Taxes are an inevitability, and for many Americans, they represent a considerable financial burden. In this episode, Steve delves into a recent poll revealing that just over half of Americans believe their income taxes are unfair. As Steve points out, who really enjoys paying taxes?

However, there's more to the story. The poll doesn't account for the impending expiration of the Trump tax cuts in 2025, which could have significant implications for taxpayers. The question arises: Is it time for proactive tax planning instead of waiting until the last minute?

Steve highlights the changing landscape of tax planning. In the past, the focus was often on short-term savings, such as contributing to an IRA to reduce current-year taxes. But today, the game has shifted. Tax planning needs to extend beyond the micro view of a single year and encompass a lifetime perspective.

Steve emphasizes the importance of considering not only the immediate savings but also the long-term consequences of tax decisions. For example, deferring taxes into the future was once seen as a wise move, but the reality has changed. People's lifestyles, tax brackets, and legislative risk all play vital roles in shaping the new tax planning landscape.

In this episode, we dive into the recently announced Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for Social Security benefits next year. The good news is that benefits will increase by 3.2% based on inflation, offering some relief to recipients. However, this increase is notably lower than the 8.7% hike from this year.

We explore the potential impact of these changes on Social Security's future and whether they could put additional strain on the program's sustainability. With previous COLA raises of 5.9% and 8.7%, concerns arise about the program's longevity.

As Steve explains, the issue of taxation of Social Security benefits is a crucial aspect to consider. With higher COLA raises, some beneficiaries might find themselves moving into higher tax brackets, resulting in a more substantial tax bill from Uncle Sam.

Moreover, Steve addresses the broader issue of Social Security's sustainability and the potential need for legislative changes to save the program. He mentions the possibility of means-testing Social Security, where individuals with higher incomes might not receive full benefits.

Tune in to gain valuable insights into the potential challenges of the Social Security program and the importance of sound financial and tax planning.

Join Steve as he delves into the significance of this age when it comes to your 401(k) and shares real-life examples that dispel common retirement myths.
