In this episode Cal continues Thomas Leonard's list of 100 Coaching Mistakes You Can Avoid.

  1. Passively coaching and responding during the coaching sessions instead of asking for more (much more) from the client
  2. Focusing on tactical matters or details when strategic coaching is needed, and vice-versa
  3. Being too nice/patient to the point that you are not saying what needs to be said
  4. Slipping into the role of motivator or cattle prod of your clients, instead of being their collaborative partner
  5. Working too hard to make your clients successful instead of inspiring/challenging your client to do that for themselves
  6. Not setting specific enough goals or focusing enough on performance (unless client wants a discovery-type focus)
  7. Not directly and immediately addressing the client's personality problems, communication flaws, bad attitude or resistance
  8. Not knowing or asking the right question(s)
  9. Accepting what the client says at face value, without clarifying or asking for evidence
  10. Coaching clients as if they are all the same.

Remember the three Rs: Rate, Review and "Rubscribe"

As he states, this is not necessarily a shameless plug (althought it might partly be that), but there are distinct advantages to doing part of your mentor coaching with someone from out of your stream.

Note: Because of comment about the speed of my speech, I have tried to slow down the pace of my speaking.

Principles of Accountability

  1. Be clear as to what accountability is (2:25)
  2. Accountability often involves "the reporters questions" (4:00)
    What
    Who
    How
    When
  3. The question about accountability is not so much "if", but "to whom"? (5:06)
  4. The client needs to say up front what level of accountability they want. (8:54)
  5. Learn the clients "accountability love language" (9:55)
  6. Gauge the clients level of commitment to the action. 11:00)
  7. Accountability & follow through can be helped by asking about potential roadblocks/speed bumps (12:05)
  8. The coach can provide a service by providing an upfront reality check (12:53)
  9. Accountability needs ot be handled in a coaching manner. (14:28)
  10. Beware of reverse delegation (16:21)
