizona, which is a 104 mile bike ride to support T1D.
Upon learning that Oaklie was also T1D, one of the changes that had to be made was their walk team name, which up to that point was Team diabErick. A party was held with all of their walk team supporters, as a kick off to introduce the new team name.

Today, Charlie Cherry, Chris Moore, Theresa Moore, and Chris Daniel are joined by Dr. C. R. Kannan to answer questions from DiabetesPowerShow.com listeners. Larry, type 2, age 51, Seattle I was just diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, and was told that the pain and numbness in my feet was diabetic neuropathy. This pain has been with me for about 2 years, and it’s almost unbearable. Is this a permanent thing, or will it go away when my diabetes gets better? Also, what is neuropathy? Phyllis, type 2, age 61, Phoenix I was told I have type 2 diabetes and a thyroid condition within 5 months of each other. Is there a connection between the two? Leonard, type 2, age 56, Dallas I just had my second A1c, and it was a big improvement over my first. In a little over 3 months, I have gone from 14.2 down to 9.5. I am on pills and insulin, and I have had several lows in this time. I have gone from as high as 450, down to as low as 48. The lows are very scary to me, and I feel like I have a hangover after I have these big sweeps in blood sugar. Am I doing any damage to myself with these extremes? Brittney, type 1, age 15, Atlanta (for Theresa) I found out I have type 1 diabetes last June, and I’m thinking about going on the pump. I’m a little nervous, because I haven’t told anybody about my diabetes. I feel like the pump will be obvious, because everybody will be able to see it, and I don’t know how they will react, especially the boys. Theresa, did you ever feel like that when you were a teenager? Did you tell your friends? How did they handle it? Did you tell boys about it when you started dating? I’m afraid people will look at me differently if they know. Janice, type 2, age 48, Baltimore I just started an exercise routine, and I’m having trouble keeping my blood sugar in check. I thought my numbers would go down after my brisk walk, but they go up over 250 every time. I start around 140. Why is this happening, and what can I do about it? Shannon, gestational, age 31, Des Moines I am six months pregnant with my second child. My first child is 2 1/2. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and I’m trying my best to keep my numbers under control. Does this increase my child’s odds of getting diabetes? Does gestational ever turn into full diabetes? Robert, type 2, age 46, somewhere in Utah (not his real name or location) I live in a small town, and my Doctor is also a member of my church. There are some things that I am not comfortable in talking to him about. I am about 40 lbs over weight, I have type 2 diabetes, and I have neuropathy in my feet. In the last year or so, I have had some trouble in the bedroom. Things are not working like they used to, and I feel like I'm too young to give up on intimacy with my wife. Could this be connected to my diabetes? Is this it for me, or is it possible that I can do something about it? Please don't mention my name or city. Thanks. Jenny, type 1, age 22, San Diego I have type 1 diabetes, and I was diagnosed at age 14. I used to be slim and trim, but now I’m overweight. When people find out I'm diabetic, they almost always assume that I am type 2 because of my weight. One person even told me I was lucky, because I had the “good kind” of diabetes. I’m trying to lose the extra lbs, but it is a constant battle. I have given up on trying to explain to people the difference between types 1 and 2, because I can no longer tell the difference myself. I don't know if this is a dumb question, but is it possible to have both? Is this common?

Chef, Author, Speaker and a Person Living with Diabeties Growing up in Los Angeles offered Chef Robert a culinary experience he will always cherish. Family cooks and guests in my home were experts in preparing Jewish, Mexican, Middle and Far Eastern, and traditional dishes, which gave him a love for food and the creative outlet it provided. After graduating from the Prestigios Culinary Institute of America in 1976. In 1998 he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Thus began his motivation to create great tasting dishes that are easy to prepare. In 1998 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Much of what I heard in those early day was about the foods that were prohibited. I suspected that my days of good eating were over, yet as I worked through my ups and downs, I came to realize that the selection of foods I could and should eat was vast and included many of my favorites. This motivated me to attempt to create delicious, diabetic-friendly dishes that were also easy to prepare. Chef Robert is a nationally recognized author, public speaker and spokesperson for all people affected with diabetes. He travels the country speaking on the benefits of healthy eating not only for people affected with diabetes, but also for anyone who would like to eat and live a healthy lifestyle. Robert has collaborated with Lee Iacocca and Dr. Denise Faustman of Harvard Medical School and is a state captain for the Iacocca foundation. He has worked with Al Roker, Ben Vereen, Richard Simmons, Ann Curry, Indy car racer Charlie Kimble, The Amazing Race Winner Nat Strand and many others! Chef Robert has spoken in hospitals and health fairs in all across the planet. With Roberts focus on healthy cuisine, he is considered a pro when it comes to food preparation and nutrition. Robert is a frequent guest on TV and radio. He has appeared on ESPN’s Cold Pizza. Robert is the author of 2 best selling cookbooks. Chef Robert is producing a “Reality” TV show “Cooking Across America” and has been featured in Diabetes Health magazine, The Radish, KWQC NBC and the Diabetic Living Magazine. Chef Robert has been selected buy Sanofi and Everyday Health to do consumer online cooking videos. He is a keynote speaker for Taking Control of Your Diabetes all across the USA. He has worked with Sanofi, Abbott, Accu-Check-Roche, American Diabetes Association, Lyons Club International, Rotary Clubs, University of Wisconsin, Genesis Hospitals, Hy-Vee Grocery Stores, Kroger stores, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Hill and Valley sugar free bakeries to name just a few! His recipes celebrate great-tasting food that both diabetics and non-diabetics can enjoy. Robert’s cookbooks are filled with tips, tidbits, and humorous anecdotes that I hope will make cooking fun! You are not what you eat, you are how much you eat!

On today's show, we are honored to welcome Vietnam Veteran Randall Brown. Randall served in Vietnam as a registered mail courier, and flew all over Vietnam multiple times weekly in a C7a Army Caribou. Often these missions were flown in the flight path of the planes responsible for dispersing Agent Orange and other herbicides over the jungle canopy. Randall recalls the smell of the chemicals in the cabin of his plane, but had no idea how they would impact the rest of his life. He served for 13 months, from January 1967 until after the TET Offensive in February, 1968.In July 1969, Randall was diagnosed with Diabetes, and for the next 10 years, fought with the VA for treatment. Then in 1979, he was finally treated for Diabetes...first with pills, then as the disease progressed, with insulin injections. In 2003, he was classified as totally disabled by the VA. He has had major cancer surgeries, including his hips, knees, shoulder, eyes, and loss of his stomach. Last year, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. All of these conditions have a direct connection to Agent Orange. After his military service, Randall was on a team which opened the first 150 Red Lobster Restaurants in America. He owned his own business for 22 years. He is now retired, and devotes his time and energy to helping Vietnam Vets affected by Agent Orange. He founded 'Vietnam Veterans with Diabetes', and in connection with Dr. Steven Edelman, founder of 'Taking Control Of Your Diabetes' (TCOYD) Randall assists Vietnam Veterans in finding resources and connections to help with the many complications caused by the exposure to these chemicals. Randall and his wife, Rita (high school sweethearts) have been married 49 years. They have 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson, who is 9 years old. In spite of the many challenges Randall has faced over the years, he manages to keep a positive attitude and a sense of humor. Listen and enjoy the show! www.VVWD.org -Vietnam Veterans with Diabetes-

Richard WilsonA Letter from ScotlandHi guys,First of all, I want to say how much I love the show. It's great that you are taking the time to try and educate and inspire the diabetic community. Keep up the good work.My name is Richard. I'm 30, from Scotland & I've been type 1 for about 15 years. I'm currently on Lantus Long acting insulin and Novarapid short acting insulin.Over the years, I've kept my diabetes in pretty good check, having an average hb1c of around 6 or 7 most times, & have always felt pretty confident in managing my diabetes. Then in March this year, things went a bit wrong. After getting a really big scare with having a pretty bad hypo, the worst I've ever had, I began to suffer from panic attacks. I was really scared, as I kept thinking that I would hypo that bad again. I began checking my blood sugar a lot more, up to 20-30 times a day, maybe more. Then I lost all of my hypo warning signs, which made my mental state even worse, as how would I know when my sugars were becoming low? So in response to this, I began running my sugars high just to be safe. Bad idea! I had a terrible few months, panicking constantly, thinking of nothing else but my sugar levels, 24/7.I don't know if panic attacks or fear of hypos is a big issue with diabetics, but it ruined my life for about 3-4 months. I found it weird that for years, I was a great diabetic, had no worries, and had hypos that didn't bother me. Then I had a big one and 'boom', it messed me up pretty bad for a while.I'm fine now, and my signs have came back & my bloods are back on track and I'm testing a lot less.I think that if this affected me, it may have affected others, and may be a good topic to cover. If you decide to cover this topic and would like any more information from my experience, I'd be happy to help.Thank you.Richard**Richard Wilson has been a Type 1 Diabetic for 15 years and is on the Basal Bolus regime (Lantus Solostar and NovaRapid Insulin).Richard is 30 years old, and lives in Ayrshire, Scotland. He shares his life with a very special Type 3, Leigh, his long term girlfriend of 10 years.Richard works for the Local Health Board in a clerical capacity, and has done so for the last 10 years. He was diagnosed Type 1 at about age 15.Richard is a guitar tutor in his spare time.He enjoys being active. He does a lot of walking and cycling, and fancies himself a bit of an amateur photographer for fun.

Iron AndyAndy Holder has always been the type of person to look for a new challenge, but his biggest challenge found him in 2005. He has been an athlete all of his life — playing football, baseball, and wrestling. After college, Andy maintained a healthy lifestyle by exercising, eating well and becoming a body builder. Despite being in such great shape, Andy was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2005 at the age of 36.A husband and father of two young boys, Andy was initially confused, scared and angry by the diagnosis. But, after researching the disease, he realized this was another challenge he would overcome. Rather than allow diabetes to define him and to control the rest of his life, Andy became determined to do something extraordinary and to prove that no matter what challenges life presents, you can live without limits…Andy decided to become an Ironman triathlete.Despite the fact that he had never done a triathlon before and didn’t know how to swim, Andy challenged himself to compete in the ultimate test of physical and mental endurance, as Ironman competitors swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and complete the event by running a full marathon of 26.2 miles. Andy faces additional challenges as an athlete with diabetes. He must keep his blood sugar levels in check, which involves careful meal planning, wearing an insulin pump, and testing his blood sugar a dozen times a day — even while running or riding his bike. Despite these significant obstacles, Andy has persevered, and has now completed three marathons, eight half Ironman and three full Ironman competitions…all in the past three years. Andy’s story is about overcoming tremendous odds and rising high above life’s toughest challenges — a message he has delivered to numerous audiences across the country, such as: USC School of Pharmacy, Loma Linda University, Scripps Institute, University of Texas El Paso, Hy-Vee Inc., Home Diagnostics Inc. and Roche Inc., just to name a few. Andy has also spoken at many elementary schools and diabetes camps across the country.Andy’s primary responsibility has been to join forces with Diabetes Shoppe®, a program offered by AmerisourceBergen®, as an official spokesperson for the “Managing Diabetes: Living Without Limits” campaign. He is participating in races and other events nationwide on an inspirational tour to spread his message of encouragement. His most recent challenge has been to create the Iron Andy Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to provide inspiration, resources, and assistance to individuals and families coping with the daily challenges of a chronic disease like diabetes. In the summer of 1953 in Turlock, Calif., teenager Linda Collins was no exception. With her parents away on vacation, Linda managed to cut her finger badly enough to require a trip to the local hospital.Linda’s family members were no strangers in the local medical community. In fact, they were a staple. Linda’s father, Dr. Marion Collins, was a physician and surgeon in the town. To get treatment for her injury, Linda was taken to Turlock’s Lillian Collins Hospital, an institution founded by her grandfather. There, she was treated by her uncle, Dr. James Collins.Even for this knowledgeable medical family, what should have been a routine procedure to treat Linda’s cut turned into a medical nightmare. Following standard protocol, Linda’s uncle performed a skin test before injecting Linda with a full dose of tetanus antitoxin which contained horse serum. Within moments, Linda went into anaphylactic shock – a severe and potentially fatal allergic reaction. The incident nearly killed her. Linda spent several days in an oxygen tent fighting for her life. Bolstered by the strength of her youth she was able to survive the trauma. Linda could return to a normal life, but she and her parents both felt there was a lesson to be learned.“My parents realized that if one tiny drop of the antitoxin had produced that reaction I’d probably be killed by a full dose,” she recalled. “Thereafter, when I went away from home for a weekend or to a neighboring town for school events, they’d attach a note to my coat or make me a paper bracelet describing my allergies.”Linda gained a reputation around Turlock for her medical tagging. Everyone in the small town had heard her story. But, it wasn’t until Linda was accepted to Stanford that she and her parents decided to create a more permanent indicator of her medical allergy.Refusing to be tattooed or to wear a dog tag, as her father suggested, Linda came up with the concept of a silver bracelet with “Allergic to Tetanus Antitoxin” engraved on the back. Dr. Collins added “MedicAlert” and the symbol of the medical profession to the front. The design was sent to a local San Francisco jeweler. Days later the first MedicAlert bracelet was created.Walking around campus, Linda was frequently asked about the unique piece of jewelry on her wrist. Many people asked how they could get one for themselves or a loved one. She told her parents of the interest, and together they decided that their concept needed to be shared.Dr. Collins launched a campaign to turn his daughter’s jewelry concept into a national phenomenon with a strictly philanthropic model in mind. “We are not here to make money. We are here to save lives,” he frequently stated. In 1956, Dr. Collins established the MedicAlert Foundation International, a nonprofit organization. In the more than 50 years since its creation, the foundation has grown from a family-run organization, headquartered in the Collins family living room, to a global entity with offices in ten countries and 4 million members worldwide.Over the years, the foundation has protected the lives of millions of people all because of one teenager’s accident, allergic reaction and desire to help others like herself in times of need.MedicAlert Foundation International 2323 Colorado Avenue Turlock, CA 95382 888-633-4298"http://www.medicalert.org" www.medicalert.org

On this week's show, we welcome Kelly Close and Amy Tenderich. Kelly and Amy, along with Manny Hernandez, founder of TuDiabetes.com and with the support of many other leaders in the Diabetes community, are conducting a petition drive to the FDA.We fear that innovation is slowing in Diabetes, despite the urgent need for new treatments. Today, close to half of the 24 million Americans with Diabetes do not meet recommended blood sugar goals. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's job is to protect the safety of patients and approve innovative medicines. We are asking the new FDA leadership for two things:1. To create a council of Diabetes patients and health care professionals who can help the FDA assess new information and assimilate diverse opinions, including those of patients.2. To make the rules reasonable for the sake of the patients, which can be done without sacrificing safety. http://www.helpthefda.org/Please note: This petition is sponsored by a group of concerned patients, doctors and Diabetes educators, not the drug industry.
Irving A. Cohen, MD, MPHAuthor of the new book,Dr. Cohen's New Hippocratic Diet Guide"How to Lose Weight Naturally and Beat the Obesity Epidemic" Dr. Cohen is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine. He obtained his post-graduate training in Preventive Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University where he served as the Chief Resident ofPreventive Medicine in the Bloomberg School of Public health. He has served both in government and private practice. He currently directs two natural weight-loss programs in Kansas and holds a faculty appointment in the History of Medicine at the University of KansasSchool of Medicine. On today's show, Irving A. Cohen, MD, MPH, a recognized expert in disease prevention, will offer information about a highly effective way to diet. According to the government, two out of three adults are overweight and most of them will make some attempt to lose weight this year. Unfortunately, most will fail and end up blaming themselves. Yet, the reason they will fail is not because they are either weak-willed or lazy. It is because the commonly accepted diet advice pushed by the government is wrong and is largely to blame for the current obesity epidemic. Before the government started handing out bad advice, only about one out of seven American adults was overweight. Since the Federal government has succeeded in getting people to believe this wrong advice, two out of three people are now overweight. Dr. Cohen discusses how a natural diet, avoiding certain additives, and proportioning the right types of food, allows a dieter to lose weight without feeling constantly hungry. He explains how this can benefit people already suffering from hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and other diseases. He also discusses how many of these diseases can be prevented by avoiding certain additives and processed foods. He explains the connection between this modern diet and ancient weight-loss recommendations. His book may be obtained at:1-800-247-6533or athttp://www.hippocraticdiet.com/

Testosterone and Diabetes
Charlie-"I'm not saying that I have low testosterone but..."
(This is a funny one!)
Guest: Abraham Morgentaler, MD
Clinical Professor of Urology at Harvard Medical School Founder of Men’s Health Boston () Author of Testosterone for Life (2008) and The Viagra Myth (2003) Internationally recognized authority on testosterone
Low T and the Big DThere is a very high prevalence of low testosterone (T) among men with Diabetes. Since the relationship between low T and Diabetes is quite involved, Dr. Morgentaler explains, in clear terms, what’s important for you to know in order to ensure good health. In one revealing study, patients were asked to provide their entire medical histories, and then underwent a blood test for testosterone. Approximately 50% of men with Diabetes had low T, and the overall risk of low T in this population was more than double the risk seen in men without Diabetes. In another fascinating study, individuals gave blood samples, which were frozen, and these individuals were then followed for many years. At the end of the study, the researchers tested the frozen blood samples to determine whether hormone levels like testosterone predicted the development of medical conditions such as Diabetes. Men with the lowest 25% of T concentrations in the study population were at increased risk of developing Diabetes. In other words, having low T increased the probability of being diagnosed with Diabetes sometime later in life. The risk was also increased for development of metabolic syndrome, a group of items (including Diabetes) that predicts subsequent risk of heart attack and stroke. There is more to this story that suggests that normalizing T in men, with T therapy, helps control Diabetes. And, T therapy also happens to increase muscle mass and lowers body fat, and both of these changes are helpful with blood sugar control! On today's show you will learn...What is low testosterone? What is it's connection with Diabetes? What percentage of men with Diabetes have low T?Does having low T also mean you will develop Diabetes? How would a man know if he has low T?What are the symptoms? What should a man with Diabetes and low T do?How well recognized is this connection between low T and Diabetes? What are the treatments for low T?What are the risks/is it safe?Does T therapy help with blood sugar metabolism? How else does T therapy help control Diabetes?

Racing to Cure Diabetes...Phil Southerland, co-founder of Team Type 1, which was created in 2004 to inspire people living with Diabetes to take a proactive approach to managing their health and overcoming the obstacles often associated with the condition. For the better part of his lifetime, Phil Southerland has made a habit of defying the odds. When he was seven months old, he came down with what doctors first diagnosed as a routine case of baby flu. But after losing more than half of his body weight to the illness, his mother Joanna suspected something far more serious was wrong.Violently ill and with perhaps only days to live, doctors diagnosed Southerland with Juvenile Diabetes. They told his mother that the condition would likely cost him his eyesight by the time he was 20.Those doctors should see him now.Only 26 years old, Southerland already counts among his achievements the founding of Team Type 1 – the world’s first professional cycling team dedicated to raising awareness for Type 1 Diabetes – and a pair of victories for the team in the Race Across America (RAAM). His accomplishments and desire to help others with Diabetes have led to dozens of national engagements as a motivational speaker.Cycling is his first love, though. A competitor since the age of 13, he co-founded Team Type 1 in 2005 with Joe Eldridge after the two met while racing against each other in college. Their intent – to create a cycling team made up solely of athletes with Type 1 Diabetes – first raced RAAM in 2006. The result was a victory in their division and the second fastest overall crossing, completing the more than 3,000-mile race in 5 days, 16 hours and 4 minutes. Last year, Team Type 1 did it again, winning its RAAM division while completing the transcontinental race faster than anyone else: 5 days, 15 hours and 43 minutes.Southerland says living with Type 1 Diabetes allows him to be “the CEO” of his own body, while creating a long-term plan for success. “I have met some amazing people because I have diabetes,” he says. His long-term goals include getting Team Type 1 a spot in the Tour de France by 2012 and an entire Team of Type 1 pro cyclists in the Tour not long thereafter.Ever the visionary, Phil would like to “see a group health insurance plan for people with Diabetes, so we can all have the tools necessary to prevent complications.”
Phil Riley is Communications Manager for the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). He was Deputy Chair of the Promotion and Awareness Working Group that planned and executed the campaign’s media and PR strategy.Prior to joining the Federation, Phil taught Business Communication at the University of Antwerp, where he pursued an academic career with an interest in how discourse, particularly conversational discourse, is shaped by features of context.Phil Riley has lived with Type 1 Diabetes for almost 20 years.
